Hi! A last Christmas photo before the tree came off its pedestal (due to puppy destruction possibilities): In the foreground, Edison, our 14-year-old Shih-Pom rescued from a shelter when he was 20 months old, and on top Tucker, our 1-year-old Morkiepoo who was rescued from a puppy mill when he was 14 weeks old. Tucker has given Edison new life and Edison has given Tucker an older dog to trust. It’s a beautiful bond. Debra in Naples, FLLove that photo of those two charming friends together. They are so lucky to have each other and you! If you would like to send pet and/or animal stories, links, etc. for the Ace of Spades Pet Thread, the address is:Until next Saturday, have a great week! I came in from shoveling snow yesterday to find Jasmine and Penny curled up in my office chair.
The numbers were on their side, so I used my backup folding chair for a while. It's not as comfy, but I didn't want to disturb the two kitties. Penny is nearly twice as big as Jasmine. Right now, Penny is curled up on my desk, Jasmine just moved to the cat tree in front of my desk, and Allie is snoozing on my futon. Hello, Horde! The TiFW cats were very happy to stay indoors the past couple of days, due to cold weather and what passes for snow in our part of Texas. The sun is out today and temps are warm enough that the indoor/outdoor cat wanted to go back outdoors.
They both belonged to our late daughter and the one who likes to go outside reminds me so much of Michelle with her love of nature. The other one was half feral but has decided over the years that it is quite nice belonging to hoomans - you don't have to scrounge for food, you don't have to defend your territory, and there is always a warm lap or soft bed to take a nap on 😊❤️ Posted by: Teresa in Fort Worth, Texas - Ace of Spades Ladies Brigade, plucky comic relief at January 11, 2025 03:51 PM (SRRAx) 17

Yay pet thread!
We had enough snow to blanket everything. Daisy the energetic Malinois seems to enjoy it. She insists on playing her daily game of fetch, but the tennis balls she brings back and drops end up as snowballs. A couple have got lost in the snow. They'll show up when it thaws. Or when we mow again. Ugh. Before I could hit post, the old black cat came into the room and proceeded to hackhackhack. Nothing came up but a little bit of spit. Thank goodness. I am in awe of people who can make art with watercolor - whenever I tried it in art class, I always ended up with a wet brown mess on my paper. I realized long ago that my talents lay elsewhere, and I am perfectly okay with that. Our daughters inherited artistic talent from Mr. TiFW's side of the family, and they are/were all quite good at it. Even Rebecca draws better stick figures than I can 🙄🙄🙄

KT,
Thanks for the gardening and pet threads. The petmorons are always a delight and Tucker and Edison make my heart melt. That video of the watercolor painter both fascinates and annoys me. Fascinates because it shows what can be done with a few simple brush strokes. (Think of the Shepard illustrations for the original Winnie-the Pooh.) Annoying because they can see patterns for the brush work that I can't. Posted by: JTB at January 11, 2025 04:39 PM (yTvNw) 40
Afternoon, pet folken,
Good afternoon. What is the funniest habit your cat has ? Posted by: Ben Had at January 11, 2025 To date, Stirling the big black cat has produced two cute but annoying tricks. Twice he has managed to push the button on my window A/C to turn it on (and that is a neat trick, as it is not an actual button that protrudes, but a flush spot on the panel marked "On"). And then, last night in zipping around, he leaped atop the small bookcase I keep by the door, stretched up, and flicked off the light switch there, plunging my couch lamps, and me, into darkness. As yet he has not figured out how to turn on the water tap in the bathroom sink, though he's watched me do it hundreds of times. If he doesn’t know the names of an actual breed mix, he makes the name up. “is that a sheedoodle?” Maybe that’s an actual name - a mix of a sheepdog and a poodle. Anyway, it’s a great gift-to be easily amused by things.

Ben Had, a stray cat turned up at my parents farm years ago. A little standoffish but would hang around and watch what was going on.
The house was very old and didn't have AC so my folks slept with the windows open including the one over the bed. One night the cat got up on the roof of the screen porch that was under their bedroom window, climbed through and curled up on my father's chest as he was sleeping. This turned into a nightly event. My father named the cat PITA, Pain In The Ass. But he secretly liked the cat. Posted by: JackStraw at January 11, 2025 04:50 PM (LkLld) 48
The same kitten that did the bucket trick also liked to ride in the truck. She would get in and stretch out on the dashboard. I would let her go on trips to the bank and they kept treats for her.

My cat’s funny habit.: he comes in the door from the outside he’s been in many times before and he”a really cautious and will jump straight up in the air about a foot and take off. I have no idea what causes this. Also he will beg to go out- this morning for instance. It was about 24 degrees and there was a bit of snow on the ground . He must have out there for about ten seconds.

Other cats I've known and their habits: Big red Arizona as a kitten captured the then-Mrs. Wolfus No. 2's little stuffed Pegasus, would play roughly with it and carry it around in his mouth as if it were a prey rat. Years later, when it was just him and me, I'd hear some soft squeaking from the living room at night and would creep out -- to find the now "adult" and "settled" big cat playing with his stuffed toy. He'd look at me with a "busted!" expression and trot away from the toy . . . only to do it again a week or so later.
(I still have Pegasus atop my bookcase. He needs wiping down with Woolite or something; he's over sixty years old and is grey rather than white.) Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at January 11, 2025 04:55 PM (omVj0) 54
My (wifes) cat will not tread on the spot his sister passed away on. He'll walk up look at it and jump over it into the next room. He really hasn't been the same since her passing.

We had a boxer pibble cross that my mom named Ole after Ole and Lena jokes. I would sometimes step outside and the fine Ole and the indoor/outdoor cat curled up together and Ole always had a 'busted curling up with a cat' look on his face when he knew I'd spotted them.

My boyhood cat, Rusty, was different with each of his humans; he'd sit with me, play rough (but never too rough) with my brother, sit on my mother's lap (and bring her mice he'd killed, leaving them on her chair at the dinner table), and sucked up beautifully to my father. That was a trick I, with my supposedly higher IQ, never learned. But Rusty would hide when anyone older than I was would come over. And he adjusted that as I grew up; he didn't stay stuck at my age twelve, but shifted with the years.
Then I brought Li'l Bit home. At first there was hissing and so forth. Then Rusty realized this was a girl and a kitten, and they became friends . . . and they swapped "jobs," so that *she* would vanish when strangers came, and *he* would sit out and be brave. When he passed away about three years later, my mother said Li'l Bit spent the day trotting around the apartment and patio, apparently calling for her vanished buddy. It must have been that, because she only did it for the one day. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at January 11, 2025 05:01 PM (omVj0) 57
Mr Trouble is so happy to get to sleep inside when it's cold. He just acts grateful. I block him off in the living room, since Fanny sleeps in the bedrooms. The other morning, he managed to come in and lay down by the bedroom. I knew this because my dog was up by my head on the bef and Fanny was on my side. I managed to get them all sorted out. Hank does not seem interested in the house although he does like to be petted a bit.

Posted by: Ben Had at January 11, 2025 05:01 PM (0wWvl) 59
Depends on the trip, Ben Had. There's a woman here on the island that does dog walking and will take dogs for overnight stays so if it's a short trip he stays with her. For longer trips he stays with my ex and gets spoiled even more than I spoil him.

The little dilute calico I mentioned in 56 had a trick. On Mardi Gras Day in '74, the bar that shared our apartment's back wall had a fire. It was quickly put out, but the firemen got Mom out on the street, and for some reason chopped a couple of floorboards out of the bedroom floor -- which, with cross beams, was our living room and kitchen ceiling. The landlord never got around to fixing it.
Li'l Bit discovered it made a fine short cut from upstairs to the kitchen. Every day she'd drop through the opening, land next to a lightbulb on one of the built-in kitchen shelves just below, and jump down to the kitchen counter and thence to the floor. Cute cat habits. Not a habit, just a story. I was taking a Thanksgiving-through-Christmas vacation in my hometown, so I had to take my cat with me because it was too long to leave him alone or rely on a cat-sitter. So I had him at my mom's for all that time, and when it was time for me to leave with him, she OBJECTED. "He has a routine here, he's happy, he doesn't like to travel," she said very firmly. So she gained a cat. Similar story happened with Karl Lagerfeld (Chanel designer for the fashion-challenged). Someone dumped their cat on him on their way to the airport for a trip of several weeks. He'd never had a cat before and said WHAT IS THIS I can't do this! When the friend came back a few weeks later and said "I'll take the cat now," Lagerfeld said "Oh no you won't." He had designed various accessories for the cat including a silk bed, renamed it, and generally become a cat person. The friend never got the cat back. For years the late Chekov D. Siberian would not sit on my lap. Then somehow Linda found that he would sit on a lap if a cushion were placed on it. So our routine became, he'd come over and give me The Look, and I'd put my sofa cushion on my lap. He'd leap up and settle down for petting.
(He also would nip my fingers or hand without warning if I didn't stay alert. Yes, as Linda says, "he never broke the skin," but it was startling and annoying. He must have nipped me once a month for twelve years. You can do the arithmetic.) Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at January 11, 2025 05:13 PM (omVj0) 69

The late Tatiana Romanova, a Siberian like Chekov and Dagny, not only used to sit under my reading lamp, but would "worship" it -- she'd clasp her front paws around it and hug it, as if basking in the warmth. She'd also sprawl atop the stove -- well after I stopped using it of an evening; she never risked being burned -- as if she were cold, even in summer. She never was robustly healthy, I discovered later. Maybe she really did have poor circulation. I didn't know; she played hard and worked out like an athlete in training for the Olympics.

Miss Linda is coming over soon, and we're going to walk over to the Chik-Fil-A in the shopping center behind where we live. I'd thought before we went there the first time that, given the neighborhood, it would be a dump. But no; it was as clean and seemed as well-run as any one I've visited.
Vastly more important, from the feline thugs' point of view, is that it's dinnertime. I've been giving Stirling a probiotic powder mixed into his canned food. Dunno if it's having any effect, but he gobbles it as he usually does with any food. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at January 11, 2025 05:35 PM (omVj0) 80
