Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

Meet The PetMorons

PetMoron from History

Mitchell-Vicki-K0317.jpg

Have no idea of the date of this ancient photograph, but this is a distant Scots relative of mine named Mitchell with one of his beloved rat terriers. His family had a series of rat terriers over the years and they were all named Vicki after Queen Victoria*!

Clearly, genes on both sides of my family have helped to make me a lover of doggos!

As an aside, I have no doubt that somewhere above, Queen Victoria weeps for what has become of her country.

Hrothgar

Great photo and fascinating family history. Thanks for sending in this great illustration of loyalty.

bella c 2021.jpg

Hi, thanks for your Pet Moron Thread. I’m a lurker who has posted Bella and Luca our GSDs previously. Here is Bella’s Christmas pic from 2021. This will be our first Christmas without her after 14 years. She was my wife’s special girl. Completed CGC and therapy training and was my wife’s constant companion when I was traveling. She will be remembered and missed.

luca c 6.jpg

Luca is now six and is a dad’s boy who is all play except when I’m not home then he turns into the protector. He too misses Bella and has become much more affectionate with us.

Thanks for posting the thread - Redinabluestate

Christmas won't be the same without your wonderful Bella, but that photo is a great memory. And Luca looks and sounds like a wonderful companion.

A sad loss on December 3:

watson 03.JPG

I submitted pictures of my dogs several years ago. But today my dog Watson passed away. I knew he was near the end but I had hoped he would make it longer. He made it to be 16 years old and I'm including one of the first pictures I took, one of him with my other dog Tali and one from the day before he died. I found him as I was getting ready for work. It's been a hard couple weeks knowing this was coming. Good bye Watson. You were a good dog.

Buzzion

So sorry you have lost Watson. What a great dog. Tali also looks like a fine dog.

Sadie t ba.jpg

This is Sadie. She celebrates her 14th birthday on December 9th. As the picture shows, she still has plenty of spunk. She is a Basenji and behaves as such, a lot like a cat. Walks away during ear scratches, grooms herself regularly, prances vs. walks, knows commands but doesn't care, turns her back when she doesn't get her way, and shows little interest in pleasing her hoomins. Pretty spoiled pooch.

scampydog

Sadie certainly is impressive for her age! Thanks!

We had a Mexican friend who attributed much of his lifelong health to eating raw, dried rattlesnake meat as a child. But he said that it was important that the snake not be riled up before it was killed if you intended to eat the meat.

23 My new cat loves catching and bringing in snakes, and fortunately we only have garter snakes.
However they are all dug in for the winter, and he has discovered rats/

I can't leave the cat door open in the early mornings now, since he will bring live rats in and release them to play with here in the house.
The last one I was able to catch him before he let it go, the one before that had me dismantling the bedroom so we could get at it.

Get a cat, they are fun, they are always entertaining.

28 My dad once took home a bullsnake that someone had caught and put in a bag. No chicks here but we always store lots of hay for the horses which so non venomous snakes that eat the mice are welcome even though I have a strong startle response. I cant see myself ever overcoming my fear and catching a snake myself even with the pole and loop or grabbers.

And even though we only have prairie rattlesnakes around here which are not very aggressive I don't think anyone would have someone do a catch and release with them. Shoot and shovel and no need to shut up.

2) Remove food and water buckets and beds.
3) Take floor mats outside and power wash them.
4) Sweep pen with a broom.
5) Vacuum floor, especially along the fence line.
6) Use floor scrubber to wash floor.
7) Return mats, beds, buckets and dogs to pen.
8 ) Repeat steps 1-7 for the other five pens.
9) Hand out bones.

I have similar ones of my late classic red tabby-with-white, the part-Coon Arizona: with him as a kitten sitting in a bookcase and another on my lap, several of him at one year, and a set of him in his true prime at age eight. He lived on another eight years beyond that, and I must have some pics somewhere of that epoch as well.

52 Sorry for the loss of all the sweet pets. It's heart wrenching, been there done that. It was never long before a new four legged friend takes up residence, and that really does heal the soul.

Had a great horned owl sitting on a stump less than a foot from the chicken coop last evening.
Staring long and cold at my hens. It's a totally enclosed coup but the hens don't get that concept. They were cowering. I'll bet no eggs today.

That owl was the size of a small Labrador.

56 The top pics, I first thought, could be from the TNG episode "The Measure of a Man," in which Data faces the threat of being disassembled. But while Riker has his beard in that episode, the uniforms in these pics are the later ones. Still, funny stuff.

The only dog park I know well is the one in the lower French Quarter, a former city public wading pool and playground, but now is pretty much reserved for people who live nearby to bring their dogs. We haven't seen any snow to speak of since 1989 -- so snow angels are not a thing, there or anywhere.

58 Basenjis are great dogs but must have their way.

Our Basenji, Sheba, knew all her commands but decided the circumstances when she would obey.

She wouldn't heel, unless she wasn't wearing a leash, then and only then she'd heel like a pro.

If I walked her (unleashed) up to the grocery store, and told her to sit and stay, she'd sit and stay, until I came out.

Often she wouldn't eat her dog food. Instead, she'd pretend to be asleep near her dish, top eye closed and lower eye open. When birds landed to eat her food, she'd suddenly leap up, snatch a bird then eat it.

Strange dogs but always interesting.

70 Mr. Gaga--

Our Luna also takes Simparica Trio. It's for heartworms as well as fleas, ticks, roundworms, and hookworms. It is pricey, although it's less that $300 at our vet. We talked to our vet about alternatives but decided that if we replaced it with other meds that did the same things the cost differential wouldn't be all that much. In addition, it works well with our dog and it's fairly easy to administer.

The vet's office also told us about Zoetis Rewards. Zoetis is the company that makes Simparica and they give small rebates (about 10%) for each purchase. We just reupped Luna's Simparica earlier this week and I have submitted the receipt to Zoetis. They'll automatically add the balance to my rewards card and I can use it to pay the vet.

71 69 Cats love boxes but also will sit in anything 'circular' such as a loop made by string or rope. I'm not sure how such a trait was acquired. Anyone Know?

Learned that lasso trick from old cowhands sleeping on the ground.

72 Thanks for hosting, K.T. sorry to hear about Watson and Bella. I sure wish our doggos lived longer. Quick sammich break - trying to finish up shopping today. Thanks for the Sadie comments. She does also respond to the name Queenie, which is moderately amusing.

73 So Buckley went off to boarding school Wednesday. I did have to sell my left kidney to pay for it but it should be worth it when he comes home. To break him of the jumping, counter surfing, pulling, etc. I realize he is in his rebellious teen phase but I don't have the skill or strength to train him further. He picked up some bad habits and that's on me and my uncooperative family. I didn't want to rehome him. I made a commitment when I took him.

74 [Basenjis are] an African hunting dog known in their language as the "jumping up and down dog" because they're a sight hound and to be able to see over the tall African grass leap up frequently to spot their prey.

Along the Nile, the reeds and grasses would be tall. Wereb these dogs bred by the Wertheallawi (sp?) tribe of pygmies?

75 So how long will Buckley be in reform school, lin-duh?

76 Around 4 weeks. He is a fast learner but making it stick is another matter...

The tribe?
Have you ever heard of the lost pygmy tribe the Halarwi?

they walk around the tall grass saying "were the halarwi"

78 Often she wouldn't eat her dog food. Instead, she'd pretend to be asleep near her dish, top eye closed and lower eye open. When birds landed to eat her food, she'd suddenly leap up, snatch a bird then eat it.

Strange dogs but always interesting.

79 We had a Basenji that was stolen out of our backyard. That’s when a bark would have come in handy.

82 Beautiful Moronimals, both living and departed. My Basset X Border Collie, Pogo, looks much like Watson in the face. She is pretty old, now, too, will be 16 in April.

They met a couple giant women, leading to the formation of a new tribe, the Hekawi.

There was a project in 2020 to determine if cats just like to sit on square things. I think the researcher mailed out round targets with a 90 degree bite out of them, and the study rules were to put them out in a square, with the bites looking at the center, and then doing it again with the bites facing outwards to see if the cats would sit inside the square established by the corners. IIRC it was a positive for the imaginary squares luring cats.

I do think it is something to do with how they see things with the slit pupils.

88 Sympathies on Diana Hadrian. Sounds like my gelding except Tanza was quite sturdy until he injured himself. But he doesn't know how to not overdo and let himself heal.

89 I should say until Tanza got injured. I think that happened when I was riding him. It makes me sad, feeling like I broke him.

90 Buzzion - my condolences about Watson. We lost one of our dogs a few years back. I also found her getting ready for work. I've cried three times in my life, that was one of them.
