I skimmed the Horde's comments. Apparently Tampon Timmy did a faceplant on Tiannamen Square. Also, the questions are mostly about muhbortion and not trivial nonsense like the fighting in KEEEV or the Middle East, or inflation or immigration, and *certainly* not about conspiracy theories like people taking shots at OrangeManBad.

26 Evenin'

Eventful night. I'm at my sisters and we get a call from our Mom. A car crashed into my parents car while sitting in the driveway. Parents were inside the house. We go to our parents. A car was sideways, leaning against my parents car. Lots of old trees in my old neighborhood yet this car missed them all. Kind of a miracle. The driver was taking stuff out of her car, didn't use the parking break, it's a stick shift, and gravity took over. It went down hill, crossed the street, cut over the neighbors yard, hit the edge of her house, flipped down a small hill, rolled next to Mom's car. Amazing really. (cont'd)

The neighbors house has a dented drain pipe. Moms car has a dented fender. Drivers car is a mess. So's the driver. She was takin to the hospital. The poor husband was almost in shock. Just started a new job too and had to go to work tonight after all of this. Poor guy. Him and wife have 4 kids too. Yikes. Guess mom in law is staying overnight with them. Anyway, could have been worse. Much worse.

60 I don't know if this has been pointed out yet, but if you ask yourself, what's the most important thing about this debate, you have to ask why did Trump pick Vance.

The important thing about Vance is that we need a successor to Trump. So the BIG thing is this debate is when you ask yourself, "Does THAT GUY, that we just saw debating, have what it takes to succeed Trump?"

The answer to that seem pretty clear, and the answer is "Hell, yeah!"

61 So far no apparent Israeli response to Missile Fest, Part Dieux last night (a**-kicking of Hezb in Lebanon, and ground ops, continue, and a juicy leadership target was offed in Syria). Ominously, and to me unbelievably (as in, I am not sure I believe it and certainly hope it's not true) one "news" agency (AFP) is reporting that Israel is coordinating with the US on a response.

Obviously a smart and effective response could not have the blessing of the idiot children in power in Washington, whose delusional regional policies are an all-out appeasement of the source of most of the region's problems.

(AFP was actually the least-worst of the big wires when I was dealing with them in the region, mostly owing to their stringers mostly being Indians who - unlike the Americans and Euros at Reuters and AP - were not stupidly anti-American and pro-barbarian)

132 >>The important thing about Vance is that we need a successor to Trump. So the BIG thing is this debate is when you ask yourself, "Does THAT GUY, that we just saw debating, have what it takes to succeed Trump?"

That's exactly why he was picked. I don't think it's lost on Trump that he has one term and fixing this country is going to take a lot more than one term.

Trump is the rolling ball of razor blades that we need to take down the entrenched powers that have taken over this country. Vance is the clam, handsome, young leader who can continue the fight after his 4 year internship.

But the IAF's not taking any leave - lots of hits in Lebanon today, and one particularly sweet leadership plinking in Syria (Iran-linked militia).

And the army is active as we speak in southern Lebanon.

169 Want to point out something said on an earlier thread about how the 82nd Airborne division has not been mobilized to assist in hurricane relief. The point is the US is looking at a war in Europe and an exploding Middle East, and the 82nd is America's first response unit. They can have a battalion on the ground anywhere in the world in 24 hours and a Brigade in 48. Right or wrong, they cannot be taken off that role. There are other units that can assist and they should be ramping up. But not the 82nd.

172 Iranian leadership has historically (recent) been more savvy than that found in their former imperial territories of the Arab world. Even then, it was mostly not a high bar. And US weakness and Israeli procrastination subsidized this "success", which mostly consisted of getting away with murder in non-strategic ways. Praying Mantis and a few other chapters however showed that Tehran played a weak hand poorly whenever superior powers got serious.

Looking very much like that here.

And the humiliation of these idiots is real and universal in the Arab world (and region). That will likely get worse in the next 72 hours.

Muriatic acid is hydrochloric acid. Exact same product. The former name is used in commerce, the latter in chemistry. In other words, it's a chemical that was so widely used in commerce and industry, it got it's own generic name.

Praying Mantis and a few other chapters however showed that Tehran played a weak hand poorly whenever superior powers got serious.

Looking very much like that here.

And the humiliation of these idiots is real and universal in the Arab world (and region). That will likely get worse in the next 72 hours.

This has been known for a long time, the other thing is the peak itself is weathering away more or less as fast as it is growing, so it is in a sort of semi-stasis
The other thing is that some geologists believe that the weathering is one of the major elements in sequestering CO2 and is argued by some paleontologists that this or a similar weathering was the reason for the extreme cold eras in geological pasts, like the ones associated with the Siberian and Deccan traps.

229 Tom I'm hoping it's mostly the Israelis figuring out that it's a great time to STFU about their operations. They did for selected periods in Gaza. But there has been an astonishing level of leaks and ball-spiking and other idiocy for months (one hopes the tik-tok on the Haniyeh hit was deliberate disinformation, ditto much of the background on the Nasrallah promotion).

One thing for a fat safe superpower like the US to engage in its idiotic Beltway leak one-upsmanship, another for a small country playing for all the marbles.

And it's possible Hezb/Syria are fairly blind. Not sure Russia has or will devote the assets to give them much granular info on what's going on in the south, and drones may not be the answer. One wonders just what Hezb is using for tactical comms any more, given the, umm, "difficulties" with same in recent weeks. There have been lots of small special operations in south Lebanon going back months. Probably the best prepped battle field Israel has ever had.

267 Wait, how does eroding a mountainside sequester CO2?
Posted by: Dr. T at October 01, 2024 11:37 PM (lHPJf)

"Enhanced rock weathering builds on a natural part of our climate system. As rocks are worn away by rain (or “weathered”, they release elements like calcium and magnesium. Meanwhile, CO2 in the air goes through other natural reactions to become carbonic acid (found in rain) or bicarbonate (found in the ocean). When these different compounds meet, they join to form new rocks like calcium carbonate, better known as limestone.

In this way, rocks help draw CO2 out of the atmosphere."

Some limestone is fossil reefs, and some is lime mud, apparently chemically precipitated without any fossils to speak of. And there are, of course, intermediate stages. 332 andycanuck you probably saw that one Israeli award winner in Lebanon (received his own piece of expensive ordnance, free!), a Hamas bigshot there, was also the head of the UNRWA teachers' union in Gaza (!!!!).

UNRWA was infamous as a slimy pit of corrupt Israelphobes decades ago. Even a return of the Bad Orange Man will probably not kill it (Eurof*gs, Canada, and the usual anti-western trash members always keep it alive). But Israel can, and should - as they control the territory (again). Think they expelled that outfit's rep in Israel a while back.

On the issues that matter, such as economy and immigration, the questions were brief and the bimbos could not run away from them fast enough. Why? Because...

The big takeaway is Vance, who proved himself, once more, a masterful communicator. Even in her sleep she would mumble about it, softly murmuring Soon, Werner, soon will come Der Tag, where the asses shall be kicked and the names taken. Next will come the Bolsheviks. who will tremble before us!

On one suxh evening, we were awakened by a call from the director, Walter Hill. Ayn, said he, and Werner as well if you're there, I've got a problem. That is Fluorite. Perfectly safe to handle. And the mineral that was named for its property of fluorescence. Was the mineral named before fluorine was isolated as an element, i wonder? Fluorite has been known a long, long time.

True, but at one point in production the TP is on a roll that is something like 8 feet wide and 8 feet in diameter. It gets cut and re-rolled to household size. What if the cutting blades are imported?
My point being, a scary amount of manufacturing has been off-shored and we might find shortages in unexpected places.

We kept the fluorine gas cylinder surrounded by bricks so they would react (burn) with any small fluorine leaks. Had a fluorine fire once but very short. Normally metered amounts of fluorine were admitted to the reaction with carrier argon gas. The exhaust, from whatever reaction, was vented to the atmosphere via a steel cylinder (repurposed lecture bottle) full of calcium oxide. Once there was too much leftover fluorine and the calcium oxide (quicklime) was burning in the fluorine.

481 I kept seeing these ads claiming that billionaires don’t pay any taxes, so i decided i would look at those leaked ProPublica returns.

They have a funny way of getting the “True Tax Rate”. It’s roughly equivalent to taking your taxes as a part of your actual income together with the value of all of your assets including your home.

Actual tax rate instead of “True Tax Rate”
Buffett: 18.96% instead of 0.1%
Bezos: 23.05% instead of 0.98%
Bloomberg: 2.92% instead of 1.3%
Musk: 29.93% instead of 3.27%

Apparently, these “rich bastards” don’t pay taxes in a given year because they don’t realize the value of any of their assets and probably live off of the income from the previous year.

I watched the first half hour of the VP debate. Vance seemed self-contained, entire of himself, while Walz kept shifting around and shuffling his feet. At one point he scratched at his right ear -- perhaps at an earpiece? -- and kept looking down at his podium -- checking notes he wasn't supposed to have? I headed off to bed just after Vance got into a wrangle with one of the "moderators" about illegality of our invaders. How do you think VAnce came off?

486 After work today I'll brave the local grocery chain for a few things. Dollar Tree has been out of paper towels and toilet paper the last two times I visited the store by the mall, and it has always been one of the best stocked of them all. Not many choices in the snack chips aisle either, though I don't buy those nowadays.

Might have a pipe tonight after dinner. I usually don't feel like one when it's blazing hot and bright outside . . . but it's getting dark earlier now. (Not early enough for me.)

487 Stateless, you are clearly a cat AND dog person now. The steady quiet friendship of a cat is a blessing. Enjoy it.

494 Now I understand why Trump chose Vance. With his boyish good looks, clear blue eyes, and silver tongue, he's grabbing all of the country's suburban white women right by the pussy.
