The Saturday Night Joke

THE DEAD DUCK

A woman brings a very limp duck into a veterinary surgeon.

As she lays her beloved pet duck on the table, the vet puts his stethoscope to the bird’s chest and listens carefully.

A moment later the vet shakes his head and says sadly, “I’m really sorry mam, but your duck, Cuddles, has passed away.“

The woman becomes quite distressed and begins to cry.

“Are you sure?” she says with tears flooding from her eyes.

“Yes mam, I am sure” the vet responds. “Your duck is definitely dead.“

“But how can you be so sure?” the woman protests. “I mean, you haven’t done any testing on him or anything have you? Perhaps he’s just stunned or in a coma or something.”

The vet rolls his eyes, then turns around and leaves the room.

A few minutes later he returns with a black Labrador retriever.

As the duck’s owner looks on in amazement, the Labrador stands on his hind legs, puts his front paws on the examination table and sniffs around the duck from top to bottom. He then looks up at the vet with sad eyes and shakes his head.

The vet pats the dog on the head and takes it out of the room.

A few minutes later the vet returns with a cat. The cat jumps on the table and delicately sniffs at the bird from its head to its feet. After a moment the cat looks up, shakes its head, meows softly and strolls out of the room.

The vet looks at the woman and says, “Look mam I’m really sorry, but as I said before, this is most definitely a duck that is no longer of this world. Your duck is dead.“

The vet then turns to his computer terminal, hits a few keys and produces a bill, which he hands to the woman.

The duck’s owner, still in shock, looks at the bill and sees it is $150.

“$150 just to tell me my duck is dead!” she shrieks with incredulity

The vet shrugs his shoulders and says, “I’m sorry mam. If you’d taken my word for it, the bill would have been $20. However, with the Lab Report and the Cat Scan, it’s now $150.“ (H/T TNDeplorable)

Chippendale's dancers to unionize. The price of thongs has gone through the roof.

The infamous Chippendales dance troupe at the Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas has announced plans to unionize as part of Actors' Equity Association, according to the Las Vegas Review Journal. It is the first all-male adult performance group to unionize, with a supermajority of the roughly two dozen cast members signing their authorization cards last week. In case the union does not receive voluntary recognition, the performers have also filed the appropriate paperwork with the National Labor Relations Board in order to hold a formal union election as well; that vote would likely take place within the next month or so.

You'll have a couple more days or better to try to spot it. It's moving pretty fast, like a bat out of hell, so it will get higher and higher relative to the that line between Venus and Arcturus every night.

Those of you on the west coast, you may able to see that comet right now, depending. Look to the west, spot Venus and Arcturus, and an imaginary line between them.

The comet will be about halfway in between, but lower on the horizon. I was able to see it tonight with the naked eye, and the tail looked like a smudge. With binoculars, I could make out the tail fairly well.

Once got a sandwich from Firehouse that the meat (but not all of it) and nothing else. That was 14 years ago. Haven't been back even though it is between the house and workplace.
Ordered Big Double Bubba Super Delux with Cheese from Checkers t drive through... Got home and found all I had was a bun and two patties... Ten years before I ever tried them again.

Someone did a juxtaposition of Men watching a strip show and women watching a Chippendale’s show.

Men are sitting there silently looking at the girls and the women a whooping and hollering while watching the guys dance.

I remember being 14 or 15 and picking up some romance novel my mother and older sister were reading. OMG! That's where I formed the opinion those novels were the female equivalent of Playboy (or worse). They should be banned or controlled somehow.

163 I watched the Kino-Lorber Blue-ray of Robert Altman's "The Long Goodbye." Because it's KL, image and sound are excellent. And I think "The Long Goodbye" is probably the best Altman to start with. It has an actual story, that goes from A - B - C and resolves. But it has a lot of Altman's, um, dithering. Highly recommended. Surprised TJM hasn't done an Altman run, though with a lot of his stuff being hard to get, I'm not that surprised.

Plus, it has an orange tabby integral to the plot, and Ahnold is in it. (With a mustache.)

Here's an orbital trajectory simulator for this comet:

Note how inclined the orbit is relative to the ecliptic and the general plane of the planets. It's also retrograde, and comes in, dives under the ecliptic and turns around the orbit of Mercury, then shoots back up and out.

There's a good chance the thing is going to be ejected. It got enough of a "slingshot" that it's eccentricity is just a smidge over 1.0, meaning escape. But that close, the error is high, so maybe, maybe not.

186 Watched the last game of the Savannah Bananas season this evening from the Miami Marlins stadium. They played in 5 major league parks this year, but it's going to 15 next year. Seems they are still on the upswing. It's fun and fast-paced and all the games stream live on Youtube. There were about 35,000 at the ballpark. I entered the ticket lottery for the 3 games they played in Norfolk, but wasn't selected.

208 I was going to do the wheel alignment on my '99 Suburban today, and got the initial measurements of camber and caster done, and decided I needed to reduce both angles on the driver's side. Well, while struggling to turn the front camber bolt, I knocked the gauge off the magnet, and it fell to the floor, breaking the caster vial. Oopsie! I did reduce the camber to about 0.5 degrees positive, and went for a test drive. Has a strong pull to the left on a gravel road, but pretty neutral on pavement.

If something like the "Epstein Drive" from the Expanse series were ever real, the travel time to Mars could be quite short.

The Epstein Drive was some fantasy "fusion drive" that could maintain many g's of thrust for a long time. Exhaust velocity a few percent c, and a specific impulse of a couple million seconds.

With that, you'd just thrust at 1g halfway there, then turn around and slow down at 1g. You could get to Mars in under 3 days.

So here I am, posting on the HQ with a 20-year-old PPC processor and OS X 10.4 Tiger. I forgot how nice this little computer was. Technology used to be fun. This is reminding me of how much fun it was.

At a constant *proper acceleration* (g's felt in the ship's frame), the time required to get to near light speed from the earth rest frame is about 1 year. And the distance travelled from the POV of the earth will be about 1/2 light year.

Note the "coordinate acceleration" as seen from the earth frame gets smaller and smaller as the velocity gets closer to c. That's relativistic mass increasing from that POV. But in the ship's frame, it feels like 1g all the time.

266 Since the search engines have been defanged I can’t find the answer, but here goes.

When we look at the Moon through a telescope in say, March or April, a slightly different patch of observable lunar surface will appear from our perspective than say October? Trying to figure out why Tycho isn’t observable now even though the phase is the same as last time. While the same side of the Moon faces the Earth, there is a little slop or “wobble” l think. Does this sound correct?

Look up "Libration". About 59% of the Moon's surface will be visible over a complete orbital cycle. There are several components to this, optical and physical.

I was also a lot farther south, and west. At that time in April, the Tycho crater was illuminated just right, it’s more near the south pole of the Moon. The first few days of the New Moon, it looked fantastic.

That 59% may not be over a month, but over a complete longer cycle, taking into account the inclination changes over the longer cycle (~18 years), I forget.

You can find some time lapse simulations of that complete libration cycle.

The major houses, like Avon and pocket stay away from the steamy stuff, but the one called "Ellora's Cave" s not anything you want to see in your teenage daughter's hands. It turns out that a lot of used book store with big Romance sections won't accept them.
How do I know all this? DIL writes (mildly steamy) stuff and is hooked into the culture. Did you know there is a yearly henfest called the Romance Writers of America Conference? DIL took the wife one year. Like the genre, there's events ranging from coffee get-together to bachelorette soirees.

277 I work with an engineer that left SpaceX to raise a family after 10 years of busting his ass. He's got a bunch of stock and options and war stories. He's a very good engineer.

He's very convinced that that will pull this off. We have had a bunch of discussions about it technically and he insists that they have everything covered.

We shall see.

280 "You're Next" was a great movie! Remember when I wasn't a movie guy? But this was a fun, very clever, surprising movie.

One of my favorites so far.

It was on a list of 33 most disturbing films, but I don't know why. Gory but great.

And Terrifier 3, budget $5 million including marketing is beating Joker 2 at the box office.

Terrifier 1 and 2 were fantastic. The most shocking, disturbing things I could find without my computer. Beautifully gruesome. Made a ton of lists

Lot of rain tonight. Trumpy left after a very happy night here. Saturday is tuna fish! Went over well. I took a bunch of sleep aids, Trumpy went out but his sister Snowflake came in.

In the new year, I'll be taking care of her too. This is her 2nd time in the house for a longer time. She's exploring and getting comfortable.

Trumpy is on day 12, comes over around 6pm, goes in and out and I trust him enough to leave him alone for longer pieces of time. He gets along great with the dog. He's getting to be slightly less work.

2:14...both cats out.

I hope this gets easier. Trumpy is really great. Night cat. But still. Major adjustment.
