First-World Problems...

ShutUp543.jpg

No Sh*t!

It's eight degrees out; of course ice is possible.

I don't want my car to nag me. I don't need being reminded that when it is cold, sometimes the roads are icy. If I needed that sort of nanny-state bullsh*t, then maybe I shouldn't be allowed to drive. Or cross the street alone.

20 I have to turn off the ASR on my rabbit to drive in snow, so it gives me the wavy road precaution symbol. Yeah yeah VW, but if the ASR is on the darned wheels will spin in snow and create ice. Unless you can be smarter with your 'help' then it becomes my hindrance.

And I used to say this about all the help for airline pilots. One of the issues is the pilots get bored and lose focus; they should have the computers doing less so that the pilots stay somewhat engaged.

It does have a thingamadammit that dings when the temperature is below 35°. Evidently the car just wants me to notice that it's cold outside. Dings once and then leaves me alone to drive in peace for whatever conditions. But it doesn't do that when it's below freezing when the car starts. Only if the temp falls while it's already running.

56 You know, this is a FWP that Trump could potentially solve. Don't know if it could be done by EO, but at least a law could be enacted requiring manufacturers to freely publish all the source code for their embedded operating systems. Let hacker world find ways to alter the programming. Also supply the pinouts and expected inputs/outputs for each pin in each socket. And have this apply to all embedded systems, automotive, industrial, and appliances. I would also allow manufacturers to void the warranty if an owner-applied hack broke something. Probably, embedded systems in highway coaches, transit vehicles, and airliners should be exempted from this rule.

I don't know if you saw my response to your post 454 about the post office pensions on last nights ONT?

The reason my dad was able to retire at 20 years was he had reached 65 years old. Even in the private sector, when we had pensions, which is no more, normal retirement was 65 provided you had 5 years of service.

Good luck with your car search.

When Road & Track did a review of the car, they had a picture of that switch, with the caption, 'There's a nagging woman who lives under this switch'.

Incindentally, those warnings were actually recorded on a tiny vinyl record and played by a tiny record player which indexed the 'tonearm' to the appropriate recording.

The FORScan app (used mostly on Fords) can do a fair amount of stuff. Changing "default" startup options for example... so certain nanny features are either off, or set at their lowest setting. IIRC it can also do some basic engine mapping stuff too.

It took me a long time to stop expecting my dad to show up for our Tuesday lunch. Watching his truck go by could be hard, even though he's been gone for 5 years.
I sold his truck and tore down the house he grew up in. He's probably never gonna forgive me.

111 The absolute worst thing about new cars is the generic "check engine" light. What the hell does that mean?
Last time I got that warning online for my make, model and year and it said it could be everything from a loose gas tank lid, which I don't have, to needing new rings.
That really narrowed it down.
-------
For about 20 bucks, you can get an OBD2 reader that plugs in to the connector down under that dash which will narrow it down. For a couple of hundred you can get one which will do most of the work in narrowing it down for you. For $10,000, you can get the manufacturer's version that will identify the exact problem in about 70% of the cases.

"Who do I look like? A carpenter".
When she asks him to fix the sink, he says,

Finally fed up the husband leaves for the local bar. He comes back a few hours later, and finds the door is fixed as well as the sink. When he asks his wife, she says,
"After you left, I sat on the steps to the door crying. A nice, handsome gentleman walked by and saw me and asked why. I told him about the door and sink and he told me, 'I'll fix them for you if you make me a cake or make passionate love to me'."
Husband replies, "So what kind of cake did you make him?"

228 Even better, you can just stop in at any NAPA and they will read the computer for you for free. Which is what I did. The code said my regulator was bad but the guy at NAPA said it was like a super duper warning not just a normal one. So I picked one up and made an appointment with my local mechanic to have him throw it in. My appointment was 4 days later. The light turned itself off after 2 days.
-------
I'm pretty sure that most of the chains (O'Reilly, etc) will read the codes for you.
But why did you have to wait 2 days for the light to turn off? All of the OBD2 readers - and I assume your mechanic has one - , even the cheapest ones, can turn off the check engine light. If the problem isn't fixed it'll turn back on again, but there's no reason to wait for the car to take enough readings to determine that the problem is fixed.

I wasn't clear. The guy at NAPA said he could not turn off this particular warning. The computer gave a code red kind of message that he said his tool could not override and had to be done by a mechanic with a more advanced kind of tool.

Speaking of zesting a lime, I stumbled across something in my utensil drawer the other day and had no idea how it got in there. I accumulate utensils from here and there every time I move. Go to storage or wherever and there's another drawer full of them.

So I find this thing and use it to chop some nuts. OMG what a revelation. This is the greatest nut chopper of all time. I can tell by looking at it that it's special in some way; it's got a nice painted wood handle and the business part of it is SHARP stainless steel. I turn it this way and that, see it's a "Nutbrown Vegetable Chopper" made in England.

I run to the internet. These things are available on e-bay. "Vintage" Nutbrown utensils.

I search. Nutbrown was founded by Thomas Nutbrown in 1932 and made the greatest little kitchen utensils ever until they shut down in 2019. Darn.

290 I know not to go off topic in these threads, but while this post has been up a series of hilarious events have just happened:
1) Columbia refused to allow US planes carrying returning migrants to land
2) Trump dropped a mighty and righteous sanctions and tariff bomb on Columbia, and
3) Columbia folded like a cheap lawn chair and said they were sorry.

All of that just in the last couple of hours, it’s amazing .

Which reminds me of my rant for the day.
Hey you kids, get off.... no, wait, that's not it.
Today's snowflakes evidently are so delicate that they are easily overstimulated. They wear hoodies which eliminate peripheral vision and knit caps over their ears so that sound is muffled.
Idiots, as opposed to morons :-).

308 288 Stateless,
Peace be with you, fine son.

Perhaps giving up
Trumpy and Snowflake is moving a little fast? It's nice to have warm breathing creatures around to talk to and interact with. Are they going up for adoption by strangers when the "owners" get home? Are you going to be ok with that? They seem to have crawled into your heart.

Thank you Nurse. You, Piper and so many others have been so wonderful to me.

They are beautiful cats. But I've been a caregiver forever. I'm not even sure where I'll be living next year.

I haven't been outside the house overnight in almost 10 years. I have a year to create a life, find a career, create stuff. I'm not sure. We'll see.

The cats are amazing but they are in and out, along with the dog Ralphy and I'm going to need to study, work, create. Ralphy, legally my dog, but worshipped Mom and was always by her side, I'll take care of him.

He may be about 14. Rescue dog. We don't know. He sleeps with me now. He's about 50 pounds. When the cats get zoomy around him, he'll bark and put an end to that shit.

My friends will be home this week and we'll discuss what's going to happen.

309 My FWP: A busy Sunday afternoon at the grocery store and the people in self-checkout are gobsmacked by this new technology. They were looking around wide-eyed and open-mouthed in wonderment like Hillary Clinton. Every station.

Catching up...

Nurse, if you're still here, nexttime you get a set of tires tell them to also install new tire pressure sensors in all four new tires. Shoukd be maybe $40/tpms on top of what the new tires cost. Some of the less scrupulous tire marts include that price anywya, but don't change the sensors.

Critical need to know nugget: make them give you the old sensors back and prove to you that they all 4 work before you pay the bill. Ask me how I know. I had a lawyer's office on the phone scheduling a consult in front of the manager of a Pep Boys tire store before they admitted they were wrong and took the charge off when they couldn't produce the old parts.

311 Continued....

In November, I was looking at Ralphy and thinking he may not have another year. Five dollar cans of food he's indifferent about it is. Everything to get him to eat.

Brussel Spouts. Meat logs. Gravy.

I'm tired of being a caregiver.

And I get to reinvent my life. I can travel. Leave Canada. Make a life somewhere. Finally have a family. Increasing mental state to 24%. Thanks Nurse!

I'll talk with my friends. They aren't my cats but they have lived here for the last 4 months so I have a say. I'll want Snowflake and Trumpy to stay together. I'll toss in some of their favorite toys free to any good home.

Starry is their outdoor cat. Mother of both. She's been here for several weeks, barely going outside. Starry and I are old friends. She has kind of a cough but is fine 23.6 hours a day. She's low maintenance so I'll keep her until it's warmer.

I don't know what's going to happen to me so I'd like to find these beautiful animals a loving home.

The sweet and loving cats are wonderful until I spend 6 to 10 pm letting them in and out and then get a 6:30 am wake up call. Which I now ignore. I have 3 litter boxes out. I've let them out at 6:30 am, they come in fast.

314 "Ice Possible, Drive with care."

Oh really? Thanks for warning me car! I certainly wouldn't have realized that ice was possible on my own. It's not like the fact that every square inch of skin exposed to the air was nearly crystalized by the time I got out to the car was any kind of indication. Or the 3 inch snotsicle that just broke off from inside my right nostril and shattered like a crystal glass on impact with the driveway. That wasn't much of a hint either. But you know, that stupid bong accompanied by the snowflake graphic on my dash has absolutely saved my life more times than I can count! It's almost as if those vehicle software engineers at BMW are angels on my shoulder! I really need to meet those wonderful fellows one day soon so I can thank them wholeheartedly! And also choke the everliving crap out of a few of them until they do something to get my dash to stop warning me about the broken dynamic headlight motor I couldn't give two s**ts less about that the car feels the need to tell me about the entire time it is running. Then I would be truly grateful! And in prison for felony assault, but that's ok. As long as the warning is gone, all will be good in life!
