The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Listen to Michael Walsh on the CutJibNewsletter podcast about the feminization of our military, and this pathetic display of military weakness will make perfect sense.

The maniacal Houthis are playing in the big leagues by limiting global trade with their ragtag military and some modern missiles and drones supplied by...you guessed it...Iran! But they aren't a big league team, and the curious inability of the American military to do much of anything against them is a searing indictment of the current crop of political cronies and fellow travelers in the upper reaches of our armed forces.

Another US Strike in Yemen But Little Evidence Military Operations Are Deterring Houthis

Major Gen. Pat Ryder told reporters on Monday that the strike involved 15 Houthi targets across five locations, and those targets included "offensive military capabilities, to include Houthi training and weapons storage facilities." He said "initial assessments are that we had good effects on that."

However, the strike involving Navy ships and Tomahawk land attack cruise missiles follows a year of U.S. military operations in the Red Sea aimed at fending off Houthi attacks, yet the rebels have continued to lob missiles and send drones to harass merchant ship traffic.

A year of operations against a 5th rate military that has no air force and is supplied by a single country, and we have failed. whoever planned those operations should be sacked. Whoever looked at the first strikes and didn't fire the planners should be sacked. In fact, everyone involved should be sacked and maybe the United States Military should reach back into its history and find some retired O5s who know how to kill people and break things.

At least we are burning through our stocks of stupidly expensive smart weapons so Raytheon and Boeing and Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman can sell us some more stuff at inflated rates, far behind schedule!

Shipping data shows that the number of vessels crossing the Suez Canal, a key passage that is near the area of the Red Sea where Houthis are targeting ships, fell by about half at the end of 2023 and has yet to recover to original levels.

Salvatore Mercogliano, a maritime historian and former merchant mariner, told Military.com on Tuesday that despite the fact that "the Houthi attacks are infrequent and seldom effective, with two ships sunk and four mariners killed, [they] have provided enough of a risk to deter shipping companies from risking their high-value ships sailing via the Red Sea."

Mecogliano said the impact has been that “the Houthis have pinched off 15% of world trade, sending the most valuable ships on a detour that has added time, cost, carbon emissions and risk in sailing in the Southern Ocean during wintertime.”

Hah...they can even drag "Global Warming" into this clusterf*ck! 15% of world trade is a very big deal, and the Houthis should have been destroyed in the first month they played their little game

"We're not seeking a full-out war with the Houthis, but we will continue to conduct strikes against the kinds of capabilities that we've seen them use against innocent mariners and maritime traffic as well as military vessels," Ryder said.

Oh good! Just a little war, with tea and scones in the afternoon and no bad guys being killed because that would be mean! let's blow up some empty warehouses and goatherd huts...that'll scare 'em!

There is no other kind of war. Either you fight to destroy the effectiveness of your enemy and cow him into submission, or you fail. Israel proved that over the last 25 years. Accepting some low level war from your enemies is a recipe for failure. There are lots of dead Israelis and many more dead Arabs because the long-term result of a titrated mess of a strategy is a bigger war down the road.

This mess has shown the bad actors of the world exactly how easy it is to disrupt trade and tie up large chunks of a nation's military with a couple of missiles, some off-the-shelf drones, and a few hundred 7th century pirates to threaten shipping. Next time maybe it will be surface-to-air missiles fired at major airports by recent "immigrants." Or maybe it will be a 40' container loaded with explosives detonated in the middle of a major bridge or tunnel in the West.

By not dealing with the Houthis, America and the West has shown that we are paper tigers, and the unintended consequences of this ridiculous, gentle war we are conducting will be far reaching.

I read through the story and the main issue seems to be the wife didn't have her hijab and then argued with Iranian police about it. The specific charges seem to be

insulting a police officer/conscript
threatening officers
disturbing public order
spreading false information

With the last one of the most serious. Anonosaurus Wrecks compared Iran to Fauci here and replace the missing hijab with a mask here and it sounds exactly like the US in 2021...

38 A lot of it is that our government has adopted the concept of "proportionality" - that it would be wrong to make a "disproportionate" response to a tanker occasionally being hit, even if that means that most trade stops flowing through the Suez Canal, which is a major, major consequence.

Compare and contrast to the Israelis, who responded to a single "Houthi" missile being fired at Tel Aviv by taking out the Houthi's capacity to export oil.

40 23 You're not going to end the Houthi problem without boots on the ground. Period.”

I disagree, because the Houthi threat is quite limited. They require power systems and radar. Knock out every power generation facility in the country, then continually overfly the country looking for any electronic signals, and eliminate them. Most importantly, sink the two Iranian ships disguised as cargo ships that continually relay targets to the Houthi. For good measure destroy every port facility completely.

44 I've wondered for a while if the Houthi actions in the Red Sea are actually an Iranian op aimed at Egypt. The Egyptian government is almost solely dependent on Suez Canal revenue for foreign currency. The last estimates i have seen indicate that revenue is down almost 50%. If that continues, it has to threaten the stability of the existing military government and bring the Muslim Brotherhood or its successor back in play. And as to why the West ignores this, ask yourself what US administration supported the Muslim Brotherhood it its attempt to take over Egypt and recognize that most of the same players are in the foreign policy swamp of the current administration. Yeah, it is a conspiracy theory but...

53 Egypt has the most financial skin in the game. The Suez Canal generates (or used to) a huge amount of income as commercial vessels pay to use it.

Yet Egypt doesn't seem interested in doing much about the Houthi attacks, or helping any of the countries that are.

Furthermore, the European countries operating under their own operation (operation aspides, IIRC) and didn't care for the ROE the US was operating under and the overall mickey mouse approach to the Houthis by the USN.

In a nutshell; under Trump maritime shipping and its security was something taken seriously. The USGC had an office dedicated to it. On day one of his administration *biden shuttered that office.

We can trade 100 thousand dollar missiles for thousand dollar Iranian missiles until the cows come home, but that's not a strategy for a win.

Piracy (and piracy adjacent terrorism) are ended both by direct action on the seas and direct action vs home bases. If we're too timid to attack the Iranian missile factories, we can at least attack the Houthi villages sending out attack boats and firing off missiles. Why have expensive surveillance satellites and drones and planes if we can't use them to track where the attacks and attackers are coming from?

81 And what do we do with pirates?

Put them up in a ritzy hotel in NYC and load up a pre-paid spending card?

Back at the high point of Somali piracy, when Somali pirates were being "arrested" and flown to New York and London for trial, one group of pirates was confronted by a Russian navy vessel.

The Russians did not transport them to Moscow, but considered it a fine time to do some weapons training. Unfortunate for the pirates.

Major general Ryder says we're not seeking an all out war with the Houthis. That means the Houthis will keep these simple tactics going and us wasting resources with reaction as opposed to action. All out war involves stomping the Houthis out of existence. But we don't do that anymore

Here's an interesting parallel track. Harmeet Dhillon is taking over the election integrity effort in AZ.
The AZGOP, Republican National Committee and Trump campaign announced Tuesday night they’d launched an “unprecedented” election integrity program.

“We are committed to an honest and secure election system, that counts every legal vote properly. Arizonans, and Americans, deserve nothing less, and we are full steam ahead in our unprecedented dedication to Election Integrity,” AZGOP chair Gina Swoboda said.

Swoboda tells Axios that Dhillon’s new role shouldn’t necessarily be taken as a sign that Republicans will be more litigious or go on offense regarding election issues in Arizona, saying the party is taking “an aggressively defensive posture.

That New Zealand Navy debacle? NZ Navy has 4 or 5 women as Captains and this makes the second one of them to f*ck up the ship she commands. Sort of high attrition. 172 Video of the NZ Navy ship being abandoned was apparently at night. The seas were not calm, but not too wild. Wind was a factor in getting everyone to safety. The cruise ship Queen Elizabeth responded to the distress call as well as another commercial vessel.

The location of the reef is documented on what appear to be commercially available nautical charts. They know it's there.

There's nothing that would be considered an excuse for what happened other than not paying attention to the environment, the status of the ship, and positioning.

It is a bit of a tough spot for Republicans, honestly. The intent behind the founding of the nation was very much based on religious freedom and tolerance, but you start bringing in lots of Muslims practicing sharia in their insular, non-integrating communities...and what do you do? The Republican Party is overwhelmingly Christian...tough to allow other, especially non-Abrabamic faiths, a place at the table when many will view it as sacrilegious.

I think this is best
Politics is the search for a better social compact in my opinion. By definition, that implies the parties won’t see or do things the same way. If they did, it wouldn’t be necessary.
It is as a consequence a secular activity, although an individual’s religious beliefs can inform it.

Correct, but that Heritage paper was used by then Gov. Romney and his architect of Romneycare for Mass. That was then cited by Obama as the justification of Obamacare nationwide.

Romney in 2012 could not take on the issue that animated the GOP in 2010 because he was in the position of arguing that his Romneycare was not the same as Obamacare. Reason why he should have never been nominated in the first place.

Margaret Thatcher blasted think tanks in her memoirs as she said their idle speculations and donor funding meant that they produced awful reports that the Tories and her had to defend against on the campaign trail. She got rid of the official Tory one in her first term as PM.

I absolutely loathe most political donor fatcats of either party. I suspect one reason that politicians hate their constituents is that so many of them that they encounter are slimy sobs looking to get a free lunch or quid pro quo.

Same reason as cops in bad areas assume everyone is a criminal until proven otherwise. When all you contact are slimeballs, you tend to develop a jaundiced view of humanity.

421 371 Is there any particular reason for mp4 as opposed to the usual mp3 sound file?
Posted by: weft cut-loop

4 is one better than 3. Seriously, it has to do with setting hardware and software standards for compatibility by a industry standard settings community. Both are lossy (that is some of the original data is lost) to enable smaller compressed sizes of video and audio files. MP3, to my knowledge was only widely adapted to sound files (can't remember whether there was a video component) At the time, proprietary video standards were the norm but not in sound. Before mp3, wav was the std. files for CDs and it was not a lossy compression method. File sizes were about the size of the CD. MP3 allowed some loss of fidelity in sound for a much smaller file size.

Open standards movement and faster/better hardware allowed decent video compression to be achieved in the next iteration and that pretty much spelled doom for the proprietary video standards like Quick Time, Real something or other, etc.

New compression protocols for video and sound have pretty much shunted MP4 for serious work to the side due to HD 2K, 4K, and 8K stds.

Dharma: the ethical, duty-driven manner of living in cooperation with one's fellow human beings. This path includes a comprehensive set of rules for the "right way of living."
Artha: the pursuit of material prosperity through constructive work. For Hindus, Artha includes not only traditional work for daily sustenance but also the work of government and civic service.
Kama: the pursuit of pleasure and happiness through the exercise of desire and passion. This does not have the connotation of hedonistic pleasure, as it does in some other traditions, but is regarded as one facet of a well-rounded spiritual life.
Mosha: the pursuit of spiritual liberation and salvation. This is the area of scholarly study and meditation, along with other forms of mysticism.

Floaters are the most disgusting things and worst smell ever when fished out of a body of water. Corpses who are blown apart by a shotgun shell at close range are more appealing to the eye and nose.

My neighbor had a deer fall through the cover into his swimming pool. In winter. He hired some crew, in spring, to dispose of the body.

I can still hear the sound of the guy in the woods retching as he carried the corpse away. I stayed upwind, about 100 feet, but I could still catch a whiff.

That's a good answer, provided you can demonstrate that American Hindus still endorse the caste system.

Actually, a majority of them were Freemasons, it was the best way to do parallel contacts in a fairly broken up landscape. Masons require that one believe in a True God, but don't insist on any sort of dogma or interpretation.
Deism is the default expression of that, and it enforces tolerance of others.
