Wednesday Morning Rant

Anthropology

One of the more interesting things to happen during the aftermath of the 2016 election was the brief passion for anthropology among America's news media. These contemporary adventurers shucked their skirts and suits, replaced them with blue jeans and short sleeves, ventured out of their coastal enclaves and beat the bush into the American Interior. They went on safari into the wilds of Ohio and Indiana to study the natives.

This brief era of "safari journalism" ended as quickly as it began. The news talkers went to the Midwest, gazed upon the natives as a deer gazes into headlights, packed up and went home. They learned nothing. But then, of course, they wanted to learn nothing. They merely wanted to pretend to be open-minded. But if it was good once, it's just as nice twice, and safaris may be moving back into fashion. With COVID in the rearview mirror and Trump back on the ticket, the anthropologists are back out in the bush.

The pre-election safari that stands out so far is from ABC News. No, not that one, the one from Australia. They have launched a special new series that seeks to answer one question, not just about the Interior but about America as a whole. The title of this series? Why, it's absurd of course: "Do Americans hate their democracy? | America, Are You OK?"

The short summary for this episode: "polarization." This episode is framed in a way that probably makes sense to a foreigner: geographically. The news talker stands equidistantly between two nearby congressional districts: Alabama 4 and Georgia 5. These are several hours from each other, but share a region and radically differ politically, with one an overwhelmingly safe Republican seat in Trump country and the other an overwhelmingly safe Democrat seat. You erudite readers can probably already guess. If you said, "I'll bet that AL-4 is heavily rural and that GA-5 is Atlanta," go collect your winnings.

In fairness to the report, they do go over this and the Democrat dominance of urban areas. There are other bits of interest in it, as well - like the statistical shift into "safe seats" for many districts, against historical norms where many more districts would "switch parties" between elections. The Democrats party on in Atlanta, sure of dominance and hoping to take Georgia, while lamenting the lack of reasonable discussion in AL-4, where it is sure of defeat.

The special segment also touches on a few other American electoral phenomenon - participation rates, "get out the vote," candidate campaigning strategies, the preference for strong partisans by the parties, etc. It's interesting as an outsider's perspective.

It also isn't all that good. It's fairly superficial and a bit overproduced. It's also for a foreign audience that likely doesn't know much about American politics, so the superficiality is forgivable. It at least gives a sop to even-handedness and talks to partisans from both parties in each of the strongholds, both "men on the street" and party men and candidates. Superficial as it is and as unlikely as it is to remain ostensibly committed to even superficial "even-handedness" in future episodes (the tease for the next episode is incredulity over suspicions that there may have been election fraud in 2020), it is, as of now, a high water mark for "safari journalism."

Australia isn't a free country and its press is nearly as bad as ours, yet even they are better than the inveterate propagandists that populate the domestic press. I can't wait to see the new American safari programs that launch from New York and Los Angeles if Trump wins in November. Should be a hoot.

19 I'm rereading Robert Ruark's Something of Value, about Kenya around the time of the Mau Mau uprising. The lead character is a well-to-do farmer's son who, for a time in his twenties, is a white hunter. It's a tough life, and you'd better love it.

Somehow I can't picture American or Aussie journalists *really* venturing out into the bush like that, with wild Trump supporters everywhere. They'd be more like the white hunter's clients, who hole up in the local hotel as long as they can before venturing out to hunt lion or elephant.

The continent is about the same size in length and breadth as the contiguous 48 states. So Sydney on the east coast is about as far in miles from Perth (on the west) as Raleigh, NC, is from LA. The real difference, I guess, is that most of their habitable and growing land is nearer the coasts; they have the Outback occupying a big portion of the interior, whereas our deserts are less sprawling.

In a world of communications and good transport, cities are simply market towns nowadays and ecommerce is making that irrelevant for goods. That leaves only medical, entertainment venues, and higher education in many urban shitholes along with the corresponding welfare, drugs, and sin industries. Inner city pathologies are getting so bad that even retailers cannot make a buck and both retail employees and customer are at risk from violent criminals.

Can be fixed but a lot of sacred cows will have to be sacrifice probably beginning with outside rule of cities or a conversion to reservation/territorial status if they cannot be fixed due to politics.

DC is a perfect example as under self rule, despite a few bright times when the zeitgeist was reasonable, have descended again into shithole status. Ditto for NYC.

Neither place, as well as most Democratic cities, have governance portrayed in government textbooks--instead they have crooks and loonies running the show.

Rapid communications gives the illusion to idiots in statehouses and in Washington that they can run things from their capital cities. They cannot.

Same thing in urban cities--the larger they are in population size--the more dysfunctional they are and are a remnant of a centralization rural to city migration for jobs.

Now the industrial jobs are gone-sent overseas, the local governing systems have collapsed under an alliance of crooks and criminals aka Democrats, and conditions resemble the third world in many places regarding crime, education, lack of jobs, and widespread drug and welfare abuse. Many inner suburbs are now afflicted with such as cities continue to collapse in governance.

78 “ "Do Americans hate their democracy?”

The “Democrat Party” has become a Marxist front group. That’s not hyperbole, it’s demonstrably and provably true. Their actions start with the complete subversion of our electoral process. They are against voter ID, they are for mail-in ballots for everyone, endless voting, counting ballots after the election, counting ballots with no signature, and of course illegal alien voting which is a federal crime. There isn’t a cogent or reasonable argument for any of that. It’s about power. Period. They are trampling the First Amendment to try and control the truth and facts that destroy their fallacies posing as argument. That is along with the Second, Fourth and remainder of our Bill of Rights. They have undermined the Constitution by using Executive fiats and unconstitutional federal agency raw power. They are no deterrent by the constant ruling against that abuse of power. In fact their response is to destroy the courts who put limits on their anarchy. They are already talking about how if they win the House and Trump wins, that they will use Congress to declare him an insurrection’s and overrule the election. They want a coup, not democracy .

82 The trouble really started when we went from being a country with a majority of rural/small--town population to one with a majority urban/suburban population.

I could make the argument that things went to shit when the same people who revolted against England for unjust taxation cheered on an army sent to crush farmers who were protesting what they saw as unjust taxation.

Sam Adams himself said that revolt against a monarchy was laudable, but revolt against a republic deserved death.

They tolerate an abundance of non-profits with different tax bases than they, as residents, deal with, but then they get stuff - created, short-term social programs; a little $ for schools, etc. - for or from the non-profits and think they're on the winning side.

The political party power and control can be seen if/when the $ dries up for the tiny non-profits, or the large non-profits aren't contributing as they should, and then it's panic. (Think C19 dollars.)

The way for many decades & has created taxpayers with little sense in many cases.

A bit romanticized about Daniel Shay's rebellion. Daniel and his group decided to shut the courts down by violence and chase tax agents off the Western part of Mass. The US economy collapsed in many states post War of Independence and so did trade--France did not make for the rich markets for Boston traders that England did. So import and export excises declined. Mass also had great debts based on being one of the financial bedrocks of the Revolution along with VA, NY, and PA and a damaged city of Boston and suburbs to repair.

The collapse in demand due to trade and the Brits leaving left small farmers reeling and agri prices dived at the same time inflation roared up from debased paper currency (federal and state). So, Shays and compatriots were being foreclosed due to not paying taxes.

Nearly seizing Springfield Armory which was federal is where Shays went too far and provoked the state government to raise an army to do what the Feds could not.

‘ the larger they are in population size--the more dysfunctional they are and are a remnant of a centralization rural to city migration for jobs. ’

The dysfunction of big cities comes less from the size and more from people who ought not be voting allowed to vote. I.E. anyone currently dependent on government assistance.

They will always vote destructively.

If Trump wins, 2028 is going to be lit. There are a shitload of Dem candidates waiting to run, and it's going to be BRUTAL on their side.

We'll have a tough run, too, as Vance and DeSantis fight for the "new way foward" Republican voters, Rubio and Haley-types fake the funk as more palatable "conservatives", and a Jeb! type openly Establishment loser runs for his ritual public humiliation.

Who will be the non-politician wild card? We've had Carson, Vivek, Trump, Cain...I was thinking Musk, but he's not native born.

149 I'm also starting to think (hope?) that the Dems are realizing that employing The Big Steal 2.0 in order to get a trainwreck Harris/Costanza Administration installed probably isn't in the party's best long-term interests.

Dunno, trying to assassinate Trump and destroy him through lawfare along with the big steal in 2020 indicates that a certain percentage of Dems and their Deep State controllers are so afraid of justice that they cannot back down.

Sometimes a crisis can be avoided like the misguided Hartford Convention in NE during the War of 1812. Sometimes it cannot--like Charles I v. Parliament or the US Civil War.

But, the more illegal acts that the Dems are doing in campaign finance (19 states are now investigating smurfing), outright stealing of Covid and foreign aid, widespread use of government money to pay for Democrat campaigning, etc. makes it much harder for the criminals running the Dem party to step down. They risk and fear justice for what they have done.

That in turn resembles the situation that the fireeaters in the South faced prior to Lincoln's presidency. Too often desperate people double down when they should fold.

Much more sensible to make lab-made calcium carbonate, which is limestone, and use it as building material.

You have to be mean and tell them that a certain demographic and sex in urban areas involved in criminal activity has an outsized affect on murders. Most counties in the US rarely have murders--where they occur are centralized where drug trafficking and other illegal activities occur and by people engaged in those illegal activities. Has changed somewhat with the defenseless border bringing higher crime to rural areas along with their vibrancy when shipped there by hostile Fedgov.

I don't think the one who's main goals was to manage the economy through tariffs, state sponsored capital improvement projects like roads, canals and ports funded by national debt and control of the banking system through the national bank, and choosing which of his cronies best represented his view of the best economic path to be chosen for the country was doing much more than recreating the mercantilist system of foreign control that the Continental Army and Congress spent 20 years fighting to end.
Hamilton sought corruption as a self focusing force to encourage the elites of society to participate more actively in running the economy whereas Jefferson felt that individuals had a better idea of what was needed and would work for their own interests far harder than for some neo-aristo who could steal his life for profits

You're describing '16, '20, and '24. By '28, it will be clear to all that the old way is deader than Steve Gutenberg's career.

The GOPe is like zombie Jason Vorhees or Michael Myers or that oozing anal infection that keeps dripping out of David French's asshole no matter how many times his Paolo tries to fuck it out. The GOPe will never die. It will forever ooze and stink and corrode and poison everything it touches.

Adams served as governor and whatever Shay's grievances were on the economy, if you accept the social contract, even Locke did not claim an extended right to revolt because your personal economics suck. Sometimes government makes decisions that affect people negatively personally. That will always happen under every government in the sun. What you can do though is make sure it is through regular procedures aka law of the land and done by representatives that you at least had to opportunity to select.

Under that understanding that individual economic rights are supreme, druggies would be entitled to revolt because their right to sell drugs were circumscribed by laws affecting their economics. Same with laws preventing whores from selling their wares.

Sam was not a libertarian nor were the Founding Fathers by and large. That is a major glossing over of history. What they were for is "ordered liberty" which means society and government have a role in circumscribing the degree of autonomy that individuals have when it affects others in society.

240 Hamilton sought corruption as a self focusing force to encourage the elites of society to participate more actively in running the economy whereas Jefferson felt that individuals had a better idea of what was needed and would work for their own interests far harder than for some neo-aristo who could steal his life for profits

You mean the way they did in the French Revolution that Jefferson was all in on? Yeah, that worked out great for the little man.

As it turns out, Hamilton was correct. Tariffs and a central bank were very helpful to our then-new economy. As to corruption, Hamilton was utterly incorrupt. In fact, he passed on many opportunities for corrupt self-dealing because he saw it as his mission to get the US economy off the ground, and he wanted to avoid giving anyone an excuse to obstruct his agenda. He was a paragon - certainly far more than Jefferson.

286 Whig, part of the revolt had to do with the burden put on the states to redeem the Continentals at face value after they had been sold to speculators at discount values, which was seen as a shifting of the obligations to repay from the richest (who were agitating for full face value redemption) to the farmers and "western folk" who generally didn't have any cash due to the collapse of the Continental Dollar
Dismissing the rebellion as an over reaction is a bit much, the participants saw it as a revolt against the reforming of the very system that they had been beggard by in the first place.

Is an AR 24/7 bigger or smaller than an AR 15? Is it scarier? Does it have the thing that goes up?

289 As it turns out, Hamilton was correct.

Hamilton was scotched by the Virginia Dynasty from Jefferson to Monroe, and the lapsing of the First Bank
The American system is what we have today, Henry clay's vision made flesh by Wilson and both Roosevelts. It has become a cabal of rich elites running an economy for their own enrichment and power, and stomping on anyone who dares get out of line. This is also what happened in France during the First Republic and the Bourbon restoration.
The corruption is off the charts because of the power it gives to centralize power.
If you are happy with that, then you must be delighted at the power Blackrock holds over your life and your new neighbors shipped in to compete with your kids for slave wages.

290 Hamilton was an elite who sought to create a new aristocracy for the United States, aping all the ills of the British. He only threw in with the revolution when he realized he would lose everything by continuing to support the British interests.

Don't like the man, don't trust his words, and feel he was only looking to make himself the peerage.
If you want to look at failed successful revolutions, look to Simon Bolivar's which was quite Hamiltonian in outlook.

we were spared that for a while.
