Gallup: The Polling Environment Is Very Favorable to Republicans

I haven't been covering the polls because a lot of them favor Kamala. Not all of them. There's not a clear advantage, really.

But this Gallup polling is interesting.

Gallup finds that its proxies for voter intention -- stuff like party identification, or answers to questions like "which party is better able to handle the most important issues?" -- all point to a Republican win (or, in a few cases, show no advantage for either party).

Nearly all Gallup measures that have shown some relationship to past presidential election outcomes or that speak to current perceptions of the two major parties favor the Republican Party over the Democratic Party. Chief among these are Republican advantages in U.S. adults' party identification and leanings, the belief that the GOP rather than the Democratic Party is better able to handle the most important problem facing the country, Americans' dissatisfaction with the state of the nation, and negative evaluations of the economy with a Democratic administration in office.
The following is a review of these key measures in 2024, primarily from a Sept. 3-15 Gallup poll, compared with the same measures in past presidential election years.

Here's the big one: Which party do you identify with?

Right now, we're in one of those rare situations where more people say they're Republican than Democrat.

More U.S. adults identify as Republican or say they lean toward the Republican Party (48%) than identify as or lean Democratic (45%). Those figures are based on an average of Gallup polls taken during the third quarter (July to September) to minimize poll-to-poll variation in party identification estimates and to provide more reliable comparisons across presidential years given the different timings of the two major party conventions in July, August or September.
Party affiliation and voting are strongly predictive of individuals' vote choices, with the vast majority of identifiers and leaners voting for the candidate of their preferred party. At the aggregate level, there are typically more Democrats and Democratic leaners than Republicans and Republican leaners in the U.S. adult population. Democrats have won presidential elections in years in which they had larger-than-normal advantages in party affiliation, including 1992, 1996, 2008, 2012 and 2020.
In years when the advantage was narrower -- 2004 and 2016, for example -- Republicans won in the electoral college if not also the popular vote.
Republicans previously have not had an outright advantage in party affiliation during the third quarter of a presidential election year, and they have rarely outnumbered Democrats in election and nonelection years over the past three decades.

Three separate measures of party performance on issues favor the Republican Party by at least a modest margin.
By 46% to 41%, Americans say the Republican Party is better able than the Democratic Party to address what they think is the most important problem facing the country. The top issues Americans currently name as the most important are ones that tend to favor the GOP, including the economy (24%), immigration (22%), the government (17%) and inflation (15%).
This measure has been highly predictive of election outcomes in Gallup trends dating back to 1948. The party rated as better at handling the most important problem has won all but three presidential elections since that year. The question was not asked in 2000, and the two parties tied in 1980, when inflation was the top issue. The only time the measure was out of sync with the outcome was in 1948, when Americans believed the Republican Party was better able to handle the most important problem (international issues) but returned Democratic incumbent Harry Truman to office.
Gallup also tracks perceptions of which party can best handle economic and international matters, broadly. Americans currently give the Republican Party a six-percentage-point edge, 50% to 44%, as the party they think would do a better job of keeping the country prosperous. Gallup has asked this question since 1951. In 16 presidential elections since then when one party has had at least a minimal advantage on this measure, that party has won 12 times. The exceptions were 1952, 1968, 1980 and 2000. The question was not asked in 2004, and the parties were tied in 1956.
Republicans hold a more substantial advantage of 14 points (54% to 40%) as the party Americans believe is better able to keep the nation safe from terrorism and other international threats. Republicans have led on this question all years it has been asked (dating back to 2002) except 2007 and 2012.
Gallup has a limited history of asking this question in presidential election years. The 14-point Republican lead this year is larger than in any previous presidential election year. The prior highs were seven points in 2008 (a year Republicans lost) and 2016 (a year Republicans won). In 2012 (when the parties were tied) and 2020 (when Republicans had a four-point advantage), the Democratic candidate won the presidential election.

And it gets worse: Consumer confidence just plunged the most in three years.

Why it matters: It's not just monetary policy officials who are worried about a labor market slowdown. Consumers became more pessimistic about the economy this month than in years past -- largely because of a darkening outlook on employment.

What doesn't jive is every other poll seems to point to Trump winning easily, until you get to the actual head to head poll.

If every Trump supporters (especially in swing states) persuades one traditional non-voter to mail in a vote for Trump, it's game over.

I'm working on one now.

Don't try to flip a Democrat. Too late for that. Find one traditional non-voter who leans toward Trump and guide them in personally.

We need to pull Trump across the finish line.

My impression:

Or, more simply: One is a defensive campaign and the other is offensive. In a "change" election ....

94 Any reputable poll has seen Trump's strength for quite some time. But there was a rush of polling flooding for Harris to prop her up. It has been deteriorating since the dem convention. When CNN and NYT/Siena start calling it even or plus or minus one, you know the dem is in trouble. And if you look at all the underlying metrics everywhere - she's losing independents, she isn't winning the youth vote, young men are running away from her, men in general are running away from her mitigating the advantage she has with unmarried college educated women, black men and hispanics are moving toward Trump. There was no way this was ever a +5 Harris race. Quinnipiac (sp?) dropping a Trump +1 today has to be a backbreaker.

The steal is still a concern. But Harris is toast without extra-voting help.

It is called "tacit approval" and it is used in a lot of really shady places, often to excuse not giving the consumer any ability to object.
The classic argument is that if you cannot run away far enough and fast enough from your someone who is assaulting you, you give tacit approval and bear the responsibility for what happened since it was consensual.

Harris' path requires she wins PA. SO they are hitting eastern PA like crazy - they are not in the western half of the state. Pittsburgh doesn't appear to be of much help to her. She needs Philly and the east. They of course make appearances elsewhere, but they have almost given up the southwestern swing states - and Georgia with manual counting is done - the Georgia legislature has Kemp's nuts in a vice. He plays nice he gets to run for senator in 26. He doesn't, he's done. NC is not in play and never has been. It's the three midwestern swing states. She needs them all, and is fighting fires in at least two of them. She has to have PA or there is no path to a win. And it sounds like its gotten even narrower - she needs eastern PA.

HOWEVER, I keyworded "High Schools registering voters". It's not an isolated incident. In PA there are competitions going on to register 17 year olds at the school. They program is tailored to fit in with Harris and her sycophant media message. It's called "Stand up for Democracy"....all the while the pundits and media claim Trump is an enemy to democracy. This isn't just an isolate incident. It isn't just a statewide program. This is a national program that is being hyped by the Governors of each state...(primarily battleground states)

166 I'm no lawyer, self-defense expert, etc., but when I carry a little .22 Bobcat my target becomes the face / forehead instead of center mass. It's controllable enough to make those shots pretty easily, and a half dozen rounds passing through that area would hopefully stop a violent attacker more quickly than hoping one nicks something important in the chest (assuming it made it past the bone)

Yes, for survival situations a 22 is great for small game (think rabbitts, squirrels etc.) They dont chew the meat up like a larger caliber would.

They are dangerous and bullets will travel more than a mile landing nowhere near where you aimed though.

Also a good deal of gangland hits (I'm talking mafia pros, not some tatted up, inner city ,drug corner cocaine cowboy) were done with 22's. They dont make alot of noise compared to larger calibers. They would put 6 or 7 rounds close range in the back of your head right behind your ear

Until the gun control act of1968 they didn't even put SN's on 22's (I know because I have some) because they made millions of them. I got in an argument with some pimply faced kid in a gun shop in MD about that when I was trying to ship a 22 out of state. Finally the owner came out and said..He is right, that 22 doesn't have a SN, and never had one. So no SN made them very untraceable.

The story I heard was that the Israelis used to use suppressed Ruger 10/22s to break up riots during the Intifada, to avoid using fully lethal weapons. You can find plenty of photos online of IDF troops with 10/22s. They'd pick out the leaders or the violent pali mohammedans who were throwing Molotovs, and they'd shoot them in the legs or knees because they were trying to keep the death count down. But they found that it still resulted in similar numbers of pali deaths, mostly through gangrene or sepsis. So they retired the Rugers, figuring that if they were going to end up killing palis, it might as well be quick deaths from 5.56.

Poll firms are switching to likely voters screens from mid to end of Sept.

Any polling firm that is not using likely voter screens for respondents by this time needs to be ignored going forward.

A lot of states, including several swing states, do not allow new voter registrations within 30 days of an election which puts it at the first week in October.

EV analysis shows it skewing more GOP this time in the few states that have already started accepting those.

I would not recomend a 22 for self defense but If you only have a 22 and want to use it to the best of your ability, put a grapefruit in a stick and shoot at it with a 22 from 7 feet or so. When you can empty all rounds into the grapefruit you are ready.

Then pretend the eyes of your attacker are the grapefruit. Shoot at thge area between the eyes, if you hit the eyes its OK and effective. When you can pop 6 rounds quickly into that area that's as lethal as you can ever hope to get from a 22.

Sure, but we should also talk about their bias and their history of predicting elections.

Quinnipiac is one. They were one of the worst pollsters in 2020 (and beyond for that matter) and they have a long and well known Democrat bias. Not surprising since they are a university poll located in Connecticut.

It's silly to pretend their outlier poll giving Harris a 5 point advantage in places like PA is predictive when the vast majority have the race basically even or Trump ahead in PA. That's not unskewing, that's reality.

But the real indicator of the state of the race is what the candidates are doing. From the day she entered the race Harris has resisted doing interviews and wanted no debates. Now she is doing interviews and begging Trump for another debate. You don't change your tactics like that if you are winning.

22 LR is quite capable of killing someone at close range but it might not stop the perpetrator before they can cause you serious harm or death. Most defensive use never comes to that but drugged, mental, and/or drunk perps are common in hot house break ins or home invasions. That makes putting those critters down on the ground much harder and requiring something more than a 22 LR to save yourself from them killing you before succumbing to their wounds.

I would not use slugs for self defense. Too slow to recover from recoil for a subsequent shot and they will put a hole in the several interior walls and keep on trucking. That violates the safety rule of knowing what is behind your target.

Instead, consider 9 pellet 00 buck shot cartridges. There are some reduced recoil for self defense 12 gauge shells as well.

Man, I hate recoil. My Son bought a handi rifle for turkeys. Shoots 3 1/2" magnums. He took the steel weight out of the buttstock. Weighs 5 pounds. He fired one turkey load, 3 1/2" magnum (which I refused to shoot) and it separated his shoulder. Couldn't shoot again for 2 months.

Pro tip- Depends on where you live. In an apartment where your neighbors share a wall with you, stick with #4 shot or you'll be whacking your neighbors.

Single home, go with #1 shot to avoid over penetration and whacking the neighors.

I shot enough slugs back in the day to find them unpleasant even with relatively modern gas powered shotguns.

Slugs are one of the few options for hunters if you are unable to stalk within buck shot range and even longer range if you have a rifled shottie.

A few states have silly laws on hunting that pretty much require shotties or some idiosyncratic choices of straight wall cartridges like the 350 Legend being used.
