Easy fix

Are you sure it was an attempted repair, and not just a knothole failing to maintain structural integrity?

Speaking of nails, I watched the movie, "X" last night.
Generally decent murder/horror film, but flawed in that several characters do the kinds of dumb things that immediately or eventually resulted in their deaths, and if they'd just exercised a wee bit of forethought/caution, they wouldn't have died. Forget about the nail, it is worthless. Countersink a 2" or so wood screw adjacent to the nail. Remove the nail and fill the screw and nail holes with a suitable putty. Alternate solution: remove the nail, put a couple of "barnburner" matches in the hole and install a wood screw - putty.

When I pulled the carpeting out of my current house (built in the seventies) what was underneath it was the concrete slab (first floor) and plywood (I think) upstairs and on the stairway. I love those floors, by the way. I hate the floors we have in our house, I want to pull them all up and put down reclaimed wood floors. I understand the utility of LVP, especially in this area, but I hate it. I warned when we built this house I hated the floor. I warned that we should just put wood in from the start, because we will end up with wood anyway. And because I would not put carpet in anywhere, this will be a big thing. I was just told we can put part of J’s next years’s bonus toward it, should it pan out, because I was right. Hmmmmm.

The house I grew up in had hardwood floors in the living room. I used to run up the hallway and then slide across the floor in my sock feet. One day I snagged a splinter. When I took the sock off, it went completely through my little toe - it wasn’t a little splinter. I had my mother help push it through to remove it and went back to sliding, cause I didn’t know any better.

The proper "fix" for that improperly placed nail is to replace that nail with a screw. Assuming that your old house has 3/4" thick hardwood flooring, and there is a substantial subfloor beneath, of course. Quickly checked the top. People have said several times "Use the screw, Luke!" The screw has a fundamental advantage over a nail --> your floor will no longer move up-and-down. There will be no squeaking noises. At least from that particular piece of wood.
In general, when it comes to usage of wood in home construction, it is screws over nails. Slightly more expensive and time-consuming. But very little will be squeaking even 20 years later. Posted by: alexander bell at October 06, 2024 03:59 PM (zSCVr) 283

Posted by: Divide by Zero ====== The hurricane remnants ran into a nearly stationary cold front that had been dumping rains for days before in the area. That cold front is why Helene took a turn eastward about 2AM instead of following a more westerly track that had the center of storm between Atlanta and Athens GA. The actual path went over Elberton GA before starting to veer NE and Elberton is very close to the Savannah River boundary from SC. Also nails are faster to install (with nail gun) than screws, and so cheaper. Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara ======= I've installed both ways when remodeling our current house. More important than the type of fastener is the underlayment. Don't go cheap on it and I prefer 3/4 tongue and groove plywood as an underlayment to any hardwood floor and with cement tileboard mortared/screwed over it, any tiled surface as well. Posted by: whig at October 06, 2024 04:16 PM (bt/Nj) 297
I installed every square inch of the flooring here in Casa New Dawn, myself. Both engineered hardwood, and tile.
For the hardwood, I used a 2 in. margin-trowel, and coated both the entire backside of the hardwood strip *and* the subfloor substrate, 100% with flooring adhesive. Not an "S" shape squiggle out of a caulking gun, but full, 100%, every square millimeter, fully coated. Set the wood in place, about 1/10th inch out of register, and then twist/tap it in with a wooden setting block, using a non-marring rubber mallet. No nails to pop up. And at over fourteen years since installing, there's still not one single squeak or creak in these floors. Painstakingly laborious, and slow. But a very highly effective and permanent method, indeed. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim ========= Gluing can work if you want it permanent. As long as your underlayment is level, works fine but as you note laborious to apply on the level of tiling. I used construction adhesive on studs before installing drywall in part because studs today are pretty crappy quality with gaps and uneveness. Doing so eliminates nails popping out. Also useful if you are applying 1/4 drywall over old 1/2 drywall when it is a pita to remove. Posted by: whig at October 06, 2024 04:25 PM (bt/Nj) 299

Yeah, this was all 100% brand new subflooring. Epoxy/OSB product "Accutech" in general areas. Areas to be tiled, the "systems" were tweaked to accommodate a layer of 1/4" Hardi-Backer, glued and screwed to the OSB. By "tweaked", I mean artful management of joist and subfloor construction, as to yield a single height-plane of flooring, throughout the house. This included a double-layer of 3/4" Accutech in the kitchen, to dampen vibrations from passing trucks, outside. All during the rebuild (2008/2009), after Hurricane Ike. Wall-to-wall carpeting was a marketing ploy by DuPont to sell more nylon.
A VERY successful campaign that prevented actual cleaning of a floor and promoted deep dirt and filth. Tile, hardwood, even decorative properly colored and sealed concrete floors, or any hard surface floor material is the way to build with carpets covering floors as needed around beds etc. Posted by: waepnedmann at October 06, 2024 08:11 PM (pBr7I) 303
My first world problem? No green peppers for homemade chili. It will still be good, but missing what I think is an essential flavor.
I don't know if it's true... but I think there was a period when wall to wall carpet was a status symbol, like it was big you could afford to carpet your whole house. It was a newer luxury. But now carpet has been around forever, and it's not special anymore. It's all about the waterproof vinyl flooring now that looks like wood. But I people appreciate how special and timeless solid wood floors are, now time has passed. Posted by: LizLem at October 06, 2024 08:43 PM (QAK8m) Processing 0.06, elapsed 0.0618 seconds. |
