Feel Good Story - Have it Your Way

Burger King Workers Show up at Beloved Regular's Funeral with Chair Engraved in His Honor

doof-Jerry-Parkin.jpg

While some might consider Burger King royalty only among big corporate fast food chains, the staff members at a local Minnesota branch just put some very human, very sensitive toppings on the reputation of their restaurant.

When a 91-year-old regular at the restaurant's North Branch location died, the staff requested his name be engraved into the chair on which he always sat - a request that was granted swiftly by the higher-ups.

For years, Jerry Parkin met his friends often for their morning coffee at Burger King, so often in fact that they began to see him as family.

So when that family member died, it was only natural they attended the funeral.

"Someone came into the kitchen at church and said, 'The whole crew of Burger King is here, and they brought a chair,'" Jenny Olson, Parkin's daughter, told KARE. "I said, 'What?'"

Arriving in their uniforms, the staff had brought the chair that Parkin always sat in. Into the back of it, one of Parkin's coffee compatriots had asked his wife to use a wood burner to engrave his name, the date of his birth and that of his death.

***

"He would walk in, and we would have his order ready for him," said Monica Kuball, one of the Burger King employees who attended the funeral, while another, Ashley Fundingsland, noted that he sat in the same chair every morning: "That was his seat. He always sat there every morning, so we had to bring his chair."

They said they all loved him, and he loved them; and Burger King. He celebrated his 90th Birthday there, while his last meal would end up being chicken nuggets, a milkshake, and a cookie...

Having someone like Melania Trump in the White House is a breath of fresh air. She was a model, so clothes on her hang the way they should and even in leggings and boots, she looks glamorous.

piper-Picture1.jpg

A picture of Melania from Easter 2017 was recirculated recently and you can see why- it's an absolutely iconic spring look:

piper-Picture2.jpg

Melania is wearing a structured A line dress by Simone Rocha - she added a gold metallic belt and orange / coral Louboutin's. I believe they are Pigalles 120, but maybe Kates. In either case, they are 120s, which is quite the heel! Louboutin's are beautiful shoes, but they are not made for comfort. They are made to make your foot look good, and that they absolutely do.

I didn't watch the Oscars, but it's fun to take a look at what was worn. There was a lot of ugly on display, but a few dresses were gorgeous.

Mikey Madison wearing a Dior Haute Couture dress and Tiffany & Co. jewelry.

piper-Picture3.jpg

I am a vintage girl and this is stunning- Keke Palmer is in vintage Chanel, the shoes are Armani.

piper-Picture4.jpg

And finally, Selena Gomez looking very old Hollywood glamour in Celine.

piper-Picture5.jpg

Many thanks to Piper for answering the call to provide dress pr0n for the 'Ettes. The late great Oregon Muse would be proud!

What say you, Hordelings - should this be a recurring segment?

DJ Doof & - This Date in History Version
(from thisdayinmusic.com)

2007 - Brad Delp lead singer of US rock band Boston committed suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning in at his home in the New Hampshire town of Atkinson. He died from the smoke of two charcoal grills he'd lit inside his sealed master bathroom. He was found by police lying on a pillow on his bathroom floor with a note paper-clipped to his shirt which read: "Mr. Brad Delp. I am a lonely soul."

1997 - 24-year-old rapper Notorious B.I.G. was shot and fatally wounded as he was traveling back to his hotel after leaving a Los Angeles awards party. Born Christopher Wallace, the artist - also known as Biggie Smalls - was a gangster rap icon and regarded by many as one of hip-hop's finest MCs.

1987 - U2 released The Joshua Tree, their first album to top the US charts. In addition to becoming the fastest-selling album in the UK, where it spent 201 weeks on the Official Charts, it also had the distinction of being the first album to sell a million copies in the recently introduced CD format.

Tonight's music history is all about years ending in seven. Seven's the key number!

Mark Carney secured a landslide victory in the Liberal Party leadership contest and will be sworn in as prime minister within days, replacing Justin Trudeau.

In his victory speech, Carney said his government would stand firm against unfair trade practices.

“The Canadian government is rightly retaliating with our own tariffs. My government will keep our tariffs on until the Americans show us respect — and make credible, reliable commitments to free and fair trade,” said Carney.

24 That's a nice story on the Burger King restaurant.

I've been to a lot of chain restaurants that have the feel of country diners: sometimes it's the staff, sometimes the customers, sometimes the basic ambience. McDonald's used to have that at some of their franchises, before they were all torn down and replaced with those cheerless gray prison cells.

I had never really thought about it. Then one day, I happened upon the movie Kinky Boots - the cross dressing character was talking with the shoe designer about specifications for high heeled footwear for men. It was actually quite interesting!

Heels became popular when the stirrup was invented... helped you stay on the damn horse.... and the bigger the heal, the more leeway you had until you came out of the stirrup....

A 10-year-old boy was crushed to death after his 340-pound foster mom sat on him for five minutes for "acting up," according to court documents viewed by Express US.

Jennifer Wilson told police that Dakota Stevens ran away from her home earlier that same morning and was misbehaving after being retrieved from a neighbor's house, which included the 91-pound child throwing himself on the front lawn outside her home, at which point she sat on him while calling his caseworker. The child was reported to be screaming before he eventually stopped moving, according to the court documents.

Wilson claimed she thought the child was faking being hurt until she saw his eyelids go pale when she rolled him over and was described as being "visibly distraught" while speaking to responding police as Dakota lied motionless and without a pulse. The boy was airlifted to a hospital, however, doctors were unable to save his life. Dakota was taken off life support two days later, just one month after being placed in Wilson's custody.

Ring camera footage unearthed by authorities shows Wilson sitting on Dakota's head and neck as he desperately screamed before going silent.

134 Let’s say, for example, a state imposes a provider tax on hospitals that raises $100 million. And then it returns that $100 million to the hospitals in the form of higher Medicaid reimbursement rates. There’s been no increase in benefits. Providers aren’t better off. But the state gets an extra $50 million from the federal government’s matching fund, money that it can use for anything it wants. (The fed pays states up to 90% to cover the cost of expanding Medicaid under Obamacare.)

An Oregon state representative once called it a “dream tax.” States can use Medicaid to steal money from the federal treasury. It’s such a wonderful dream that Alaska is the only state in the nation that hasn’t leveraged it.

We’re not talking pennies here. The Congressional Budget Office figures that the 10-year cost of this tax scam is more than $600 billion, which is almost exactly what Republicans are eyeing in savings from Medicaid. Provider taxes are now the second largest source of funds for Medicaid.

But why can't your guys stay float with something a bit less than the competition artificially inflated to four times the price???

Maybe, just maybe, you are actually just fucking over your fellow Canuks to enrich your crony dairy farmers?

It might have made some sense as a diversionary attack in its first week, but when they kept pumping men and equipment into it, it just meant the Russians didn't have to drive so far to kill Ukrainians. What should have been a big, quick raid turned into a meat grinder.

If they wear the habit, and not some pantsuit or something, and the veil, then they are probably not terribly political and are mostly religious.

Yeah, I went to Edgewood College when I was studying to become a Dominican Sister. Those ladies were slightly to the left of Stalin. Some were very religious, which meant very little politics, and I genuinely liked them, but the militant pantsuit ladies? No thanks.

I went to the Motherhouse in Sinsinawa, and in the chapel were three elderly sisters, in full habit, quietly praying the rosary. Up front were the pantsuit ladies, praising Gaia or some damned thing. Most unsettling.

A few years later the Bishop of Madison walked into the Benedictine Abbey north of town and took Our Lord out of the tabernacle. He said He had been abused long enough. They were essentially cut off from the Church for their misbehavior.

You gotta check before you trust.

286 So, this happened: I am getting ready to go on a road trip from Arizona to North Carolina, and I figured it would be smart to hang an oil change on the Suburban, since it has been giving me electronags on the dash display. So I bought a filter, and six quarts of synthetic oil, and went to a friend's place to use his hoist, which makes it easy. Of course we had to move a trailer away so we could get at the hoist...
'Burb on hoist, oil drained, filter changed, all went well. Moved trailer again, I backwed it off the hoist, turned it around, and parked in a far corner of the yard. Engine showing good oil pressure, too, as it should. We shift trailer around again, clean up, drink a couple of beers. Friend leaves, I am right behind him. Not! Start the truck, put shifter lever in gear, and nothing happens. Ray's last words to me, "call me if you have any trouble." There minutes later, I call, "Ray, you're not going to believe this..."

Turns out the plastic bushing in the bottom end of the shifter cable split and fell out, leaving the cable disconnected from the transmission. I made a "squeeze clip" from a flat washer, for a temporary fix. O'Reilly's has a Dorman kit for it.

I am still here. I was watching videos of guys hunting gold nuggets with metal detectors in the Arizona desert. They are digging little wiry nuggets out of crevices in the rock, and speculating about which creek washed them down there, and never even consider the possibility that what they are finding is gold formed in place, and simply concentrated by downward movement in the soil as the rock around it is weathered.

318 I'm watching NASCAR replays and listening to obscure solo artists from the late 80s (David Baerwald).

Also, it's my birthday! I'm...old. Anyway, nothing much planned today. Just a year older. Nothing special.

320 Morning, fellow insomaniacals,

I suppose I've adjusted to DST. I got a 90-minute nap yesterday afternoon, as I usually do on Sat. & Sun., so that caught up some of the lost hour; and six and a half hours last night, which is good for me on a school night. I dislike the extra light in the evening, which to me heralds the long hot summer that looms over us. Seasonal Affective Disorder in reverse, I guess.

Anyway! It's Monday, yes, but remember: Compared to being on the wrong side of the ground, even a bad Monday is pretty small kumquats, nicht wahr?

Glamorgan, in the form of Merthyr Tydfil, is the origin of one of the two families that came together to constitute my one quarter Welsh ancestral line. The other family came through Celyn uchaf house, Llanddeiniolen, Carnarvonshire.

Both left Wales in the 1840s and met in Columbia County, Wisconsin.
