I never stored links to webpages, I just punched the relevant search words and the same pages would pop up. Really obscure stuff, common stuff, didn't matter. Most relevant.
I'm not sure when it went bad, around the turn of the century I suppose. Somewhere in there. All of a sudden it seemed like, those web pages that would pop on the first page no longer appeared. I had to dig in a couple pages. Of course what they did, instead of the "proprietary" metrics of what should be displayed on page 1 they went to a pay model. You can buy the front page.
This horked searches pretty good, but I could still barely get the obscure stuff I was drilling down for.
As time went by, by about 2010 easily, it was just useless, page after page of somebody trying to sell me a bunny with a pancake on its head. Then, during the next 10 years, the search results ACTIVELY removed or would not display relevant links. They are scrubbing or preventing users from finding the info you are looking for, you have to know where to go specifically.

Thought of this myself, had to DDG what the actual provision was that acted as a shield for companies hosting 3rd-party content, much like FaceBook.
They're got a shield of immunity for what others post. But with them 'tipping' the scales again by leaning their whole corporate body against it, they do serious damage to the shield from the opposite side.
