Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Establishment Protegee of Mitch McConnell and Confirmed NeverTrumper John Thune Wins Senate Leadership VoteThune only has a majority because of Trump's agenda and Trump's voters. But he will now execute McConnell's agenda of thwarting Trump's agenda and Trump's voters at every turn. Usually he will do so as McConnell did -- sneakily. He will claim to support Trump's agenda publicly and then arrange tactical "losses." He has a coward's heart.Sen. John Thune will replace Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) as Republican Senate Majority Leader after a close contest Wednesday that took two ballots to resolve. Thune, McConnell's top deputy and an establishment favorite, must guide a conference hungry for changes after McConnell's iron grip. He's also tasked for guiding President Donald Trump's agenda through the Senate, advancing his nominees swiftly and moving Trump's aggressive legislative agenda. Thune received 23 votes on the first ballot -- four short of locking up a victory. Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) received 15, and Sen. Rick Scott 13. On the second ballot, Thune secured a victory over Cornyn 29 to 24. Republicans convened Tuesday night for a leadership forum organized by Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) as they grappled with who best to lead them through the Trump administration and beyond. Those discussions centered on how to return more autonomy to individual senators as well as effectively advance a conservative agenda after McConnell often partnered with Democrats to advance legislation, most notably spending bills, disfavored by conservatives. Newt Gingrich talked about whether Trump would publicly champion Scott on 2Way (Mark Halperin's podcast). Would Trump intervene? he asked. Only if Trump believed his intervention would result in a win for Scott. He wouldn't intervene in a losing cause. Senators are bitchy and vengeful and if you thwart them, they will sabotage you. (Of course, Thune and Cornyn and the rest of the gang of liberals already plan on sabotaging Trump.) So intervening only makes sense if it will result in a win. Remember John McCain and his traitorous vote on ObamaCare?, Gingrinch asked. I guess the Liberal Establishment Caucus is just too big. We need to do something about that huh? Gingrich said that when you plan to take on members of your party, you have to consider the costs of winning, how much you're "bruising" the people you run over.

McConnell is very much a Trump toady. He had the power to stop this monster at many turns. He supports Trump. Not always, he's absolutely in favor of the Ukraine war. And spoke publicly and privately against him. I am not giving praise…just saying he's certainly the lesser of 2 evils Words are cheap. He stole 2 Supreme Court justices from Dems and didn’t lead his caucus to vote to impeach Trump-twice. Will Thune show some backbone and push back against Trump's agenda. Probably No. When Trump tried to repeal ACA in 2017, there were only 3 Republican senators who voted no: McCain, Collins, Murkowski. Thune voted for the repeal. [Reprising my comment & whig's response earlier:]
My understanding is that the VP -- as the President of the Senate -- can preside over Senate sessions and thus, instead of a Treasonous Majority Leader like a McConnell or a Thune, can choose whom to recognize for proposed legislation & debate (and which Traitors to ignore). I've heard that Trump considered doing this in his first term, but of course that rat-bastard Pence wouldn't cooperate. Let's have JD Vance run the Senate daily when they're in session -- and have frequent recesses so that Trump can make recess appointments. MOAR BOSS MOVES! ====== It is actually the constitutional option. Only leaders in the House and Senate specified by the Constitution are the Speaker of the House and the Vice President of the US who is also President of the Senate. The rules of either house flow downhill from those particular offices. In many states, the Lt. Gov fulfills the original role of the VP in the US Constitution by running state Senates (sometimes that is affected somewhat by party control). AOC asked people in her district who voted for Trump and voted for her, why they did that. Lots of interesting reasons. The most common was I want someone to keep Trump in check followed by Gaza. And by Gaza they mean they hate that Harris doesn’t hate Jews enough, which is really stupid when you consider Trump is way pro-Israel. It’s weird.
So to answer the question how could people vote Trump and democrats for the house/senate…there ya go. Lots of people out there who don’t see politics back and white like we do. Posted by: It is Go Time Donald at November 13, 2024 01:37 PM (g/4UX) 63

I just don't understand why voters would pick Trump and not pick Republicans for Congress.
There are three possible answers: 1) People that only care about the presidency and did vote for the other offices 2) People that won't vote for Republicans, except Trump 3) People that had an issue with THAT specific Republican and not Trump or I guess 4) Fraud In theory you could get an answer to this pretty easily if you have some money and time and just interview people that voted for say Trump and not Hovde. This should be one of the most important things the GOP is doing now. Well, if it was an actual opposition party. ...Let's have JD Vance run the Senate daily when they're in session -- and have frequent recesses so that Trump can make recess appointments. 66 This is the actual reason why I don't actually get that worked up over who's sitting in the White House. nThere is always, and will almost always remain in the future, an unbreakble gridlock in the halls of power, regardless of who is president
— Same here. It's like Biden, he had full co troll and yet he didn’t really. Even within the full control of the house and senate, there are many warring factions that rarely can come to any agreement. In parliamentary systems it’s the same phenomenon. We just have the parliamentary system inside of the two major parties. It’s an unofficial parliamentary system. It’s a good thing long term that neither side can ever really have all the power. The Times:
Ukraine could develop a rudimentary nuclear bomb within months if Donald Trump withdraws US military assistance, according to a briefing paper prepared for the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence. The country would quickly be able to build a basic device from plutonium with a similar technology to the “Fat Man” bomb dropped on Nagasaki in 1945, the report states. “Creating a simple atomic bomb, as the United States did within the framework of the Manhattan Project, would not be a difficult task 80 years later,” the document reads. With no time to build and run the large facilities required to enrich uranium, wartime Ukraine would have to rely instead on using plutonium extracted from spent fuel rods taken from Ukraine’s nuclear reactors. 214 I don't think the 17th was properly ratified.
Why would state legislatures vote to loose their own reps in the fed gov? I think we need a forensic audit of all the Amendments starting at the end of the civil war. Put Nevada and Vermont back into territory status. Them being states and proper constitutional passage of the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments are a bit at odds with each other. Posted by: Reforger ======= Non-starter on revoking the 17th. But too many people never look at the history of the Senate under the old rules and there is a reason that by the time the amendment passed, most states filled those seats via popular referenda instead of the state leg selecting the senator. Senate, then as now, was filled with corrupt senators and party bosses with even less consideration for their constituents than there is now. Basically all the Founders recognized that all of the Constitution and its provisions does not work if the people of the US themselves are corrupt because politics is always downstream from society. A corrupt and venal society breeds corrupt and venal officeholders. Posted by: whig at November 13, 2024 02:12 PM (ctrM5) 342
The Senate is more sensitive to their donor base. Turtle played that vulnerability like a maestro, so I expect that the donors will use their influence in the Senate to "temper" Trump's reforms.

Exactly. Sounds an awful lot like extortion, doesn't it?
It is, its basically "you have to keep giving us billions or we'll start a nuclear war" which isn't gonna happen. Look I have sympathy for Ukraine, they were invaded by a mobster state to just take land because they didn't like how Ukraine was doing things. Fine, I didn't like how they were doing things, either. But that doesn't justify invasion, that was the entire point of the Treaty of Westphalia. But Ukraine is insanely corrupt, they are selling the weapons we send them in bazaars around the world, and the money isn't going primarily to the war effort but to pockets of Ukranians in power (and being laundered to US corruptocrats). So I get them being desperate: they want that money to keep pouring in, and are up against the wall against a much bigger, much more powerful opponent that is winning. But they're going about it all wrong and cannot be trusted, either. I am sick of the USA becoming entangled with scumbag conflicts where there are no good guys. I'm not sure that a 35+ year old nuclear device is still usable.
If Little Boy was still around, I can guarantee that barring excessive rust or corrosion, it would still go off. The half life of U235 is millions of years. The only thing that fails in a nuke is the initial neutron generator and all that does is speed up the process by a few fission generations. Since a fission generation is about 10 nanoseconds the bomb wouldn't have much extra chance to disassemble itself. The fusing radar might require replacing some components, but the bomb itself would still go. Posted by: An Observation sez China Joe not my president at November 13, 2024 02:20 PM (Da7Vv) 403

The House could pass individual budget bills with clearly outlined priorities and clear language about what the executive can and can't do. Instead, they sign CRs. So, Congress is just an enabling chamber for the executive.
Posted by: TheJamesMadison Cooke is still mired in his Englishness. He should remember Bagehot and his work on the unwritten British Constitution. Basically his thesis which is quite true for the US as well is that one could not understand how Britain worked by its supposed unwritten Constitution. Instead, in his time, he argued that ordinary MP's had no effect, neither did the Queen, but what mattered was the Cabinet. In our country, we have ceded power of individual senators in favor of the party leadership in the Senate. In the House, the leadership runs the show. Seniority used to alleviate some of the coordination problems and information problems in both legislative branches via strong chairs. But now, leadership has been centralized into something like the British government--the PM and Chancellor basically run the domestic politics with the PM and the Foreign Secretary running foreign policy. While we were driving to the hospital yesterday, "We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions" was the first song that came on the radio. I took that as a sign, and I am officially adopting that as my fight song/anthem/walk-up song.
I also told my FB friends that I wanted a photocopy of my face on the Trump "Fight!" meme - one of my dear friends accepted the challenge. Former UN Teacher Orchestrates Violent Anti-Semitic Attack in Amsterdam, Investigation Reveals
According to a detailed investigation by The Jerusalem Post, a disturbing connection has emerged between the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) and last Thursday’s orchestrated assault on Israeli soccer fans in Amsterdam. At the center of the controversy stands Ayman Nejmeh, a former UNRWA educator who now heads PGNL (Palestinian community in the Netherlands), the organization implicated in coordinating the violent confrontation. In a development that has sent shockwaves through European diplomatic circles, Nejmeh—who suspiciously scrubbed his UNRWA employment history from social media platforms following the incident—had previously posted content supporting militant activities. The timing of his social media alterations has raised significant red flags among security analysts. The investigation reveals a sophisticated network of coordination behind what initially appeared to be spontaneous violence. Which means there is no real domestic policy, everything is focused to service the foreign policy. Which is a problem the US faces as well.
Posted by: Kindltot ===== In the administrative state, the primary job that the legislative branch does is allocate money here and there and figure out some way via taxes, borrowing, etc. to write the checks. So domestic politics is by and large now budgetary politics (true for the US as well). Until Trump, most of foreign policy in the US was rancid remnants of the stale Marshall Plan, Petro and Euro dollar and oil markets, and a decaying Cold War alliance and intel gathering system. The US was expected to be there to actually fight and the client states were allowed to let their own contributions wither into almost nothing. US policymakers got high on their own bullshit as hegemon during the Clinton years and started doubling down on Color Revolutions, etc. along with Invade the World, Invite the World bullshit to try to magnify the US into a lasting imperial trading superpower. Peter Schiff @PeterSchiff I hate to rain on this parade, but the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is not a real department. It exists outside of government and has no authority to do anything. Like any one of a number of independent think tanks that already exist, it's free to make any recommendations it wants, and the government is free to ignore them all. Even if the Trump administration actually proposes some of the DOGE recommendations, they mean nothing unless Congress votes to pass them, which it won’t. Since no Democrats will vote in favor of eliminating any government department or agency—except perhaps the Space Force—the House will need over 98% of Republican votes. This is nearly impossible to achieve with so many RINOs still in the House and so many representing swing districts. In the Senate, even if all Republicans vote in favor of the cuts, they still don’t have 60 votes. Also, regarding firing government workers, the civil service unions make that nearly impossible. The best Trump can do is allow the workforce to shrink naturally through attrition. That will help, but the savings over the course of his term will be minimal...
