I think they don't want to let the bet ride. I think they are a little leery about keeping their neck stuck out, and that people will be as assuaged by their bromides, given Biden's total failure to make anything "better".
Not only have they taken a hit on Biden's confidence and know-how, but they also have taken a hit they can't totally deflect about "safe and effective Covid vaccines" and the like.
At this point, they want to go back underground until they can recover a little more of their reputation. They feel that it is bad enough that they can take a break and retreat underground.
And this scenario implies they will rely on the forgetfulness of the American public (which hopefully, will be less forgetful than they think).

All of that has been decided at least a month back. We'll find out (at some undetermined juncture) whether the Party has decided on a massive, blatant cheat, or a more palatable four year play, where they blame Trump for the disastrous state of the nation and sideline him constantly with investigations.
But after we let 2020 pass with impunity, voters will never decide another "election." That ship has sailed.
We're just waiting to see what's been decided.

But the other thing I discovered in a 40 year career as a lawyer was that there are a lot of highly credentialled folks who just weren't that smart about the real world. As my old drill sergeant Bobby Jean Rowlands might have said, I doubt Kamala could drain piss out of a boot if the instructions were written on the heel. She could however figure out how to get on her knees and rise in the world.
