Wednesday Morning Rant

mannixape2.jpg

Downswing?

Since before Trump's reelection but especially after, there has been a question lingering in the minds of many. It goes along the lines of, "have we finally achieved Peak Woke?" I don't know, but I know that the question has been arising more often this year than in years prior. Ever since the Dylan Mulvaney debacle with AB-InBev, this was a question that it was suddenly - very suddenly - acceptable to ask. The displeasure with Wokeness has been rising, sometimes barely perceptibly, since then.

But it is very hard to tell. Wokeness in all its forms is so deeply embedded in American (and, more broadly, Western) institutions that it is by no means vanquished merely because Trump won and at least a plurality of people got publicly fed up with tranny madness. But there are indicators that are promising in terms of entertainment and associated products. This is a tricky barometer because the production lead time on such things is very long and entertainment is often slow to pivot to a new reality. The queue of crap that got a green light years ago has to drain. But there is one exception to this, a category with (relatively) quick turnaround: advertising.

I have seen a marked shift in advertising in the past few months, both on terrestrial broadcast and on streaming. It isn't sweeping yet, but it appears to be there. There are some ads I am seeing in fairly heavy rotation that would never have been made a few years ago because they're surprisingly normal. The first is for a place I've never heard of or seen in real life, which is a gas station or truck stop:

A grown man going to visit his father and bringing some (through implication) decent coffee with him. That's it. Two men who appear normal. Neither is a buffoon. They're both white. It's shockingly regressive, and I see this ad frequently. There's a similar one starring a dude and his wife that's also pretty normal. Unusual, to say the least.

Then there's one I've seen frequently on terrestrial broadcast, which is from a company known not necessarily for in-your-face wokeness in advertising, but definitely for trendiness and trend-setting: Apple. Their new wireless earbuds have a "hearing aid" feature and I've seen various iterations of this long-form ad chopped up for television:

That's a great ad, if you go for saccharine over-the-top sentimentality. But set aside whether that's your thing or not, and look at what it is: a mother and father and daughter, having Christmas together, from the father's perspective. Nobody is denigrated. Nobody is being told to check his privilege or put down for his original racial or sexual sins. It's just a dude who's grateful for his improved hearing with his family, and a family that is grateful to him. The cast look like they actually could be a family. It's astonishingly normal, and a radical break from recent trends.

Even Wal-Mart is getting in on the action in what appears to be the new trend of "normality in advertising for Christmas '24" - albeit by riding on the shoulders of other (somewhat old) entertainment properties:

Some of their other ads are less good but even they're markedly toned down from the kind of stuff we saw last year or in 2022. From cars for affluent middle-aged people to headphones for trendy young people, ads are looking increasingly old. They show the product and its features. They show people doing things. Even when diversity quotas are still clearly on display like in the ad for headphones, they aren't being too pushy about it compared to recent history - like in this monstrous ad for Marshall, on which I commented in a prior rant (don't comment on old threads).

Notable counterpoints like Jaguar aside, Wokeness appears to be waning in advertising. I don't know if this will hold up even through the season - let alone into the future - but I think it there is at least a touch of promise. I don't know whether it's because the economy is rough those and those Christmas season dollars are harder to come by so businesses genuinely must revert back to normality and cast a wider net or die, but from what I can tell, the slow movement toward something approaching normality in advertising appears to have sped up rather a lot in the past couple of months.

I just hope it's real.

10 I think Trump coming in will give a new infusion of woke. Remember, even if all he does is fix the economy, that will throw out enough surplus cash for them to get solvent again.

It is a cruel irony (but delicious) that a lot of this shit cannot survive unless times are good.

I think it is somewhat returning to normal, albeit with a higher woke baseline. We'll know if the representation of blacks and whites in ads returns to something more like the actual populations of the country, and if every couple isn't a black man with a white woman.

It's the crumb being thrown to the normies before going back to insult mode.

35 I haven't seen an ad on TV in years, especially since I stopped watching sportsball broadcasts, and I use Brave to block them on youtube. Seems like if you want an ad to be seen these days, your best bet is to make one that goes "viral" -- one that is funny enough or likable enough for people to share on social media. Maybe the agencies are learning that.

49 Trends are going positive on some advertising, yes, but woke was always just a vehicle for the left. A means, and not necessarily the end. Lefties want power, and will use anything to get it.

For example, the left keeps pushing violence, like the murderous type we just saw. But even antisemitism is becoming even more readily violent.

Witness what happened to Floyd Merriweather, the former boxing champ, on his shopping trip in London over the weekend. He was accosted on the street by a crowd of 30 or so terror supporters angry with his strong support of Israel. He wasn't hurt, but only because he uses private security wherever he goes.

There was never much sign that Caitlin was in fact an ideological warrior. Too many people projected what they wanted to see there--a straight white woman beating the WNBA woke machine and figuring she was on 'our side'.

Most people are not ideological and just want to do what they can do well and to continue to exist in a woke WNBA, you mouth whatever they want publicly so you can continue to ply your craft.

No different than the QB in New Orleans, I think, that backtracked on some BLM nonsense. In both cases, it was not only dangerous to the paycheck to be different but to their actual health in leagues with thuggery by players.

In addition, most of those people in the public spotlight have 'handlers' as in public relations folks either working for them directly as a publicist or indirectly (hiring a firm) that handle all public pronouncements.

Heroes ain't gonna save us, it is up to each one of us to reject the poisoned chalice of wokeness and stand up in order for society to change and elites to be chastened.

The child was a spoiled brat with no character development that inevitably got into bed with the ne'er do well. Even at college, she was a wooden actress that made Harrison Ford seem expressive.

Lorelei was the inevitable 'free spirit' that showed little if no growth as an alleged adult. We are supposed to side with her and her bedhopping, in favor of her awful family. Her mother was a reprehensible creep designed to show hypocrisy of the having normal values and the father was henpecked by the stronk wife but served as the financial piggybank role for stronk wife and kin.

A long litany of tropes and inversions designed to disgust someone aware of them. Don't care if Lauren is pretty scenery if the character she plays is a poor example of an adult.

145 Mulvaney wasn't the underlying problem in the Bud Light fiasco. Nobody gives a shit about some goofy internet weirdo. If he-she-it was the spokesthing for White Claw nobody would have batted an eye.

But the mutants in marketing said, "hey, normal Americans who drink normal beer, we hate you. We really really hate you. And now we're going to take this thing from you that you're mildly addicted to and that you consume to forget the drudgery of your life.... we're going to take it from you because we hate you, and we want you to know that we hate you"

Make aforementioned goofy internet thing the totem for your little hategasm, and goofy internet thing is gonna be the lightning rod for the hate you get in return.

I mean, they obviously had help from government, business, academia, etc. But, seriously, it's such a niche group to have that much power.

The entire alphabet society needs to be disappeared, for good.

They are reason. Their home was searched as part of a criminal investigation for an August vandalism that exceeded $1K that was touted by their hate group. Rather than sit on that, GMU got campus and local police involved, identified the 2 ring leaders (the sisters), have them in "contempt" of the campus with 4 years of prohibition of entry, and suspended their hate group indefinitely. And now are continuing to pursue the crime.

That campus has been QUIET both times stuff tried to be started - last year, it was 2 immediate expulsions for a fight. This year, it's effectively 2 expulsions and possible now criminal charges for them (and their family) for the vandalism.

I am pleased to nominate Ronald (Ron) Johnson to serve as the United States Ambassador to Mexico. Ron will work closely with our great Secretary of State Nominee, Marco Rubio, to promote our Nation’s security and prosperity through strong America First Foreign Policies. During my First Term, Ron served as the Ambassador to El Salvador, where he worked tirelessly with Salvadoran authorities and our team to reduce violent crime and illegal migration to the lowest levels in History. He also served our Country for over twenty years with the Central Intelligence Agency after a distinguished career in the U.S. Army as a Green Beret. He graduated from the National Intelligence University with a Master of Strategic Intelligence.

Congratulations Ron. Together, we will put an end to migrant crime, stop the illegal flow of Fentanyl and other dangerous drugs into our Country and, MAKE AMERICA SAFE AGAIN!

Trump to serve as the United States Ambassador to Mexico.[4]

Johnson has a Bachelor of Science from the University of the State of New York and a Master of Science from the National Intelligence University. From 1984 to 1998, Johnson served in the U.S. Army and retired as a colonel.[3][5]

One trick of sequels is to repeat the original narrative but set it in a new location or with some new characters to replace originals. Home Alone I and II exhibit this as does the Indiana Jones original three movies.

Another is to continue a narrative arc--The Santa Klause was a success and thus 2 had to continue the development of the main tentpole character in some way. The original Star Wars trilogy is an example as well except with a trio of characters instead of one.

A lot of denial there, but it happens when governments abandon policies they've realized are folly. After the policy of folly crashes & burns, the government begins the search for excuses to explain how it really wasn't their fault, generally or specifically. Trump's plan had us staying in Kandahar to ensure the government in Kabul kept its nerve and was protected from the whims of the Taliban chieftains. The Potato's plan (Kamala helped!) was "drop everything and fly away", which of course led to panic as the Afghan government abruptly realized they had been thrown to the wolves.

307 Musa al-Gharbi argues that woke is underemployed elites (churned out of universities or other certification systems) trying to find an oppressed minority that they can adopt, and lead to the elite's own profit as their very own subject demographic. It seems to be the outgrowth of Marx' immiseration, where the normie population has to be brought to such a miserable state that they can be given the option of bettering their lives, of course being led by the firm, educated hand of their natural elites.

It ends either when the "immiserated" classes walk away, or the elites wind up eating each other. It never makes the world or society better, and in general ruins everyone's lives by locking society into a system of exploitation and repression.

That's the irony. Most of the sequels are kind of terrible. The Mummy franchise as a whole is awful.

However, there are bright spots. Son of Frankenstein is good. Son of Dracula doesn't work, but it's got a really good ending. The Abbott and Costello films are pretty universally fun, not just Frankenstein. A couple of the earlier mash up films are surprisingly decent.

But it's solidly less than half of the whole package. Irony can be pretty ironic sometimes.

T3 is a well-made and fun movie, but it destroys the entire franchise.

If you had to sum up Terminator in a phrase, it's "no fate but what we make." The future isn't set in stone and can be changed. That's why Skynet keeps sending Terminators to kill John Connor before he can be born, and why the good guys keep trying to kill Skynet before it can be born.

Then T3 came along with "Judgment Day is inevitable," which means all of the above is pointless since Skynet will always lose, and John Connor will always win.

Posted by: TheJamesMadison
======
The plenary power exists because it is impossible to be a tyrant when pardoning or commuting someone's sentence. Sort of a circuit breaker to prevent injustice in the individual case and to preserve public peace when applied broadly. Historically the founders gave the pardon power to the executive based on a history from the plenary power of monarchs to pardon/commute.

An early use was during the Whiskey Rebellion in PA and Washington's pardons followed a similar method to the British Monarchy pardons for the various rebellions and riots in that country.

For the most part, pardons either focus specifically on one individual and can include all potential uncharged conduct (see Nixon's pardon by Gerald Ford) or when applied to a group, it has a common denominator of charges and the situation in which it occurred such as the Vietnam draft evasions.

Whether it is unlimited in fact would probably never make Scotus because of standing, political question doctrine, and separation of powers doctrine.

Counter:

T2 destroyed the mythos of T1. The closed circle of the dramatic arc undermined the message of "no fate but what we make" because despite everything, Sarah ended up exactly where she was always going to be. It was more about investing Sarah with fight, not saying that Judgment Day could be avoided.

T3 brings the franchise back to where T1 was before T2 broke it.

I like the movie, but it isn't as good as 1 & 3. It is not as over the top as 4 & 5. It did try to be a good sequel by copying some of the beats from #1. The bad guys aren't what they seem, the immediate authorities aren't trustworthy or competent, the one reporter is an asshole, and our boy is on the clock. McClain still gets to act like a proper detective and figure out the scam, although by then there is little time to stop the bad guys except balls to the wall hero stuff.

It hasn't held up as well over the years, although as a dude who watched many Eighties & Nineties action films I'll give it a pass. Like I'm going to pretend here that I watched & enjoyed derivative films back then! But #3 is a better film because it keeps the premise, but changes things up a bit, while keeping McClain on the hero-by-accident level as he was in #1.

361 Has anybody ever traced this portrayal of fathers back to the original television character?

Because the original character is not from television, not even radio. You break right through into Life with Father, and the archetypes are in Roman satires. We did not invent this.

362 they can impeach him again, it is the one thing the Legislative branch can do against the President performing his Constitutional powers in a way the Legislature doesn't like

To do that, the House would have to do it and then the Senate convict. Doubtful. There is a reason that the British Parliament ended the practice as ineffective and the Founders themselves were divided on the issue.

The Constitutional Convention itself occurred during the famous impeachment trial of Hastings as Gov. General of India. It too ultimately failed after 7 years.

363 "293 North Koreans are being blooded and trained. The N Korean army will be the better for it. If any survive or don't defect."
***********
Maybe. But once the survivors get back to NORK and tell their comrades about what they are missing in the outside world, they may all defect to the South.

365 The best commercial I've seen recently has heavy play on Fox News and it started right after Trump said he'd impose 25% tariffs on Canada. The ad is from the Ontario government and talks about how good friends they are with the US, how important trade is between them and many US states, how they love Americans to visit. Pretty funny timing.
