Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition![]() Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has agreed to a moratorium on attacks on Russia’s energy infrastructure following a March 19 phone call with President Donald Trump. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and national security adviser Mike Waltz issued a statement on the Trump–Zelenskyy call, saying that the two leaders “agreed on a partial ceasefire against energy.” Zelenskyy confirmed the development in a post on social media platform X, saying, “I supported this step, and Ukraine confirmed that we are ready to implement it.” Trump’s and Zelenskyy’s phone conversation lasted about an hour and came a day after Trump proposed the moratorium on energy infrastructure attacks to Russian President Vladimir Putin. How long will it take to achieve some sort of peace? My guess is that the fighting will gradually wind down without much in the way of formal agreements, in spite of the paper tigers of Europe pledging fealty to a free Ukraine and its pint-sized dictator. The grand alliance of the free nations of the West was never more than a fragile coalition willing to talk a tough stance...right up until it required actual sacrifice. It is already fracturing! Italy's Meloni Backs Trump's Peace Efforts in Ukraine, Urges 'Pragmatism' in Europe on Trade Talks Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni on Tuesday called for “pragmatism” to prevent an EU-US dispute over tariffs from escalating into a full-scale trade war, and expressed support for U.S. President Donald Trump’s efforts for a ceasefire in Ukraine. Speaking to the Italian Senate ahead of a meeting of EU leaders this week, Meloni made her first wide-ranging comments touching on Trump policies that have shaken Europe in the two months since he took office. Meloni struck a diplomatic tone on tariffs and expressed favor for Trump’s moves to establish a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine as a possible pathway to end the war in Ukraine. She also ruled out sending Italian troops to Ukraine, and spoke against the proposal for a security force by Britain and France. And she pledged to forge ahead with a controversial and stalled plan to vet migrants outside of the EU borders in Albania. Oh no! The head of government of an important European country has come out in support of Literally Hitler's plan for peace! And even worse, she doesn't want to send Italian troops to get chewed up for some nebulous and suspect goal. Does anyone really believe that short of a world war, Russia is going to be pushed out of Ukraine? No, of course not. But Raytheon and Northrop Grumman and Pratt & Whitney, and Lockheed Martin sure are cheering for that! It is a testament to Donald Trump's independence from the military-industrial complex that he is not willing to commit American treasure and blood to a border dispute 4,000 miles away. This is a war whose antecedents are not simply that Putin is a bad man. Regardless of how you feel about him and Russia, NATO has been pushing closer and closer to Russia's traditional borders, and only a jingoistic Russia-hating, war-loving retard would fail to understand that it was probably not a good idea. Well, as NATO crumbles, perhaps it is incumbent upon the UK and France and Germany to step in, send troops and cash, and do what they are clamoring for! Yeah, that's not going to happen for a few reasons, the most important of which is that their militaries are a sadly diminished and ineffectual shell of what they once were. They will bluster and pontificate, but ultimately they will agree to Donald Trump's plan for a ceasefire, because they simply don't have a choice. I guess I sound like a Putin supporter, but I'm really not. I just don't think that it is worth the blood and treasure of the West to intervene in a border dispute between two countries whose borders have been bouncing around for a very long time. If both countries could lose, I would be happy! [Crossposted at CutJibNewsletter and X] Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Posted by: Archimedes at March 20, 2025 11:03 AM (xCA6C) ======== I don't care about their ability to fight wars. Their inability to fight wars has been a good thing, to be honest. But, that's been outweighed by their ability to buy votes through social services at the expense of military budgets, which helped create a permanent ruling class more entrenched than actual royalty. If we end up with a 22nd century where France and Germany are constantly at war, then fine. As long as we're not involved and France and Germany aren't using their welfare states to try and drive policy in America. Putin has a rationale for why a large part of Ukraine should be Russian - he laid out in an interview with Tucker, but apparently it has been a Putin tale for many years. So maybe the Russian invasion was an attempt by Putin to accomplish that has been his ambition for many years. Or maybe he was provoked by the NATO membership issue. Or both. But in either case, I couldn't agree more with CBD - we should have stayed out of it.

Its a big ask for people who lived two or more decades of their adult lives in the Cold War to change. Many of these people define themselves by their allegiances during that time. Many here are surprisingly open minded about the subject. They are not typical of the general population.

Agreed. And I try to give people grace about it. I can semi-relate, I came to age in the War on Terror (tm) years. And I fully bought in.
I grew up during the Cold War. I served in the Navy, in the Pacific, during that time and spent a goodly bit of time off the coast of the Soviet Union. Then I watched the Soviet Union end. I watched Russia try to join the EU, and NATO, on multiple occasions, only to be rebuffed. I worked with a bunch of people from Russia. I watched NATO expand eastward time and again... despite promising to not do so. I admit that I still bought into the GWOT but then I watched as our "leaders" purposefully refused to win the war as more and more young Americans were killed or maimed. I am so fucking bitter about the whole thing. The struggle vs. the USSR was valid. January 1992 it stopped being valid. Not to mention that I'm betting there are fewer than 5% of women are actually majoring in useful, productive hard sciences. Serious point: The Biden administration's pardons may have been signed by autopen without Biden's awareness. Counter: J6 pardons were ALL signed by autopen, so they're equally invalid! Answer: Some pardons were campaigned on. The promise coming right out of the mouth of the now president. Also, Trump had numerous reminders by his own side until those pardons were done. Somebody said "I don't remember the autopen clause in the Constitution". Well, I don't remember the part of the Constitution where anybody in the President's name can pardon as long as we have a sitting president and he doesn't stop them. All the base concepts have been retconned into the theory and moved a lot to make them fit. Modern economic theory is about how to kite checks and not get caught. The base concept HAS to be that a centrally planned economy has to be superior, since that was what the master economists were trying to accomplish, and were doing since England realized it had more paper money than they could redeem at the declared rate in 1919, and were afraid of pissing off their power base who were holding paper, since they had dutifully turned in their gold. Where in Economics is that argued? I have the 17th ed.
Posted by: WitchDoktor at March 20, 2025 12:19 PM (Z+A8w) am I wrong, does it not say that the centrally planned economy was expected to eclipse the market economy? Keynes worked with developing the work arounds post WWI to not revalue the Pound, and then in the 30's wrote his economics theory, not the other way around. Hitler then: We will build an alliance of European powers to defeat the Russian threat...permanently. We will win our biggest battle in Kursk!
Hitler now, apparently: We should keep the European alliance from attacking Russia which isn't really a threat to them. If they invade through Kursk they will pay a harsh price. Posted by: 18-1 at March 20, 2025 12:23 PM (t0Rmr) 286

They don't want to play nice, maybe cutting off a great deal of money allegedly going to unfounded environmental 'issues' and newly minted recipients and their pals might go far to cooling off Russia and Ukraine, or some of the other Eastern European Hatfield and McCoys.

"I guess I sound like a Putin supporter, but I'm really not." If you keep calling the Russian invasion of Ukraine a "pointless border war", you're really a Putin supporter. Posted by: Speller at March 20, 2025 12:28 PM (pSotA) 289
Bondi did something showy and it blew up in her face.
The only thing to recover her reputation in many minds is something showy that doesn't blow up in her face. Deputy FBI Director announcing federal investigations into Tesla arson isn't enough, it seems. Posted by: TheJamesMadison, back to the finish with Corman at March 20, 2025 12:53 PM (GBKbO) 290
"It is a testament to Donald Trump's independence from the military-industrial complex that he is not willing to commit American treasure and blood to a border dispute 4,000 miles away." Amen.

How are France and Germany planning to convince the Muslim youth of military age in their respective domains to suit up and fight for Ukraine? Unless this is a sneaky way to get them to voluntarily repatriate...

" NATO has been pushing closer and closer" No, countries rightly afraid of an aggressive, expansionist Russia are freely joining an alliance with will defend them. Fixed that for ya. Posted by: comradearthur at March 20, 2025 02:51 PM (ttOM0) Processing 0.05, elapsed 0.0555 seconds. |
