55 Odd that the title doesn't include the honorary "von der Lilie."

This guy was the man. He made Elon Musk look poor. And he was certainly much more powerful than today's richest men.

It's a good portrait of one of the hardest nosed businessmen to ever live. It really captures that "trifle with me at your peril" attitude.

It's all monopoly money anyway. I'd say Rockefeller and Fugger probably had more substance to their wealth that Musk (although he does have SpaceX and Tesla- but how much of Tesla is propped?)

66 Financier warrior. Durer eliminates anything that detracts from the man's iron demeanor. Fuggers dealt with emperors, kings, nobility. Gold and real estate, threats and retribution.

Look at that background. If it hadn't been painted by Albrecht Durer, it could easily be mistaken for a masterwork by a 20th century artist.

112 From the last thread

James Carville has gone completely around the bend:
----
He lies about everything, except he is telling the truth when he says he’s going to have a roundup.

Literally, this election is about the Constitution. We are not going to have one if we lose it. I’m not exaggerating—I would love to debate anybody on that question.

I suspect there are three parts to this

1) Reving up lefty thugs/activists
2) Carville knows all sorts of lefty power brokers have objectively broken existing laws and should be prosecuted.
2) Carville also knows the novel lawfare strategies of Biden/Harris open up even more avenues for prosecution - imagine if Trump uses FARA like Biden did?

Mrs. Wolfus No. 2 tried to convince me that it arose from signs on medieval English battlefields advertising legal prostitution: "Fornication Under Consent of the King." Leaving aside the fact that it's not idiomatic English -- we'd say "BY Consent of the King" -- the word is much older than the mIddle Ages.

Of course this was the same girl who was convinced that she and I interpreted colors differently because her eyes were blue and let in more wavelengths of light than did my dark brown ones.

136 Interesting example of Durer's art. Compared to his better known portraits this one seems, at first glance, quite plain and uninspiring. Then I noticed the man's eyes and expression. The sense of firm purpose and determination comes through. The rather nondescript background makes the man's face almost pop out of the frame. His hat and clothing are not dramatic or demonstrate wealth, they are not important to him. In such a 'simple' portrait Durer has captured an essence and presence that grows on the viewer.

147 Tim Walz does Jack Woltz.

The world was still ridiculing the ad when the news came that Tim Walz, in another effort to assuage the doubts about his masculinity, had invited journalists on a pheasant hunt. A bunch of photographs of the “hunt” are circulating. You’ll see lots of outdoorsy garb and a few dogs. What you won’t see are any shotguns. ...in the fake, synthetic world of Harris-Walz, no guns were thought necessary. As someone quipped, perhaps they were planning to catch the pheasants by hand and strangle them. Eventually, Walz was given a gun, but it was painfully clear that he had no idea how to handle it. ...Candidates can suddenly turn things around and emerge victorious after weeks or months of trailing in the polls. The most difficult obstacle to victory, however, is being made to appear ridiculous. That is almost inevitably fatal. Harris and Walz have made themselves ridiculous time and again this last week or two. I do not believe they can recover.

The disease thing is kind of fascinating. Cortez accidently spread smallpox all through Mexico dooming the homicidal regimes there, but it really was accidental.

Cortez went to Mexico with a smallish party against the orders of the governor in Havana. He made contact with the local Indian powers in Mexico and saw the potential to unite the anti-Aztec factions against the Aztecs.

Meanwhile the governor sent an army to bring Cortez back. Cortez won them over to his side (these people have lots and lots of gold!) and the governor's army joined him. One of the guys in the governor's army had an active case of smallpox...

I don't really see a paradox in wanting an effective anti-woke military and trying to avoid war. Morally we should only enter a war when we have to and then attempt to win it as quickly and with as few American casualties as possible.

This modern notion of the military has mostly a social change organization that occasionally bombs people...but only in a proportional way... is EVIL. Dragging out wars only causes more misery.

That's the point of DC foreign policy - maximum chaos, maximum profit. From the regime's viewpoint, our wars aren't always being lost... they're being won, because the point is to keep the skim going as long as it's feasible to keep dumping men and money into them, and then leave behind a situation so completely fucked up that it sets the table for our next adventure.

I don't know if anyone's been talking about this over the weekend, but the DOJ sued VA on Friday.

Why? Because VA removed 6,000 non-citizens from its voter rolls. The process that identified these 6,000 was self-identification. They told government officials at some interaction (I think it's mostly DMV interactions) that they are not US citizens and should be removed. The state gave all of them opportunity to provide documentation that they are US citizens.

The DOJ sued to stop that.

In VA. Where it's a felony to knowingly add non-citizens to the voter rolls (a law signed by Tim Kaine in 2008 ).

Remember, VA is to the point where the DOJ is filing obviously BS lawsuits over 6,000 illegal voters in VA, but NC is pretty much in the exact same spot it was 4 years ago.

The GOP needs to get off its collective ass and start filing frivolous lawsuits against the Democrats in every state. Do it daily. Allege voter fraud, election tampering, whatever.

It's not so much about winning those suits as it is causing the left to divert resources, time and money to fight off the accusations. If they're focused on "winning" a lawsuit they're not focused on cheating. At least in that particular instance. Do it frequently enough and in a lot of places and it starts to make a dent.

There's a difference between what a progressive woman searches for in a sexual partner and what she wants from "a man". She wants men to be weak, to be dumb, and to be incompetent so that she can dominate them.

But she's not attracted to that variety.

However, it's how she pushes politics. If you look at Walz incompetently fiddling with guns he obviously has no history with, it makes more sense, I think.

333 325 Into how many votes will that translate? Who knows...probably not many, but I think it will contribute to the lack of excitement among the Democrat faithful.

=======

I just keep going back to Palin in 2008.

The base loved her. Loved her. I hear about how she was the only reason some people voted for McCain.

And he lost in a landslide.

There will be people who have their esoteric reasons for voting one way or the other ("I liked this person's two-step in an appearance on a TV program."), but they're just immaterial to the overall vote totals. It's the one place where candidate quality just...doesn't seem to matter at all.

But more to the point, Walz is obviously a gay man playing as a straight man and hasn't met a straight man in decades to model after.

I like the TV ad where the brainiac girl is taking the roomba apart "again" and the mom says to the dad "Don't worry your pretty little head about, I'll take care of it" and the goes over to empower the girl.

Every ad on TV now is some variation of girlbossin.

If VA flips--and it'll be known relatively early in the night--they'll call off the steal in AZ, WI, MN, MI, NV, and CO*.
It'll mean a bloodbath for downticket as well.

Well, Mars has a little water, and must have had a lot more at some time, judging by the erosion features. Might be a fair amount tied up in buried ice. Mars is barely within the habitable zone, surface temperature-wise, and the gravity and the atmosphere won't kill you, although the latter won't support life. Build giant inflatable greenhouses to grow crops, and live in underground bunkers. People (a few) live in Antarctica year-round.

Posted by: Cicero (@cicero43) at October 14, 2024 10:50 AM (3iMA

Oh, I'm not saying they are equivalent! Painful, horrific death trumps gradual, slow decay any day, all day. And Syphilis didn't wipe out Europe the way it did the Americas.

Because Victorians are weird sometimes, apparently there might have been "syphilis envy" in some circles. People associated the disease with artistry, since so many artists and writers had it. Yeah, I'll pass.

"Due to the extensive list of creative geniuses whose deaths were either caused or speculated to have been caused by the dreaded infection, syphilis acquired twisted positive connotations within European artistic circles during the Victorian era. Through notable figures such as Beethoven, Nietzsche, Flaubert, Goya and Wilde, gradually the belief propagated that the brain lesions one experiences during neurosyphilis – the second dormant phase of the syphilis if left untreated – stimulated fervent artistic inspiration before the illness would ultimately reach its tertiary stage of progressive dementia and paralysis." In his day, the guy and his family business were one of the closest things the Old World had to a Deep State. He was easily the richest man in Europe, and easily had influence on entire nations' politics.

But today? "Pffft, the guy's last name was Fugger, LOLOLOL."

"Look upon my mighty almost-obscene surname, and despair," indeed.
