Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - November 20 2024 [TRex]

[Cadillac Ranch, Amarillo, Texas.]

Good evening Garbage Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety. So it is written, so it shall be done.

Pull your belts tight, secure all valuables, and keep your hands and feet inside at all times. This is the Wednesday night ONT.

Chuck Norris does not read books. He wears them down until get gets the information he wants.

Chuck Norris frequently donates blood. Just never his own.

Chuck Norris does not breathe. He holds air hostage.

When Chuck Norris was born, the only person who cried was the doctor. Never slap Chuck Norris.

Chuck Norris destroyed the periodic table because he only recognizes the element of surprise.

Chuck Norris was an only child...eventually.

Chuck Norris has a grizzly bear rug in his bedroom. It is not dead. It is just too scared to move.

Chuck Norris once kicked a donkeys chin. Its descendants are called giraffes.

Chuck Norris did not dial the wrong number. You answered the wrong phone.

There are no Chuck Norris jokes. Only Chuck Norris facts.

One of the most famous moments of college football took place on this date (November 20) in 1982:

Poll question informed by personal observations over the past two weeks: How early can Christmas decorations emerge?

1) The minute Halloween ends, full speed ahead. Deck the halls, convert the radio station formats, put up the lights, and dial up the advertising.

2) Give it two weeks to put away Halloween and enjoy fall colors. Then move gently and gradually and start sprinkling glimpses of Christmas. Be careful not to overshadow Thanksgiving.

3) Celebrate Thanksgiving and then release Santa and his elves for Christmas.

4) Never take Christmas decorations down. Problem solved.

5) Bah humbug. Never put up decorations. Problem solved.

***

I have not been able to figure out whether this is real or not. For ONT purposes, the answer does not matter.

The back seat of an Apache helicopter? Seems like a Chinook would be more comfortable but maybe you work with what is available.

As the maintenance personnel approached the chopper, which is armed with a 30mm cannon and Hellfire missiles, realised that the rotors on the helicopter were swaying up and down and strange noises were coming from inside.

The crew, who had been on their way to fit rain covers over the war machine following its service, got closer and realised to their disbelief that two people were crammed into the rear cockpit of the two seater aircraft having sex. Two drunk soldiers caught having sex in Apache helicopter.

The Horde Might Know Things:

The sign below and accompanying scale models are located in the North Carolina Racing Hall of Fame (near Charlotte). As the sign says, the museum would like help learning more about the two model cars in their collection. Does anyone in the Horde know or know someone who does? Tried on the Hobby Thread without success, so now time for ONT power.

12 I was at Cadillac Ranch 2 Saturdays ago.

Not only are the Cadillacs spray painted, but the access road, jersey barriers, and dumpsters are as well. Very chaotic artistic. My brother took lots of pictures.

A street vendor trailer sells the spray paint and memorabilia. The site is just off of an interstate in Amarillo.

13 Reddit is veeeeeery concerned that once all the illegals are deported by literally Hitler, the price of food will increase. Oh so now they’re worried about inflation. But the past 4 years that saw Fox price double was no biggie.

And yeah if millions of illegals really are deported (I’m skeptical it will be millions) the price of things will go up. Including food. They’re not wrong. But their sudden consternation about it is hilarious.

14 Sorry I'm late, the hinge on the pantry door was squeaky, so I went to get the WD-40 to spray in it, but I forgot that I used up all the WD-40 while I was working on the oscillating neuro-scintilator last week, so I had to go to the hardware store to pick up a new can. When I cranked up the ol' Firebird, I noticed that the significant other had come home with the gas tank at "E." Again. I texted her to express my disappointment, and she said to get some celery and a box of Tater Cremes while I was out. "But the market is on the other side of town from where I am going." She responded with the Nike slogan. Okay, I filled up the gas tank, picked up the celery and Tater Cremes and came home. I went to put the Tater Cremes in the pantry....

SQEEEAK

Damn! I forgot the WD-40. The hell with it, I just spritzed the stupid hinge with some cooking spray. Problem solved.

17 From Hagerty.... Regarding the Mazda 323 GTX's

From this dusty swirl of cutthroat competition was born the Mazda 323 GTX, by far the rarest flavor of the Japanese brand’s plucky two-door 323 hatchback (called the Familia in Japan). Imported to the United States for the 1988 and ’89 model years, the 323 GTX combined turbos, all-wheel drive, and a race-ready chassis into a rally package like Mazda had never produced. And yet, people forgot the GTX in the intervening decades since it was last offered for sale. That’s a shame—this hot hatch’s rarity, performance cred, and period styling would make a quirky and rewarding addition to any collection.

The catch? Finding one is tough, as only 1243 examples ever made it across the Pacific to settle in American garages, and many of them were treated… vigorously.

24 Honestly there are so many moving parts that its hard to predict exactly what will happen if we can deport them all - You'll have increased wages and jobs that will need to be done by someone (looking to empty the welfare rolls here too) increased prices since they can't be paying illegals slave wages, reduced demand due less people.

Not sure how it will shake out but I voted on the premise that I'm damn ready to find out.

I was more focused on SOTA, but the area where I'm vacationing is pretty flat so I went to a state park. The Midwest seems to be a good spot for radio, probably due to its proximity to the higher population density along the eastern seaboard. I might hit another park tomorrow or Friday if the hunting stays crappy.

And then they went to work. They put up the tree and decorated it. Put out all the Christmas decorations all over the house. Put out the presents. Hung the stockings. Did everything. And when my sister and I came down the next morning it was frigging magic. Santa brought everything, even the tree. I could never figure out why my dad kept dozing off on the couch.

Actually, you fixed it *better* than you would've with the ol' WD.

See, WD-40 is neither an oil or a lubricant. That it exhibits such qualities is but a short-term artifact of the "carrier" fluid, which is the base of it's Water Displacing formula.

Oh, and as a bonus? Spray an old tee shirt down with WD-40, and wrap your favorite, old, blued handgun in it before you store it away. You'll come back to find a dulled, mottled, and utterly ruined finish on what used to be a gun to be proud of.

Buy either name brand lubricating oils. Or, one quart of Mobile One, and have all your gun and household lubricating needs filled for a lifetime.

Depending on the time of day, it takes an hour just to drive from one side of Houston to the other. Katy can be another hour. San Antonio 3.5 hours from Katy. San Antonio isn't even 1/2 way to Amarillo. On the way to San Antonio you'll notice these two little hills. If you look North and South from I-10 you'll notice they go off into the distance.

If you look at a satellite photo of TX, you'll see this is the edge of a giant impact crater which predates the Rocky Mountains. The western edge of the crater was obliterated when the Mountains formed. The center of the crater looks like it is in the Midland - Odessa area.

JackStraw, that is how I grew up.

For several years I volunteered with Catholic Charities in a southern town. We did a huge Christmas drive for needy families. It takes ALOT of planning and organization for an event like that. We would start working on the event late summer. We served 200 families and provided toys, clothes and a full Christmas dinner. Almost all of the families were POC. We would get complaints saying "we don't want white people food". Really, we provided your family with a turkey, ham and many of the usual Christmas dinner items.

Sometimes you can't win.

263 233 It would take 9 hours to drive to Amarillo from Houston.

Posted by: Ancient Motorist at November 20, 2024 10:57 PM (nS6qG)

Part of that was cooler-running engines, leaded fuel, and no catalytic converters. On short runs, mufflers would become wet with condensed water inside, and partially-burned fuel would dissolve in it, forming a weak acid, that eventually ate through the metal. A long road trip, say 20-30 miles, would heat the muffler up enough to drive off all the moisture.

325 The Sierra Vista area is godly. Plus they have a nice Honda Motorsports dealership where I almost bought my Honda Trail 125. The Huachuca McDonald's is where the drive-thru part of the business started. Why? Because the military peeps had just enough time to leave the base, drive through and get back to protecting America from southern Arizona. I know, the whole thing sounds like I making it i up.

Get a small posable skeleton, curl it into the fetal position, and position it appropriately in the big one?

Which reminds me of one of my favorite misuses of statistics: the average human being contains slightly more than one skeleton.

341 WD40 also plays hell with some varieties of stainless steel. Ed Harris told the tale years ago on the old Fidonet Firearms group. He was QC manager at Ruger at the time and they had a spate of barrel failures of stainless revolvers. In one case, the barrel actually snapped off when a deputy hit a bad guy with his gun.
It turned out that a machinist had ran out of the specified cutting oil on the machine that formed the threads on the barrel where it screws into the frame and had substituted WD40. The residue corroded microflaws into major cracks. Huge recall.
Incidentally, I still use the original recipe "Ed's Red" published there to clean my fireams.

You're a celebrity now... The rules are different for celebrities. I know it. I've been there. I've been a celebrity. I used to be a bigger celebrity. But let me tell you, you're not being handled right. This is not political news coverage. This is celebrity status. You need handlers. You need to understand what you're doing. You need to understand the attitude of the media toward celebrities.

And I think about this in relation to Trump, who seems to understand celebrity media rather well though he seems to get it himself instead of needing handlers.

The Ford Tempo was a late 80s front-wheel-drive car, one size down from it's styling inspiration, the Taurus. One size up, from the Escort.

Usually, quite reliable to reach 100k mi. Guesswork and sorcery, thereafter. Driving experience best described as "coma-inducing". It was a vehicular appliance, but it lacked the soul of a CAR.

Remember cars in front of you dragging mufflers because a U-bolt attachment point on the frame had rusted-out? Ah, the good old days.

Old cars did wear out and fall apart much quicker. Peak car was reached with the Panther platform. The good things about old cars combined with the good things about newer cars. Its all about the benjamins though.. Just think, there's no reason why we couldn't have a 65 Chevy Impala that wouldn't rust out, get 25mpg on the freeway, have the equivalent power of an old big block, need hardly any maintainance besides oil changes and brakes occasionally, and last 250-300k. Only computer is to run the engine and transmission, and cost $20-25k. Can't make enough money to pay the big shots another $100 mil a year off that though.

Posted by: Jordan61

It would appear they have much bigger outages to clear up before they get to our little area. PSE outage map shows the Eastside got hammered.
----------------------------
It was a big nothingburger in the South Puget Sound, although closer to the Cascades there were a lot of downed lines and power outages. Very unusual wind pattern, strong winds from the EAST due to an inland high pressure system spilling over the mountains towards a hurricane-level low pressure system off the coast. Areas in valleys running down from the Cascades got smacked.

That football moment happened at the '82 Cal-Stanford Big Game. Remember it well. The Snodfarts (now "Trees") thought they had the game wrapped up after a FG, kicked a squib kick that Cal proceeded to move down the field via a bunch of lateral passes, even while the Snodfart sideline and band thought the game was over and rushed the field. The final Cal ball carrier ran over a trombonist to get into the endzone. No whistle had been blown to call the play...TD Cal!! As a UC alum, the Snodfarts deserved it.

439 I loved the football and band on the field video! What fun!

I saw ZZ Top in or around 1975 while in college. With a group of guys and random girls I went to concerts with. It was wild.

We had 5th row floor seats we paid extra for in a large venue. The crowd decided to stampede the floor from the upper decks, and one of the guys grabbed me to prevent me falling off the chairs. But the concernt went on and no one cared or was stomped to death.

I am pretty sure this was the concert where there was a rattlesnake onstage in a glass cage. I hate snakes, big time. I was not hallucinating as I saw a snake and blame ZZ Top. I don't think any other concerts I went to were nuts enough to have a snake.

I will have to ask my friend if I see him in a few weeks, as I am positive there was a snake onstage, probably pretty ticked off by the vibrations.

Rock on, Morons.

The article is misleading. It's not Nestle's fault. You have to read down to see the cause of the price hike. I've edited the relevant text for accuracy and clarity:

Coffee prices have steadily gone up throughout the year because of climate change induced droughts in Brazil and Vietnam, the world's two largest producers of coffee beans.
