First-World Problems...

temp666.jpg

Nope...I'm turning the world upside down. That is a glorious and unexpected delight! Usually I walk into hotel rooms and the thermostat is set at some ungodly temperature that starts with a 7. Awful. Miserable. This shall not stand!

As all right-thinking Americans know, the best temperature for sleeping is cold. Very cold. Hang meat for aging cold.

But for some reason, hotels seem to think that their guests are best served by walking into their rooms and confusing them with the sauna. But not this hotel! I walked into my room and it was a crisp 63 degrees, and who am I to change that!

I might have been a bit chilly!

[Don't worry; the regularly scheduled First-World Problem will return next week.]

Heck, I was next to the elevator and ice machine and didn't hear anything.

Of course, I think it mattered the Horde pretty much had the whole floor and everyone understood stamping up and down the hall wasn't polite.

That is tropical! And you're right, it makes one lethargic to be in a too warm office. The offices I worked in had a central temp - it was set at 68 in the winter and 72 in the summer, which wasn't horrible, but I had a fan in the summer to circulate air that was rather stale. Everyone found a reason to head to the IT office, which had separate AC for the computers - a gorgeous 65!!!

70 I worked in the hibay where they had the LEM simulator that the Apollo astronauts used to train to land on the moon. In the many, many years since then, the company running the physical plant could not get the room to go above 62 degrees. We used to wear jackets in the middle of Florida summer. Our glasses would fog up when we went to the bathroom.

Once a year a crew would come through to do an evaluation and promise that it was going to get fixed but every year they never found enough money to fund it.

72 I have the opposite problem. Hotel rooms are always set to right about 62° in my experience, and that’s freezing for me.

I especially can’t stand getting out of the shower and into sub-70° temperatures. There’s a reason I never moved back to Michigan.

I usually raise hotel temps up to about 75°, then drop it down to 72° an hour or so before going to sleep so that the AC doesn’t have to turn on while I’m trying to sleep.

118 Call the company, just give us the $120 bucks back and call it a day. No, they want to give it one more try. Same result. By this time we've been 2 weeks without a washer and we are running out of underwear. MrTea gets a tube of JBWeld and glues the broken stud onto the motor. While installing the motor, he realizes there is oil on the floor, checks further, transmission is going. The next day we went to a local used appliance store and bought a used washer. End of washer story. Oh, the company sent one more motor and when it came I refused it. The box was damaged just like the previous three. So, we have 3 motors with broken studs that we have to hold until the company decides what they want to do about it.

128 The lab I did my first post-doc was in Cambridge, MA. The owner/boss wouldn't turn on the AC so the place got sweltering got, to the point that ether was not useful for column chromatography as it produced bubbles in the silica gel. Eventually the lady that did the books, who the boss held in high esteem, threatened him with going home if the A/C was not immediately turned on. Before that happened we would all knock off early and go down to the pub in Kendall Square for a cold beer and A/C.
Now in winter similar problems, the place was so cold that we kept our coats under our labcoats. We rebelled when benzene, acetic acid and t-butanol all froze in their bottles and we couldn't readily pour.
Well he tried to save money.
