Top Story

  • The San Francisco MTA is spending $212 million to move its train control system off floppy disks. (GovTech)

The system was installed in 1998, which is rather late to be using floppy disks that were (assuming it uses 3.5" disks) introduced in 1982. But Compact Flash, the only real alternative at the time that is still supported today, was only introduced in 1994 and was likely not readily available when the project started.

And given that it's been working for 26 years so far, we can't really blame the designers for being short-sighted.

The only thing chicken wings are good for, is to hold the whole bird steady while it's roasting in the oven.

And then the wings get thrown into the pot, along with the rest of the chicken carcass, to make soup...

15 "The system was installed in 1998, which is rather late to be using floppy disks"

The 3.5" 1.44 MB diskette drive + disks were common in '98. I'm not at all surprised this media was used as a data transfer method for rail in that year.

They could buy drop in hardware replacements that simulate a diskette drive and allow them to plug in a usb stick as the actual read/write media today if they wanted to, but I can see why they want to get off that system and technology by now.

Oh, and G'morning Pixy, and G'morning Horde.

Some great ideas yesterday on avoiding interruptions with my first smart phone, thank you all again. Going with the do-not-disturb mode probably. I need to use the phone as a data tether for my Garmin navigation device, so that seems to be the best way forward.

21 Specific replies from yesterday:

@no one of any consequence - "I use the "Do not disturb" feature so the phone does not ring if the caller is not in my directory."

Yup, this sounds perfect for my needs, I'll definitely be looking into it.

@M. Gaga - "Kind of a radical approach to privacy, but with it OFF it won't ring, it won't buzz, it won't light up, if someone calls or texts you."

I knew a lawyer who in the very early days of cell phones got one for his car. He used to do exactly this, much to the frustration of everyone back in his office. He was completely unrepentant about turning it off too, saying the phone was there for his convenience, not theirs. This amused me to no end, but I (unfortunately) can't use this because of the need for the data tether, otherwise this would fit me perfectly! "Eat voicemail and frustration, callers!"

@Skip - Thanks for supportive vote of confidence.

@MP4 - "I find having a rep as a misanthrope does wonders to keep people from calling you."

Been there, done this, bought the t-shirt factory.

@TeeJ - You had the idea of using the contact list as a filter for calls, I'll be using that. I might well want the immediate family to be able to interrupt me in an emergency, and I'll make sure they know that during work hours, only call if it really is one.

@m - I'll personalize it once I figure out all the functions, and this blasted swiping UI... UGH. Hate it. I'm an old desktop jockey. The old-fashioned pager method has some appeal, but I actually do want people to be encouraged to leave a message as long as I'm unaware of it when the call comes in.

37 Pixy: You had me thinking back to '98 and what I used to use for hardware for my desktop and servers back then. When I think of all the crazy hardware I bought near the bleeding edge, and how much cheaper and larger-capacity things got later, I almost could cry, except for the fact that I was having a blast at the time.

Had one of the first CD-R drives - the Yamaha CDR-100. Price then was $1,000 USD (ouch) and the really GOOD media was about $5 a pop (remember "gold" CD-Rs with the gold reflective layer and the pthalocyanine dye?) Those came down in price dramatically if you bought in bulk, so I offered to make copies of important company data for records keeping purposes at $10 a pop and made a tidy personal profit doing that for a company I worked for. They were happy, I was happy.

That drive died about 2 weeks after its one-year warranty expired. Yamaha quoted me $350 as a bench charge just to look at it. Other competitors products were less than $350 by then. It was obvious Yamaha didn't want to be in the repair business. Never bought another Yamaha product.

Went with a Plextor SCSI CD-R drive after that. Those things were tanks.

In a letter, written by Sens. 93 Washington College to remove the cursive logo.

As cursive gets phased out of young people’s education, the school wanted to be more welcoming to students who may have never learned the writing style.

Ah the siren song of being welcoming. Who knew that prospective college students were found sobbing in a corner because the school they might want to go to excludes them because they use cursive.

Elected official who runs Harris County voter registration hasn’t swiped into work in four years

First sworn into office in 2017, Tax Assessor-Collector Ann Harris Bennett is tasked with a wide array of duties that affect nearly every Harris County resident, from collecting billions of dollars in property taxes to processing millions of vehicle registrations and title transfers every year.

Records obtained through public information requests reveal Bennett has not used her employee badge to access any county facility since October 2020. She swiped her badge 92 times in 2019, seven times in 2020 and not once since then.

UK-based chip architecture giant Arm Holdings is nuking its architectural license agreement with US-based Qualcomm, which certainly escalates an ongoing legal dispute between the two companies.

The license cancellation will mean Qualcomm will have to stop selling products based on Arm designs by the end of the year. Bloomberg noted that this could "roil the smartphone and personal computer markets, as well as disrupt the finances and operations of two of the most influential companies in the semiconductor industry."
