THE MORNING RANT: Periodic Update on the EV Follies (10/18/2024)

EV on Fire for Header - Cartoon.JPG

Hybrids Are a “Bridge” to EVs in the Same Manner that Fried Shrimp Are a Bridge to Bug-Eating

With consumers on both sides of the Atlantic having emphatically rejected electric vehicles (with the notable exception of Tesla’s success as a boutique luxury product), EV dead-enders are now promoting the notion that the popularity of hybrids means that consumers just need a “bridge” to transition from gasoline-powered, internal combustion (“ICE” cars to fully-electric, plug-in vehicles.

Here are a couple of recent examples:

“Volvo Scraps Plans for All BEV Lineup By 2030, Eyes Hybrids As 'Bridge' To Full-Electrification”

“Volkswagen Building More Plug-In Hybrids as Bridge to EVs”

Enough already. Here’s an analogy. When I eat shrimp instead of grilling a steak, that does not mean that I’m crossing a bridge from beef-eating to bug-eating. It means that shrimp is another attractive protein option for me. Bug-eating will never be an option.

Hybrid vehicles are as much a bridge to full EV adoption as consuming shrimp is a bridge from eating beef to eating bugs.

Not a Parody from Motor Trend: Toyota is Struggling to Catch Up in the EV Market

Toyota was the wisest auto company throughout the electric vehicle bubble, embracing hybrid technology while resisting pressure to pursue the EV folly. Toyota chose wisely. And the propaganda media will never forgive Toyota for rejecting their beloved EVs.

Motor Trend, which was once a fantastic auto-enthusiast magazine, has long since embraced the role of being an eco-leftist propaganda outlet. This article about Toyota “struggling to catch up” to EV competition reads like a parody, but it’s actually serious.

“Toyota Pushes Back EV Production Plans in America” [Motor Trend – 10/03/2024]

The EV market is in constant flux and Toyota has never been ahead of the game, and it's apparently still struggling to catch up.

Oh my. Toyota is only the most successful auto company in the world, with a wildly popular mix of vehicles that dealers cannot keep on their lots, including an extensive lineup of hybrids. Meanwhile other legacy automakers like Volkswagen, Ford, and GM are in crisis mode because of their bad bets on electric vehicles. Motor Trend calls Toyota’s popularity and success ”struggling to catch up.” I’m pretty sure that Toyota never wants to catch up with Ford, GM, and Volkswagen when it comes to EVs.

The automaker has been skeptical about EV adoption, and turned out to be mostly right about its predicted slump in the market, but the world is still moving towards all-electric vehicle adoption and Toyota must still eventually adapt.

Motor Trend is free to dream of a mandatory, all-electric utopia where ICE vehicles are outlawed and Toyota is forcibly compelled to “eventually adapt,” but so long as Toyota can respond to the market, rather than obeying the communist overlords favored by Motor Trend, then Toyota will keep selling the non-EV products that automobile buyers overwhelmingly prefer.

California Cops: EV Police Cruisers “Nearly Unusable”

A few weeks back, I posted an email from a reader nicknamed “Wunderkraut” about the foolishness of using EVs for police cars. (I’m unable to dig up that link, sorry.)

Now comes this story out of California.

“California cops who are trialing Teslas ahead of ban on gas vehicles say they are nearly unusable” [Daily Mail – 10/16/2024]

There is a lengthy list of reasons given why the Tesla police car experiment is a failure, including battles against all the automated features such as auto-pilot and lighting. But again, the most obvious problem is that police cars get banged up and driven hard. Doing pit maneuvers and driving over curbs in a vehicle that has a combustible lithium-ion battery is literally playing with fire.

*****

Several Port of Los Angeles Terminals Shut Down by Massive Lithium-Ion Battery Fire

Speaking of combustible lithium-ion batteries…

“Multiple terminals closed at Port of Los Angeles after lithium battery fire” [Reuters – 9/27/2024]

Operations at Port of Los Angeles suffered disruptions as an overturned tractor trailer carrying a load of lithium batteries ignited a fire near Ocean & Navy Way on Terminal Island on Thursday, leading to the closure of several terminals.

Firefighters will continue to monitor the battery fire through Thursday night and Friday, Los Angeles Fire Department said in a statement, adding the fire is expected to last at least another 24-48 hours.

Lithium-ion batteries are proving too volatile to be transported via ship or by truck, and our transportation systems are already facing repeated disruptions due to massive lithium battery fires, despite EVs only having a very small market share. It is unthinkable how many nasty lithium fires we’d be dealing with if EV usage were higher.

Update - Coincidentally, just after I finished uploading today’s post, I received this notification from friend-of-the-blog George MF Washington. I had no recollection of this event in which a bulk shipment of lithium batteries caused an in-flight fire that crashed a 747. In the aftermath of this incident, a prohibition was implemented on such bulk shipments as air cargo.

If you don’t have time to watch the video, this article gives a lengthy but easily readable recap of the event:

“Alone in the Inferno: The Crash of UPS Airlines Flight 6” [Admiral Cloudberg]

Here is a brief snippet.

On the 3rd of September 2010, a UPS Airlines Boeing 747 freighter declared an emergency at 32,000 feet above the Persian Gulf, reporting the outbreak of every cargo pilot’s worst nightmare: a fire on the main deck. As the crew steered their aircraft back toward Dubai, the situation progressively escalated, as smoke filled the cockpit and the flight controls began to fail; and then the captain lost his oxygen supply and collapsed, leaving the first officer alone at the controls of a crippled leviathan.

The cause of the deadly fire would later be traced back to a now-familiar suspect that was not as well known in 2010: the plane’s cargo, consisting of hundreds of kilograms of lithium batteries.

Ich bereue den Kauf eines Elektroautos

We’ve all chased fads that we later regretted, or made a consumer buying decision that we learned from. A lot of car buyers in Germany have apparently bought their last EV.

“Germany suffers ‘spectacular’ 70 percent drop in electric car sales” [The Telegraph – 9/19/2024]

German disillusionment with EVs is real and it’s spectacular.

There are all sorts of reasons being given for why European auto drivers are now turning so emphatically against EVs, but it is really simple - driving an EV is a lot more of a hassle than driving an ICE car. There are so many consumers who did buy an EV but later came to regret it, and they will never buy another EV.

Mass market electric vehicles lost their one and only opportunity to make a good first impression.

*****

Your EV Virtue Signaling is not Your Landlord’s Problem

As I just said, driving an EV provides a lot of hassles, which leads to a lot of regrets.

“I drive an electric car and am moving into a rented property - can I get my landlord to install an EV charger?” [Daily Mail – 8/18/2024]

Daily Mail Get Landlord to Install EV Charger.JPG

I owned a rental house for many years. If I still owned it, not only would I refuse to install a charger, but I would also prohibit any electric vehicle from being garaged in the house.

41 Ctrl-F, "Prius" found zero hits.

Back in the 2010's, Toyota was an early company to actually provide an electric vehicle. People snarked on the Prius; I think even Jeff Dunham had stand-up bits about his own blue Prius (and his wife's reaction). Toyota also had hybrid cars, the Camry comes to mind.

This was in the early days of the tech. You didn't have stations; you installed an inverter at home to charge it overnight or whenever. There was a push for regenerative breaking - I think there were stories about crashes or something causing the flywheels for storing the energy to explode out from wherever they were stored.

I'm not sure how much they took from the government in "Rebates" and other tax incentives, nor do I know if and when it happened. But I'm thinking they saw a future, went to it, developed tech to support it, and are running up against similar issues that are causing failures in the auto market.

Only, they actually sell real cars and trucks, so they can handle the failure, and might even be able to overcome today's issues with more R&D - things like a better storage for powering the car, for one.

Would you have an issue with hybrids like a Prius being in the garage? Whether hybrid or pure EV, they both have a large lithium ion battery. Seems odd that hybrids are mostly accepted and treated as normal cars (in terms of spontaneous combustion), when EVs aren't.

Obviously, both are dangerous in accidents.

46 I don't know if it was previously discussed but, a few weeks ago, I saw a show where certain EVs - including pickup trucks - were tested and showed that by being so frontend heavy they were capable of causing major damage including running through heavy roadside barriers, tearing up asphalt, etc.

It was scary to think 'regular' passenger vehicles often share the major "moving" roads, such as turnpikes and expressways.

But they skipped the part where, you know, they have to show proof of concept. Test bed cities. Say, Phoenix, Fargo, to get a good temperature swing.

Show us how great the City fleet of re-chargeable snow plows work. For 2 years running.

Never mind the financials. Just demonstrate the goddamned things work. And they haven’t done that, because they can t.

71 EVs are not on the other side of the bridge. They are the bridge.

On the other side is the ban of all private modes of transportation. Leftists are now open about their plans. 15 minute cities aren’t just a dream, it’s their end game. And it’s already happening. Many cities across the world have begun banning cars in their urban core. Or if not outright bans, making it virtually impossible to park, ridiculously low speed limits, removal of lanes, etc. Those lanes are now bike lanes.

And even here it is happening, albeit on a Smaller scale. Lots of cities are taking the same approach. Make it as difficult as possible to drive and park so that eventually people give up.

All in the name of saving mother Gaia.

Ended up pulling the trigger in the last week. Settled for an F150 with the 5.0L Coyote V8. So far am happy with it.

Part of the reason I wanted to get something NOW was that a LOT of manufacturers are dropping down to 6 cylinders in their trucks, and I was going to settle for NOTHING less than a V8 (or diesel).

But to the point of this article, NO ONE really "wants" an EV. The people buying (or leasing) them are doing 1 of 2 things: 1) virtual signaling or 2) reaping government benefits like tax incentives or the "free" HOV lane passes.

My guess is that far too many k-12 science teachers don't actually teach 'science' as a process but rather a set of memorizable and isolated 'facts' that are to be regurgitated on a multiple guess style test.

Eh, it was that way back when I was in HS. It's difficult enough to get kids to do even the memorization part, because all they can think about is what's inside the pants of the other sex. In addition, now we have parents who view it as a legal matter if their kid doesn't get an A.

Meanwhile, as my son's chem teacher told me, they don't teach such arcane topics as pH, because it's too difficult for the darlings.

Don't ask me to explain it. I have a Bluetti 2k battery with all the data to prove the amount of electricity required to recharge the batteries. If I really want to save money I plug in a portable solar panel to recharge the Bluetti and I run the mower for free.

If you chart complexity against MPG you'd see a plateau somewhere in the last 5-10 years.

With complexity (parts counts) comes failure modes, and at some point, there are diminishing returns of where MPG savings are dwarfed by repair costs, so you just stop. Not saying that there AREN'T possible returns with increasing complexity, just that it makes sense at some point to stop looking.

Think Ford Modular engines, with variable valve timing and cam phasers (IIRC) require the replacement of heads rather than a simple inexpensive part that makes junking the car or making it someone else's problem a better option than repair and maintain.

There is also the problem that good science teachers generally can do other things than teach.

But they are paid the same or worse than the football coach that dabbles in teaching phys ed.

So a lot of good science or math teachers quit teaching to either go into administration where the pay and benefits are much better (12 month contracts, etc.) or they seek employment outside of teaching. My excellent HS chem/biology teacher became a curriculum administrator. Another science teacher in middle school left to become a vet, etc.

My aunt was a rarity. She taught science in Middle School for 33 years before succumbing to breast cancer. Basically a polymath and all her children are so gifted.

In most states, and school districts, there are a fairly rigid curriculum standards that come from the state ed departments. Those standards development and deployment are often hijacked by interest groups, distort what is necessary to teach in favor of tangents, and usually are designed to align with certain textbook providers.

Been involved in the development process as has my wife and it is not optimal. While eliminating the DOE would be good at the federal level, the state DOEs need to go too.

I suspect that generating electricity (even though we perceive it as highly expensive) is simply cheaper then drilling, transporting, refining, transporting again, gasoline product.

I think I saw somewhere that an overnight EV charge was something like $11.00 of electricity. If that gets someone 250 miles, my RAV when full uses about $30.00 of gasoline to get me the same 250 mile range.

Not a fan of EV's but in the right place, for the right usage, someone might save some money - until they have to replace the battery - the hidden cost in the savings.

Right now, due to fire risk, EVs are a much worse insurance risk than IC engines with Hybrids somewhere in between.

AFAIK, not sure that EV drivers are paying the higher premiums or if those premiums are subsidized by IC drivers.

They should be separate risk pools so that EV drivers pay their actual risk to homes, garages, and being damaged in minor accidents that require totalling the EV.

My guess is that most people would dump EVs in that case due to not realizing how 'risky' they actually are.

245 201 Do Hybrid EV's charge the battery while under gas power? Like an alternator charging the battery while running the car.

depends.

i'm most familiar with the prius (2006 with 207,000 miles on it). in my model, most definitely. the battery is an integral part of the transmission; the computer uses the interplay between the electric motors and the gasoline engine to manage gearing. power is always flowing into and out of the battery.

however, as i understand it, the plug-in prius adds an additional, larger battery that is charged by plugging it in. that particular battery can *only* be charged by plugging it in; the gas engine can't charge it.

however, it *also* has the normal prius battery that's key to the transmission.

A man increasingly showing signs of intellectual and physical deterioration (e.g., falling asleep at his trial and his own convention, sometimes appearing listless and tired at rallies even before Monday’s gobsmacking outing) seeks to pump himself and his followers up in feverish rallies that play on hatred of immigrants and revenge fantasies.

299 159 Gas mileage for conventional engines haven't improved in a very long time? Did we reach peak efficiency for combustion engines? Did they stop trying? Is it because cars are getting bigger again and they're tuning more horsepower out of these engines every year?

The way it was explained to me (and assuming that I'm relaying it correctly) is that you can set the timing of your engine to get really great highway MPG (like 25 to 30+ MGP even for your giant boat of a gas-guzzler), or you can set it to get really great city MPG, but the same timing won't work for both.

So you have to switch the timing when you go from one to the other.

Apparently this is possible to do (or was possible to do decades ago) with a manual switch on the dash, but the trick was, you'd have to remember to do it, other wise if your timing was set for city driving you'd get about 4 MPG on the highway.

One would think that this would be a trivial thing to program into the computer of a modern vehicle.

I don't know what prevents them from doing so.

303 I understand some of the advantages of electric drive. They accelerate much better, if only because maximum torque is available from 0 RPM, and electric drives don’t need to shift gears to maintain a power band. I could possibly be talked into a hybrid if it had powerful motors and a very long range. That would interest me more than just effective MPG.

All electric cars do not interest me at all. Charging one of those even near my house, much less in my garage, terrifies me. The battery is a catastrophe waiting to happen, they’re not easily repairable, and lithium ion batteries don’t recycle (to my knowledge).

That is often a problem with hired guns parachuted from outside to run a campaign is that they prefer to run their own style campaign rather than building it around the candidate's own weaknesses and strengths.
