‘Stranded’ NASA astronaut backs Elon Musk in rescue row NASA astronaut Butch Wilmore, stranded on the International Space Station since June, said Tuesday he believes Elon Musk’s claim that the billionaire proposed an early rescue plan, but it was ultimately rejected by then-President Joe Biden. Wilmore and fellow astronaut Suni Williams were originally scheduled for an eight-day mission, but their return was complicated when the Boeing Starliner spacecraft they were testing was deemed unsafe for the journey home. Their prolonged stay has recently become a point of contention, with Musk and President Donald Trump accusing Biden’s administration of abandoning the pair to avoid making Musk look like a savior. “I can only say that Mr. Musk, what he says is absolutely factual,” said Wilmore, a former Navy test pilot. He admitted he wasn’t privy to the ins and outs of the drama, but added, “I believe him. I don’t know all those details.” Posted by: andycanuck (/tzYP) at March 04, 2025 07:45 PM (/tzYP) Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at March 04, 2025 07:45 PM (kBSKe) 11

Stars, when you study them, are really kinda scary.
I like the tidbit that, if sound could travel in a vacuum, we wouldn't have developed hearing. Because the roar from the Sun, 93 million miles or so away, would be so loud that hearing anything would be impossible. That's one reason, among several, why Dyson spheres, while they seem cool, are silly. Posted by: People's Hippo Voice at March 04, 2025 07:48 PM (xkwZj) 19

Giving Musk a rescue mission would cause heartburn to be sure, but I doubt that he was the primary factor. I think Boeing was the primary factor. Boeing is too big and too important with too much capital - real capital and the ever-vital political capital - tied up in it. It's damn near a state-controlled enterprise. Far more than making Musk look good, I think the government was *desperate* for a Boeing win. This disaster has made it increasingly clear that SpaceX is damn near a single source for American space activity now, and Boeing is falling apart even with its tremendous state backing. It's a political disaster and Musk is the least of it. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at March 04, 2025 07:51 PM (kBSKe) 29

Yeah Crichton movies are a mixed bag, but the ones that were done well turned out great. Coma, Looker, Jurassic Park, Andromeda Strain all pretty solid.
The published a book recently that was his first effort but was rejected by publishers called "Dragon Teeth." Its about Archaeologists fighting over theories and who gets to dig where in the USA, mixed with cowboys in the old west. Its all based on actual historical events and the fight gets deadly. I mean: dinosaurs and cowboys, how is this not a movie already? Oh yeah. The climate scare book. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at March 04, 2025 08:18 PM (2VST1) 103
Andromeda Strain still can scare the pants off you.
Thank goodness Project Wildfire wasn't turned into sequel city as Jurassic Park was. But then again a few years ago someone, not Crichton, tried to write a sequel to Andromeda Strain and it is garbage. Posted by: Anna Puma at March 04, 2025 08:19 PM (M7Uyw) 104

There is a signal going out and they follow its trajectory and find Humans evaced on a large fleet of ships. I think this incident is very telling as regards the basic psychology of the left and the right.
The left loves to sublimate their own individual identities into an amoeba-like mass. They are the party that still can't stop talking about Fucking Woodstock. They love protests, they love "mass movements," they love unleashing their ids and destroying things as part of a mass of rioters which acts without reason or conscience. The right prizes individuality and is suspicious of "mass" movements. The Democrats are the party of French revolutionaries storming the Bastille and murdering political prisoners suspected of "treason" against the Republic. They're the party of the Communist Revolution and of Mao and of Pol Pot's attempt to bring utopia to earth by the mass murder of doctors, teachers, and all professional class workers. And while they reject the idea vehemently, they're also the party of adoring Hitler and feeling greater than themselves through state-coordinated, party-enforced mass psychosis. === Ace, this is brilliant. Congratulations. Posted by: San Franpsycho at March 04, 2025 08:26 PM (RIvkX) 131

I have made a point of trying to read the original books of every movie that I have liked. Some of them its hard to see how they saw a movie in them. Others are just not nearly as good as the film (Psycho, for example, and Die Hard). But usually, the book is far better. I liked the film Shane but the book is incredible. I loved True Grit but the book is an all time classic, its magnificent.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at March 04, 2025 08:36 PM (2VST1) There's no friction in space to speak of, the ship would just cycle around earth orbit. And pointing is not natural. Reminds me of an old TV movie "earth II". Space station sees a nuke armed "missile" in orbits, snatches it and takes it into the bay. Someone's wife "fires it into the sun" by aiming out the bay door to the Sun. They track it and it would re-enter over Chicago. They manage to catch it and bring it back in and disable the firing mechanics. In reality even that nudge probably would have the bomb slowly creeping away from the station in an orbit instead of dropping out of it. Posted by: Oldcat at March 04, 2025 08:46 PM (n7h9X) 225

There's no friction in space to speak of, the ship would just cycle around earth orbit. And pointing is not natural.
Correct, the objection was "it takes too much fuel to reach the sun" to which I noted "you don't have to use fuel to get the whole way, just get it on its way to solar orbit and it will be destroyed by the sun" Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at March 04, 2025 08 "On its way to solar orbit" can't be done in one blast instantly. Your velocity along earths orbital path remans and has to be continually cancelled with more thrusting in a different direction. You will run out of fuel. Not to mention Earth will be pulling you back to it as well and that vector will have to be managed. Posted by: Oldcat at March 04, 2025 09:03 PM (n7h9X) 282

Yes, the delta v to get into a low solar orbit is substantial. To just crash into the sun, you still need to shed much of the earth orbital velocity, plus the delta-v to get out of the earth's gravity well. To get into a low orbit around the sun would require even more.
The Parker solar probe needed to get into such an orbit. To save fuel they did a lot of tricks, which included many braking slingshot around Venus and Mercury, and even some clever solar wind surfing. It took a long time.. Posted by: Publius on Stupid Phone at March 04, 2025 09:22 PM (w6EFb) 292

Posted by: Don Black. I wonder if it's dawned on the Pens that they are/should be rebuilding. They are NOT a playoff team. There time has passed and they had a good run. Three Stanley Cups ain't bad but it's over. They are hovering near the bottom in the East, if not last place. They need to rebuild. ""As a wise man once said,
Man has always dreamed of destroying the Sun"" Actually, that was an entire episode of Mr. Show "Man has always dreamed of destroying the MOON" the payload was to be taken up by a sentient chimp, who asked "Why?" so they got rid of him and got a non-talking chimp to do the job. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTJ3LIA5LmA Much better cultural references than the Simpsons Posted by: docweasel at March 04, 2025 11:19 PM (sy8ig) Processing 0.04, elapsed 0.0415 seconds. |
