Pete Hegseth Hearings: Democrats, Terrorists, and Trannies (But I Repeat Myself) Turn It Into a Clownshow

First up: the Democrats are mad because the FBI background check turned up nothing at all. The report is called "unremarkable," in the sense that there's nothing there for Democrats to Seize and Pounce Upon.

Sean Spicer said on the 2-Way podcast that Democrats need to be careful about beating up on an actual combat veteran hero, given that so few of them have served. I imagine that Tammy Duckworth is charged with offering the nastiest questions, as she is a combat veteran. I'm curious to see how "Danang Dick" Blumenthal -- who lied about serving in Vietnam -- will comport himself. Will he pretend he's a combat vet who has the moral authority to run Hegseth down? And if he does, will Hegseth play the Danang Dick card in return?

Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa quizzed Pete Hegseth at his Senate confirmation hearing on his stance on women in the military, allowing him to clarify where he stands on the matter after a slew of questions from Democrats.
"Let's make it very clear for everyone here today as Secretary of Defense, will you support women continuing to have the opportunity to serve in combat roles?" Ernst asked President-elect Trump's nominee to lead the Pentagon.
"Yes, women will have access to ground combat roles, combat roles given the standards remain high, and we'll have a review to ensure the standards have not been eroded," Hegseth said.

I will say it.

Allowing women to serve in the military makes us less capable. The miniscule number that could (for a short time) pass the fitness standards for combat would make any unit they are assigned to less capable because men act different with women around. (Israelis found that male soldiers prioritized the safety of female soldiers, for example.)

Secondly, when women take the "support" roles, it means that there are fewer jobs for front lines soldiers to take as a break from the front line. Soldiers shouldn't be expected to be killing at all times, but should have less intense jobs as a "rest" period.

But when women take those jobs, they can't and it puts a greater strain on those who serve in the hardest jobs.

Army does not work that way. You are classified as infantry, you stay a trigger puller until a win or you are broken. Ditto for pilots, etc. Dunno about the Navy but other than officers, as enlisted, you cannot change much without a hassle to a new field in peacetime, let alone a war.

I'm sure a few Republican senators DON'T want him confirmed, but don't have the sense to know voting against him is the end of their career. And there's no McCain with nothing to lose to be the turd in the punchbowl.

As for Hegseth himself...he certainly sounds like he knows the DoD is corrupt and in need of a thorough, painful cleaning....but like many of Trump's other nominees, I have to think there are others with the same level of passion WITHOUT the baggage.

Note, when I transferred to Hawaii for my first 'shore' rotation.... the billet I went to as an Electronics Tech, was considered a 'shore' rotation for Men, but a 'Sea' billet for Women.

I remain a Hegseth skeptic only because of my personal judgment, not the man. It’s a complex job with a lot of pitfalls. The Pentagon is a viper pit and there’s a whole ring of people who are going to be motivated to save their jobs. That’s before we get to acquisition pipelines, deployments, training, recruiting and mission execution. Heck, nobody can even pass an audit. Hey have no idea where the money goes. That’s going to take someone seasoned, who knows where the bodies are buried and has an iron will to turn over tables and kick ass. Not sure if that’s Pete IMVHO. But that said O think he has cleaned up his life, albeit after a journey that was reckless but perhaps necessary to get to where he is now.

Rotations of troops do occur with R&R for tip of the spear folks but that doesn't mean you get a new 'job' in the military to REMF status which is what I believe the OP was discussing. There are a variety of schools like NCO academies, additional training schools, etc. that also provides a break.

Changing specialties in the Army is very difficult for enlisted and somewhat difficult for Army officers, it can be in the AF if you are not a pilot. Dunno about Navy or Marines.

These are more like state visits than one on one. Nominees for major offices usually have a Senate (or former senator) as Sherpa, to prevent damage to the nominee and smooth passage. A lot of the dickishness you see on camera is not necessarily how things go in private just like the GOP has its designated people that spout off shit in public but act very differently in private. Dems are the same in that respect and it is a core value of the uniparty to do so.

The circus is for the activists/tv media, and dumbass donors as you either have the votes to confirm going forward or you don't and the usual don't have the votes means a pulled nomination like Gaetz.

Bork did not have the votes going into his hearings and was pretty much allowed to choose whether or not to continue. He chose to use his nomination hearings to explain his theories and defend his actions firing the special prosecutor in Watergate.

Some senators whine because there is often requirements for a nominee to 'meet' with problematic senators such as no private meeting with someone likely to smear you. All those meetings are arranged with people you trust in the room by your Sherpa guide.

The Sherpa guide is there to make sure that that senators with an axe to grind do not get any straw from the nominee for the bricks they plan to throw at you in the hearings and on TV.
