13 Interesting that the painting feels like depression to me. I usually associate a hotel room with a place to crash on vacation. So not a party but a place to refuel and rest for more fun. This feels very different.

Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at October 18, 2024 09:39 AM (EsZUh)

61 Settling in Paris in 1952, Freud painted many portraits, including Hotel Bedroom (1954), which features a woman lying in a bed with white sheets pulled up to her shoulders. Her left hand rests on her cheek, and her gaze is fixed on a faraway place. In sharp contrast, a standing man is standing behind her and staring at her. His dark form looms over her menacingly, silhouetted against the sunlight. Other windows in the building across the street are visible in the background.

The man is Freud himself, and the woman is Lady Caroline Hamilton Temple Blackwood, the Guinness ale heiress with whom he eloped in 1952 after the divorce from his first wife. At the time they were staying at the Hotel La Louisiane, and the work reflects the anxiety and tension in their relationship, which had already begun to unravel. She would soon leave him, and the distraught Freud, while having many more relationships, would never marry again. [...]

62 [...] This painting is among the works that Freud exhibited it at the Venice Biennale when he was invited to serve as the representative of Britain in 1954, a great honor. Like this and other early portraits by the artist, the work has a flat, drawing-like quality. Here, however, the body of the artist is a black hole, threatening to suck the light out of the rest of the picture. The artist's standing pose also seems to predict a turning point in his working method. This is the last portrait he completed while sitting down. From that point on, he chose to stand while painting. One of his more narrative works, it exemplifies the autobiographical self-absorption and detachment associated with his later work.

138 I live in a rural area. We have a paved road but there are no lines marking lanes. Just a simple county road. It's also a dead end. There's a big circular turn around area at that end.

A giant crane truck just went past my house. It's as wide as the road is!!! Pretty sure it is over the posted weight limit for this road.

The question is... Where is that thing going? Hmmm.... Could be going to the cell phone tower? Or maybe the new chicken farm? Is the turn around area big enough for that?

155 This week has seen the MOST divergence between us and the Left's view of the same facts I've ever witnessed. Someone is going to be very surprised on election night.

TSF Is Losing. He had a horrible week: Looking like a clown for 38 minutes at a supposed town hall. Giving Jack Smith more evidence at another town hall when he said "we didn't have guns on J6' which made him a part of the mob. Barring an appeal, judge Chutkan is going to release more damning evidence against him today.

Turning down an invite from the NRA, what's wrong with him? Harris hit a home run being interviewed by Fox News. Harris will win by 11 million votes no matter what Peter Thiel tells Nate Silver to say.

Emptywheel has a great summary of Donnie's horrible, no good, very bad week of October surprises. Marcy suggests this may be seen as the week that the tide turned for Harris definitively

So why are all the polls telling us the election is a virtual toss up?

Polls are bullshit. the huge turnout in early voting in Georgia is a better tell than any poll. The turnout was more than double the last election and when turnout is high, history tells me that Democrats win.

"Polls are bullshit" Good!

"high turnout in GA is good for Democrats" is hilariously stupid.

What we're going to end up seeing is a bunch of Democrats just...not voting compared to 2020. It'll be a complete and total mystery why, though, with heavier restrictions on early voting and greater scrutiny on ballot security.

We're already seeing heavy evidence of it in NC, PA, and AZ. Republican levels are a bit lower than 2020 in early voting. Democrat levels are heavily lower than 2020. It's not that Republicans suddenly became "we're all gonna vote early". That percentage doesn't seem to have changed all that much. Democrats just aren't voting. Like they're not registering.

Philly can still make up numbers, but there are going to be states outside of PA that go blood red...unexpectedly.

190 Sadly I think they're right about Harris winning. We on the right are all too eager to sit around and sniff our own farts when it comes to observing events.

There have been a couple polls recently showing party self identification, or some other metric of the electorate part affiliation, may be between Republican +2 to +7. That is SHOCKING. If true, and it would make sense, as Biden/Harris are not popular, all the polls showing Harris with a slight lead, assuming a normal +4 Dem electorate, are going to be several points off of the actual result.

Those party identification polls have a track record of being very accurate, and if true again, explain everything else we're seeing in the polling, and predict a very good night for Republicans.

200 190 Those party identification polls have a track record of being very accurate, and if true again, explain everything else we're seeing in the polling, and predict a very good night for Republicans.
Posted by: Moron Analyst at October 18, 2024 10:15 AM (JCZqz)

========

There's going to be a series of very bad polling misses, and it's obvious that the polling industry knows it.

Almost every swing state poll and national poll is coming to 50/50 races. That doesn't happen because NC is going to vote the same way as MI. That happens because the polling industry doesn't know what's going on and is covering its ass to try and be within the margin of error of whatever happens.

There are a series of very, very bad assumptions going into most polling right now, and we're going to be told that polling was great in 2024 because a close selection of 4 or 5 polling firms, none of which was all that close to right, when averaged together, wasn't that far off.

205 We know the polls are all trending heavily in Trump's favor.

We know Kamala has royally screwed up multiple events now which will affect the independent voters who wanted to see intelligence and strength.

The leftist media is freaking out over her performance so far.

Her internal poll numbers with black men is a major concern.

Obama just called all black men assholes for not voting for her, which backfired spectacularly.

Nothing is pointing to her doing anything near well right now.

The only thing she's probably got in her pocket is the cheat. And let's hope that without Covid and mass absentee ballots, it's way harder to do this time around.

Biggest concern I see is the cheat or worse, congress refusing to turn over the keys to the WH to Trump, which is a good possibility.

After that, all bets are off.

He stumbled over his words and lashed out when the crowd wouldn't laugh with him. The rare moments he was off script, he went on long incomprehensible rambles, reminding Americans how unstable he's become. And of course he made it all about himself. That's what stands out to me in particular...yes, they're always skewed for Left, but the last week or two have been more unhinged and disassociated from reality than I've ever seen. I don't think it's because Harris is trouncing Trump so much they're spiking the football.

I think it's because they're VERY worried, and trying to reassure each other with over the top analysis of whatever data they can cling to. I saw something about Georiga early voting was 100,000 people at this time in 2020, and it's 300,000 now, and early voting always goes Dem, so Harris is way ahead!

And I'm thinking...if there's a shift THAT huge, it's not because Harris has slightly more enthusiasm than Biden did in 2020. They don't want to know the real reason, just cling to positive, delusional, surface-level analysis.

The @EmersonPolling tells us Donald Trump has the momentum against Kamala Harris.

So finally here is an example of how polling CAN be useful and provide value.

What you see below allows for a trend analysis.

It is the same poll over the period of 60 days. This is more valuable than comparing different polls to each other because the methodology is similar.

This is an apples-to-apples comparison.

Harris has gone from being up 4.6 to 3.7 to 1.6 to 0.3!

This tells us the very effective roll out, joy messaging, and remarkable convention plateaued and since that time Trump chipped away and momentum is with him.

That isn’t a partisan opinion, it’s what the analytics say.

It doesn’t mean Trump is going to win. But it means directionally he is on the path to winning and Harris must disrupt it.

What are your thoughts?

Will Trump be a train and keep going or can Harris derail?

NEW - American man abducted in southern Philippines
Gunmen have abducted an American man living in the southern Philippines, shooting him in the leg and ferrying him away in a boat, police said Friday.

The victim, named by police as Elliot Onil Eastman, was “forcibly taken” late Thursday in Mindanao, a southern island wracked in previous decades by Muslim insurgencies and ransom kidnappings that have since waned.

A police report said the four gunmen introduced themselves as police officers and shot the victim in the leg when he resisted and attempted to flee. [...]

“Based on the initial profile given to us, he (Eastman) got married to a local in the area. He has been there for about five months,” regional police spokeswoman Lieutenant-Colonel Helen Galvez told AFP.

348 Harris is doing much better for the top of the ticket AND downballot. Not through anything she has done, really...just by not being Biden, and appearing alive and semi-lucid publicly.

Has any poll asked voters first "Who is the Democrat nominee for President?" before going into the rests of the questions? Something tells me a good chunk of voters would get it wrong.

350 Tim Murtaugh @TimMurtaugh 16m
Bob Casey thinks Donald Trump is going to win Pennsylvania.

That’s the only way to explain Casey’s new ad, which ALIGNS HIM WITH TRUMP.

He bucks Biden by name, and does not mention Kamala Harris at all.

An endangered Dem is RUNNING AWAY FROM HARRIS AND WITH TRUMP.

Just huge.

========

And the elite replacing the winner of the Democrat primary, the incumbent, with someone who had the worst favorable ratings of any VP in modern history, has had absolutely no negative effect at all.

In fact, it's only had positive effects.

Sure.

.@elonmusk in PA: US elections need paper ballots, hand-counting, in-person voting and voter ID:

"I'm a technologist. I know a lot about computers, and I'm, like, the last thing I would do is trust a computer program. Because it's just too easy to hack."

"It's too easy to add just one line. And it's really difficult to hack paper ballots."
---
There's a cool story in the Cryptonomicon (which everyone should read), where he convinces everyone that the best way to split the estate is a complicated grid of ranked choices where a computer program--that he codes--will tabulate the results.

With just enough of a nudge hidden in the code that he gets the items he wanted regardless, with the rest oblivious, able to openly obscuring his intentions in the voting.
