Wednesday Morning Rant

mannixape2.jpg

Let's wokify
::spins wheel::
speakers

Activists always look for any opportunity to push the message and promote the cause. Marketing departments across the land - across several lands - are packed to the rafters with activists, and they never fail to create opportunities to promote their ideals. Things that have (and should have) nothing to do with politics or social movements are nonetheless shackled to them to serve as vehicles for activist ambition. From razor blades to beer to sports to underwear, wokism is ever-present.

Some of these - like Victoria's Secret - are examples of "go broke, get woke." When the business isn't in good shape, go for the wokism to make some waves. Some of them are more like Gillette or AB-InBev, where a reasonably healthy business loses its mind and goes all-in on divisive politics. The big names are big, but the same problem is literally everywhere. This ad is a few months old, but it only entered rotation on my TV set recently:

This is an ad for a bluetooth speaker made by Marshall, not that it's in any way obvious. At first, this looks like an ad for body-positivity activism (What's particularly funny is that she apparently isn't primarily a "body postivity" activist, but a "shade-inclusivity" beauty products activist.). The ad says nothing about the product. They don't tell you that it's $300. They don't tell you that it's water and dust resistant. They don't tell you that it has four speaker drivers. They don't tell you the product's name (apparently, it's "Middleton") and while they show the logo throughout, they don't bother to even say the name of the company. It leaves with you a vague impression that it's for speakers, but doesn't go out of its way to make the point.

The short-form ad (the YouTube preroll ad version) is even worse. It's just the activist woman and it truly leaves you guessing. If I didn't already know what Marshall is, I would have no clue that the ad was for a speaker. Even setting aside the distastefulness of activism-based marketing, this is a failure of an advertisement.

So-called "lifestyle" marketing is nothing new and this is actually a prime example of it. The print copy could have come from any point in the modern era:

For over 60 years, Marshall has shown that Rock 'n' roll is more than just a genre, it is a state of mind. To celebrate the launch of Middleton, we've partnered with four cultural pioneers to amplify their voices and celebrate their unique stories. Constant travelling, online noise, burnout and unwanted looks are part of their daily lives. And how they deal with it has made them who they are.

Meet Seb Murphy, Sophi St. Louis, Efron Danzig, and David Yang. Follow the story.

"Live that Rock 'n Roll lifestyle, you renegade!" Nothing new here. It's bog-standard and, bluntly, boring stuff. The commercial, though, doesn't even tie in. The ad just screams "activism," and doesn't even bother screaming it through a Marshall Stack.

15 years ago, an ad agency that pitched to executives, "let's have a frenetic visual mess that relates nothing about the product, the company or the Rock 'N Roll Rebel lifestyle, but be sure to put an activist in it at both the start and finish of the ad" would have been fired. Now, they aren't. Now, it's normal. Now you get kicked out of the room if you don't do it.

The first company to kick out the activists and reconquer the marketing department is going to get a whole lot of market differentiation for free.

Note how many "things" feature genderless blobs now instead of women or men. Been going on since probably 2016, slowly inveigling its way into culture.

Yes, entirely. It's related, I think, to the other increasing trend in advertising: vertical video. Lots of vertical video in ads now.

I call it the "TikTok Effect." TikTok video is vertical. TikTok video - when it isn't a single discrete chunk like a dance video - has frenetic editing due to the duration limitation. Advertising is reflecting TikTok production methods. Fast-paced, quick-cut, flashing text on screen, vertical orientation (often with multiple vertical panels to fill up the normal TV aspect ratio).

The kids are already used to it, and it pairs nicely with the Ludovico Technique.

84 It's just simple stupidity.
I pass a HUGE billboard every day. It is for a sizable local jewelry outlet. Apparently they want to sell you a wedding ring for your betrothed. However the chick on the billboard, instead of looking happy and joyful, has a look on her face like you just slipped a rat's asshole on her ring finger. Stupid.

90 I've been in marketing since 2006. One client I worked for was Stanley Tools. They were launching a job site music player that was supposedly very rugged and durable.

Art director and I would walk to get lunch every day, which took us past a construction site. Regular dudes, pretty gruff looking, no nonsense types.

We pitched an idea that revolved around classic album covers reimagined as construction scenes. Welp, the team we pitched it to was 7-8 girls all under the age of 25, sans the female boss.

None of them knew the albums. Was likely that none knew a construction worker.

That's who's occupying these departments. Them and their "allies."

In her words, from an interview with Vogue:

134 I will say, sound used to be richer, it seems like. I'd say that is almost entirely down to speaker quality. I am not sure the recording media has as much influence as we think it does. A nice turntable of a bach concerto will still sound tinny coming over a phone speaker as anything else.

On the other hand, an HTC One M8 I had had PHENOMENAL speaker quality for phone. It was really nice.

157 Good morning! I am guessing the marketing departments are thinking this resonates with a younger audience who will see the name and google it to identify the product. This interactive engagement, dare I use the term, sits adjacent to interacting with insta reels or stories. Does it work when it’s this nebulous? Probably. Because they will want to know what Marshall is, and maybe be surprised it’s a speaker. It makes it stick in the brain as a result. Those of us who are a bit longer in the tooth aren’t going to really be interested in the content to start so we may not google to find out more.

It does work. I get a lot out of our instagram account, both the reels or stories that are obvious snippets of a workout, as well as our funny posts, people want to find out who we are and click on our bio, to our website, and then book classes.

163 I figure woke advertising works like this.

Let's say there's a fast food place. They're doing okay, they're in 12 place, but they're not starving.

The CEO says "Let's get a marketing firm in here so we can expand." They go looking online for a firm, and find one that's won lots and lots of awards, so they hire them.

The marketing firm says "Your new spokesperson is Megan Rapanhoe! It'll be great!" The CEO is uneasy, but, all those awards must mean something...

So they go ahead with Megan Rapanhoe, and they drop from 12th place to 23rd place. The CEO resigns.

The marketing from wins and Inclusion Award, and proudly adds it to their webpage.

The cycle continues.

silly example of social media censorship

my wife asked what I thought it might have been. it's literally videos of gym equipment. I asked her "did you get the flags in the background?" We have flags hanging on the wall. Texas flag, a few others. One of them is the Gadsen Flag

240 That Marshal ad is real?? Gotta be some trolling going on. The ad features some repulsive people you can almost smell through the computer screen (and not just the fat black chick), has almost nothing to do with the product, and is done in cheap AfterEffects filters and gimmicks that might have been innovative 30 years ago. Just a truly terrible ad that will repulse 90% of viewers.

Oh and former rock band member here. Marshall makes a good product, but they were never worth the inflated prices. I found competitors to be just as good if not better, and more reasonably priced. Marshall was mostly selling based on the name alone.

242 You'll note Mannix girls are almost entirely in portrait mode. I assume most people hold their phone in portrait mode, so when they click a Mannix girl link, they get a full-sized image instead of a narrow bar of lady. Even if you hold your phone horizontally, a woman in landscape mode won't look as good. Lots of wasted space.

Now, some of MY ladies can only be fully appreciated in landscape mode, but they're VERY special cases.
Posted by: Admiral Ackbar at May 01, 2024 11:51 AM (JCZqz)

That, but also, landscape gives you a sense of place and what the subject is in relation to that. A picture from a gal is not trying to show you her bathroom or her living room, she is trying to show you her without any distractions.

253 I addition to the adoption of wokeism, ads are just plain getting more idiotic and offensive. Commercials for Old Spice keep cropping up on my Youtube viewing and they're just moronic. And they've got two "storylines" going: one features an angry black man who keeps confronting his wife about using his body wash, and the other one features two Asian couples, and all I learned from the latter is that one of the guys has horrendously stinky feet. And then there's an ad for another product (some kind of deodorant) in which a chubby young black woman, who's obviously just finished working out at the gym, says, "You know, it's not just my armpits that stink". No class at all.

If there was a block function on this blog, it would block the eyebleach links from Ackbar. Mannix or Fen are the safe ones to open.

Not classy for sure. I can tell you, though, swampy smells happen, though I wonder if this would be a wonderful blend of swampy plus flowers. 😂. I just change my leggings out if I teach more than 2 classes. In case you wondered.

306 Johnathan Pryce gives off the villain vibe but never interesting or likeable or fun. He was only ever well-cast in Baron Munchausen. Not a good Bond villain.

308 >>209 Anybody remember the godawful ads when Infiniti cars were introduced? Zen bullshit featuring streams and pussywillows.
Kneecapped the brand from the beginning.

I remember those. Even Adweek and Ad Age, who never met an ad campaign that they didn't love, were like "ummm..."

309 I still get a bizarre array of ads from YT. My faves are when they advertise to me in Spanish. Which is a complete and total waste. Yes, I know YT like a lot of Americans ACHE for America to have its own Quebec or Belgium but if I can’t understand the ad, it’s a failure. They are better off advertising to me in German.

That is a good thing--it tells you that Big Google's data file on you is corrupted--probably by spurious linkages due to key identifiers being shared with some other person.

Always, always give thought to corrupting marketing databases through putting in enough dubious information that it ends up getting propagated throughout the internet data brokers.

310 I worked at Faberge corporate offices for several months doing a renovation. Most beautiful women per square foot of anyplace I've ever been. This was around 74. Sammy Cahn the songwriter had a big office there. IIRC, Faberge produced a movie that Sammy did the music for-A Touch of Class.

311 It's nothing new; this theory of advertising goes back to Edward Bernays (a name everyone on the Right ought to know). We were turned into "consumers" (a word that would have had no meaning in centuries prior) through psychological manipulation which deconstructed our traditional identites, centered around religion, family, community, and nation, and rebuilt them around an image of the self, as expressed through things like consumption choices and brand loyalties.

Even when the images were superficially beautiful, masculine, strong and healthy it was still fundamentally a con. It's just that now, with their grip on our nations firmly established and our people thoroughly degraded and demoralized, these subversives can be more open in expressing their true vision of the new Man: an ugly, sickly, listless, weak, misshapen creature, mumbling in a drugged stupor about "freedom" while completely enslaved to his base appetites.

I'm proud my family's motto is "You snooze, you lose."

AKA, "You weren't using it."
