Tuesday Overnight Open Thread - [scampydog]

Good evening, Horde. How are your resolutions holding up?

A bit of bourbon, some squinting, and some ONT vagary.

*****

Which one of you did this?

Teach your cat about the struggle of the proletariat and the oppression of the bourgeoisie with this handy 4ft piece of custom architecture!

Trump appointments observations. While Gaetz grabbed the headlines, it's not historically uncommon. Trump became the sixth consecutive President to have at least one cabinet nominee withdraw before confirmation. Obama had three nominees withdraw, and Clinton had the Zoe Baird fiasco, in which Baird withdrew amid controversy over her employment of illegals and failure to report their wages on her taxes. George H.W. Bush had the most recent rejection, John Tower.

Beyond the cabinet, the Trump administration could fill approximately 4,000 positions, with more than 1,200 requiring Senate approval. These roles include ambassadors, cabinet secretaries, assistant secretaries, and deputy secretaries. These positions are not entry level wages. The Assistant Secretary of Agriculture for Civil Rights is GS-15 which ranges from $125k - $163k, along with full federal employee benefits. Oh, and no drug test required. Plum Book - lists positions in the US Government that are by appointment. Paging DOGE.

To the Moon: Trump’s Record-setting Pace of Personnel Announcements

Even with the challenges of the Gaetz nomination, Trump announced his leadership choices for each of the 15 Cabinet-level agencies in record time. He announced his final Cabinet secretary selection—Brooke Rollins for secretary of the Department of Agriculture—on Nov. 23, just 18 days after the election. That’s about five times faster than the average of the last four presidential transitions.

The ONT section of random and not particularly useful. This is why full payment in advance is required.

St. Uhro

The legend of St. Urho says he chased the grasshoppers out of ancient Finland, thus saving the grape crop and the jobs of Finnish vineyard workers. He did this by uttering the phrase: "Heinäsirkka, heinäsirkka, mene täältä hiiteen" (roughly translated: "Grasshopper, grasshopper, go to Hell!")

White Knuckle Fever Drives in the United States. What stretches of road does the Horde straighten up in their seat, hands at 10 and 2, cinch up the seatbelt, turn down the radio, and tell the passenger to zip it? Road to Hana? Going-to-the-Sun? Hells Canyon? Rattlesnake Grade?

Roadside Wallace.JPG

Wallace, ID, where in 1986 you could get a Henry Weinhard's beer and no questions asked at a youthful age. The more adult things were left to the college students and working men. Or women, as it was.

Twenty bucks. Same as in town.

That's right. While Nancy Reagan was telling America "Just say no," the ladies of the Oasis were saying "Yes" to any man in Wallace with twenty bucks.

Auctioneers explaining their craft. Always interesting people and a historical item or two at auctions. Also, there are typically a section of mom chairs, which is payback for the dad chairs found at a mall.

*****

The David n David purists contend that this song said what it took the Eagles two albums to say. Bonus: He is not listening to Lou Gramm, he is listening to the ground.

Tonight’s ONT brought to you refusing to grow up. This artist claims he was kicked out of the Scouts as a 10-year-old for making out with a girl. He took his shot. Do not stand in the shadows.

98 Meanwhile, in Ukraine:
1. Trump's Special Envoy to Ukraine was scheduled to visit today, but he suddenly rescheduled for after the inauguration. Perhaps somebody remembered Trump isn't officially President yet.
2. Supposedly, Zelensky had ordered an offensive in the Kursk salient, to demonstrate to the envoy that the Ukrainians can still fight and win. The Russians brutally crushed it.
3. Ukraine cut off the flow of Russian natural gas through the country effective January 1st. This deprives the Russians of serious revenue. It also creates an energy crisis for the countries to the west of Ukraine. This may not work out in Ukraine's favor.

152 TRex with the wind/wind forecast, this thing (including any new blazes beyond Palisades and Altadena) could get historically ugly.

The 2007 fires in San Diego County would have probably become the largest insurance casualty event in US history if the weather hadn't changed when it did. Day 3, as I recall, the wind died, early on. If it had continued through that day, the fire near the border could have well burned to the water, essentially wiping out whole areas such as Eastlake and Chula Vista. Many many thousands of structures destroyed.

Conditions now are potentially catastrophic. Brush moisture content, humidity, and wind. Friends and I were talking from mid-December about how holiday season wildfires seemed likely. No rain here since ..... March?

There were a lot of real tough looking people in there, and they kept giving us the side eye, so we didn’t stay long. (Cont’d)

||President and CEO of the Getty Trust said that some "trees and vegetation on site" of the Getty Villa Museum have burned from the wide-spreading Pacific Palisades fire Tuesday.

Katherine E. Fleming added that the staff and art collection at The Villa "remain safe."

"Additional fire prevention measures in place at the Villa include water storage on-site," Fleming said in a statement Tuesday. "Irrigation was immediately deployed throughout the grounds Tuesday morning. Museum galleries and library archives were sealed off from smoke by state-of-the-art air handling systems. The double-walled construction of the galleries also provides significant protection for the collections."||

I think the worm turned for Barry when he scolded black men about not voting for black Kammie. A lot of black men were pissed about that, his condescension.

I also think, thanks to Biden, black people had a chance to really look at Trump, ignoring the media bias. Many realized they'd been played by Hope & Spare Change, that Obama didn't do squat for black people. Then blacks found out Trump did a whole lot more than Barry ever did. Trump's 'I'm asking for your vote. What have you got to lose?' also resonated as blacks looked around at 60 plus years of Dem rule in cities and saw their lives were no better.

Barry was never a 'black' man, he was half-black but raised white. So his handlers immersed him in black culture in Chicago to 'blacken' him, to give him street cred. Barry is no different than Kammie, a fake black, it's just that Barry could actually read a teleprompter. But they were both verbally incoherent, never being able to speak off the cuff.

208 I think a big reason people die so much on 285 isn't it's own geography, but surrounding geography.

The stretch between Denver and Conifer is very steep and windy. It's very challenging. Then you have the vicious climb out of Conifer to Crow Hill and Shawnee. All of that is dangerous.

But from Bailey, CO to Canada, it's basically straight, flat, and forgiving. Same from Littleton, CO to Mexico.

So the people who drive it go barreling through the high desert at top speed. If you're coming from the North, you can suddenly lose it and smash into a cliff face. If you're coming from the South, you can suddenly lose it and plunge into a ravine.

Her thought is "A history of what? Drunken knife fights of the Upper Midwest?"

When I drove through this spring, a nice Brit couple with two little kids in tow had managed to get one of those gargantuan 40 foot motor homes stuck. A rental. Dear old dad had an entrenching tool he borrowed from a jeep guy. He wasn’t a happy camper. I mentioned to the wife “Well the kids will never forget this, what a great adventure!” She said “Well first we have to make it out alive before we can reminisce”.

I could kick myself - because I wanted to offer her “a spot of Tea, right as rain you know!” In my best Limey accent. I did helpfully point out that the going rate for a tow truck to Elephant Hill in the Needles was about $500, “but that was 30 years ago”. She was not happy to hear that. LOL

Yes, all those US roads are pretty scary. But now add bomb craters as you're driving the single lane road on the top of a very narrow ridgeline. The numbered phones all have the same software and when it's updated they all get the same update as long as that number (number relates to the year it came out) is supported. Updates aren't perfect but they are a breeze (not an issue at all) compared to the other.

Amazon is an authorized seller. When you shop part of the information will be how long your phone will be supported.
One thing I really like is tech support which comes with any Apple purchase. Call them on the phone and with relative ease you will be talking to a human. It's easy enough that if I can't understand the help or if he or she is a snot I hang up and call again. That's how easy to get in touch with help. And it's as long as you own the phone.

My phone is an 11. My 8, which I also bought at Amazon worked fine until I smacked it with a shovel.

I was just reading about the mechanism for the Santa Ana winds. You get a high pressure air mass over the Great Basin to the east, such as due to an arctic air mass.

Now, low pressure off the coast. You get anti-cyclonic (clockwise) circulation around the high which funnels winds through the mountains. Air mass in said winds gets compressed at it descends, heating up and lowering RH.

Result is high speed, hot, dry air blowing through like a mo-fo.

The fire in that area was probably miles away initially. You have no idea how quickly these winds spread the fire. I had friends who were told they had 2 hours to evacuate, and 15 minutes later the house 3 doors down was on fire. They barely got their children and pets out to the car. Lost everything.

The one thing I am more afraid of than anything is fire. Once a little bit out of control, it's over. I've been around controlled burns, with lots of people with shovels around the edges. Still scary.

One time worked on the 6th fl. of a 43 fl building. Being the new guy, I was the 'fire marshall' for my floor. One time the alarms went off. Everybody started to gather at the fire panel on my floor. I used the phone to try to connect with downstairs but could not. So I said to everyone, 'I can't contact anyone. I'm leaving. You can stay or follow me down the stairs.' Later, my supervisor said I did the right thing.

I'm not fucking around with fire.

455 Hey Horde - greetings from Singapore. The countdown to the Trumpocalypse continues. I see we are annexing Greenland and taking back control of the Panama Canal. Tbh, of these two, I think Trump may be serious about the Panama Canal. Having the canal be controlled by China through Chinese "contractors" (i.e. the PRCC military industrial complex) is a straight up threat to our security and a violation of the handover treaty (or more accurately would allow us to exercise military control over the canal to ensure it remains neutral/accessible). However, I think I do subscribe to the theory that these are mostly "stray voltage" ideas floated as distractions to efforts at installing Trump's appointees.

On roads, I-70 from Denver westward is usually benign, but I spent a real white knuckle evening heading up to Breck from Denver. A snow squall/temporary blizzard hit us right before getting to the Eisenhower tunnel. The kids and wife slept unawares through most of it, thank the Lord. If he decides to opt for a larger role in government after this, the tales of rape that will emerge from his days at Harvard and Princeton will make Donald Trump look like a piker. On the plus side, had an enjoyable drive from Summerville down to Beaufort to do the quarterly PSA blood draw down there.

About an hour and 45 minutes going the back roads and Highway 17 till you split off and go into Beaufort itself.

Lovely little town with the Marine Corp Air Station on the edge of it.
And taking Mrs Via's Miata on that drive is always enjoyable.

They did the whole screening panel with cholesterol and other tuff to require five vials of blood. Now we get to see if the daily diet change and walks continue to contribute to overall improvements.

It's not really Trudeau's fault, the real blame can be laid at the feet of the family member or trusted family friend that molested him as a child.
