It's easy to argue that Walz's surprise is due at least in part to the fact that Democrats stay within their bubbles far too often. Friendly interviews, failure to associate with anyone who doesn't fall in line with left-wing values, and a blind belief that only leftists are virtuous and right make for surprise when a leftist finds out that people who disagree with him exist.
One can excuse Walz for sounding like a typical cosseted leftist for his surprise that the American electorate didn't welcome him and Harris with open arms, but the reason he thinks the ticket lost is downright laughable. You might want to sit down for this if you aren't already.

Not only does he personally believe in the importance of actual physical presence in a workplace, but he figures that many federal workers will quit rather than start working normal office hours again, thus giving him a bunch of self-firing bureaucrats.

But the federal employees union, which must be decertified by Congress, is pushing back.

The American Federation of Government Employees, which represents 800,000 federal and Washington city workers, said assertions that staffers are abusing work-from-home flexibility are serving as cover for Republican lawmakers to try to tear down the government.

"Exaggerating the number of federal employees who telework and portraying those who do as failing to show up for work is a deliberate attempt to demean the federal workforce and justify the wholesale privatization of public-sector jobs," AFGE said on its website.

At issue is a report on telework released by Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) last week, which she shared with other senators. The report is expected to bolster efforts by the so-called Department of Government Efficiency, an outside group led by tech mogul Elon Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, to have federal employees back in the office five days a week.
"For years, I have been tracking down bureaucrats relaxing in bubble baths, playing golf, getting arrested, and doing just about everything besides their job," Ernst said in a statement. "Federal employees need to return to work, but if they don't want to, I will make their wish come true."
In her report, the Iowa senator said 90 percent of federal employees telework, while only 6 percent report to the worksite full time. In addition, close to one-third of staffers work remotely.
"If you exclude security guards & maintenance personnel, the number of government workers who show up in person and do 40 hours of work a week is closer to 1%!" Musk said on social media last week, referring to Ernst's report.

A lot of people have suggested TDS, but that makes more sense. TDS in Republicans is always a function of losing one's audience/grift. National Review thought they could control the GOP nomination by doing a Very Special Issue against Trump and it failed.

This is false. Russia is advancing methodically, cautiously, on narrow fronts, creating and then clearing cauldrons.

They are inflicting heavy casualties in the process, because they have pushed Ukraine out of the fortified zones and as the ground freezes, digging in becomes harder to do. It's also easier to see fresh turned earth in the snow.

Putin is in no hurry. He has more than a month to play with and no incentive to panic.

The revisionist theory I saw postulated recently was that the persecuted under Nero weren't Christians but another sect and that later Christian writers just edited the histories because 'everyone knew' Christians were tortured. Prosecutorial immunity (and judicial immunity) is pretty strong. It's not 100% absolute, but it's pretty close. Dershowitz was going on about this yesterday on some show. It shouldn't be as strong as it is.

I think the only recent case that came close to piercing that immunity was the Mike Nifong and the Duke Lacrosse case. The NC AG actually made a statement, and this was intentional, that opened the door to piercing Nifong's immunity.

He's been disbarred and sued into bankruptcy, but I don't know if any actual malicious prosecution case was actually brought.

296 Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva underwent surgery for a brain hemorrhage related to a recent fall, the Syrian-Lebanese Hospital in Sao Paulo said Tuesday.

“The operation went without complications” on Monday night, and Lula was “doing well, under monitoring” in an intensive care unit, the hospital said in a statement posted on the president’s Instagram account.

The hemorrhage was linked to a fall Lula suffered on October 19, the hospital said. Lula had hit his head after falling in a bathroom at the presidential residence in the capital Brasilia and received several stitches.

And not all chips are created equal. What would be good in a "smart" washing machine or in your "smart" watch isn't the same kind of chip used in AI, weapons guidance systems or equipment for harsh environments.

Then there is the problem of IP....

The book on Nero is Stephen Dando Collins' The Great Fire of Rome. He wrote histories of individual legions. A blurb on Amazon mentions that the sect was an Egyptian Goddess - Isis, perhaps. I can probably pull out the book if you are interested.

I predicted Daniel Penny would be acquitted, back in February, right here at AOSHQ. I've had my doubts since, but it turned out I was right in the first place, and I'm glad of it, and glad for Penny.

If you think the not-guilty verdict means Penny is not guilty, you're correct. If you think it means he didn't break the law, then you don't understand why we have jury trials in this country. Apparently Ted Cruz thinks Daniel Penny didn't break the law. He's wrong.

Bernhard Goetz broke the law in very similar circumstances, back in 1984. He shot four thugs on a subway platform. A jury found him not guilty on every charge except a trivial weapons charge. But in the ensuing civil trial, Goetz lost a 44M judgement.

Penny is vulnerable in the same way. In a civil trial, there won't be any testimony about what a scary motherfucker Jordan Neely was. It will be a cold-blooded, merciless proceeding.

In a civil trial, Bragg would have a far better shot at Penny than he had in the criminal trial. He would countersue and walk away with his reputation restored, and a massive settlement to boot.
