The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

To the vast disappointment of the Forever-War^TM supporters, President Trump's efforts to end the pointless border war in Ukraine may be entering a new phase. Both the Z-man and Putin have agreed to end energy infrastructure attacks which, while it might seem incomplete and narrowly focused, is a boon for the people who are suffering. Z-man and Putin certainly aren't!

An incremental ceasefire leading to a total cessation of fighting might not be the quickest way to get to an end to this bloodbath, but President Trump is in his element as a negotiator, so it isn't surprising.

Putin is in a position of strength as he consolidates his military gains in Ukraine. Obviously it has gone very badly for Russia compared to their rosy and optimistic plans for a three day campaign, at which any student of Russian military history will smile and nod and say...Yup! pretty typical!

But Russia is much bigger than Ukraine, has shorter supply lines, and will, in the end, succeed in taking the territory it desires. Perhaps they have already accomplished their goals, and the current fighting is simply to wear down Ukraine to the point at which it must agree to whatever ceasefire is proposed, no matter how much worse than the one it was offered three years ago!

Zelenskyy Also Agrees to Limited Russia-Ukraine Cease-Fire in Call With Trump

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has agreed to a moratorium on attacks on Russia’s energy infrastructure following a March 19 phone call with President Donald Trump.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio and national security adviser Mike Waltz issued a statement on the Trump–Zelenskyy call, saying that the two leaders “agreed on a partial ceasefire against energy.”
Zelenskyy confirmed the development in a post on social media platform X, saying, “I supported this step, and Ukraine confirmed that we are ready to implement it.”
Trump’s and Zelenskyy’s phone conversation lasted about an hour and came a day after Trump proposed the moratorium on energy infrastructure attacks to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

How long will it take to achieve some sort of peace? My guess is that the fighting will gradually wind down without much in the way of formal agreements, in spite of the paper tigers of Europe pledging fealty to a free Ukraine and its pint-sized dictator. The grand alliance of the free nations of the West was never more than a fragile coalition willing to talk a tough stance...right up until it required actual sacrifice.

It is already fracturing!

Italy's Meloni Backs Trump's Peace Efforts in Ukraine, Urges 'Pragmatism' in Europe on Trade Talks

Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni on Tuesday called for “pragmatism” to prevent an EU-US dispute over tariffs from escalating into a full-scale trade war, and expressed support for U.S. President Donald Trump’s efforts for a ceasefire in Ukraine.
Speaking to the Italian Senate ahead of a meeting of EU leaders this week, Meloni made her first wide-ranging comments touching on Trump policies that have shaken Europe in the two months since he took office.
Meloni struck a diplomatic tone on tariffs and expressed favor for Trump’s moves to establish a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine as a possible pathway to end the war in Ukraine. She also ruled out sending Italian troops to Ukraine, and spoke against the proposal for a security force by Britain and France. And she pledged to forge ahead with a controversial and stalled plan to vet migrants outside of the EU borders in Albania.

Oh no! The head of government of an important European country has come out in support of Literally Hitler's plan for peace! And even worse, she doesn't want to send Italian troops to get chewed up for some nebulous and suspect goal. Does anyone really believe that short of a world war, Russia is going to be pushed out of Ukraine?

No, of course not. But Raytheon and Northrop Grumman and Pratt & Whitney, and Lockheed Martin sure are cheering for that! It is a testament to Donald Trump's independence from the military-industrial complex that he is not willing to commit American treasure and blood to a border dispute 4,000 miles away.

This is a war whose antecedents are not simply that Putin is a bad man. Regardless of how you feel about him and Russia, NATO has been pushing closer and closer to Russia's traditional borders, and only a jingoistic Russia-hating, war-loving retard would fail to understand that it was probably not a good idea.

Well, as NATO crumbles, perhaps it is incumbent upon the UK and France and Germany to step in, send troops and cash, and do what they are clamoring for! Yeah, that's not going to happen for a few reasons, the most important of which is that their militaries are a sadly diminished and ineffectual shell of what they once were. They will bluster and pontificate, but ultimately they will agree to Donald Trump's plan for a ceasefire, because they simply don't have a choice.

I guess I sound like a Putin supporter, but I'm really not. I just don't think that it is worth the blood and treasure of the West to intervene in a border dispute between two countries whose borders have been bouncing around for a very long time.

If both countries could lose, I would be happy!

I don't care about their ability to fight wars. Their inability to fight wars has been a good thing, to be honest.

But, that's been outweighed by their ability to buy votes through social services at the expense of military budgets, which helped create a permanent ruling class more entrenched than actual royalty.

If we end up with a 22nd century where France and Germany are constantly at war, then fine. As long as we're not involved and France and Germany aren't using their welfare states to try and drive policy in America.

How much of the money actually went to Ukraine? I'm sure some of it did, but I suspect most of it was recycled back in to the DC swamp.

As far as the money that actually made it to Ukraine -- yeah, that money is gone.

They've been beating the Persian war drums on and off my entire adult life, so I lean towards Iran. But I wouldn't put money on it. In 2010, I never would have thought the next war would be in Ukraine. You just never know where the Deep State decides to target until they do.

But in either case, I couldn't agree more with CBD - we should have stayed out of it.

What does it mean for Europe to rearm? Does every EU member need a couple of hundred thousand troops, a modern airforce and nuclear weapons? It's so breathtakingly stupid.

On the one hand, that's horrific to scare kids like that. On the other hand, yeah, getting away from windows in the event of any bombing with massive pressure changes makes sense. Flying glass can kill a lot of people, even if they were far enough from the blast that they would have otherwise lived.

On the other other hand, it is kind of funny in retrospect. "When the evil Russkies bomb us and try to kill everyone in the entire world, duck under your desk and cover your heads."

As far as public perception/messaging was in error, it was generally in overestimating the productive capacity of the USSR and their ability to compete in some arms races(and why they collapsed so easily when their resources were strained).

It seems obvious to us now, but many believed communism was fairly economically efficient.

161 Agreed. And I try to give people grace about it. I can semi-relate, I came to age in the War on Terror (tm) years. And I fully bought in.

I grew up during the Cold War. I served in the Navy, in the Pacific, during that time and spent a goodly bit of time off the coast of the Soviet Union. Then I watched the Soviet Union end. I watched Russia try to join the EU, and NATO, on multiple occasions, only to be rebuffed. I worked with a bunch of people from Russia. I watched NATO expand eastward time and again... despite promising to not do so.

I admit that I still bought into the GWOT but then I watched as our "leaders" purposefully refused to win the war as more and more young Americans were killed or maimed.

I am so fucking bitter about the whole thing. The struggle vs. the USSR was valid. January 1992 it stopped being valid.

If Putin had thrown his full might into Ukraine he would have been required to declared war on a NATO dependency, and he would have also been forced to cede a portion of his power over the situation, and that was politically dangerous to him
It might be an issue with the Russian ability to mobilize, but it appears there were other issues influencing Putin's decisions beyond that.
However, Ukraine threw its full might into the war, so there is that, as well.

Any reputation he has at being at all decent in the job is because McConnell arranged everything for him. In the group project, McConnell did all the work and Schumer just put his name on it.

Okay, but there's a difference between people believing in an ideology (communism) and the USSR being an actual military threat to the US.

We now know (and I suspect the CIA knew at the time), that the USSR never had the intention or capability of going to war directly with the US. And it makes perfect sense. The USSR had a TINY economy and population compared to the West. And much less innovation, and much worse technology (central planning and all).

Like a black bear, they were much more scared of us then we were of them.

Do we really need to regularly have active shooter drills for elementary school kids? Isn't the risk to their mental health a bit more of a concern than the chances of them actually being in a school shooter situation and having to hide in a classroom?

You can prepare the teachers for what to do if you want, but when a 9 year old goes through several of these drills a year, it can really fuck with them mentally.

The USSR's leadership generally overestimated their position and underestimated the US's position. The US made the reverse error.

The USSR leadership was ensconced in a bubble(not too different from our current elites), thinking the US was faking things as much as they did with their potemkin villages.

The CIA was generally awful at penetrating the USSR and so our intel was bad.

Western economists were pretty influential towards the end of the Cold War in persuading Reagan that the actual situation was one where Russia was paying a heavy cost to sustain a global empire.

Regardless of communism and capitalism, that was pretty inevitable as the US and Russia were the two empires left standing and carving up the globe after WW2. That pretty much sets up the countries to be rivals independent of ideological differences.

And again, there was not an awareness that the US was so economically ahead. If both sides were better aware of their relative situations, some conflicts probably would've been avoided.

All Keynes did was enshrine what Britain and the Bank of England was doing in playing around with the exchange rate of Gold, the US Dollar and the creation of fiat currencies to maintain the value of an economy as an economic theory. All the base concepts have been retconned into the theory and moved a lot to make them fit. Modern economic theory is about how to kite checks and not get caught. The base concept HAS to be that a centrally planned economy has to be superior, since that was what the master economists were trying to accomplish, and were doing since England realized it had more paper money than they could redeem at the declared rate in 1919, and were afraid of pissing off their power base who were holding paper, since they had dutifully turned in their gold.

Keynes worked with developing the work arounds post WWI to not revalue the Pound, and then in the 30's wrote his economics theory, not the other way around.
