Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Government Spending? No! Government Borrowing... or Government StealingGovernment Spending. Except that is a misnomer. We should be calling it Government Borrowing, because that is exactly what it is. On the other hand... maybe it should be called "government stealing," because they are stealing our grandchildren's livelihood! It is impossible to become wealthier by borrowing every year for generations, and yet the central bank and our brilliant bar-tending, foul-mouthed elites in Congress seem to be convinced of the positive effects of government borrowing, or more accurately, government creation of inflated dollars. I don't think that even John Maynard Keynes imagined never-ending deficit spending, yet here we are! American families that become wealthy spend less than they earn, and save what they don't spend. Yet the prevailing argument is that government is immune from those basic tenets because it can create demand with monetary policy, and that will grow the economy. Obviously government can't run out of money, but that pesky little thing called inflation is the unavoidable and economy-destroying result of running the printing presses or, nowadays, simply creating more digital funds. Secretary Bessent on 'Reprivatization' of Economy: 'We Are Laser-Focused on Getting this Deficit Under Control'Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Breitbart News exclusively that President Donald Trump’s administration is “laser-focused” on cutting the deficit and getting spending “under control,” part of his larger vision of “reprivatization” of the U.S. economy so economic growth is no longer dependent on government spending but instead on private sector growth. Bessent said he joined Trump on the campaign trail last year and later joined his cabinet because he was “so alarmed” by the “high level of government spending” that had taken hold in recent years. This is why President Trump and his team are disruptors. They are not content simply to slow the rate of increase of government spending/borrowing. They understand two things. First: the size of the government budget requires borrowing...forever! That is ultimately untenable, and will destroy our economy. The budget must be cut. There is no other option. Second: Government spending is inherently less efficient at growing economies. In fact, based on our experience over the last two generations, it is obvious that government spending retards organic economic growth, by crowding out investment and inserting a chaotically inefficient system that rewards rent seeking and outright fraud. Government must shrink, and be removed from competition for investment dollars. Getting control of the budget will yield immediate results, as the financial markets recognize that more private investment funds will be available. Will there be short-term shocks? Of course. Those financial markets are dependent on a constant stream of government dollars created to fund the deficit and pay bond interest. And there will be uncertainty as the Trump administration formalizes its tariff plans. But when future government spending and borrowing is better understood, and the tariffs are set, business will be able to plan for the future with much more certainty. But the biggest change will be that government will not be competing as much for investment dollars, and will not be crowding out innovation and entrepreneurialism. Simply unleashing Americans from the tethers of a huge and all-encompassing government will go a long way toward correcting the imbalance of government vs. the private sector. Posted by: MkY at March 16, 2025 12:06 PM Exactly. And it was a domino effect of bad. EPA regulations created defacto mandates for EVs. This forced auto companies to change their lineup to EVs to meet the mandates or face massive fines or outright bans on the sale of vehicles. The EV lineup led to massive drop in sales of vehicles, as customers do not want EVs. This led to massive drop in revenue for the auto makers. This led to outsourcing manufacturing, layoffs of American UAW labor as well as American engineers and outsourcing of American engineering development to remote low-skilled, poorly educated, low-experienced BCCs (Best Cost Countries Mexico, India, Brazil). This led to massive drop in quality, massive drop in development efficiency and massive high cost to companies, despite the labor and employee cost savings. Going to take years for the industry to recover. Posted by: Clyde Shelton at March 16, 2025 12:16 PM (P5BPp) 16

Posted by: MkY at March 16, 2025 12:20 PM I don't know all the regulation details offhand, but I think the US automakers going away from cars and mainly focusing on SUVs and trucks was due to the how the regulations treated a company's vehicle mix fleet. I think there are different regulations for cars vs trucks/SUVs. And there are regulations for an automaker's full vehicle content. So there's a regulation target for emissions/fuel economy for cars, another for trucks/SUVs and another for total vehicles the company sells. An automaker might be able to meet the regulations for the car fleet and truck/SUV fleet separately, but with the mix together, they would never meet the overall requirement of everything together. So companies ditched the car market and just focused on trucks/SUVs, since the regulations were lower. And any difference they had from the regulations, they bought "carbon credits" from Tesla. I've said this before; rehabilitating the judiciary can't be done with said judiciary. It's corrupt. Like the election systems. Like our political betters. Neither of those can be rectified with voting, which is broken too. You have to work outside those frameworks to affect change. Trump's doing this (sort of) with DOGE. I still think hybrids could be a thing and I would like to see innovation that way. I still would like to see if anyone has done a train like power system for a car.
The Chevy Bolt was a pure series hybrid and there have probably been others. Terminology explainer: in series hybrids the gas or diesel engine spins a generator which then powers the motors and moves the car. Exactly like a diesel-electric locomotive. A parallel hybrid, which all of Toyota's are, the gas engine spins the generator *and* drives the wheels (and then the electric motor also drives the wheels). It's mechanically more complicated, but people like the idea that if the high-voltage electrical system fails the car will still run and drive. Posted by: Ian S. at March 16, 2025 12:40 PM (QZThv) 84

I agree with Milton Friedman - what is important is the level of government spending, not how the spending is financed (borrowing or taxes).
The problem with focusing on the deficit is that the D's can simply say: Great! We need a huge tax increase to reduce the deficit!" The real problem is that Covid was used as an excuse to increase Federal spending 50% - the challenge is to get Federal spending back to 2019 levels. Other than that, I don't see the point. Maybe it works in some other way that I can't tell, as the operator of said vehicle. And another thing, inflationary spending IS a tax, just an indirect one.
Consider a sales tax - the government wants say $1B for hand outs to a client so it levies taxes on cigarettes or whatever to take that $1B from people that spend money on cigarettes - pretty clear right? But with inflation the government again imagine the government wants $1B to hand out to clients, but they don't want a messy tax fight. So they don't bother levying a tax and instead just give out that extra $1B. Where does the money come from? ALL consumers have to pay that $1B through inflation. One thing I noticed learning tune-ups, a V8 in a smaller car is capable of 25 mpg on the highway at cruise.
When the EPA forced clean air mandates in the early 1970s, automakers DE-tuned everything, in order to reduce NOX — the pollutant that in the presence of sunlight causes smog. Retarded ignition timing, valve timing, reduced compression. It worked. BUT, fuel mileage was cut IN HALF, and they had to come up with a way to burn off the excess fuel coming out of the tailpipe. Enter the Catalytic Converter. From an engineering standpoint, this destroyed Detroit. Unions and Management did the rest. Ugly vehicles with poor fit and finish. ARC, I disagree partially with Friedman. The government spending is toxic in how it distorts both finances and the economy in general, but the financing is how it is accomplished.
One of the main drivers of inflation itself is creation of unbacked money, and in a fiat system like we have today, money creation is accomplished by creating debt, either by Treasuries, or by the FED providing loans, which are also completely unbacked until they are paid off. They are not completely wrong, the main question is how incomplete the two views are The Chicago school focused on money as a way to modify the economy, where the Austrian school considered money and credit creation to be the cause of the boom-bust cycle Posted by: Kindltot at March 16, 2025 12:57 PM (D7oie) 138

Speaking of YT videos, I need to hone in on the VDH videos where the content is primarily him speaking. The sponsored ones by some other entity too often have some long-winded bore "breaking things down for us" at the expense of just being able to listen to the man. VDH is plain-spoken enough. That's a long fricking bridge. This is not the Louisiana Causeways. Posted by: Aetius451AD at March 16, 2025 12:54 PM It can be done. Mackinac Bridge (Michigan) is 5 miles long. Golden Gate Bridge (SanFran) is almost 2 miles. But as noted above, seismic activity, water currents, climate conditions in the area (wind, storms, etc.), stability of the foundation, depth of the water, etc. all play factors in determining the feasibility (and cost) of the engineering. The government spending is toxic in how it distorts both finances and the economy in general, but the financing is how it is accomplished.
To elaborate on this, private sector spending rewards people and companies that provide services and products the citizens want. Public sector spending rewards people for currying favor with politicians. So in the former example you get a stronger economy and better goods and services. In the latter you get...crony socialism where no one cares about proving better goods and services. And you can see this play out as the goods and service available over the last 4 years have not only gone up in price (Bidenflation) but have severely decreased in quality. If people want a bridge between Sicily and Italy, then they should talk with the Chinese and build several islands in the path they want to take. Once they're in place, you can build shorter bridges, or even two separate paths.
Of course, you have to trust that the Chinese built islands will last more than 5 years - or even until the bridges are built. Posted by: Hour of the Wolf at March 16, 2025 01:02 PM (VNX3d) 157

Getting control of the budget will yield immediate results, as the financial markets recognize that more private investment funds will be available.
Actually, that is the exact opposite of what will happen. I submit that the trillions of dollars stolen from future generations and the trillions stolen from retirement accounts, what hasn't been pissed away on the Status Symbols of the nouveau riche (Made Party Members who are on the take) finds its way into the private equity markets which is why P/E ratios are insane. The Party Members plow that money into the markets, diluting the honest contributions from working people. This is why the markets have obscenely high prices and the indexes are unrealistic. Conversely, working Americans have to take on two or more jobs to pay for this reduction of purchasing power that is translated into stocks and bonds for the Party Elite. With USAID and other DOGE discovered money laundering operations, the Party Members have less to put in the markets. There will be a necessary correction as stolen money from future generations isn't being invested today for Party Members and their Trustafarian children. In 1900 no one believed that man could achieve powered flight. Hot air balloons? Sure! The had been around for a century at least. But powered flight? No. Just eight short years later, the Wright brothers did the impossible. And within ten years after that, airplanes had become weapons of war.
In 1900 people saw automobiles as a goofy looking novelty. No one really believed that those contraptions would be ubiquitous. And yet... Just fifteen years later, those vehicles were being used in a war. In 1900, people did not believe that half the world could be dragged in to a war started in a small country that a lot of people didn't know existed. But two decades later, they knew not only that it did happen but that it could happen again. The world changed drastically between 1900 and 1920. Even bigger changes would happen in the following 25 years. The modern world, as we know it, started in the first two decades of the 20th century. Everything since then has basically been innovation, improvement, and advancement of what happened in that time period. Except government. Our government got stuck on stupid and corruptio in those years and hasn't changed one damned bit Posted by: Madame Mayhem (uppity wench) at March 16, 2025 01:38 PM (4XwPj) 218
