And because it wasn't painted well, the water gradually infiltrated under the paint, and poof! Peeling paint, which is grounds for dusting off and nuking the machine from orbit.
I have that exact issue on my washer. The lovely wife is constantly griping about rust flakes in her clean wash. I'll replace soon - with a Speed Queen set. Posted by: Tonypete at October 13, 2024 02:10 PM (WXNFJ) 8
Although burning the entire house town to the foundation and starting fresh is a very tempting option.

Simonizing all surfaces of the washer/dryer four times per year will prevent the corrosion seen here. It's in the owner's manual.A little wax and elbow grease will go a long way to solving all modern problems.

We moved in March. In the new place, the washer and dryer are in the opposite position. So the dryer door opened towards the washer instead of away from it.
I finally rotated the door, yesterday, to the right way around. Now it don't latch nice anymore. I could adjust it. Or i could huck the whole mess into the river. I'm still debating. Posted by: Warai-otoko at October 13, 2024 02:14 PM (DDGz9) 13

My brother ordered a refrigerator/freezer from somewhere and the deliverymen left it on his porch as directed. It had a dent on one side, so he called and asked them to pick it up and deliver another. He'd leave the dented on on the porch to pick up. They said ok. Got home from work, there were two on the porch, one with and one without a dent. He kept both and put the dent next to the wall in the pantry and the other one in his kitchen.

when I was changing out the motor on a dryer two months ago I had to unscrew the impeller for the blower and my hand slipped and I cut my palm deeply on the sheet metal frame. I got three stitches out of it, and a dab of glue on my finger where I cut that too.
In good news, it healed well, and may well have extended my life-line in my palm! Oh, and the dryer works now. Posted by: Kindltot at October 13, 2024 02:20 PM (D7oie) 19

GE electric dryer spins and the white "paint" falls off in flakes periodically on or around the machine's exterior seams. Until this piece of crap (a matched set, actually) I've never seen such garbage.
The washer machine's 'plastic' liquid detergent & fabric softener dispenser becomes moldy from the necessary low suds laundry detergent, as do interior seams of the wash basket inside. (Or it could be rust in the basket? 🤷♀️ IDK.) Mold doesn't grow on vinyl so I wonder what strange composite materials were used to make the dispenser, and/or what unusual 'chemicals' are in the costly, low suds laundry soap. Speaking of washing machines, I am in the midst of an experiment. I got tired of replacing my carefully-selected washers every 5-7 years (!?!) so I splurged on a Speed Queen which cost nearly double of any other brand I was considering. I figured I would break even if it lasted approximately twice as long.
So far, so good. (I was under the impression that front loaders were mechanically simpler than top loaders and therefore would last longer. Maybe I was misinformed. But each time the drum would start leaking or seize up, the repairman would tell me it was cheaper to just replace the whole thing.) I cannot recall our family ever replacing our washing machine while I was growing up. Or the refrigerator. Or the range. Etc. Posted by: Emmie at October 13, 2024 03:14 PM (Sf2cq) 94
Another piece of chinese junk I recently bought was a $20 "plastic welder." It's like a soldering iron in which it heats up a metal element, but it's designed to heat little "staples" to re-join pieces of plastic. Neat bit o' kit, as the chinese say. Is it worth it to have a tuneup by a pro? My FWP is I can't get the rail of the vertical blinds to snap back into the mounted hardware. Posted by: PaleRider at October 13, 2024 03:20 PM (UKUm3) When I was in college, I frequented a meticulously-maintained laundromat. The owners were particularly proud of their front-loading machines, telling me that front-loaders did a more thorough, yet also more gentle, job of cleaning clothes and also rinsed more thoroughly. I have sensitive skin and appreciated the better rinsing. They may have had Speed Queens, but I do not know for sure. I suspect this Speed Queen uses more water than other front loaders, but still less than a traditional top loader. So hopefully I am benefiting from better cleaning and rinsing because of the extra water while still being more efficient than a similarly-performing top loader. My 20-year-old Miele washing machine has needed only one service call (to fix whatever was causing it to not draw hot water) ... At the time we bought it, the other husbands in our circle of friends nearly had heart attacks when my hubby told them our new machine cost us $1200 ... But he had agreed to the purchase after I showed him the spreadsheet I'd built showing that the machine would pay for itself in six years ... Each load of clothes would now require 15 gallons of water for both wash and rinse cycles (versus the 45 gallons the old washer required) ... Factored into the water savings was the reduced "sewer" costs which are not measured but based on the amount of water supply used ... The front-loading Miele washer could also reduce the cost of drying clothes by spinning out as fast as 1200rpm (lower speeds were also available for delicate and perma-press fabrics) ... In actuality, a load of our family's towels or jeans took less than 30 minutes to dry versus the previous 45-40 minutes.
