Winter Holiday Cat Safety Tips

The winter holidays are the most wonderful time of the year and we want to make sure they're also the safest. While we revel in the good food and family fun, it's important make sure the traditions we love don't pose risks to our cats and other animals.

Several categories of holiday risks are discussed in writing, or watch the video for a few brief highlights:

Tilly rr.jpg

Good afternoon from cold New Hampshire K.T.

Although she passed ten years ago here's a nice holiday photo of our dear Matilda (aka Tilly).

Thank you as always for the wonderful pet thread.

Rodent

A great photo of beloved Tilly. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Here is a picture of our rescued dog, Beau, last year at Christmas. He is a pitbull mix and is about 6 years old. We have had him for 2 years.

What an absolutely wonderful photo of Beau - ready for Christmas! He seems happy that you rescued him.

Something special: PetMorons with a Christmas Gift:

Wolfhounds and Jack The Shiba in the snow.

Longtime lurker Diana Pool if you would be so kind. One of the dogs is on the cover of my (free download till the end of the year) book Selinon. His name was Beren, his favorite food was Ikea Swedish meatballs, and, alas and alack, he now runs in the stars with eight other wolfhounds I have had the privilege of affectionately accompanying over the years. They make up the Pleiades, which, contrary to popular scientific knowledge, have nine stars in the group and are not all sisters. Or so I choose to believe.

I have mentioned the free download in the book thread, but would appreciate if it were noted here as well.

I have many more photos if you wish to see some, and could write something on the breed as well if you are interested. A good website for the breed is Iwane.org and Beren took a first there several years ago.

Great dogs and great information. So sorry that you have lost Beren. We will be looking forward to learning more about this breed. There seem to be some specialists in The Horde.

A couple of pics of our Australian Shepherds, Belle and Bilbo. Belle is on the left and Bilbo on the right in the Christmas photo.

They're great companions and don't usually pose for pictures. A couple of treats can sometimes convince them to sit still.

Merry Christmas,
Steve

Merry Christmas! Great dogs. Congratulations on getting them to pose!

Oops. Missed the second photo at first. Sorry. It's a great one. And it DID require posing.

4 Howdy, Horde! Great pets as always,

This week's adventure for me features a cat that has peed in my bed twice this past week--including today.

She has litterboxes galore to choose from. I keep them fairly clean, scooping them out at least once a day.

Any suggestions?

5 After 5+ years Astrid has finally come to my chair and settled on my lap. She also slept with me the whole night. This happened Thursday. All these years she has been a fixture with my younger daughter and also her Sister but avoided me. Gradually I made friends without being pushy, to the point that she wouldn't draw away. Now it's all water under the bridge.
A little history. She arrived in our yard back in Feb 2019 as a 3 yearold?, already pregnant. She had at least 2 kittens in April 2019 (under our neighbor's back deck), one kitten wandered off - disappeared after weaning. In July we trapped Mom and daughter and brought them in so they could be spayed. The daughter is April. Well Astrid was already pregnant again!
She had 6 kittens that July but only 2 survived, Loki and Houdini. We've kept them indoors ever since.
That was our first pregnant cat experience.

10 Beautiful pets, but I admit the wolfhounds are stunning!!

All our other dogs loved Christmas. Our Newf would sit in front of his stocking, waiting for "Christmas to happen!"

Our pup now, Abner, hates it. He growls at the presents and pouts when I start to wrap. I have no idea why.

11 Cat messing with the train set up really takes me back. I had a matchbox track (the track was spring loaded, so you affixed two little plastic spikes to the bottom of the cars).

My cat thought this was the most awesome toy ever and would sit in the middle so he could reach most of the track. It was so predictable that my brother recorded the soundtrack of Godzilla right off the TV, and would play it while my cat swatted cars off the track. We never got to finish a race when the cat showed up.

35 Afternoon, Pet Folken! The longhaired black cat in the "O Christmas Tree" video looks, except for having green eyes, like my big late Wolf. And except for being shorthaired, the white-and-black reminds me of the late Chekov. I guess that's what happens when you've lived a few years past 29 and shared your life with many cats -- new ones are bound to look like one or more of the past felines.

A current feline, the big black Stirling, slept me with me just now, and is milk-treading my leg, purring, and settling down for a visit.

48 I do not know how she does it in a small apartment, but Dagny secretes herself from time to time. I get up or come home, and after a while I realize I see Stirling, but not her. Naturally I check all the closets -- they both love to dive in those -- and if I'm feeling energetic, I'll grab the flashlight and peer under the bed. Just as I was starting to think she might have gotten out -- the screen door was open for a short time late this morning -- she comes padding into the living room. No doubt she was under the bed this time.

If Stirling is not to be seen, almost invariably he's in a closet somewhere.

53 Fanny hides all the time. Scottish Folds are notorious for that. And she won’t make a peep to let me know she is there. I have boxes in the garage area (it was converted to a room) and she likes to hide in those. But she does not want out. She fell out the window once. I found the screen off and she was right outside it. One time, we came home and the front door was open. Didn’t catch right. She was laying on top of an old trunk we had on the front porch and Jake was in the house.

54 Our dogs are going nuts since Jules has been gone, hospitalized since 11/8. Esp Flash, the 16 month old Gordon Setter.

He's used to her being here all the time. Thankfully he's crate trained so when I leave he can be confined and not destroy what is left in the house. His list of destruction is long, from a TV remote to rolls of tp, to her glasses and much more. He also likes to tear up the carpet in one spot by her chair.

I called the vet to get something to mellow him out but they said I'd have to bring him in to get anything. Thanks for nothing. I'll try Benadryl, I think we used that on long trips to calm him down. Any other suggestions?

I left the screen door off the latch one fine spring day when I went out to check over the car. Linda comes by and calls me. Big black Wolf had slid out, strolled a few feet down the concrete walkway, and stretched out to enjoy the weather and watch the world go by. Obviously he had no interest in leaving his home, he just wanted to see what's out there.

Chekov D. Siberian was hovering at the still-open door, trying to work up his nerve to follow.

56 I can’t remember ever having a problem with cats climbing up the tree. Some like batting at the lower ornaments, but as with Legally Sufficient. we put soft not breakable, cat friendly ones at the lower branches and even then they didn’t make much of. Fuss. 63 Perfessor-I had a similar issue with one of my cats that was stress, and not a urinary or bladder issue. She took to peeing on soft things around the house-blankets mostly, some on the beds. Per my vet, I added two more litter pans in different areas of the house, put all soft blankets away, closed off the bedrooms when not sleeping, bought some waterproof mattress pads to protect furniture and beds (just in case). Added several Feliway diffusers in areas of the house. Vet said this can happen in multiple cat/animal households from stress, possibly territorial problems for a timid cat. My kitty’s issue resolved itself with all those fixes, and lots of love and attention.
