Daily Tech News 1 October 2024

Top Story

Tech News

  • AMD has increased the performance of the Ryzen 9600X and 9700X models by increasing the TDP. (Tom's Hardware)

These currently run at 65W by default, but with a new BIOS update will be configurable to run at 105W, with the 60% extra power giving that 10% extra performance.

You could do the same thing with overclocking, of course, so the only real change is that this is fully supported under warranty.

  • AMD has also released two small language models. (Tom's Hardware)

These are just like large language models, only small. With 135 million tokens, they will run on any functioning graphics card; you don't need an RTX 4090.

  • Star Wars Outlaws has sold a million copies. (WCCFTech)

For a major game release, that's not good. Dwarf Fortress has sold a million copies, but that has two developers, not hundreds.

Ubisoft needs to sell at least four million copies of this game to break even on the development costs, never mind the licensing costs. That won't happen.

Their next big title, Assassin's Creed Shadows, is looking to be an even bigger failure. The company's shareholders are rioting.

  • Google has won a lawsuit against scammers who filed false DMCA takedown requests to remove their competitors from the search index. (TorrentFreak)

Filing a false DMCA request is perjury, which is a felony, but I'm not aware of anyone ever being charged with that crime in such a case.

Here Google was awarded a default judgement because the scammers never responded.

  • Epic Games is suing Google, again, and also Samsung. (The Verge)

Epic Games got a court order forcing Google to allow third-party app stores on Android devices.

So Google and Samsung collaborated to introduce new security features that effectively prevent users from installing unauthorised applications, while not providing any means for applications to become authorised.

Again, I don't like Epic, but Google and Samsung need to be smacked down hard here.

10 Evening and morning for the first of Rocktober to all the satellites of AoSHQ!

I had a tech problem with my smart TV last night; it got dumb, or played dumb, and would not allow me to select the input for "Antenna" (which was securely attached). It also balked at showing the Home Vizio screen and the WatchFree+ input. Kept defaulting to HDMI-1, one of the other inputs, and saying "No Signal." I tried rebooting, turning off and then on, and "Reload TV." Nothing worked.

I got up this morning and tried. It allowed me to search for channels (which it would not last night) and found them, and went to the first on my local roster. I've got MeTV on right now, and I can move around to others. Whaaaa?

I'm guessing Google thinks its too big for "contempt of court" to do anything serious to them. At some point in the future, there's going to be a judge that has had enough of large corporations acting as if they're beyond the reach of the law (other than fines which they pass on to their customers) and decides to make an example by revoking their corporation charter.

"You can't do that!"

The current one is well over it's projected service life and while showing no distress I'm unwilling to take any chances with a sudden leak. Shadow of Ezra
@ShadowofEzra
According to a Tier 2 technician at Verizon, there has been a deliberate and unauthorized shutdown of the U.S. electrical grid that specifically targeted cell towers, starting locally and expanding nationwide.

Verizon has experienced the most significant impact, with other carriers also affected due to their reliance on Verizon's infrastructure.

The systematic nature of this shutdown indicates it was likely executed with ill intent rather than being a simple system malfunction.

31 @25/Mister Ghost: "According to a Tier 2 technician at Verizon, there has been a deliberate and unauthorized shutdown of the U.S. electrical grid that specifically targeted cell towers, starting locally and expanding nationwide."

While huge, it's not as if anyone here couldn't see this coming years in advance. The warning has been repeatedly sounded about how insecure the SCADA* system really is, and ... well, here we are. Expect more of this in future.

Oh, and this was probably a practice run for a bigger event.

This has also has been impacting communications in North Carolina when they really need them. Thank God for the Amateur radio operators (HAMs) who have emergency communication networks up all over the state.

(And this is why any time a large corporation makes moves to take away frequency bands from Amateur Radio use, they should be slapped down hard.)

[*]SCADA: Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, a term encompassing the protocols, hardware, and software that allows measurement and control to happen across the grid, particularly balancing loads and generation which is a very delicate dance.

43 From the last thread, and when I lived in the Sangres, I had, 2 solar panels, 2 6volt 200ah batteries in parallel for 12 volt, and a 1200w inverter, plus I had the small maybe 80 to 100 cc Harbor Freight generator and a Champion 4K generator. I could charge my batteries from the sun, the car, or the generators. I didn't have a big power use except for the well pump.

I mounted one of the solar panels to on the roof rack of my car and could take my battery system with me camping.

83 There are almost no overweight people in Australia. In a week I have seen maybe two people who are observably obese in a week.

There are no squirrels in Australia.

I told the lady at the snorkel shop I am near-sighted, and she had no idea what that meant. Turns out I'm "short-sighted." In more ways than you know, sweetheart.

I can barely understand most people's speech. I have asked more than one person to "please slow down." The security lady at the airport was not happy that she barely speaks English but I felt obliged to inform her.

There is also a union in France that is calling for the devs of Ubislop to strike.

With the leaks that Yasuke was basically a cynical ploy to cash in BLM and Floyd as they tossed out the original Japanese MC plus a corporate culture to ignore even discussing criticism; well, Ubislop needs to go into the dustbin.

93 Werner is puzzled by the arrest of the Montana man for o creating giant sheep. I do not understand why one would
wish to have a race of giant sheep who own massive horns. but is that an actual felony under American law? It is not like when Stalin attempted to breed ape/human hybrids to create an army of beast men. Stopping that was a moral necessity. Werner would also like to see Stalin's face when it was pointed out to the bastard that anyone with a banana could circumvent his pre-Planet of the Apes killing force of any dangerous intentions.

Werner is also reminded of the time when Andy Warhol had the twisted notion that he cross marmots and ferrets, or the occasion when Klaus Kinaki and I had to take out the Goatman when he complicated one of my documentaries, or that time that Ayn Rand and Werner had to confront a loup garpu, which led to...ach, at this hour none would wish to hear the memories of an old Kraut.

96 55 Why do you doubt it? Carter is a Democrat thru and thru. He'd vote for Stalin if there was a D behind his name. Heck, he would vote for Yassar Arafat if he was on the ballot.

*********

There will be once the meat from the giant pigs (that were fed the giant bighorn sheep meat) is imported to Oz and used to clone giant squirrels.

Where does the madness end?

Of course no squirrels since squirrels are not venomous nor carry some nasty STD. They have koalas.
'short-sighted' is what the Brit World says. I never heard 'near-sighted' except in the Continental USA. I'm not sure what Cnadians use eh!

102 The sheep thing seems kind of over the top given all the other genetic hacking and selective breeding that's been going on in the country for decades. Did he commit the crime of voting for the wrong president or something?

Posted by: Tinfoil Dispenser at October 01, 2024 08:53 AM (Ij2uN)

103 As I see this he didn’t clone a dam thing. He used sea men (from the great sheep submarine!) to create cross breeds.

I see this as govt over reach to the extreme.

Posted by: Tinfoil Dispenser at October 01, 2024 11:57 AM (Ij2uN)

105 I dont get it. Every domestic and farm animal on the planet has been crossbreed to be what they are today. What did he do different?
