30 In 604 BC, the Philistines, who had been under the rule of the Neo-Assyrian Empire (911–605 BC), were ultimately vanquished by King Nebuchadnezzar II of the Neo-Babylonian Empire. Much like the kingdoms of Israel and Judah, the Philistines lost their autonomy by the end of the Iron Age, becoming vassals to the Assyrians, Egyptians, and later Babylonians.

47 Yet, Samson would have the last laugh. As his hair began to grow back, so did his strength. With a few prayers to supplement his recovering power, he was said to have summoned enough strength to demolish the Philistine temple where he was being kept, killing himself and many of his captors.

75 I always found the story of Samson fascinating. Samson DID save his people, as God promised, but because of his choices, not in the way God wanted to bring it about. I interpret it as God WILL use us for the purposes he has planned for us, one way or the other. His plans will not be thwarted. There will just be far less pain on our end if we humble ourselves enough to do it his way. (See also Jonah.) We can either accept his will and comply, and live richly, or we will get swallowed by a whale, or imprisoned/die in a building collapse, until we figure it out.

I also wonder it it's a warning to slacker parents. They have to do their part, not just sit back and assume because your son is prophesied to save his people, that they can just coast and make God to do all the work.

96 I love Regina Spektor, she has a great song called Samson that alludes to the bible story, while tying it to a love in the modern day.

You are my sweetest downfall
...Your hair was long when we first met
Samson went back to bed
Not much hair left on his head
He ate a slice of wonder bread, and went right back to bed
And history books forgot about us and the Bible didn't mention us
And the Bible didn't mention us, not even once
You are my sweetest downfall
I loved you first, I loved you first
Beneath the stars came fallin' on our heads
But they're just old light, they're just old light
...Oh, I cut his hair myself one night
A pair of dull scissors in the yellow light
And he told me that I'd done alright
And kissed me till the mornin' light, the mornin' light
And he kissed me till the mornin' light
...Oh, we couldn't bring the columns down
Yeah we couldn't destroy a single one
And history books forgot about us
And the Bible didn't mention us, not even once
You are my sweetest downfall
I loved you first

97 Wow! This is effective and, from other Guercino paintings I saw, is typical of his approach. The natural and realistic figures make the scene more real for the viewer. The stark side lighting adds to the drama. Guercino often used rich colors, especially deep reds and blues, that set off the skin tones of the figures which emphasized the people in the story behind the painting. The stormy sky, with the dramatic lighting, and the tilt of the orientation of the strugglers really brings out the melee of the attackers. Then the entangled but discrete figures, each trying to bring down Samson, completes the feel of a mob.

The more I look at this, the more I see how the artist achieved his purpose. It is damn impressive.

The State provided "evidence" of Richard Allen "confessing" 61 times that he killed Libby and Abby.

Before that, they showed the two interrogations, where the nasty cop Holeman accused him of murder countless times, and when Richard Allen denied this, was interrupted by Holeman. Allen had enough of this, and got angry. The cop then testified that "his demeanor changed", so that was evidence of guilt.

Bottom line, Richard Allen was arrested, taken into "protective custody, and thrown into solitary and suicide watch for eleven months. He cracked after five months.

Oh, and as background, the defense is not allowed to bring up a 3rd party defense, nor talk about the weird Odinist shit going on.

155 @MichaelPruser

Arizona is another state where independents are nowhere close to pulling their weight. In 2020, they finished with a 68% turnout rate, and they won't get anywhere near that number this year.

Having followed the nationwide voter registration changes closely for the last 2 years and seeing many new independent registrations (across the country), it would appear the vast majority are not interested in 2024 participation.

-------

So, the above analysis dovetails with something I've been referring to for a few weeks: enthusiasm.

Registered independents are almost never actually independent. They're soft-partisans, the ones most likely to just decide to not vote if things aren't going their way.

I surmise that Democrats have absolutely no reason to be enthused about this election, that the assassination attempt, the coup, and Kamala have combined to create a worst case scenario where soft-D voters just feel like their votes don't matter and there's no point. Combine that with overall down D-registrations and early votes all over, and this election should be called before midnight.

179 The Philistines certainly had their hands full capturing Samson who had judged Israel for 20 years.

>The Book of Judges, The Bible.

An interesting AI overview of the Philistines follows:
The Philistines were an ancient people who lived on the southern coast of Canaan during the Iron Age. They were a group of seafarers who came from the Aegean region and settled in Palestine around the 12th century BCE. The Philistines lived in a confederation of city-states known as Philistia, which included the cities of Gaza, Ashkelon, Ashdod, Gath, and Ekron.
The Philistines were different from the Israelites, who lived in the middle and eastern parts of Canaan near the Jordan River. The Philistines worshiped idols and false gods, such as Dagon, while the Israelites worshiped God.
The word "Philistine" is also used as a derogatory term to describe someone who is narrow-minded, materialistic, and indifferent to art, culture, and ideas. The term comes from the German word Philister, which was used by university students in early modern Germany to describe the townspeople of Jena.

Would pass hanging the specific painting but thank you.

The problem being these aren't mass removals. They're self-reported by individuals (usually at DMV offices) and done individually.

233 “What's I've seen as the actual argument is the rule against mass removals within 90 days of an election.”

That isn’t the direct legal issue per se, although it is ultimately part of the argument. What the DoJ attempted to do is state that Virginia has violated the NVRA and in particular that clause. But one main argument Virginia made in response was, firstly, the NVRA does not apply to non citizens. Then they further stated federal law which clearly reads that non citizens are not eligible to vote in federal elections and it is in fact, illegal. SCOTUS essentially agreed with that argument.

269 The Guardian: Israeli lawmakers have passed legislation that could threaten the work of the main UN agency providing aid to people in Gaza by barring it from operating on Israeli soil.

The bill bans the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, or Unrwa, from conducting “any activity” or providing any service inside Israel.

I think Sinwar found having a UNRWA ID on his body was the proverbial straw. It has been clear the UNRWA, if not actively aiding Hamas as has been accused, has been deeply corrupted by Hamas or their supporters.

That was disproved. There was a passport that expired in 2017 belonging to a different person who is still alive, and has been in Egypt since April. Basically, just a stolen ID.

There should be zero support for Netanyahu. He has been in contact with tRump and putting egg on Biden's face. He has not been bargaining in good faith. In fact today in news it was said he isn't going to until we have our elections.

Its an authoritarian government heading toward fascism. Hamas is really bad but the Israel government is not good at all.

this will make Netanyahu's ongoing campaign to murder children that much easier.

This is why, despite my loving the King James language in the Bible overall, some of it is hard to understand. The "he" and "his" and "him" in the first sentence refer to Samson, right? But who is the "he" in the second sentence? I mean, Samson was dead -- he could hardly be doing any judging of Israel. Greetings, Wolfus ... The unclear sentence might make sense if it were to be read as an epitaph -- IOW inserting the word "had" before the word "judged" -- rather reading it as the post-death career by a person other than Samson.

300 The Philistines worshiped idols and false gods, such as Dagon, while the Israelites worshiped God.
The word "Philistine" is also used as a derogatory term to describe someone who is narrow-minded, materialistic, and indifferent to art, culture, and ideas. The term comes from the German word Philister, which was used by university students in early modern Germany to describe the townspeople of Jena.

304 In a new peer-reviewed study, Ne'Kiya Jackson and Calcea Johnson outlined 10 ways to solve the Pythagorean theorem using trigonometry, including a proof they discovered in high school.

Two students who discovered a seemingly impossible proof to the Pythagorean theorem in 2022 have wowed the math community again with nine completely new solutions to the problem.

While still in high school, Ne'Kiya Jackson and Calcea Johnson from Louisiana used trigonometry to prove the 2,000-year-old Pythagorean theorem, which states that the sum of the squares of a right triangle's two shorter sides are equal to the square of the triangle's longest side (the hypotenuse). Mathematicians had long thought that using trigonometry to prove the theorem was unworkable, given that the fundamental formulas for trigonometry are based on the assumption that the theorem is true.

Jackson and Johnson came up with their "impossible" proof in answer to a bonus question in a school math contest.

309 My understanding is that while there is indeed no connection between the Philistines of old and today's Palestinians, the Romans derived their word "Palestine" from the Philistines, i.e. the ancient enemies of the Jews, when they renamed Judea and Samaria "Palestine" after the Bar Kohkba rebellion in 132 AD. The renaming was part of the Roman effort (unsuccessful) to de-Judaize the region.

336 “Don't know if that's about Samson or not, but that's always been my interpretation of it”.

The speaker in the piece is referring to both the biblical stories of David and Samson in the lyrics, but of course he’s just using them as an analogy of his own failed relationship which he is in agony over, and he is struggling to hang onto his faith in God in spite of his own personal tragedy. Hence his cry “Hallelujah”, even though it has no joy in it.

362 221 218 Remember the issue here as presented in the brief. That is, whether the NVRA which is very explicit and precise as to whom it covers, includes people who are not citizens and therefore ineligible under federal law to vote.

How you could object as a matter of law to that particular question can only be answered by stating you have ideological beliefs outside the context of law.

This is what you are up against.
Posted by: Marcus T at October 30, 2024 10:21 AM (FLWsw)

======

What's I've seen as the actual argument is the rule against mass removals within 90 days of an election.

The problem being these aren't mass removals. They're self-reported by individuals (usually at DMV offices) and done individually.
Posted by: TheJamesMadison
========
Two federal laws appear to conflict. One makes that noncitizens voting illegal and the other is the MVRA with the 90 day provision. Courts, when interpreting statutes, normally follow the rule of removing the apparent conflict between the laws so as to give both effect. So by interpreting the MVRA as non citizens are not covered by the act (thus the 90 days does not apply to them) because voting for them is illegal anyway.
