Remember when Madonna and Kathleen Turner began appearing on talk shows doing bizarre accents and pretending that's just their natural way of speaking? I think Kathleen Turner was shooting for some kind Italian/Spanish pidgin language (perhaps she got it from The Paolo) and Madonna was doing some kind of puffed-up RP English accent with Italian-Spanish-French flourishes.

I did say that Kamala Harris was scrambling to debut a new accent. The old front runners were Cockney Orphan and Crocodile Dundee.

I tried an experiment. I assume that tvs and smart devices spy on me so while watching youtube music video clips from the days of yore--you tube kept putting awful Kamala ads on over and over again for each clip. I started yelling at the tv things like lies, don't show me that bitch again, I hate her and any product connected with her, for about an hour of watching clips.

Voila--no more Kamala ads in my you tube feed for the next couple of hours watching music video and concert clips. The stupid ads for Oreos or Taco Bell seem downright wholesome by contrast.

The vote by mail is two things right now: depression of overall requests from 2020 and 2022, and the differences in partisan makeup of the requests.

Pretty generally, mail in requests are massively down, which makes sense. On the other hand, partisan makeup is trending more Republican. Not that they're majority Republican, but that the differences are smaller, like PA going from 70-30 D advantage to 65-35 D advantage.

With smaller overall numbers, a smaller partisan gap, and the traditional pattern of Republicans turning out in larger numbers on election day than Democrats (plus some stuff like low-propensity voters turning out more commonly Republican than Democrat, like what's being tracked in VA), it's looking like a more Republican electorate overall from both 2020 and 2022.

Many more pieces, but those numbers are more solid than any polling.

The part that affects this is that mail in voting was the center of the cheat in 2020.

With fewer ballots out in the wild, the fewer opportunities to create votes.

Assume for a moment that GA and NC get called pretty quickly. Trump just needs WI, MI, or PA to end it all.

GA and NC getting called for him pretty quickly seems reasonable considering the advances in election security put forward by the NC legislature (over the governor's vetoes) and the GA board of elections. And WI, with support from VA's election integrity lawyers, could be a surprise.

Also, I think VA has a chance of flipping. The amount of cheat in VA in 2020 has gone completely under the radar. I know a little bit about it (mail in ballots weren't tied to precincts by law, which has changed since, allowing large dumps without any checks, is one thing), and VA Democrat turnout right now is in the toilet.

I think the polls are in for ANOTHER massive miss. People act like polls have been reasonably accurate over the past few years. They haven't. If you curate them to the best of them, they're still off by a good bit. If you take them all, they're wildly off.

I see no reason why this year should be any different. It's not like polling has gotten easier or cheaper or the incentives to lie have gone away.

I would argue the opposite. Her belief in her own ability far outweighs the reality. She has never had her rear end kicked to learn about humility. Every role has been lined up for her. She is certainly strategic on getting power players into her corner, and I am sure she is adept at screaming misogyny or racism to make people back off from really questioning her. Her loss in the presidential run might have been a clue until she was chosen as VP, wiping out any moment of self reflection.

Polling of subgroups is...dicey at best.

The overall poll will have between 700 and 1500 total, but each subgroup will be, like 100-200 total. It's not a great sample in any statistical analysis for a population as large as the US.

So, pointing at college educated whites and saying, "She's gonna do 10 points better than Biden!" based on such crosstabs is not a terribly solid position to take.

It's why I added that Biden was polling there and didn't actually perform there. There's no real reason to think that the polling showing her doing better with the demo is actually real.

Polling is a giant mess of shit. I really, really wish more people would dismiss them wholly and with malice aforethought.

Well, last week I had interviews for two part-time jobs, both in the education field. I'm kind of pivoting to this since the corporate paralegal jobs are not panning out. (Although my staffing agency has also put my name is for one of those.)

I don't have a teaching certificate, but I did do teaching/training in the military, and enjoyed it. So maybe I can leverage that experience.

Eh, treat them as a mix of misinformation, malinformation, and in need of corroboration via other means like party registrations, how the different campaigns are acting, and so on that are observable.

Triangulation and probabilistic analysis is your friend in troubled times. Think like a lawyer and cross examine your sources--assuming that everyone lies and shades the truth on the stand but they also tell truths sometimes that give the rest of the story away.

What I dismiss is...all of that.

Polling is bullshit because it's hard to do right, as well as expensive. Also, no one has any incentive to get it right. Polling firms get elections wildly wrong, but 538 still calls them awesome and they get the great press.

Betting sites are prone to massive influence from big monied interests.

There's no reason to trust any of it.

We live in an Empire of Lies. Best to treat it all as bullshit and look for stuff that's harder to fake like registration numbers for some kind of tea leaf for what's going to come.
