First World Problems...

That is a simple light switch with a sliding dimmer on the right. And after 21 years, this poorly designed switch failed! Not because of any internal issues, but because the plastic along the sliding dimmer cracked. Apparently it can only handle the mild heat from the switch for a short time.

What is the world coming to?

What's next...my toothbrushes from the 1990s are going to start to fail?

I found a shower gel that is perfectly comfortable for me to use and have been using it for about 20 years. I called the retailer to order some more and they told me it's temporarily unavailable because California has required that they reformulate it.

This happened once before and the government-mandated "improvement" meant including an unnecessary preservative that stung my eyes and made my skin itch. There was such an outcry from customers that the company was able to lobby to return to the original formula, fortunately.

Anyway, wish me luck with the new formula.

I have a number of Lutron switches throughout my home.
There are master switches which light up along the slide and there are the cheaper slave switches.
The pictured switch appears to be a slave.

Some of my multiple connected switches form groups of three, one master and two slaves.
All of my Lutron switches still work after nearly 20 years and none are broken.

What concerns me is my Honeywell environmental control box that I had to replace about 5 years ago.
I think I'll go out and buy a new one or two before I they can't be replaced after Honeywell goes out of business.

I have that beat: mine’s a glass top stove with no physical controls. It’s all touch-sensitive “buttons” located between the coils.

Now, anyone who knows touch-sensitive controls knows they’re very wonky. Water can set them off. Metal can set them off. So they added a “lock” button you “press” for three seconds to prevent the controls from changing.

Otherwise, a little condensation, a metal lid, a spoon or your unsuspecting finger might accidentally turn a burner on. Genius!

Turned on the heat yesterday and it didn't come on. Thermostat didn't click. Searched the internet for the same model Honeywell - obsolete - purchased the most similar model. No heat yet.

It was originally a T shape plastic glued on. The upper, horizontal section was glued to the bottom of the door and is stiff. The lower, vertical leg of the T is more flexible and is the sealing portion when the door is closed. It is that lower arm section that is partially ripped. I could take the door off and replace the whole seal, but that could be costly.

I had surgery for a kidney stone in 2023. The way the urologist explained it to me was that if the stone is more than 6mm, it will have to be surgically removed.

It also depends on the composition of the stone. If it is a calcium-based stone, whatever you drink or eat will not have much impact on reducing the size (that was what my stone turned out to be - one (1) centimeter in size.

When it blocked my ureter, it wasn't painful. My body reacted by preventing me from eating or drinking - whatever went down went immediately back up.

See a urologist if you haven't already done so.

I've got an LED bulb (one of the Philips models from back when they cost around $50) that's been burning continuously for going on *16 years*. When it finally conks out, it'll get a salute.

Oddly, the $2 LED bulbs from today usually only last a year or two, if that.

I have been getting about 5 years out of LED bulbs before they fail or the light turns purple. Way less for those tiny little bulbs I have to put in the ceiling fan lights. Those things are trash and I wish I could find decent incandescent bulbs to use in those fixtures.

Same. Especially for acute pain. People almost never get hooked on opioids for short-term acute. It’s the use for long-term chronic pain that alters your nervous system and makes it hard to get off.

Which isn’t a reason to deny meds for chronic pain. They hyperventilating about the opioid crisis ignores that a lot of the problem came from the FDA, pharma companies and doctors pushing oxycodone like hell, getting millions of people dependent, and then yanking their meds, leaving millions in agonizing pain and sending them to illegal channels for relief.

I received at least 7 prescription medicines for my kidney stone surgery post-op, including 500mg acetomeniphine and oxycodone. I didn't open a single bottle of that stuff. The worst thing was passing the pulverized remains of the stone after the urologist broke it up with his laser probe thing. Three days of significant pain. I was already on blood thinners after the heart attack, so the asprin was out.

Where I am at the water table is about 10" in the winter and 13 feet in the summer (we are on heavy clay here so surface water features bigly) and the stories of people digging dry wells to drain their basements in the summer to discover they have created a way to channel water directly into their basements because the drain is below the winter water table is legendary.

You probably want to get a trash pump or a service in to pump out the tank and then see where the water is coming from.

This seems more realistic in light of the anti homo sentiment and laws in Russia.

Exposure to sunlight is the great destroyer. Atmospheric pollutants do not help, either.

The last I read, the USS Virginia made a U turn to open waters without refueling. That's a problem, CBD. First, Starmer gives Zelensky a hug, then the King engages in a meet and greet AFTER the Zelensky tantrum in the Oval Office. Then Norway allows a "private" company to turn away a US warship. That's not a coincidence.
