Some idiot bought a box of 5,000K LED bulbs instead of the normal... human... physiologically tolerable 3,000K LED bulbs.

They call them "Daylight" bulbs, but I have never seen daylight like that! It is a horror. What are they for? Proctological exams? Torture?

26 FWIW, a couple of years before I retired "they" changed the lights in my office to daylight instead of traditional fluorescents. Faced with that choice, the daylights were a vast improvement.

But if the alternative is a softer or warmer light, I'd prefer that.

29 My fwp is I can't seem to fix my 20 yo drop-in oven. Element fried, so I bought a replacement and put it in. Have done it before no problem. Didn't work. Everything but the oven works, main panel shows oven on and pre-heating, but nothing.
So I bought a replacement temperature probe, pulled the unit out so I could get in the back panel (friend muscle needed here, not often available), and replaced the temp probe. Also checked the new element connection from the back, one clip a bit loose, so squeezed tighter with pliars. Closed it up, turned on power, still nothing.
Any suggestions. Schematic, which I can't really read, indicates a circuit breaker, but nothing I can see. May be saying temp probe acts as circuit breaker, but I just replaced.
Any suggestions, other than move and start over.

The ones overseeing the project have been switching them all to daylight. Offices and conference rooms have dimmers, but if you are in cubicle hell - too bad.

When I worked in radar at a US Army test range we had red aircraft warning lights on our various towers and buildings. Bulbs burned out pretty quick so we used DRMO to get more. Once we tried to get several cases. Turned out someone coded wrong when the bulbs were put in the system.

We recieved a tractor trailer full of pallets of red bulbs. Our supply gals were not amused.

Which is precisely the problem. All the idiots in my neighborhood have 100w to 150w equivalent 5000K LEDs on their houses. The neighborhood looks like a damn prison yard. That goes triple for the jackass across the street from me who's insane lights I can see three blocks away and that are so bright they light up the interior of my house when I shut my lights off. I literally can read a book by them. Will he change them? Nah, He's guarding his steel garage door, the one without windows, from being broken into by bad guys. Daylight LEad bulbs should be banned.

You can't use the mask without the machine - and it isn't like most people would want to use it. It doesn't make a good Halloween mask.

You joke, but I'm pretty sure all of DC would be shut tomorrow. They already called DC schools, and they really try to never do that. Normally, the schools will be in session even if Fed Gov closes.

Calling for snow...then an ice layer...then a pause...then more snow. They may or may not open Tuesday b/c weather doesn't stop til 1am Tuesday...

This is if the weather casters have it right. They missed that Friday would have some road sticking...so they may be going high so they don't miss b/c they never tend to be right here (but they always have reasons for why).

Of course, this could be 2 inches or 20 inches...equally wrong, but to either end. No one ever knows which way...

The new state "mandatory" rabies shot (turns out not all that mandatory for dogs his age) made him blind, deaf, and took most of his sense of smell. His health deteriorated from there. Ol Joe is now chasing squirrels to his hearts content.

Local unwritten rules in my neighborhood include no one turns any lights on outside after dark unless someone is having a party or guests after dark. It's great because we are in a designated 'dark sky' area of the country. There are wonderful night sky events you can see most clear nights. Once or twice I have even seen the Milky Way here.

163 The Sun is at about 5000K (Kelvin). The yellowish hued bulb at 2700K is close to the "soft white" incandescent light bulb. It all depends on your application. I use some of the Daylight LED bulbs in a ceiling fan that is about 14 feet above the floor in a family room.

The ceiling fan also has a heavily frosted lamp shade. This light fixture was designed with the small candelabra-base and can only use 40W-max incandescent bulbs. It looks great, but as-designed, you can't see $h!t.

Of course, that was a decision made by a prior owner when this house was built in 1996. I should probably tear-down and rebuild the house to match the ceiling fan.

More fun with rain -> snap freeze -> several inches of fluffy snow.

Had conditions like that one winter.
No matter how slowly you would approach an intersection or lightly you'd touch the brakes, hit that black ice under the snow and your car would glide through the intersection and hopefully hit a snow back on the far side.
I say hit a snow bank because that would give you something to plant your feet on and push the car out. And sometimes point it in the direction you want to go.

It also causes the sleet/freezing rain to stick, very efficiently, to powerlines and tree limbs. A quarter inch is more than enough to take the lines down and enough to bring down tree limbs.

At a half inch of ice, it's basically catastrophic for the area affected.

Years ago we had about a quarter to a third of an inch of ice and when the power went down, it was down for over 3 days. Some areas were down for weeks.

It's not going to get above freezing here for a week or more. Shit's gonna' get real tonight.

They're so far up the spectrum that they're practically ultraviolet.
The blue "disability parking space" paint glows like it's at a rave.

I worked a contract at my company that required me to physically be in a classified lab in a Boeing facility. They had these nasty flourescent bulbs from the 70s (Joe Versus The Volcano bad) that gave me migranes. I begged them to change the bulbs. They refused. I took the bulbs over my cube out. They put them back in. I put a picnic canopy over my cube, they took it down.

I put in an OSHA complaint, and a hostile workplace complaint to my own HR along with a doctor's letter certifying the source of my migrane and how to mitigate it.

Boeing changed the damn lights.

238 I'm going to take this opportunity to shill for yellow headlights - the only good automotive idea the French have ever had.

They don't appear any brighter than white headlight bulbs, but they allow you to see farther, don't tire your eyes out as much on long night drives, lessen reflective glare or road signs, and partially mitigate the blinding effect of other drivers' poorly aimed blue-white LED headlights.

I couldn't swear to it, but I think they might also be easier on deers' eyes, so that they aren't as likely to be stunned into being a road hazard.

No, you are correct.

I with that the National Highway Safety Board would do some studies about the effect of vehicle headlights on things that aren't in the vehicle. Like oncoming cars.

It seems like all their efforts are concentrated on "making cars safer for the car's occupants" with no consideration of whether those safety measures make everything outside the car more dangerous.

261 The worst application of LEDs is automotive headlights. They blind the fuck out of you at night. It's like catching high beams right in the eye but brighter. If TPTB were serious about traffic safety they'd ban this use.

Auto headlight LEDs are between 5500 and 6500k. HIDs are
5k, but they are now significantly more expensive than LEDs, so they're irrelevant.
No one is going back halogens, for economic, regulatory, and stylistic reasons.
Require LED headlights to be 4500k +/- 100.

266 In the last century, the college I attended had Soft White fluorescent bulbs in the classrooms. Didn't know why I always felt sleepy in class. One day while converting a Fortran program to punch cards, I saw the inner sanctum that contained the IBM colossus. The lighting drew me to the glass door, where I gazed into the inner sanctum. I felt awake when I looked into that room. I asked the lab assistant what kind of fluorescent bulbs they used in there. She said they were Daylight bulbs. Since then, I have used Daylight (5000K) bulbs where possible, inside and out. I even use 6500K LED strips in closets so I can see the colors. I love them. So does my wife.
