Love how he looks right at the person and does it anyways. Sharon(willow's apprentice)
Longtime lurker here but thought I’d share a pic of my grinning Goldendoodle Bailey. Of all the dogs I’ve owned over the years, he’s the only one that smiles when he’s happy and excited.Bailey is our star today! What a great smile for the New Year! Encountered by Members of The Horde Local cat on his morning rounds giving me the once over. Sam, found in the next town over from his home. When we moved, Dewey ran into the downstairs bathroom in the new house, hid behind the toilet, and howled for two hours straight. Dipset (God Rest Her Furry Soul) took all of two minutes to find two loose slats in the living room air vent and was off exploring the HVAC system. Afternoon, pet folken,
I have my old "adjacent" animal story to report. Seems there is a white mixed-breed dog in the city called Scritch. HIs epic story began a couple of years ago, when he was rescued from the street. He promptly escaped and roamed the neighborhood and beyond. Captured again, he escaped, was re-rescued, and then fled again -- from a second-story window belonging to the lady who runs a local shelter and adoption center. He was and is not a feral, understand; he merely does not seem to prefer the human home, and would rather scamper around the city. In some ways he's more like a cat than he is a dog. He's become something of a local hero. People in his original neighborhood put out food and water for him. Lately he's been reported in a section of town miles away from the first area. Maybe he hitched a ride on a truck going that way? I haven't seen him myself, so it really isn't an "adjacent" story. He's on his way to becoming a legend kids will tell each other in future years. "They say, when the moon is bright and kids really need him, Scritch will appear. . . ." Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at January 04, 2025 03:49 PM (omVj0) 24
Well, thank you nurse. Appreciate that.
I've just woken up after a very long nap, with Astrid on one side and Squeak on the other. Amazed as Squeak, a tiny cat, is very aggressive and barely tolerates Bailey only because he's here so often that she HAS to share a lap. Astrid, after several years of avoiding me, is now very attached. We finally got the outside cat Mr Grey to come inside. He's probably the daddy to the Cheese family: Brie and her 6 kittens. Read and see pictures at Update 291 after this. Posted by: Ciampino - The world is made for cats even the Internet at January 04, 2025 03:52 PM (i0xsb) 25

As for my furry thugs: I didn't feel great this morning after my errands, so I lay down for a bit. Big black Stirling leaped up to bump his head against mine and purr, almost as if he knew something was off, and then slept with me during my nap.
Little gray Dagny La Siberienne (who loves belly rubs, by the way) didn't. Nurse and Perfessor's tales of their cats becoming lap warmers after *years* or residence gives me hope that she may do the same. Someday. Currently have 4 chickens. Fifth one passed on last month. The first 2 winters in MT with them was manageable, this year it’s been lots of rain and warm temps. Let me tell you that fine wet soil mixed with chicken poop isn’t fun. Adding insult to smelly conditions is only 2 of them lay eggs. And yes they have heat and extra light. This will be the last of them, once they die off I’m done. I estimate each egg is costing me what a carton of commercial eggs runs. I know others make it work, I guess I’m not a chicken whisperer.

Two years ago, I acquired a "Christmas kitty" in the form of Hexie, who showed up out of the cold on Christmas Eve.
This year, I nearly had a heart attack when I heard Penny freaking out near my office window on Christmas night. When I peeked outside, I saw a kitty peering back at her. I had to shoo it away because I already have a Christmas kitty. Posted by: "Perfessor" Squirrel at January 04, 2025 04:00 PM (BpYfr) 39
With wind chill temps approaching single digits it's time for Precious to put on her sweater. And she agrees. Once the sweater is on she parades around like a queen on a red carpet. Of course, after this display she must have her beauty sleep and curls up in the cuddler.
All our pups have liked wearing sweaters. Their reactions make me think of little girls wearing mom's clothes as dress up. Posted by: JTB at January 04, 2025 04:01 PM (yTvNw) 40

I was positive he would not take to riding for three days in a carrier in a noisy Ryder truck, so I left him with Miss Linda to ship up to me later. On the other hand, her super-smart cat Marie-Antoinette, who never minded carriers or car rides, was a great and un-panicky companion on the three days back in my car in '01. You never know. When I retire and move at last, I suspect my current two, who walk right into their carriers, will handle the two-day trip fairly well. The plan with Mr Grey is to wait until he's acclimatized to being inside and the cold outside possibly ameliorates, then at a time we have vet funds we can have him neutered - if we can get him in a carrier!
After that, depending how he gets on with the others, we would like to keep him in so he doesn't end up getting run over crossing the street. Our oldest male (13), Oscar the Grouch, objected to Mr Grey at first for a few hours and then gave up it seems. There's hope. Funny how every cat in the house knew there was a new cat in the study in spite of there being no sounds at first. Smell I guess. I meant to add that there are no longer any fertile females in the house, all fixed. We have two young boys from Brie's litter still to do. I wish we had a shelter that would neuter cats for a reduced fee. In Africa getting a cat from the Pound required it be neutered first and would cost us the princely sum of $10 (R10 at the time).
Mind you a complete X-ray set for a person was about $20 at the hospital. We pay for too many yachts and fast cars. Posted by: Ciampino - The world is made for cats even the Internet at January 04, 2025 04:11 PM (i0xsb) 45

All of my cats have loved the traditional scratches behind the ears or on the cheek tufts or under the chin. Scratching at the back spot just forward of the base of the tail would make both Rusty, my boyhood cat, and Arizona "chatter" as if they were seeing a bird in the yard. Both were red cats, both neutered, but otherwise nothing alike.
The rest of the cats have been indifferent to, or ordinarily pleased by, such treatment. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at January 04, 2025 04:24 PM (omVj0) 54

Tricolors I like; calicos, classic and mackerel tabbies, points, solids, tuxedos and white-and-blacks are all fine; but not tortoiseshells. He must have thought I was his mother -- who, according to lore, died when he was fairly young. At almost three years old, he still milk-treads now and then. Dagny never does. In fact, none of the Siberians I've known have done that. Possibly because they don't leave the breeder's home until they are at least five months old, so their early kittenhood behaviors are behind them. Come to think of it, the only time Arizona ever scratched me was by accident. I was on the stairs in the townhouse and he was down by the front door, when someone rang the bell. That's interesting .How did you decide to get a parrot or you've had them before?
A surprise birthday gift was a lorikeet. Then joined the now defunct West valley bird society. A member said she "stalked" me after hearing my voice on the phone. She had many parrots. I had read about Senegals and just let him out his cage. He was so lonesome for affection he was overjoyed. He's the only one now. Makes purring noise when on my shoulder. I have two Australorp hens. They are beautiful, black with a sheen of blue feathers and brilliant red combs. They produce large brown eggs and have been the healthiest of the bunch.
They are, however, very broody. Twice this year we've had to put them in uncomfortable chicken jail. Takes about 5 days to get them out of their condition. That said, because of this trait, they apparently make great mothers if you have a rooster and want chicks. Posted by: Derak at January 04, 2025 05:18 PM (Oq3mj) 85
Doubt that, but prayers up for Rose and your kindergarten buddy.
Posted by: olddog in mo at January 04, 2025 04:49 PM (hoCmQ) Doubly so. Unless, of course, you two were doing things like the two boys in last nights ONT tweets. Posted by: Hour of the Wolf at January 04, 2025 04:54 PM (VNX3d) ==== Thanks. And so much more. We planned a get together in 2 weeks, and there have already been threats of physical violence. If you keep them in the entrance hallway, it's chicken mother foyer. Posted by: Commissar of Plenty and Lysenkoism in Solidarity with festive little caps and interpretive dance. at January 04, 2025 05:21 PM (oJbIm) Posted by: "Perfessor" Squirrel at January 04, 2025 05:24 PM (BpYfr) 88
FWIW our cats... a couple of them don't mind rubs in most areas... other than... you know
down there. Bellies are more or less off limits tho'. But the resulting attacks are pretty mild, all things considered. Posted by: Martini Farmer at January 04, 2025 05:25 PM (Q4IgG) 89

Most of mine, the lap cats at least, don't mind tummy rubs and a few will roll over for one. Shadow, the 20-pounder, and Serena, Cheese family only girl kitten, do that.

We don't get snow until about 11 tonight. No rain but it's slick outside. Will be glad to get through tomorrow.

Fen - do a web search for Senegal purr. Most are short bursts. His have evolved to an extended purr/raspberry/fart combo. Laughing reinforces the behavior, and he cracks me up every time.

Yay pet thread, and I didn't miss it today. Thanks again, KT.
Daisy, our overly affectionate Malinois, has had a great couple of days. Yesterday, SonM came by with his two dogs, Jarl the monstrous Malamute, and Bandit, the, um, black and brown I forget what dog. Bandit is about the same size as Daisy, and they had a great time play-bowing, mock-fighting, and chasing back and forth through the house. Jarl plays a little, but is mostly above the fray. Literally. Today, Daughter & hub brought their two dogs by, Chowie the long-haired handsome guy, and Maya, the short mass of muscle. They raced around and bounded into each other, having a great time. When I see these dogs coming, I open the back door, because for some reason they all like to run out into the small fenced yard first thing. They also like to gather around MiladyJo until she distributes treats. Ony, the old black cat, hides in the bedroom while Daisy has guests, emerging only after the house gets quiet again. We try to tell her she should come out and play with the dogs, but she barely even tolerates Daisy. Jarl's head is practically bigger than Ony.

I started with 12 hens, 6 from chicks 3 days old., 6 from 2 month old pullets.
3 Idaho gems, 2 austrolorps, 7 Easter eggers. 1 chick turned into a rooster, bye. One gem died after a year. One Easter egger got sick, we isolated her for 9 mos, she laid and seemed okay....put her back with the brood and she promptly keeled over dead. The third one died last week, got kind of immobile and just up and died. Oh, and a fourth one nearly died of heat stroke two summers ago, but we saved her. I have no idea why these birds died. They died many many month or years apart, so unrelated causes. They were healthy and then they weren't. We isolated each one each time just in case of infectious diseases. None of the other birds ever was infected with whatever these three died of. Chickens are ironically both very resilient and very fragile. To me though , they are worth the trouble if you like eggs. As far as venturing into livestock , they are easier, and their death is easier to accept and handle. That's not to say you DON’T get attached to them. They are quirky and funWe keep asking ourselves if we could handle cows. Now that's a problem when they up and die.
