Belloni for years has been beating on Kennedy like she owes him money, and this week he reported Kennedy was retiring. I recall he essentially did the same thing more than a year ago, and yet here she still is, producing The Mandalorian movie and prepping the Shawn Levy-directed Star Wars film that Ryan Gosling is circling, as well as numerous other film and streaming projects with A-list participants.Really? It didn't seem like your make-it-up-on-the-day sequel trilogy had a plan.
Still, the trades followed with gusto, dishing speculative reporting on who might succeed Kennedy. The takeaway was chaos and that Kennedy was being pushed. The reality is different and far more orderly. According to insiders, Kennedy has been working on a succession plan for a couple years, eyeing candidates from within in process with Bob Iger and Alan Bergman... I admire Belloni's hustle and ability to turn over hard ground, but his penchant for defining industry people like Kennedy in disparaging ways, well, I just don't understand that. ... Kennedy arguably is the most successful female producer/executive in Hollywood history. She has produced more than 70 films that have collected 120 Oscar noms and 25 wins, and she herself was awarded the honorary Oscar with the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award, with eight other Oscar noms. What's troubling and frustrating is that our development gets scrutinized, and I don't know any other production company where their development gets scrutinized like that. It's very hard for anything to happen within Star Wars without some aspect of it becoming public before you even want it to become public. So I guess managing the message in some way is also quite a challenge because, of course, not every single thing we put in development we going to make. That's not unusual. We want to make those things that we feel are the best. We want to make those things that, as time passes, feel relevant to what the audience is responding to. So there's constant discussion around that. So yeah, that's a tricky one because a lot of the scrutiny around Star Wars and the negativity has been about development. Of course, we're going to develop lots of different things with an understanding that not everything gets made.
KENNEDY: Well, I keep waiting for Taika [Waititi], and he is working with another writer now. He's so busy. I love him. I think if we ever do get a script from Taika, it's going to be fantastic. I already saw a first act that I loved, but tying him down, it's tricky. DEADLINE: I still remember seeing his Thor: Ragnarok, entering with low expectations, watching his exuberant vision and thinking, "This is what you want when you go to a movie theater on a Saturday night." KENNEDY: It's so true. And that's exactly the tone we're always looking for with filmmakers who can pull that off. It's not like they're a dime a dozen. The serials on the big movie streaming sites seem to have a little bit of nudity in the first season that goes down to none in the following seasons. Maybe thinking to draw in viewers and then keep them with stellar plot and character development. But they don't execute on the latter.

Essentially, as far as he can tell, there are 20 million + people who SSA thinks are alive who are dead. Some are getting SS payments, but the bigger fraud is that people are using those SSN's to collect unemployment, go on SSDI, commit medicare / medicaid fraud, etc.
What he has not mentioned yet is that it's very likely those SSNs are also being used by illegals.
Anyways, Social Security refuses to clean up their databases so that's his next battle.

Steve Jackson released a larger version relatively recently, with a bigger map and 3-D Ogres. It looks very cool.
An aside - I played with my middle kid awhile back as he was the age I was when I got into it. He was cocky that he had 30+ units against my one. Less cocky when I wiped the map with him. I love that game.

It's been charming old NYC-based rom-com week at Ranchero naturalfake this week
We saw "Moonstruck" with Cher, Nicholas Cage and a bunch of great character actors. Great script, great acting, great directing. You'lll smile through the whole thing.
Then last night we saw "Crossing Delancey", which isn't quite as charming since it gives us the old "I don't need no man" bit as one of the complications. It stars, well I forget their names but it stars Steven Spielberg's one-time wife, one of the Animal House guys and the guy who played a Russian in a James Bond movie.
You mile through this one too, and-
BONUS! Has a wonderful moment where the JB Russian guy recites a Chinese poem to SS's wife. A great bit of setting up the movie plot and giving us a peak into the main character's life. Great stuff.
Both movies are streaming on Criterion now. But, can bee found elsewhere.

But that's why there is this level of bloat in government.
It's all fraud. Well, fraud against the taxpayer, not necessarily fraud against the government.
When money is "wasted" it ends up somewhere. I think we'll find that the vast majority of that "somewhere" is well connected people living like multi millionaires off the "waste".
Just plain being "wasteful" (how we'd describe it) by like, I don't know, leaving the trucks idling and burning fuel when they could have turned them off, or ordering too many reams of paper and some ended up getting moldly and had to be trashed -- that is not the big driver of this.

I decided to read the Heir to the Empire trilogy for the first time since high school.

It's pretty good for a post-ROTJ story, definitely a lot better than Kevin J. Anderson's insane Jedi Academy trilogy which came later. It has a few cringe moments and leaps of logic, but is overall solid, has decent plotting and additions to the universe, and the new characters like Mara Jade and Garm Bel Iblis feel like they'd fit right into the original trilogy.
The fanbase in general rate it way too highly, though. You're not reading a literary masterpiece on par with War and Peace, but that's how they talk about it.
There are examples of excellent Warhammer 40k books that are also excellent sci-fi books (check out Horus Rising). The old Star Wars EU that they decanonized was good sci-fi pulp, but never really rose above that.
Also I dropped out of it right before the whole New Jedi Order arc, which was widely hated at the time but is now beloved.

There are examples of excellent Warhammer 40k books that are also excellent sci-fi books (check out Horus Rising). The old Star Wars EU that they decanonized was good sci-fi pulp, but never really rose above that.
Also I dropped out of it right before the whole New Jedi Order arc, which was widely hated at the time but is now beloved.

I just finished reading The New Jedi Order (all 19 books).
Is it great literature? Don't be ridiculous. Of course not.
Is it decent space opera? Yep. Better than most, I think. It kept me entertained for a month and I was rarely bored, though there are a few parts that slogged. But that's typical in a long-running series.

I think the US intel agencies knew damn well that the USSR was not in any way an economic or military peer or threat to the US, but they had to hype the threat of nuclear winter to keep the money flowing for all of those years.
