Before we enter the Prayer Revival, just a few housekeeping matters to go over. (Rulz for those of you in Wakefield.)

1) This is an open thread. Feel free to lurk, opine and/or bloviate away.
2) Be kind, be nice. Please don't jump on the couch.
3) Running and/or jogging with sharp objects is frowned upon here.
4) Have a great weekend!

A special "Thank you Annie" for providing the AoSHQ Weekly Prayer List this week. And every week, week in, week out.

AoSHQ Weekly Prayer List

Please submit any prayer requests to me, “Annie’s Stew” at apaslo atsign hotmail dot com. Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks unless we receive an update.

Prayer Requests:

8/6 - LMD Outer Banker requested prayers for a son who is undergoing an experimental treatment for chronic Lyme disease, which he has been battling for 25 years. He will be in a clinic abroad for about a month.
8/31 Update – The son is on his way home. After one month of treatment, the tests appear to show he is free of Lyme and its coinfections. For the first time in 15 years, he no longer has to take antibiotics. Now the challenge is for his immune system to repair itself to be able to ward off future problems. The clinic indicates that will take about 6 months of healthy eating and supplements. Thank you for your prayers; LMD Outer Banker and family are crying in joy.
9/7 Update – Someone Else asked for more information about the clinic and location where this treatment was possible, if LMD Outer Banker would be willing to post a comment with that information, or let Annie’s Stew know so she can forward the information. Someone Else has a relative who has suffered for years and was finally diagnosed with Lyme Disease. Someone Else’s relative also needs prayers for healing.
9/14 Update – the Clinic is in Germany, under clinicum.st.georg. (The URL is https://www.klinik-st-georg.de/en). It is extremely expensive. The son said for most of the people there it was life or death.
9/21 Update – CP offered to help with logistics of a Horde member needs to come to the clinic noted here. He is stationed in Germany, within an hour of the clinic. He also knows people at the local U.S. Consulate. He said he can’t promise speed, only friendly assistance and moral support. Contact Annie’s Stew and she can help you get in contact with CP, if you are going to Germany for treatment.

8/23 – Grumpy and Recalcitrant requested continued prayers for J.J. Sefton. J.J. is feeling “not too bad, all things considered”. His post-radiation/chemo MRI is scheduled for the first week of Sept, and this is when he will find out where things are at, concerning his cancer. Please keep praying for complete remission, recovery, and a return to good health.
9/7 Update – J.J. sends his thanks for all the prayers and kind words. He says he is convinced that it has helped him get this far.
9/14 Update – J.J. said the medical team is very pleased with his progress, and the next phase is 6 months of maintenance chemo and continued monitoring via MRIs, presumably for the rest of his life, however long that is to be. He also asks God’s blessing to all.

8/31 – Tonypete requested prayers for his wife’s friend Barb. She is suffering from some type of mental disturbance and is a mess.

8/31 – Huerfano asked for prayers for a nephew, FHC, who sustained a lower back injury in a car accident a couple of months ago. He is running out of treatment options, short of surgery, which no one wants.

8/31 – Jewells45 sent an update. She started on Cyremza 2 weeks ago, and the only side effects are really bad headaches and fatigue. She is praying this works.
9/7 Update – Jewells and her husband had a tough weekend. Jewells had a lesion on her leg that hurt so bad she couldn’t walk, and her husband had to drive himself to the ER. He was unable to urinate, and in terrible pain. The problem was related to his prostate.
9/21 Update – Jewells’ husband got another catheter put back in on Tuesday. On Wednesday, he was very lethargic and barely responsive, so she called 911. It turned out his sodium was dangerously low. If she’d waited, he probably would have had a seizure or slipped into a coma. He stayed at the hospital overnight.

8/31 Zibby requested prayers for her brother-in-law, who was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer and given 2 months to live. The family is in shock and Zibby’s husband is devastated. The BIL is the oldest sibling and beloved by everyone. Thank you for your prayers.

8/31 – AnnaS1’s husband died in July, and her heart is shattered. She needs some prayers. If anyone else has lost a spouse, how did you get through it?
9/14 Update – thank you to the people who have responded in comments and contacting Annie to share their email with AnnaS1.

8/31 – Morgan, loyal lurker, just got a new job and is very hopeful. He is requesting prayers that this will work out, that he can prove to be a valuable employee, and that God will bless the firm and its clients.

9/2 – Anderson Cooper’s giant anus has a praise update for the prayer list. His stage 4 esophageal cancer (lymph nodes and lungs secondary) is gone after 6 months of integrated therapy. The new scan is clean. Praise God. Thank you Horde.

9/3 – Ben Had posted that JT is sounding really good and sends his thanks for the prayers and concern. He will be in the rehab facility for a while longer.

9/7 – Tonypete requested prayers for his lovely better half. She had an injury that resulted in 4-5 staples in the back of her head. No permanent damage or serious injury, so they are thankful for that.

9/7 – Sal asked for continued prayers for Pooky’s girl, who is waiting for Lil’ Pooky to be induced (or not), and prayers for her friend J, 80, who could use prayers for healing. J. tripped and face-planted on her patio. She is home, but facing a longish recovery.
9/14 Update – Baby boy Pooky has arrived. Mom and baby are home.

9/7 – FenelonSpoke asked for prayers for healing for C, a member of her congregation, who is undergoing cancer treatment (chemo right now). She has a positive attitude, but the chemo exhausts her.

9/11 – Jmel asked for prayers for her sister, who was hospitalized, and sent thanks later in the day to those who prayed. Her sister’s blood work is looking good.

9/14 – COMountainMarie had asked for prayers. She was diagnosed with breast cancer a couple of weeks ago.

9/14 – MH sent a prayer of thanks for the fire fighters and first responders for tackling the dangerous “Davis Fire” in Reno, NV this past week.

9/14 – Sal asked for prayers for E and her 100-year-old mother, who is being moved into a new care facility this week, that the move will not be too difficult and that she will adjust well.

9/16 – Teresa in Fort Worth asked for prayers for her husband’s coworker, Chuck. He is a young family man in his 40s who received a diagnosis of colon cancer a few months ago, and things are looking pretty bad right now. He had been receiving chemo in preparation for surgery, but now the tumor(s) are intertwined with other organs, so they cannot safely operate. He and his wife divorced a few months before the diagnosis, but she is still helping him out. His two adolescent sons are having a hard time adjusting to all the upheaval. Chuck is planning to sell his house so he can move in with his dad, who is in bad health as well.

9/16 – notsothoreau asked for prayers for a woman from church, R, and her family. R just lost her son to suicide. He left a wife and 3 kids behind. There were no warning signs and R is in shock.

9/17 – PA Dutchman asked for prayers for his sister, Lori, and her husband, Fred. Fred just learned that he has stage 4 lung cancer and there is nothing doctors can do for him.

9/18 – “…” asked for prayers for a friend, “J”, who was injured in a hit and run. He is left with back pain and his arm is numb.

9/19 – Erebus asked for prayers for mom, whose years of suffering from Alzheimer’s are almost over.

9/21 – Commissioner Hrothgar offered prayers up for former (and hopefully future) President Trump, to keep him safe from harm and that the forces of evil arrayed against him and our country be made ineffective and come to naught.

9/21 – Tonypete asked for prayers for the owner of a local diner, Michelle, and her family at the death of her son due to addiction-related ailments.

9/21 – Matthew Kant Cipher asked for prayers for the soul of Alex and Alex’ surviving family. Alex was a fine young man who coached MKC’s son’s youth baseball team for a few years. Alex died in a single vehicle crash this week, leaving behind a pregnant wife and two stepchildren.

9/21 – FenelonSpoke requested prayers for her son, K, to get a job related to his major, which was horticulture. He has been diligently sending out resumes from searches online, but hasn’t heard anything yet. Also, prayers for other morons and ‘ettes looking for jobs.

9/21 – vmom stabby stabby stabby asked for prayers for a young mom who works at her dentist’s office, who is battling a stage 3 brain tumor.

9/21 – RedMindBlueState requested prayers for C, a the two-and-a-half-year-old granddaughter of a friend and fellow parishioner, who recently had a tumor removed from her spine.

9/23 – Lady in Black asked for prayers for her dad. He is 89 and has upcoming cataract surgery. The cataracts are so bad, he is now legally blind. His surgery is 10/1 and he is very afraid and worried. Prayers for his peace of mind, safety, and well-being during the surgery would be greatly appreciated.

For submission guidelines and other relevant info, please contact Annie's Stew, who is managing the prayer list. You can contact her at apaslo at-sign hotmail dot com. If you see a prayer request posted in a thread comment, feel free to copy and paste it and e-mail it to Annie's Stew. She tries to keep up with the requests in the threads, but she's not here all of the time, so she may not see it unless you e-mail it to her. Please note: Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks or so unless we receive an update.

5 Prayer request:

I kept meaning to submit this, but I procrastinated.

A family of missionaries from my church is currently on their way to Kenya today to begin training Kenyans on how to engage in Christian missionary work in Africa.

The son-in-law of our pastor, his wife (the pastor's daughter), and their three small daughters will be in a rather dangerous country for the foreseeable future and could use prayers for safety and success in their missionary work.

Thanks again, everyone. Just finished the first month of maintenance. Amazing that it's just a pill I take at bedtime. 5 straight days per month, for 6 months.

Now three weeks off until the next round, just to clarify. I assume I will have another MRI sometime in the coming weeks. Reminds me that I need to contact my oncologist to see when.

Anyone in and around the area affected by Helene, prayers for safety and a return to normalcy ASAP.

22 I knew I should’ve waited a few more minutes to post.

Willowed:

On most recent weekends Encore Westerns has taken to broadcasting the “Lone Star” production company’s John Wayne westerns. I assume because A) they’re either very cheap to license or free in the public domain and B) everybody loves a young John Wayne.

And man is he young and skinny as a rail.
It’s a big contrast compared to watching him in say, El Dorado, where the little horse he rode in that was almost as big as Wayne.

The plots are barebones and the acting stiff, but still entertaining in a quaint way.

“Randy Rides Alone” on now, with “The Trail Beyond”, where Wayne goes to Canada to fight off French-Canadian outlaw kidnappers, up next at 9 a.m. EDT.

Yup, eventually a stadium was built with his name, now sadly gone. To see a baseball hit over the top of the right field wall/scoreboard was amazing. It was fun to watch the scores change on the scoreboard, occasionally you could see the person who was changing the numbers. Ah, technology back then.

31 What has been happening in Lebanon is truly astounding, and the most enjoyable part is that it’s the opposite of what EVERYONE predicted. (Well except for Bibi, who’s smiling like the cat who ate the canary). I’m having a bit of fun searching out old predictions of disaster for Israel if they messed with Hezbollah - but even none of Israel’s friends could have predicted a victory this stunning, this fast!
Of course at this point it’s still a strategic victory, it will take time to make it a tactical victory. But Hezbollah has now been reduced to an angry, still armed but leaderless mob. Dangerous to civilians but no match for any disciplined military forces.

I hope it goes well for them. One of the chaplains in my squadron transferred out because his family was doing mission work in the Pacific islands.

I think evangelization is important, but I don't think uprooting families and making them involuntary participants is the way to go. Maybe it's just the popular culture, but a lot of vocal apostates seem to be the children of missionaries.

I also think that where we are right now, we need more missionaries in the US. The country is re-paganizing at a frightful pace. A lot of our social problems would go away if we had levels of faith like those in the 1950s.

Yup, eventually a stadium was built with his name, now sadly gone.

The stadium was built in 1908 and was named Shibe Park, after co-owner Ben Shibe. In 1938, the Phillies also played there.

After Mack retired, it was renamed Connie Mack Stadium. The Phillies purchased the stadium (reluctantly) and used it until 1970.

Prayers up for those that know they need them but have not asked us for them;
Prayers up for those that need them but don’t know it yet; and
Prayers up for those who pray alone, asking for help in silence, and whose prayers are known but to God!

Prayers up even for all "our" politicians who have apparently decided that the 10% graft and power are far more desirable than honor or integrity, may they see the error of their ways and repent!
And lastly, prayers up for former (and hopefully future) President Trump, keep him safe from harm and may the many forces of evil arrayed against him and our country be made ineffective and come to naught!

And bless all the families, Morons, and friends impacted by this vicious destructive storm.

The reason Israel has turned things around is that they've stopped listening to the hypocrites who demand absolute moral perfection from Western militaries while excusing the crimes and atrocities of our enemies.

Whenever someone brings up Israel doing something naughty, I cut them short by asking what Hamas' or Hezbullah & etc. use for uniforms. What are their ranks? What units do the field?

Uniforms and ranks and units are there to protect civilians. If you don't use them, you want civilians to die. The reason why civilians losses in Ukraine are so much lower is that both sides do this. It's pretty simple stuff.

54 Good morning everyone! Praying for all, especially those in specific need, but also generally. What a difference time and God (but especially God) has made for me. Maintaining gains, maintaining positive outlook, slowly, gently cultivating a relationship with a remarkable woman. Did have a bit of a relapse yesterday, a moment of bitterness. Daily Bible verse and prayer (online) miraculously on target, reminded me to love and trust him. Yesterday was autistic son’s birthday and youngest daughter’s last week. I brought him home from his group home and she’s home for the weekend (evacuated from school for hurricane). Just brought on negative feelings towards the one who abandoned us (especially them- I’ve moved on, but they’ll never have another mother and she’s forgotten them, made no contact with either). We are commanded to love and forgive each other, and I’m trying, but it’s been difficult and I certainly failed. Every day I count down from 490 whenever I catch myself being bitter or arguing with “ghosts.” Nowadays I rarely get below 485, mostly just feel pity if I think of her at all, but yesterday was tough. Today, however, is a new day, and I trust Him to give me daily bread.

Prayers up for those that know they need them but have not asked us for them;
Prayers up for those that need them but don’t know it yet; and
Prayers up for those who pray alone, asking for help in silence, and whose prayers are known but to God!

Forgiveness is difficult, especially when we ask too much of ourselves and seek to do it too soon. Especially early on, it is important to explore one's feelings and think about why things happened, what we could have done differently, and also accept that what is done is done.

A big part is just moving on and filling that space with other things, which gradually push out the old anger because you've replaced it with new joy.

For me, forgiveness doesn't really happen until I've moved on and have some distance from what happened.

In 1969, the Mets were coming from behind and were in the process of catching and passing the Cubs, who were in first place most of the year. Cubs were visiting the Mets at Shea Stadium, when a black cat came out from under the stands, stood in front of the visitors dugout, and stared at Leo Durocher for a few seconds. The Mets swamped them from that time on and the Cubs folded. It's an important part of Mets lore since.

While The Chosen does interject speculation in order to tell a story, the treatment of Jesus is well done. There is no doubt that He is the Word Made Flesh.

Every time Jonathan Roumie is on the screen, his presence is riveting. I've heard him speak in person and seen several interviews. In all cases, he thanks God for being given the gift of portraying Jesus Christ. Roumie states that it is very humbling for him to be approached by people telling him that he changed their life, and seeing his image on devotional materials.

Civilized, affluent people have to be pushed into wartime thinking. There's also a reluctance on the part of elites to do this because other, more traditional beliefs will re-emerge, like how wars require serious military organizations, not armed Human Resources departments bedecked with rainbow flags.

Most importantly, the chaos of combat remind us that of how little we control, and that our present prosperity and freedoms are fragile, and perhaps there is a greater power sustaining us that we have all but forgotten?

Never forget that Dubya's response to the War on Terror was to tell us to go the mall, not go to church.

155 Whenever someone brings up Israel doing something naughty, I cut them short by asking what Hamas' or Hezbullah & etc. use for uniforms. What are their ranks? What units do the field?

------

I was recently talking to someone who was mouthing the usual weak Western crybullying tropes... " Oh, look at the devastation, this can't continue, Israel must surely agree to a ceasefire at some point soon, to stop the carnage blah blah."

I told her "they do not have to. They may or may not do so, but they don't have to. You're only seeing it this way because all you've known is the American way of war, and we're the only country who does it this way, and it's why we haven't won one in close to century - we're the only people who pretend this thing can be humane.

War is never pretty, but if you want to see the most hideous face of it, pit two opponents with an iron will to victory against each other. Because they don't roll up shop and go home when Walter Cronkite tells them to.

You're seeing an actual, really bad war, and you're not getting it because you don't have the frame of reference to understand people who need to win, and that's both sides here."

You are absolutely correct. The success of the television show, The Chosen is showing that there is a void to be filled. Jonathan Roumie is becoming a very articulate proponent of the Catholic Church, and taking the message of Jesus Christ's salvific sacrifice to unexpected places.

There is a growing realization that the happy-clappy Catholic Church of the 1970s has been a failure. I'm chairman of my local parish's Worship Commission and at a local meeting, I stated that we needed to examine why former congregants weren't coming to Mass. One of the responses was that those people no longer believed in the True Presence of Christ in the Eucharist.

I answered why should they: there is nothing to usher them into a sacred space (walking into this church building feels like walking into an office building), and the supernatural is not promoted.

Honestly, I thought Israel was never going to take the measures the Oct 6 attack required.

The number one job of any gov't is to protect its citizens. (A job now forgotten by the current US gov't)

After a senseless, animalistic attack like Israel experienced, it is incumbent on the leader to bring as much pain, violence, horror, and death to the attackers, their countrymen, and their supporters and anyone within sniffing distance of these folk as is humanly possible,

until they unconditionally surrender and the thought of attacking you again is simply painful to consider when you know what will follow.

Good for Israel for finally taking their number one job seriously.

I'm very pleased at the direction our diocese is taking, and the efforts to restore the church interiors, filling them with sacred images, icons and creating a sense of awe.

I know some here may have issues with that, but there are times during the Mass when my mind wanders, the distractions of the world try to intrude, and having the Holy Family or Our Lady of Guadalupe or the image of Divine Mercy at hand suddenly refocuses my thoughts.

There is also a sustained effort for people to receive the Eucharist on the tongue and I have started to do so (remember, I'm a convert, so was taught to receive it in the hand). People are embracing it, which is great.

This is a spiritual conflict and the battle lines are becoming very obvious to those with eyes to see. Just look at what the Lefties want: unlimited abortion, and elimination of "surplus" population to "save da Erf (tm)."

If you don't have any scruples against killing unborn babies, you have no scruples against killing anyone you regard as inconvenient. Now the Lefties are getting spun-up on the problem of those pesky Jews, and are seeking a Final Solution.

Oppression of Jews is always a leading-indicator of bad stuff coming down the pike. The Lefties get all worked up about the Spanish Inquisition but have no idea that it started as a means to root-out Jews that had insincerely converted to Christianity.

Even though I hadn't planned to, I pulled in -- and saw that the pump read $3.49. Either they haven't bothered to update the pumps to match the sign, or it's a bait-and-switch.

No point in asking the staff about the discrepancy. They speak as little English as they can get by with. My kittens understand more English words.

My take is that the Establishment is bailing on her because she and Walz are too stupid to be good puppets. Biden was obedient but went senile. Harris doesn't understand that she's owned. She really thinks that everything she has was earned by her own merits, which is why she wants to impose price controls on housing and stuff.

The opposition to religious art is a form of Manicheaism in which the physical is regarded as inferior, or bad, as compared to the spiritual.

My pastor gave a recent homily in which he stated that the preferred method of receiving the Eucharistic host was upon the tongue.

I had less resistance from the octogenarians in the Worship Commission than I expected when I stated that we needed more reverent Communion and the church building needed to be foster a more reverent environment.

Sometimes I put a big dollop of butter in the pan, melt it, and then sort of sop it up with the bread when making grilled sandwiches. Saves time and effort. Besides, the butter is hard as a rock if it hasn't been sitting out.

I tend to think a better result is achieved by spreading soft butter on the bread first, with a knife, despite the laborious effort required*

The pitch they are using here is that it is more certain (less risk of it being dropped), more reverent, and faster.

I've found all three to be true. My old parish across town is almost finished with its restoration to pre-Vatican II layout, complete with Communion rail. A friend of mine who recalls those days said they didn't need extraordinary ministers because the priests were able to do just go up and down the line.

265 As a dedicated cro-magnon, I can authoritatively state a passable toast can be effected merely by placing the bread on the coils of an electric burner style stove or range.

Alternatively, those with gas (no jokes pliz) can accomplish this task with a little ingenuity, and perhaps a coat hanger or wire device. Coleman co. sells these little toasters for the 2 burner suitcase stoves that actually work pretty well.

A dedicated Toast Enthusiast might find relief with a propane torch and some patience. Hand Crafted Artisanal Toast!

My wife got one, but is too nervous to use it. She's also going through a desolation (it happens) and with the grandkids here, I'm usually there alone, though my daughters tag along when the mood strikes them.

I get it, I was young and stupid and didn't enter the Church until I was 33. They're doing much better than I was, so I give them space.

275 good morning! have to head out for weekend FH soon - interesting news on that front - yesterday the LaSalle-SLU had to be stopped due to a massive shooting nearby.

yay Philly! well done!

the worst part is LaSalle was using the Temple field b/c their field is getting torn up to make a new basketball stadium on their (also ghetto) campus. Those poor girls. that's a lot of travel every day to get from Ghetto A to Ghetto B to play/practice.

when we were being courted by Drexel there was a shooting/lockdown during the play day - middle of the afternoon. yeah sorry that decided that. So, another field in a dangerous spot. Penn's isn't great shakes either!

the data is WRONG. crime here is CRAZY.

also WP sucks and I hope they finally die.

Depends on the parish. At my "hippy" parish, very few veils (mainly young women). At the local Latin Mass parish, almost all women and girls wear chapel veils.

I expect that the use of chapel veils will increase as the old generations die-out, and the younger Catholic become more prominent in their parishes.

280 When the 70s inflation took off in earnest (and this was in Iowa!) dairy butter was off the menu. Margarine it was. Mom couldn't abide margarine, but we were forbidden to use her stash.

Meal times were pretty regimented, and looking back I understand why now. Orange Juice was rationed or issued in those teeny glass tumblers, the kind Cheese-Whiz was offered in those days. It wasn't Depression era poverty in no way, but .... Welfare in those days was still a dirty word, even with Democrats. Nobody was on the dole, nobody was being paid not to work.

When I was a younger lad and served as an altar boy in our Episcopal parish, the minister was prone to preparing and blessing more of the wine for communion than was needed for the number of parishioners at the service. It was not unusual for him to down a healthy belt (please excuse my crassness) of said wine after all had partaken of the Lord's Supper.

That said, it was not great surprise when both he and his wife checked into rehab to dry out several years later.

You accept the risk that it may happen, but "accepting the risk" loses its vagueness when it actually does happen.

Bugging out in the middle of the night due to an approaching hurricane, only to return in a couple of days to find your home pretty much obliterated is a train wreck on one's emotions.

But, then, once you get past that, a totally different mindset kicks in as you go about the rebuilding process, at least for mission-oriented people.

After that, "accepting the risk" turns into "law of averages says it won't happen again..."

BUT, women should cover their hair in the presence of God. See the passion of the Christ when Mary Magdelen instinctively covers her hair with her veil when Christ passes. Instructive.

There is also a sustained effort for people to receive the Eucharist on the tongue and I have started to do so (remember, I'm a convert, so was taught to receive it in the hand). People are embracing it, which is great.
Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at September 28, 2024 09:43 AM (llXky)

_________

If, as a Catholic, you take things seriously, you believe that even the tiniest particle of the Eucharist contains the whole of the Body and Blood of Christ. Therefore, Communion and how the Host is handled are very serious matters.

After Communion, the priest performs the Ablutions, first rinsing the chalice and receiving it, then having the fingers with which the Host was handled washed and received. This turns the hand back to "normal" use and means that no trace of the Host has not been received.

There are two problems with Communion in the hand. One is the increased danger of inadvertent profanation of the Host. The other is that the recipient has no recourse to purify his fingers (or hand). The problem with Extraordinary Ministers is that almost no one receives on the tongue in the Novus Ordo Mass and thus the ministers don't know how to place it.

That was before the big push, so mostly it was served in the hand. Now it's not quite 50-50 but that depends on which Mass. The daily Mass I attended on Tuesday had almost everyone receive it on the tongue.

It's true. Toast must be buttered during that brief time period right after toasting, while it is still hot and still yet retains some residual moisture. Otherwise, a dry crunchy toast. Common in Diners, who get a pass because of the volume of product.

Ivan destroyed my house while it was under construction in 2004. Only the framing was up at the time. All the lumber blew into the water with only the concrete pad remaining. No big deal, as they weren't that far into the build.

Sixteen years later, to the day, Sally's winds beat it up and the storm surge flooded it.

I'm not sure if the next one will be the third time or only the second, since I wasn't living in it when Ivan hit.

I used Knoxville as a starting point to find I40, where the road collapsed, and there is/are dam(s) in TN that if broken would flow into Western NC. Things are a little less then definitive if the dams broke, but they were certainly topped. Ventusky had kinda predicted the HC would travel north then stall over that area.

But if your toast is a lovely baked bread, home made, or from some neighborhood bakery? Cutting off the crust would be like dating Sydney Sweeney and suggesting she cut off her nipples.

400 [shouting:] You cannot petition the Lord with prayer! -Jim Morrison, noted theologian and flasher

Going in for minor surgery on Monday morning. I've been bothered for quite a while by a lower eyelid that curls inward, so the eyelashes are constantly irritating the eyeball. Just a little snip and stitch, a quick outpatient procedure, they tell me.

Of course, there is no guarantee. Risks involve unbalanced appearance, bleeding, infection, double vision, dry eye, numbness, loss of vision, anger, anxiety, depression, and, of course, death.

The alternative is living with the symptoms and appearance of droopy, saggy lower lid, with tearing, red eyes, and mucous discharge.

Heh. Life is full of choices, eh?

I put this off a year ago, being wary of surgery. Shortly thereafter I had major bowel surgery, and another major operation six months later. So, this doesn't seem like such a big deal now!

Prayers welcome, for successful snippage, quick recovery, and what we really need prayers for is that we can get there on time. It's an 8am appointment and we live an hour and a half away, so that should be "fun."

Prayers! I know you'll find relief.

this brings back memories. When I lived in LA 25 years ago, I briefly fostered what I thought was an injured/possibly abused liver-spotted Dalmatian who was wandering the neighborhood. Long story short, he was suffering from that same eyelid condition, and quite a bit of my own money later, the vets operated on his lids, and he then went on to a very happy long life up in a home in Topanga Canyon.

425 I will also bring up that commercial bread toasts easier than home-made because of the sugar the bakers put into commercial bread to keep it softer. The additional sugar absorbs moisture and keeps the bread from going dry and stale longer, and also caramelizes better, at lower temperature.

Home made bread, at least mine, is made without sugar so all the browning is done via Maillard reaction alone, with reduced sucrose sugars so there is no additional caramelization, so it takes more energy. I honestly thought the really nice toaster I got for Christmas one year was a lemon since it was crappy at toasting my bread

I saw one of those old kind of A-frame toasters in an antique shop a few weeks ago. Complete with the frayed fabric covered cord and Bakelite plug. No timer or rheostat of course. I kind of hate that stuff from my mom's kitchen are now "antiques."

It's one of those things that proves the power of God and how sensitive people possessed by evil are to it.

Look at the absurd arrests of people praying silently at abortion mills in England. No outward sign, just standing there, thinking about God. The only way anyone knows is when they are asked what they are doing and tell the truth.

That's now a crime.

If that doesn't prove the efficacy of prayer, I don't know what would.
