THE MORNING RANT: Additional Executive Orders to Put Before President Trump

The cavalcade of Executive Orders being signed by Donald Trump, along with the personnel upheaval he is inflicting on the bureaucracy, has made the past seven days the most politically extraordinary week I’ve ever seen.

Ronald Reagan’s first 100 days as President can’t hold a candle to Trump’s first 100 hours of this term. Of course, Reagan took office in the era when overhauling government required laws to be passed by Congress. But President Obama famously arrogated lawmaking powers unto himself, because he had “a pen and a phone.” Congress has also long since outsourced its lawmaking powers to the federal bureaucracy, and since the Chief Executive (President Trump) is head of the Executive Branch bureaucracy, here we are.

As magical as the past week has been, President Trump will continue to have his all-powerful sharpie pen and phone for 207 more weeks, so let’s keep the Executive Orders coming!

Below are some additional Executive Orders that I’d like to see, which haven’t happened yet to my knowledge.

• Gas Cans: Repeal the EPA regulations that have rendered gas cans inoperable. Restore the freedom to manufacture and purchase traditional gas cans with vents.

• Corporate Average Fuel Economy: Terminate all automotive Corporate Average Fuel Economy (“CAFE” regulations. Manufacturers and consumers will find the right balance between size, features, and gas mileage. Ironically (but consistent with government incompetence), the CAFE laws had the real-world effect of eliminating small pickups trucks.

• Regulatory Sunset: Declare a sunset date in the near future (perhaps 12/31/2025) for every federal regulation not specifically codified into a law passed by Congress or already eliminated / modified by an Executive Order from President Trump. If the federal agencies want the existing regulations extended further, they would need President Trump to attach his signature. If Congress doesn’t like this, then they can pass actual laws.

• PBS & NPR: Impound all funding to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting for violating its charter, which states that, “The Corporation may not contribute to or otherwise support any political party or candidate for elective public office.” NPR & PBS are now quite openly propaganda arms of the Democrat Party.

• NGOs: Impound all funding to domestic non-governmental organizations, and permanently ban the State Department from funding any foreign NGOs. There is no reason for the US State Department (and US taxpayers) to be funding LGBT inclusion activities for Bulgarian youths.

• United Nations: Defund the UN, which is an anti-semitic, anti-American, terrorist-enabling organization. (A UN facility was apparently used by Hamas to hold the Israeli hostages who were just released.) Related – strip all foreign UN staff and delegates of any privileges, immunities, and special perks.

• Federal Pensions: Move all federal employees from pensions to 401ks.

• Student Loans: Mandate that henceforth, any student loan originated by a university for the benefit of that university is fully guaranteed by that university. If President Biden had the authority to unilaterally waive repayment of student loans, then President Trump has the authority to unilaterally require a university’s guaranty on student loans going forward.

• NOAA’s Corrupted Temperature Records: Restore all historic NOAA temperature records to their original readings before they were retroactively adjusted by corrupt climate scientist for the purpose of artificially creating a record showing a warming trend.

• NOAA’s Ghost Stations: Prohibit NOAA from using “readings” from ghost stations. It’s beyond absurd, but NOAA is currently incorporating temperature readings from hundreds of “Ghost stations.” These stations don’t even exist any longer, so NOAA just fabricates an estimated temperature and incorporates it into their data base, which then shows a warming trend.

• EPA Regulations on New Semi-Trucks: Terminate the EPA regulations to take effect for 2027 year-model semi-trucks. The manufactures have been ordered to implement new mass-market technologies that are untested and still somewhat hypothetical. The EPA might as well have ordered them to spin straw into gold.

• Woke Capital: Prohibit investment management firms (BlackRock, State Street, etc) from casting shareholder proxy votes to advance a political agenda at the expense of its fiduciary responsibilities. Include punitive personal penalties for those investment fund executives who, as custodian of investors’ funds, use them for ulterior purposes. Black Rock and State Street executives should fear being lumped in with Enron executives in the public consciousness. They should also fear going to jail for fiduciary misconduct.

• Too Big to Fail: Order that any bank or financial services company that is “too big to fail” be broken up into smaller companies that are not too big to fail.

This is just a quick list I was able to jot down, but with a President seeking to make generational change via the power given him with Executive Orders, let’s keep the momentum going!

Not sure the US has the current money for that kinda payout...you're talking an enormous sum of money, all dragged into current year...and then that whole sum would get buried somewhere, exploding or imploding markets.

The better plan is to transition the system and give folks pensions based on their years frozen now when they retire...and then 401K the rest from then on...so for many, a hybrid system and then new employees are solely 401K...

There was never any incentive from either uniparty to lessen it, because they were always part of the club that would own it. Instead of using the actual data from Canada's 100 Arctic weather stations [BTW, we used to have ca. 1,000 I've read], NOAA takes the data from one station at the very southern border of the Arctic Circle and extrapolates its data for the rest of the Canadian Arctic!

Trump seems to be unwinding what Biden, Obama, and many before him did. This could get out of hand, of course, but most recognize it will take drastic action to reset the nation's course.

As a matter of law (not executive orders), government can certainly 'take' property including pensions and has actually done so in the past during the Depression under FDR affecting even Supreme Court justices. Justice Holmes, well into his upper 80's if not 90, joked he would not have as much to support himself in his old age.

The key word to any taking is 'due process of law' and a pension is treated by law somewhat similarly to that of a physical piece of property if you are legally vested. As an individual, you have protections from being treated differently than other government employees, as a whole group, Congress is not bound to continue current treatment and can alter conditions the same as they can for Social Security pensioners.

Complicated analysis but yes, I would say that fedgov could give a lump sum payout of future obligations as a group.

My doubt (and those of others here) before Trump took office is that he would continue to play nice and that the reforms taken would be too little, too late to avoid our financial crunch coming up in a few years. Those doubts have been alleviated that Trump did not know what time it is. It remains to be seen what happens when the old regime starts to fight back to protect their grift, perks, privileges, etc.

I give tremendous credit for Trump for trying to resolve issues that have built up since FDR and LBJ to save the American ship of state. We shall see if others fall in line and join him in his efforts.

Not completely. Under the old CSRS system, it was all pension. Under the "new" (as of 1982 or so) FERS system, it's a reduced pension and what is effectively a 401k.

Who would do it would be actuaries that do that as their day job. They would figure out the Net Present Value (NPV) of a particular existing pension (and future pensions), expected group life expectancy, etc.

Hate to tell you Archimedes but technically they could give the payout to you in US bonds, land script, whatever as long as it was technically a government obligation. The history of pensions from Govt, dates from Revolutionary times and the govt has done things to pay veterans pensions various ways (and also screw them as well).

If you are interested in the history of pensions, Theda Skolpol wrote a book about pensions in the 1800's.

In the Senate, all votes are orchestrated by the majority leader which is why not one damn senator moved (privileged motion btw) to recess on the GOP side during first term. Control of the floor in the House comes from the Speaker and the Rules Committee that crafts how votes go. Control of the floor in the Senate is based on the fiction of unanimous consent and all sorts of procedural rules that can be waived or not depending on the majority (and to some extent minority) leader's whims.

Fed healthcare plans are the same as "civilian" ones, and typically cost the Fed Employee more in pre-tax. Fed employees pay about 30% cost for their healthcare plans. The pension part of FERS is a small amount, and Feds now pay I think 5% of there salary towards it (with an agency match). The TSP (401K) only has index funds, but you do get a 5% match I believe.

The Jacksonian deal that Marty Van Buren (founder of the modern party system) did was to pick the majority faction of each state and let them control patronage of postmasters, port authorities, etc. in their state, in turn they gave loyalty to the Jackson administration. The Whigs scrambled and they ended up with the rump factions in each state that were excluded from patronage and thus we got a two party system again.

If you eliminate Daylight Savings Time, the only logical answer is to revert to Standard Time year-round, as it was before DST was implemented. No good reason why businesses, schools, etc. could not have "Winter Hours" and "Summer Hours", such things to be decided by local vote.

The killing of the Tea Party was an encirclement movement, first you get the Koch Brothers creating fake organizations, you get McConnell okaying the Dems to go after Tea Party groups via the IRS, the grifting uniparty coalition in each state promoted 'influencers' to hijack the amorphous leadership of these groups, and McConnell funded establishment candidates and made sure anti-establishment types lost from lack of funding or even direct criticism. I also think manipulation of primary voting was done--see McDaniel's loss in MS facing the ga ga Thad Cochran. McConnell and his uniparty buddies activated black voters to vote in the GOP primary to save Thad's seat.

There is a good book out there to be written if someone cared enough to piss off the PTB to write it.

It's everywhere blue. We had a state level mandate. Now we have these 8 cent ultrathick bags that are too heavy to carry for a lot of people when full, and they have little secondary use without being 2-4x the plastic waste as the old "polluting" ones, even though every place had a bag recycle bin, which are nowhere to be found for the new plastic monstrosities.

It is a case study of "unintended" consequences.

That's my position, but the trouble is a lot of life is now "slave to the clock" rather than the sun. A lot of people want daylight after quitting time based on the clock time of 5PM.

Big Retail and Big Leisure (golf) love light after quitting time, and they are one of the biggest lobbying forcing behind more DST.

Funny thing is a lot of store actually go by the sun, really. Come summer, on DST, the Big Boxes will extend their closing time to 10PM, or even 10:30PM. In the morning the switch to DST takes care of the morning side, but even then somtimes they will open earlier in the peak of summer.

My favorite idea:
REQUIRE the Center for Medicare Services to declare that ONLY citizens - born or naturalized - are eligible for government services/benefits/entitlements.
Non-citizens MAY enroll in Marketplace plans, but WITHOUT subsidies from the Federal government.
Others MAY pick up the cost - their home government, employers (but they may NOT deduct the cost on their income taxes), or individuals/groups. The only nonprofits that may cover the cost are those not receiving ANY government money.
For those who actually look at the CMS website, it's clear that they consider those with 'temporary protection from deportation' to be ELIGIBLE for ALL entitlements. The CMS ruling is used by more than health services, so once they have that "entitlement eligibility", ALL government programs are fair game.
The worst offenders of the entitlements game are the Title I schools - in many of them, they make a decision NOT to individually check eligibility, but declare that ALL students will receive the free lunch. I know personally of at least 4 schools that did that, with NO repercussions for that action.
