Old school bakeries are the bestest. Pull a number and wait your turn for golden delight. Perfect exterior crunch, pillowy center - each bite a swirl of sugar, cinnamon, and melty yummy. I present to you... The absolute gold standard of donut. Not a donut. More cinnamon and sugar. About a half dozen seems the appropriate amount. A great deal more is known than has been proved. When I was 4 or 5, I swore that bird seeds grew birds, thus the name. When my parents asked me to prove it to them, I planted a pile of bird seeds. The next day there were loads of birds where I planted the seeds, showing I was right. I got a big splinter in my foot when I was 4 and I kept pulling away when my dad tried to pull it out with tweezers, because it hurt. My older sister leaned over and whispered to me me that if I didn't let my dad pull it out, the splinter would sink into my skin and go straight to my heart, pierce it, and then I would die. I immediately believed her and let my dad pull the splinter out - and that was how I thought splinters worked for ages.Spill it, people. You weren't always smarties.

__________________________ Ok, I got a good one, and a follow up. Apparently, there was a rash of nose picking at about age 6 or 7 in Second grade. My teacher decided that each year he would tell the class that those that picked their nose and put the little treasure in their mouth (apparently that was an issue every year)...they would run the risk of appendicitis. Now, this sounded serious. Second graders didn't even know what appendicitis was. Also, total horse manure. But, what do 6 year old's know? I believed that nonsense until sometime in high school, and never tempted fate as a result. Mission accomplished by that teacher. I ran into him about 3 years ago. I brought it up and he laughed so hard he had tears in his eyes. Great guy. My little brother used to flat put disappear during Sunday School. Took me months of gingerly avoiding the Bkue Hairs, the Elders, and the 'rents to catch his ass. Little shit would attend start up services, excuse himself to the bathroom, then slip outside and go hide under the church and play with the dog pack that followed the families to church. I was ever so peeved that his narrow assed 3 year old self not only thought of it, but figured a way to do it, and get away with it that i sat there. All sweaty, covered in dog hair and slobber, in absolute respect at a 13 year old, that a 3 year old had such mastery over the ability to fuck off. Little dude is in his 50s now, terrorising mid career engineers with the same aplumb he had as a 3 year old. Treating it all like it's natural to be this dang good at being lazy and making slackers do yer work. Has to be genius level redneck. Don Pettit, years ago, had a hell of a return ride on a Soyuz -- something went wrong and they had to do a ballistic re-entry. He pulled 8 g's. And, making it worse, he was holding "luggage" in his lap. He had shot a bunch of his "Saturday Morning Science" experiments. At the time, they didn't have any way to transmit stuff at high bandwidth, so he had to bring physical copies back somehow. There's video of them fishing him out of the capsule after that ride. Talk about looking "rode hard and put up wet". I thought the man tossing the fastball was a softball pitcher. Stupid not to read the whole post.
Back in the fast-pitch men's days, there were lots of guys who could throw faster than 90mph. You had to decide to swing when the ball was still in the pitcher's hand behind him. Lots of games wound up 3 -1, 4-2, etc. It hurt when hittin' the ribs, believe me. Posted by: LRob in OK, Moron and Lunatic at March 25, 2025 11:10 PM (ha1wR) 214

Just read up on Don's ballistic reentry. He got stuck on the ISS after the Columbia disaster which grounded the Shuttle fleet (this "stranding" of astronauts has happened before a couple of times). He had to hitch a ride back on a Soyuz, and this was the first manned version of the Rooske's new Soyuz TMA variant. The guidance system failed on reentry, causing ballistic mode. Don had a 20 kg pack strapped to his chest, containing all that stuff he wanted to bring back. It was supposed to be no more than 3g. They hit 8. That was like having a 350 lb weight on his chest during reentry. He dislocated a shoulder. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at March 25, 2025 11:12 PM (w6EFb) 220

The sweet spot to put them in play is probably similar size, but it's easier to make contact and foul off the softball. Posted by: mikeski --------- My experience - it was easier to hit the softball. I faced 98 in baseball and 65 in softball, which translates - from a reaction time perspective to about 95 in baseball. Much easier to make contact with the big, optic yellow ball. I enjoyed playing and coaching both games. Softball - very little margin for error. Everything needs to be fielded cleanly - no bobbles. Moves quickly. Fastpitch softball is typically moving flat - maybe a 1 degree drop. Baseball comes from a bunch of arm slots and angles. Short fences is another factor - fly balls go out of the park in fastpitch. I keep the local network and my machines on it synced to UTC within 50ms (mostly). It's pretty easy to do now. I wish they'd make some of the old electric clocks, rather than the battery powered stuff a lot of which is cheap. The old electric clocks were run by PM synchronous little motors. They kept time as well as line frequency. The appliance clocks here, stove, microwave, and even the coffee makes are electronic, but they appear to count AC zero crossings and stay well synced. As long as Mr. Duke keeps her frequency well regulated, they keep good time. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at March 26, 2025 01:24 AM (w6EFb) 360

I like a good hanging with a proper noose. The standard drop involves a drop of between 4 and 6 feet (1.2–1.8 m) and came into use from 1866, when the scientific details were published by Irish doctor Samuel Haughton. Its use rapidly spread to English-speaking countries and those with judicial systems of English origin. It was considered a humane improvement on the short drop because it was intended to be enough to break the person's neck, causing immediate unconsciousness and rapid brain death.[7][8] Posted by: Nightwatch at March 26, 2025 01:28 AM (25kuG) 365

I've never heard that (not that it's false). I do have Ray Manzarek's post-Doors stuff (most of which I like) and some Krieger/Densmore which is ok. The post-Morrison Doors is, well, the band died with Morrison. Posted by: SFGoth at March 26, 2025 01:41 AM (KAi1n) 371

I've always been partial to the Casio watches. I've got some "G-shocks" that keep time pretty well. I just checked, and it's been probably over 6 months since I set two of them, and they're about 30 seconds fast. I had one that could do better than that. Depends on the model, and even particular versions within a model. I've got an "atomic" version that I wear most of the time now. It's not as accurate as the non-atomics running on its own, depending on the NIST signal from Ft. Collins. It's error is probably 2-3 the non-atomic ones. I could not understand why TSA employees seem so newly nice, happy, and sharp looking. Finally I just asked. Their union was summarily abolished about three weeks ago. I'm not sure if there was any actual discussions between any of the people involved but I remember reading it discussed in contemporary music articles that I read later. Not really all that far fetched as both groups were quite commercially successful. Now we tend to view the Guess Who as "pop" and the Doors as "out there" but no matter how twisted Morrison wanted to be they weren't some outsider band that didn't sell, and the Guess Who had a lot of "art" in them. Cummings waa definitely the better singer but to me the two had similar enough styles that I think it would have worked.

TSA...grrr...
I had to go thru PDX in 2002, after attending Tucson Gem & Mineral Show (and purchasing a *whole bunch of* silver beads, on strands, which were in my carry-on). Oh, yes, the alarms lit up when they x-ray'd it! Had to stand on the footprints, heavily guarded, while they scanned me and tore everything out of my bag. Fkers didn't even put stuff back. Oh, well... nothing dangerous... "Here. Put your stuff away." Not even an apology. Jerks. Posted by: JQ at March 26, 2025 01:54 AM (rdVOm) 381
Had a G-Shock five alarm Hunter. It was a good watch. Can't make it with the resin band. My sweat reacts with it and you can smell it across the room after 5 hours.

The Guess Who was my first concert. A Saturday Youth Bowling League girl who had an older brother in the league. We had to be dropped off at Scope (Norfolk) by my Mom as I wasn't old enough to drive yet. Dating as a 15-year-old.
What surprised me the most, knowing their catalogue quite well and how beautiful and moving some of the songs were, was how vulgar the lead guy, I guess Burton Cummings, was. He played a flute and at one point made a joke about only wanting a musician's flute while twirling his flute and ending up with it pointing out from his crotch. Being on my first date as a young man, I was horrified. Posted by: RickZ at March 26, 2025 02:01 AM (gKDq2) 385

Not even an apology. Jerks. Posted by: JQ =========== I don't even hide my disgust with those people. Them: "How are you, ma'am?" Me: "Fine, except for this." One Christmas, this adorable older couple all dressed up like Santa and Mrs. Claus in casual clothes were going through. He's using a cane and they tell him he's got to take off his belt. He says if his belt comes off, his pants fall down. (It was true, he had a Santa-sized belly and that belt was the only thing keeping his pants up.) They say, well, can you *hold* them up with your hand? He says it's difficult for him to hold up his pants with one hand and manage his cane with the other. They say "Well, TRY." Absolute fvkers.
