Trump Explains How He Became America's Garbage Man

Joe Biden has been sidelined by Kamala Harris in the final days of her campaign, with his apparent description of Donald Trump supporters as "garbage" underscoring her campaign's fears that the outgoing president is an electoral liability.
Since dropping out of the White House race in July, the 81-year-old Democrat has been hitting the trail to support his vice president -- and trumpet his own administration's achievements.
But US media reported earlier this week that Harris's campaign was distancing itself from the incumbent, and that it had politely rejected his suggestions to make more joint appearances on the stump.
The row over Biden's latest comments has now crystallized concerns that he is more of a hindrance than a help to her election bid's final push.
"Harris should obviously avoid many joint appearances with Biden until after the election is over," said Larry Sabato, a leading US political scientist and director of the University of Virginia's Center for Politics.
"Biden is quite unpopular and he's also rusty and off his game."
Republicans pounced on Biden's "garbage" comment as a reminder of the damaging moment when Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton called Trump's supporters "deplorables" back in 2016.

But Grandpa Funnyfingers wants attention! He will not go quietly into the basement!

On Wednesday the Biden administration also pushed back at the reports Harris has distanced herself from the president.
"They have direct communications pretty, pretty often. And he did have a conversation last night because he was proud of her, her historic speech, and he wanted to congratulate her," White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said.

Note she did not previously call for "grace" for Tony Hinchcliff, the roast comedian, or the Trump campaign.

It is one thing for media outlets to dismiss Biden's calling Trump supporters "garbage" as an idiotic remark by a senile old man long prone to gaffes. But to pretend he didn't say it or to ignore it completely is another matter entirely -- an example of media corrupted by politics.

That's exactly what I thought last night after watching it. Well, he does some of that self-depreciating humor at times. The days of unsuccessful presidential candidates just going away like Dukakis are long gone.

This year is actually skewing a bit less female. Heck, it's been shown that the entirety of the gender gap in GA is coming from black voters, namely that black women are so outvoting black men that they're accounting for something like 90% of the gender gap of the entire state. A state where white women vote Republican at about 70-30.

Yes, men should be turning out, but what we're seeing from early vote patterns is not exactly unusual.

It's curious:

1972 was a landslide because the President had been tremendously effective in his first term and the candidate opposing him was a loon that couldn't go two days without a scandal or bungle.

1980 was a landslide because the President had been terribly ineffective in his term, to the point where, in their desperation, they were saying "if you vote for the other guy, he'll take us into nuclear war!" and the electorate responded with: "And that's a risk we're willing to take."

2024 feels like the combination of both. You've got a President who was very effective in his first term going up against a (Vice) President that was terribly ineffective in their term. In their desperation, the party in power is saying, "if you vote for Trump, he'll install a fascist dictatorship!" and, it sure seems like the electorate is responding with: "And that's a risk we're willing to take."

Depends on how many loyalists (if there even are such) that Kamala brought on board in the DNC, the various DNC auxiliaries, etc.

Due to the truncated nomination process, I think she has very few of her people in the process. Obama retreads, a few Clintonites, and Bidenites probably outnumber her supporters.

Her bad treatment of her staffers probably limits her loyalty outreach but Killary had some of the same issues yet did have loyalty from Clinton world.

Romney won the nomination but his influence was more transient than that of Bushworld on the GOP. You still see Bushworld flacks and operators buzzing around the GOP but less so of Romney or McCain types.

I'm talking about those individuals, the candidates in waiting. They're not terrible at this, the way she is.

The Party may have had their reasons, and we're sitting here less than a week away, without any certainty that she's going to lose. That they're going to lose.

But she's terrible. Worse than Biden, really. The fact they can come close shows the party powerful are NOT terrible at this, and let's see what happens the next time they have a charismatic, likeable candidate at the top of the ticket. Something they haven't had for 12 years.

There is a hidden class structure in the US where basically there is the GOP party and its conglomeration of influencers, operators, etc.

Then there is the party base. Living in two worlds is a difficult thing. Especially when , like Peggy Noonan, you have humble beginnings, but suddenly all that surround you are the Boswash political axis of the country types. It is almost inevitable you lose touch with the others out there and you cannot really go home again. Peer groups matter a lot to people due to connections--even moreso in politics and media.

Even within the base as frequently demonstrated here, there is significant divergence due to localism in what is said, what should be said, and what should not be said.

Almost impossible to keep everyone pleased which is why some pols are so sullen. They get hammered regardless of fair or unfair if that is the zeitgeist of the media and the base.

I'm sorry, but I don't think it was ever viable to replace him with anyone other than Kamala. They could dream, but if they thought it was remotely doable, it was political malpractice.

If there was an actual primary, they might have been able to do it.

But, 3 months out from the general election, the primary already done, and a sitting VP with actual ability to have future at this level (as opposed to an old person obviously not up for it, for instance), and there's literally no other place to go.

It has to be Kamala. Even if Biden hadn't sent out the second letter, Kamala was right there, first in line for the spot, with no one else near her. Kamala just had to walk into the campaign offices and say, "I'm in charge now," and the machinery there would already be moving in her favor.

Not to mention not having time for donors to actually have a fight.

There's no reason to believe that Biden has already drawn up the pardon papers himself, and will release the Kraken once he's heading out the door. No reason to think that Trump will do that for him when Biden can afford to take the hit. It's not like he's going to be around much longer anyway, so he might as well take care of his family before he loses all senescence.

I think it is by and large Obama's party still and indications were that Obama did not particularly want her to fill Biden's shoes. Biden double crossed them and that seems apparent from their little public chat at Ethel Kennedy's funeral.

I get the same dynamic of Kamala and Biden that LBJ and Kennedy had. Kamala was forced on Biden and LBJ forced on Kennedy. Both developed a hatred for the other in the relationship.

I drag myself to vote every election, knowing I'm wasting my time, but I do it anyway. That's the exception. If every conservative or conservative-curious voter got off their asses and voted, states like NY would be much closer and I believe NJ could be flipped. Plus, we'd pick up more Congress reps and state legis.

Obviously, if Biden had really decided to bow out, he would have called a press conference, and announced as much. Instead, we get this lame notice on some obscure platform.

Obviously, it wasn't really from Biden, but it was nonetheless reported as if it WAS. So that's interesting.

It seems obvious to me that Biden was too ill to make a public appearance, and Kamala operatives took advantage of that. That is often the case for the GOP. It has the mentality of being the minority party which causes it to be strategic in where they recruit candidates and spend money. In many cases, the GOP actively sabotages and ignores candidates in urban areas that are Democrat at the lowest levels. That is because if those candidates cause the Democrats to get off their ass and mobilize, it will hurt GOP candidates at the state level for governor, etc.

So, they leave inner cities and other Dem dominated places without a choice which demobilizes more Dems than GOP voters at the state level.

In 2020, Biden won less than half of all registered voters. Of course, Trump only won about a quarter of them, but that leaves about 25% of the entire state that's effectively not voting at all.

391 Whoops, I was wrong. In Mass it’s now about 26% Dem, 8% Republican, 64% unenrolled. So registered Republicans are early voting in line with enrollment, but Dems are out-performing. Unenrolled is under-performing, but I suspect they’re more likely to vote on election day.

Won't happen. Ideally, GOP should rather affiliate with local parties (which is how Van Buren built the Dem party in the electorate way back for Jackson using patronage politics) that are capable of challenging the Dems.

I often wondered if in California, Oregon, Washington, etc. with jungle primaries that those opposing the Dem regime should create independent state parties to contest elections which allows them to affiliate or not with the GOP on specific issues in state government as a coalition rather than a binary.

I don't know what you mean by this. In the CA jungle primary most of the time the final ballot has 2 Democrats running. A third party can't even be a spoiler
