  • Arm has given notice to Qualcomm that it - Arm - plans to cancel it's - Qualcomm's - Arm architecture license. (Tom's Hardware)

CPU startup Nuvia paid for an Arm architecture license, which allowed that company to design custom Arm processor cores. Nuvia was then acquired by Qualcomm, which also had an Arm architecture license, and its - Nuvia's - designs became what is now the Qualcomm X series which has made its way into Windows laptops that for the first time ever provide adequate performance for Windows on Arm.

Arm is upset about this because its - Arm's - own cores don't provide adequate performance in Windows laptops so nobody uses them, and cores produced on an architecture license provide Arm less revenue than its - Arm's - own designs.

So Arm is suing Qualcomm for squillions of dollars and wants to prevent it - Qualcomm - from selling processors designed with its - Qualcomm's - own cores, despite it - Qualcomm and Nuvia both - having paid it - Arm - for a license to do so.

It - the entire situation - is a mess and I don't know how things will turn out.

My latest "tech" adventure: Making the @#$$%$#^@ pellet stove run.

Freaking auger motors are Made In Chynah crap.. and they fail frequently. I keep a couple on hand, but used BOTH tonight, to get the heat going.

Will check the connectors on the one that was "bad" right out of the box... likely just a poor crimp or whatever.

24 Pellet stoves are *not* recommended as a Primary Heat Source. They are best as a complementary source, or for aesthetics.

Well, guess what? It's our primary heat source.

No natural gas to this house. No existing ductwork, never had a regular furnace.

May all effort today result in great benefit to you and extreme anguish to the leftwits among us.

Posted by: IRONGRAMPA at October 24, 2024 04:50 AM (hKoQL)

28 @JQ: Sounds like a proper wood stove is in your future. Make sure it has a good ash shifter grate and catch drawer at the bottom to make removing of ash while keeping the stove going a much easier operation. You want that grate to be really thick wire mesh so it's strong and resistant to heat. Ask the manufacturer or the dealer if they can supply you with replacement parts (like that removable grate) if it fails. I'd go so far as making them show you the replacement part numbers and prices. "What, you don't believe me?" asks the salesman. "No," says me.

Combine that with a nice wide-mouth heavy metal pail to dump the ash into outside to let it cool for 12 hours, and then you can dump that pail into metal garbage cans to store the ash for later spreading on the garden before you till for the season.

Also, I found great utility in having a few pairs of leather fire gloves in a given season. When the unexpected happens (coals fall out and roll) it sure is nice to just be able to grab whatever fell out of the stove and chuck it back in without having to fumble with metal-scoop or tongs. I've even been able to pick up burning logs from the 'on-fire' end if need be.

Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at October 24, 2024 04:51 AM (O7YUW)

29 Yes, JQ. My able-bodied hubby does the lion's share of the wood-work. Harvesting, processing, splitting, stacking.
I like to split and stack some now and then, and don't mind hauling inside if I've a mind to. We do have a really big gas-powered splitter.

34 Good morning! Currently 70F out on the patio, headed for 90 before cooling off for the weekend (and hopefully the rest of the year). We may even get rain next week.

Yesterday afternoon, we had the contractor out here to begin planning the demo and renovation of the bathrooms. I was amazed that a tub, a porcelain throne, and a dual sink vanity could cost that much....

Posted by: CrotchetyOldJarhead at October 24, 2024 05:01 AM (3Ope8)

35 @31/lizabth: Another lesson I learned: Get the gloves long enough to cover your entire forearm to the elbow. I was wearing a shorter pair of gloves and I was trying to adjust the logs in the wood-stove and was lifting the front edge of a heavy log. My hand slipped, and my arm flew up and hit the top edge of the very hot metal (the body part of the front door seal) and I got a nasty 1/8" wide, 2" long burn scar from it.

Good fire gloves (with longer-coverage of the forearm) are a must.

36 We heat with baseboard heat powered by gas (3 year old furnace) servicing 2 zones more than sufficient to drive you right outdoors. Last week we got a tankless water heater that works awesomely, our kitchen is physically far from it and for once I can have hot water in 11 seconds instead of 45/50. Add the fact the house is very well insulated thanks to the former owner and we enjoy comfortable winters.

Attempts were made to work with Boeing and repair the satellite, but on Monday, the U.S. Space Force confirmed that the satellite had exploded."

Very odd. They don't say what the nature of this "anomaly" was. But apparently they knew there was a problem before it blew up. So that works against the idea that somebody was doing target practice with it.

Seems very odd for a satellite to "blow up" all of a sudden, after 8 years in orbit, doesn't it?

Made me wonder what the hell would be aboard a satellite that could explode like that. Then it occurred to me that satellite might have a limited amount of maneuverability, to assure it gets into, and stays in, the desired orbit. So there would be a certain amount of propellant, right?

60 @48/MrExcitement: "So there would be a certain amount of propellant, right?" Correct.

After a correction burn, if the satellite is out of position, that will be relayed to the ground station where they'll pull data from the satellite to find out why a perfectly good order to adjust by x,y,z is now off by some amount. If necessary a software or data-table adjustment will be sent up so that when they want it to move "so much" it moves only "that much" again.

Software can only compensate so much for hardware failure, and it sounds from what happened, that the hardware failed in a "catastrophic failure" sort of way instead of the "Why didn't it do anything?" sort of way.

79 The Ars Technica commentariat has experienced several rounds of mass psychosis over the last few years beginning with Elon Musk buying Twitter and firing all the censorship Communists. As near as I can tell this is his original sin in their eyes and demands days long struggle sessions every time his name is mentioned. And now that he's campaigning for President Trump has caused them collectively to morph into incurable rageaholics every time Musk's name or any of his companies are mentioned. What is most delicious about all this is Tesla is the most successful EV company which leaves them in an eternal state of cognitive dissonance. It is all quite amusing.

Thought I read last night it was gonna be a Trump story. And that there were people shopping around a dossier of information that would sink Trump. 2016 all over again.

86 Says one [Taylor Swift] rabid fan, "It's gonna be the biggest thing to ever happen in the city!!!".

Is it asking too much to force nitwits like this to be compelled to watch an hour of what happened to New Orleans during Katrina on the big screens at the Superdome?

89 It helps to remember that tomorrow, I'm taking my wife out for a performance of The Nightmare Before Christmas where there will be an orchestra playing along.

Oh, you will love it! We had the '20s "Nosferatu" with a high school orchestra from Waco playing the original score. One of my favorite movie memories.

I've discovered a large community of "un-screeners" on Substack. (Yes, they acknowledge the irony...) This cheers me up.

Lovely links today- thank you.

91 - I think that last stuff pixy talked about may have something to do with computer games characters or maybe that cartoon / animated movie with characters who have really big eyes. Can't remember what you call that genre.

I steer clear of anyone who is really into either one.

I'm sure the fans mean the biggest GOOD thing to ever happen here. Aside from the Snooperbowl win, I guess.

93 Intelsat-33 was made by Boeing.
So, at some point, it didn't work, and some manager said "Just shove all the parts inside and fasten that panel down tight. Nobody will know until it's in orbit."

And that employee did NOT fasten that panel tight, but just Boeing "tight"?

Does Fibber McGee's closet still make a sound if it's in space?
