US Dockworkers Set to Strike Tomorrow; Biden Refuses to Intervene

If you think food is expensive now, wait until the cities experience shortages.

Dockworkers represented by the International Longshoremen's Association are set to strike at midnight Tuesday, demanding a 77% wage increase after stalled negotiations with port employers. The strike threatens to disrupt U.S. trade, with major retailers like Walmart and Target warning of price increases and supply shortages.

Key Details:

The strike is set to begin Tuesday night into Wednesday, with dockworkers halting trade at ports from Maine to Texas.

Workers, represented by the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA), are demanding a 77% wage increase over six years, frustrated by the skyrocketing profits of ocean carriers during the pandemic.

President Biden has stated he will not intervene using the Taft-Hartley Act, despite concerns from major retailers about the economic fallout.

Why isn't Kamala negotiating personally? She says she can fix all of the failures of the past three and a half years.

Meanwhile, Commerce Secretary Raimondo, last seen calling for the "elimination" of Trump, says she has no f***s to give about the impending disruption of supply lines.

Bonus: CNBC host demolishes Raimondo, who claimed that Trump had a bad economy, and we have no idea what kind of "wildcard" he would be as president.

The Democrat-Media Party isn't sending their best.

21 CNBC: What are you hearing will happen if dockworkers strike and it goes longer than a week?

Harris-Biden Commerce Sec. Gina Raimondo: "I have not been very focused on that."

++++
This is a bad answer, but I have an honest and legitimate question: is it technically appropriate? Where do ports and docks usually fall, in terms of the cabinet? Is this properly a Commerce concern, or is it a Transportation concern? Is it possibly (though I doubt it) an Interior concern?

Raimondo is no good and this was a bafflingly bad answer, but is it her jurisdiction? Even if it isn't, a better answer would have been along the lines of, "Commerce is preparing to assist the Department of Transportation in any way necessary to ensure supply chain integrity for the United States during this labor dispute."

These people are singularly bad at speaking to the public.

Eh, depends on when we're talking about. Unions came about due to fairly real problems with the dislocation between labor value and conditions as compared to productivity.

The primary problem with unions is that they are victims of their own success. Working conditions? Handled, as of about the 1940s (a bit later, into the mid-50s in some industries like mining). Pay? Handled.

But no organization that accomplishes its goal can simply close up shop. Organizations *must* expand, and eventually they become corrosive and destructive when the original ambitions have been achieved. We see the same thing in a bunch of government agencies. The CDC, for example, more or less achieved its mission fairly early. After that, it had to keep growing until it completely lost sight of the original goal and did nothing well.

64 Mentioned previously that I'm in the container business. While prices have peeling back to near pre-covid numbers the logistics have still not normalized. What took 3 to 4 months in the past to move across the water is taking 5 to 10 months. Inconsistency in 20's vs 40HC, 40ST, and new one trip vs used boxes in secondary markets. There are almost always enough containers in the world. However, they are rarely in the right place(s). This will not help issues. Likely screws up some retail inventory for the holiday season. Most freight coming from China will land in Long Beach but with the covid Charlie Foxtrot some were spread around (Amazon for example started pushing freight into Houston) and others began pushing more to New Jersey.

Most political advertising is a waste of money compared with creating GOTV organizations. Campaign consultants love ads because they get a piece of all ad spending which is a lot more than they get from managing a bunch of stinky demanding volunteers. That is GOPe campaigns strategy in a nutshell.

Lot of the ads are appearing on much cheaper streaming channels because the Boomer and Silent TV generation is already set in their voting ways and relatively impervious to changing their voting patterns. Gen X is more GOP leaning anyway so the voter outreach are being targeted at Millennials and Gen Z.

Trump is adding minority outreach to great success as well compared with the typical dumbass GOPe campaign consultants that just want to get paid.

247 2022 From Gallup
"Americans in most major subgroups are reading fewer books now than in the past. This is based on a comparison of the 2021 results to an average of those from the three polls conducted between 2002 and 2016. During those years, Americans read an average of 15.2 books a year.

The decline is greater among subgroups that tended to be more avid readers, particularly college graduates but also women and older Americans. College graduates read an average of about six fewer books in 2021 than they did between 2002 and 2016, 14.6 versus 21.1.

In the past, women read close to twice as many books as men did, but the gap has narrowed as the average U.S. woman read 15.7 books last year, compared with 19.3 between 2002 and 2016. Over the same period, men's readership declined by barely one book, to 9.5.

Older adults traditionally read a lot more than younger adults did, but that difference has vanished, with Americans aged 55 and older dropping from an average of 16.7 books read a year to 12, while there has been little change in the average number read by those younger than 55."

"A port strike could cost the U.S. economy billions of dollars a day, hurting American businesses, workers and consumers across the country," Business Roundtable CEO Joshua Bolten said in a statement this weekend. "We urge both sides to come to an agreement before Monday night's deadline."

The United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) has filed an unfair labor practice with the National Labor Relations Board requesting "immediate injunctive relief — requiring the union to resume bargaining — so we can negotiate a deal," the alliance said Thursday.

The NLRB confirmed it had received the unfair labor practice charge, which is being docketed by its regional office in Newark, New Jersey. The charge will appear on the agency's website in the next few days, after which an investigation would begin.

USMX's appeal to the NLRB was derided..." (More)

You do not have a prezzie but a junta and each of the junta members have different objectives. Biden himself is refusing to be tagged with anti labor. Kamel Toe is terrified of anything resembling governance, the foreign policy junta types are mourning their Hezblowup and Ham Ass friends, the China grubbers are less influential on the East Coast ILA, and so on.

That is ultimately why a depraved and debased aristocracy (claiming it is a meritocracy) is the worst of all forms of governance according to Aristotle and history. Countries with this situation in the past either descend into revolution that shreds the remnants of the Constitutional Republic or they get a despot. Easier to satisfy one El Supremo leader than a multitude of petty tyrants like we have today.

Let's not be too hasty here...these is a brilliant demand. If Harris wins, and inflation stays consistent with the rest of the Biden/Harris administration, 77% over 5 years seems a lot more reasonable.

And, if they don't get it, the nation shuts down right before an election, hurting the incumbent (Harris, as VP), and helping elect Trump, where 77% over 5 years won't be required. Win/win!

385 John Adams, who had both familiarity with the British and French situations at the time, spoke these words at a government meeting in Jan. 16, 1793,

At a meeting of the board for the sinking fund, in a conversation after business was over, Mr. Adams declared that ‘men could never be governed but by force’ that neither virtue prudence, wisdom nor any thing else sufficed to restrain their passions. That the first National convention of France had established a constitution, had excluded themselves from it’s administration for certain time, a new set of successors had come, had demolished their constitution, put to death all the leading characters concerned in making it, were now proceeding to make a new constitution, and to exclude themselves for 6 years from it’s administration. That their successors would in their turn demolish, hang them, and make a new constitution, and so on eternally till force could be brought into place to restrain them.

Thomas Jefferson recorded what Adams said, as Sec. of State. Probably gritting his teeth as Tom had a part in drafting the French Declaration of Rights of Man and of the Citizen.

Good!!!! Israel has finally quit pussyfooting around, trying to make the west happy, playing at endless and pointless “negotiations”. Invade Now! Hezbollah has no leadership, what’s left is just an angry armed mob with no command and control. No match for any organized military.

Miniskirts and free flowing hair for all the wimmens again!

It was made by and out and out socialist, but Persepolis was a good graphic novel about a girl's perspective on the Iranian revolution. Diary of Anne Frank meets Maus, but she survives and escapes. Though the real author, who lived through this and is telling her story as a sorta memoir, didn't get how socialism is just as poisonous.

Iran is only successful to the extent we allow them to be successful. Part of the problem with demonizing Israel, is they have nothing left to lose.

406 From my own reading on revolutions and civil wars, I believe the English Civil Wars of the 1640’s and the Spanish Civil War of the 1930’s are of one type, where a powerful military with what we now call very conservative values eventually asserted control over the old aristocracy and all other groups. The Russian and French Revolutions are ones where true mob rule ran riot and existing military forces sat out, for the most part, resulting in the imposition of truly radical regimes. The US conflict of the 1860’s really wasn’t like either of these, it was a separatist movement by one region attempting to escape dominance by another.
