The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“He was my partner, my other half. One half of my heart and I’m the other half of his heart,” Tonya Lee wife of slain St. Louis police officer.

Quote II

"Why has the State Department not formally removed Malley from his position, nearly 15 months after he was placed on leave and 17 months after his clearance was suspended?" Rep. Jim Banks (R., Ind.)

Quote III

“Just as important for the fairness of our justice system is when we recognize when leniency is warranted — that we distinguish between the mastermind and the willing accomplice,” Sassoon, who was one of the lead government lawyers at the trial last year, said. “In the government’s view, a lenient sentence is what is just.” Assistant U.S. Attorney Danielle Sassoon
Leniency is warranted. YGTBFKM! Oh well, tell that to J6 political prisoners who did nothing more than trespass.

A RACOON PROBLEM CAN EXPLAIN TRUMP'S ATTRACTION

Like many citizens, I've wondered and tried hard to understand why Trump has such a remarkably large and loyal following. It's obvious why he probably should not! I, personally, do not like Trump or his persona. I wish he would just "go away" and spare us the embarrassment of having him show up on TV.

However; it doesn't look like he's about to leave the scene..... I still struggle to understand....

Then a friend sent me this raccoon story. It makes no difference about your political leanings, this is just a good explanation of WHY... (or it's as good as any I can come up with).

Do you really want to know how the majority of American citizens feel? This applies to both Democrats and Republicans; read below, it says it all.

You've been on vacation for two weeks, you come home, and your basement is infested with raccoons. Hundreds of rabid, messy, mean raccoons have overtaken your basement. And they have learned to get to the top floor of your once beautiful, middle class home. You want no them gone immediately. You call the city, 4 different exterminators, but nobody can handle the job.

But there is this one guy that specializes in racoon eradication and he guarantees you to get rid of them. So you hire him. You don't care if the guy smells, you don't care if the guy swears, you don't care if he's an alcoholic, you don't care how many times he's been married, you don't care if he voted for Obama, you don't care if he has a plumber's crack, you don't even care if he's a misogynist. you simply want those raccoons gone! You want your problem fixed! He's the guy. He's the best to solve the problem. Period.

Here's a corollary story for why Trump has such a large following of patriotic American citizens. Yes he's a bit of an ass (maybe a total ass). Yes, he's an egomaniac, an adulterer, a loud-mouth and abusive but we don't care because he makes sense with "Make America Great Again". The country is a mess because politicians totally suck and produce only self-serving rules. The Republicans and Democrats can be two-faced & gutless, and illegals are everywhere. Washington DC is infested with self-serving pests. We want it all fixed!

We don't care that Trump is crude, we don't care that he insults people, we don't care that he once was friendly with Hillary, we don't care that he has changed positions, we don't care that he's been married 3 times, we don't care that he fights with Megyn Kelly and Rosie O'Donnell, we don't care that he doesn't know the name of some Muslim terrorist. Also, we don't care if the guy has bad hair. This country is weak in resolve and bankrupt. Our enemies are making fun of us, we are being invaded by illegals (probably even terrorists), we are becoming a nation of victims where every Tom, Ricardo, and Hasid is a special group with special rights to a point where we don't even recognize the country we were born and raised in; "AND WE JUST WANT IT FIXED"!!!

And Trump is the only guy who seems to understand what the people want. We're sick of politicians, sick of the Democratic Party, sick of the Republican Party, sick of identity politics with self-identified special groups, sick of trying to guess the preferred pronoun and sick of illegals. We just want this thing fixed!!!!

Trump may not be a saint (he's definitely NOT), but he doesn't have lobbyist money holding him and he doesn't have political correctness restraining him. All you know is that he has been very successful, is a good negotiator, and he has built a lot of things. He's also not a politician.......he's not a cowardly politician......

And he says he'll fix it. And, we believe him because he is too much of an egotist to be proven wrong or looked at and called a liar.

We just want those raccoons gone, out of our house, NOW!!!!

The raccoons have got to go!!!!

If you can't beat them, join them. Or how a humble former police officer done allegedly naughty things.

Ex-Chicago cop — once a national TV pundit on policing — is now an accused police impersonator

Dimitri Roberts, 44, was charged last week with posing as a federal drug agent in Texas. He’s also been accused of impersonating cops in California and Chicago in recent years.

“Pretty sure that she was pretty shaken up, but looking at it from outside, she was fairly calm considering how dramatic this incident was,” 'She is also one hell of a Genius Award Winner.Coral Gables Fire Rescue Chief Xavier Jones said. Oh I might have been reading the chief's mind.

By Chris Hush, NBC South Florida and Brian Hamacher, NBC South Florida
A woman was rescued after a crash left a Porsche SUV dangling from the third floor of a parking garage in Coral Gables, Florida, on Monday, officials said.

The incident happened on the third floor of a garage at 1567 San Remo Ave. after, officials said, it appeared the woman driving the SUV accidentally hit the accelerator.

15 The STL news media has been despicable (as usual) regarding the killing of Officer Lee. They've had no choice but to admit the guy who killed him was an illegal immigrant, who's been in trouble with the law for other reasons; but it's totes okay, because he was sentenced to probation and didn't violate it.

22 An FBI agent has pleaded guilty to stealing from targets during raids and arrests, including from a man who was part of the mob that invaded the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Nicholas Anthony Williams, who worked out of the FBI’s Houston office but is no longer with the bureau, admitted Monday to four thefts while serving search warrants.

One of those was a July 13, 2023, raid on the home of Alexander Fan, a member of Asians for Trump who breached the Capitol as part of the protest against the Electoral College count that confirmed President Biden’s win.

The kicker?

Oh, and the higher education angle to all this, by the way? While on leave for allegedly mishandling classified information in his role as envoy to the Iranians, Malley has been given a soft landing with plum teaching posts at Princeton and Yale. His main subject, in the words of the Journal: “U.S. foreign policy and human rights.”

“Are we really going back down that same fucking broken road?” Elliott says in the video put out by the Lincoln Project on Monday...

It'll take a bit longer than the historical norm in this case. All the most powerful nations are going through the same nonsense simultaneously, so they can't/won't capitalize on the weakness of their peers, and the more sensible nations are weak, poor, and still developing.

Plus, the widespread adoption of fiat currency (as opposed to backing it with precious metals) and normalized debt allows failing governments to delay the inevitable by spend their way out of trouble, at least temporarily.

170 If the Republican Party is just as bad as the Democratic Party, there's literally no reason to root for a Republican to win the presidential election, right?
Posted by: Terry

There's an ongoing struggle for the leadership and direction of the Republican Party. You have the Establishment sellouts, represented by the Bushes, McCains, Romneys, National Review/The Bulwark/The Lincoln Project, who used to pretend to support the base's policy desires (restrict abortion, limit government, lower taxes, protect 2A, stop crime and illegal immigration, etc), but really they wanted a more powerful security state, more war/international intervention, and sweetheart deals for massive business partners.

The Republican opposition is hard to define, because it isn't as unified, and there are many who pretend to be part of it, just to get elected, but are really part of the Establishment (such as my senator, Ernst).

Trump isn't 100% what I want, but he takes power from the Establishment wing of the party and has moved the ball forward on more of the base's priorities than any other recent Republican, so he gets my vote.

Elliot plays a hardcore conservative rancher from Colorado with two sons played by Ashton Kutcher and Danny Masterson.

The show starts out pretty conservative but slowly moves further and further left as the show goes along concerning various issues like immigration, etc. Elliot’s character becomes less and less conservative over the episodes until by the end we’re seeing the real Sam Elliot, not his character.

It’s also pretty funny that they kill off Danny Masterson’s character (after Masterson was arrested for rape) by running him off a cliff on his motorcycle.

No Bush would have recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and started the process of moving the embassy. Both previous Bushes declined to do so repeatedly. They also would threaten a trade war with China, or suggest not defending NATO nations that don't meet their treaty obligations.

He didn't build a wall.

He did everything in his power to do so, but was stopped by the courts and legislature. You may be a fan of dictators and tyrants, but despite the hyperventilations of the Left, Trump follows the law.

I moved to NYC in the early '80s. I've been reading about Trump on The NYPost's Page 6 (celebrity tidbit page) and the news pages for forever. I remember his rather grandiose yacht he had to sell. Owning the Jersey Generals and having Herschel Walker as a player and a supporter now. I remember the affairs, the one with Maples and others. I also remember the Wollman Rink in Central Part. An ice-skating rink the city couldn't get fixed in years for tons of money. Trump stepped in on his own dime and got it fixed and running within something like 6 months. I've 'known' Trump a long time. He's always been this way. A bit brash and arrogant, but backing it up. He always came across as smart but not arrogant. He always seemed like the rich guy who didn't look down on the little people, like a guy who is able to get along with everybody, which is itself a rare gift.

226 No Bush would have recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and started the process of moving the embassy. Both previous Bushes declined to do so repeatedly. They also would threaten a trade war with China, or suggest not defending NATO nations that don't meet their treaty obligations.

- Don’t care: I live in America, not Israel. Why is it the only thing conservatives can conserve is Israel. (Hell, why even have embassies? This isn’t the 19th century, just do a Zoom call and CashApp to Zelensky.)
- Don’t want a trade war with China and it’s not like Trump’s worked.
- Okay, telling NATO to f*ck off is pretty based.

You may be a fan of dictators and tyrants, but despite the hyperventilations of the Left, Trump follows the law.

228 Terry, Trump did significantly reduce the illegal inflow. He revamped the business tax code, which was way overdue. He did not start any new conflicts. His economic environment showed real wage increases for lower wage workers and minority groups. And he set the stage for middle east peace. And he had as a group a pretty strong SCOTUS nominee group.

He got played on Covid, he spent way too much. His feud with McCain allowed McCain to torpedo the abolition of Obamacare, which has disrupted and significantly increased the cost of health care. He let Ryan hold up lots of stuff in the House. McConnell held him up for a cabinet or judges (with democrat help). He picked judges.

As always a mixed bag. Certainly significantly more successful than his successor, his screw ups have the middle east ablaze, the economy looking to fall into its second recession, and the border porous. But you knew that already.

And this is how stupid our political moment is - because Kamala is not running on a platform of "I'll do more of what you want the president to do" . She is running on "I'm a woman" and "I'm black-ish".

While I believe the pols are badly skewed, that this is getting even 40% support from the public is insane.

I think you can look at that two ways - one, everybody was sick of being on a 'wartime footing' with rationing, etc so demobilization went quick to address pent up demand for tires, cars, etc. Or....one could argue we never really 'demobilized' after WWII.

314 232 ...I moved to NYC in the early '80s.

I actually like Trump The Man. He’s hilarious. The mean tweets were the best part of 2015-2021. And he seems like a genuinely decent guy, at least by the standards of billionaires and politicians.

As a President: I got a tax cut. That was nice. He didn’t end the wars. It was nice he tried to and was willing to attempt rapprochement with NK, etc.

He didn’t stop the gay culture war. Didn’t even slow it down. Appointed a homo as ambassador and trolled traditional societies by flying the pedo flag at embassies.

Trillions in deficits. No rollback of the National Firearms Act. Still waiting for suppressors to be classed as safety equipment and sold at Lucky Gunner.

And then covid. Sure, it was a giant hoax and he got taken in and it was mostly the fault of Dem governors, but he fumbled it badly. Biggest loss of liberty in U.S. history happened on his watch.

I’m still gonna vote for him.

I'm actually surprised that the bar exam has lasted as long as it has, given how many people have flunked it who went on to become prominent politicians embarrassed by their failure.

That is now changing, of course - Oregon now allows allows law school graduates to join the state’s bar by working closely with a supervising attorney.

So, left-wing law firms can now simply hire new associates, who then get to avoid having to take the bar.

This is being done in the name of "diversity", of course.

2–Similarly, a case while she was DA in 2010. No indication she tried case.

3–Ditto of # 2. And the article specifically notes “her office” presented the case. That’s inherently not a case she tried.

371 @Terry...

It's fine you want a better candidate. But we currently don't have one, and I doubt we'll have one anytime in the near future. MAYBE, if we build the team better between now and 2028, we can get closer.

But, if you want that, stop yer bitchin' about Trump, vote for the guy, and move to the next stage: 1) encouraging Trump to destroy the Deep State, 2) looking past Trump and building the bench with real Constitutional conservatives, and 3) converting people back to Americanism and the foundations of Western Civilization.

If that last one doesn't get done, then you might as well walk into the desert now. Because without evangelizing America and Civilization we will NEVER vote our way out of this. And even shooting our way out of it won't actually restore anything but a rump of the Republic.

Instead of bitching about us voting for Trump, how about do the positive work of what we should make sure our candidates are proposing, what their principles need to be, how they need to fight, and then making sure oodles of people agree with you.

372 Funny this story should pop up tonight of all nights. At our mountain redoubt. Unbeknownst to me, when I let the puppy in from outside a bat flew in the door at the same time. It spent the next 15-20 minutes flying randomly around the main room. I turned off the lights and turned down the volume on the TV so he could echo-locate, and propped the screen door open and waited. He finally scooted out the door. Problem solved.

Moral of the story: Don't wait for a Trump.

I hate when that happens, we just had a bat inside a couple of weeks ago. Was reading the ONT, sipping some Merlot, when J comes running in...THERE'S A BAT IN THE HOUSE, they really freak her out.

We've been in this 120 yr old house for 36 yrs, it's not the first time. I must be getting better at this, experience helps.

Got the bat confined to the dining room, it was flying in circles like they do. By gum, about the 4th or 5th try I nailed it from the back, caught in an old minnow net we have.

Not too bad for an older not so agile boomer.

There is a great deal of randomness when it comes to lightning. You have a charged cloud passing over the terrain, and it induces an opposite charge in the ground, and that charge travels over the ground, following the moving cloud. At some point the breakdown voltage of the air between the cloud and ground gets exceeded, and there is a lightning strike. One would think high points get hit more, and they do, but not always.

I have lightning rods on my buildings. The rationale for them is that they bleed off the ground charge by corona discharge before the delta between cloud and ground can be exceeded. Have not had a lightning strike on any of my buildings, ever, as far as I know.

435 >> There is a great deal of randomness when it comes to lightning.

It's a chaotic process. Bottom of the cloud gets negative, top gets positive -- excess of electrons on the bottom. Cloud height is greater than distance between bottom of cloud and ground.

Due to that field close to the ground, positive charge develops on the ground underneath. The lightning strike discharge process is not one big spark, but a serious of little chaotic jumps.

Lightning storms are great fun to watch, if you are not in the danger zone. I watched one storm off to the north of me, and saw "sprites". Those are typically red discharges shooting straight up from a storm cell into the ionosphere. Weird stuff. For a long time, their existence was questioned, but now there is photographic evidence of them.

At the bottom of the cloud, local field gets high, and induces ionization of the air. Cosmic rays and other random events have a lot to do with how this works.

So a little finger, called a step leader works its way toward the ground in jagged, jumpy steps.

At the same time, on the ground, this process is going on as well, especially when a stepped leader gets close. These are called ground streamers.

Now, when a ground streamer hits a stepped leader, boom, you get the discharge.

You can actually see the corona ground streamers in the right conditions.

The main discharge is actually RF, a series of rapid current pulses through the ionized channel.

Note this process of cloud to ground lighting gets an excess of negative charge on the ground. That is equalized eventually by the positive lightning that comes out of the top of the cloud back to the ground. These pack quite a punch, much higher current and energies. And they travel a long way.

If if you feel that, get the hell of Dodge. My father liked to tell a story, years ago, when he and some others were out hoeing a cotton patch. (This would been way back, likely early '50s when he had a little baby cotton patch).

They felt that charge build up, threw down their hoes and ran like hell. Big boom in that spot.

It’s also irrelevant. Just because something worked in the past doesn’t mean we have to do it indefinitely. America of 2024 is very different than 1850. We’re no longer a wide-open frontier.

America was, at one point, a nation of slavery/indentured servitude and Indian Wars, until we weren’t. “We’ve always done it that way” is not an argument.

“A nation of immigrants” is propaganda meant to appeal to conservatives’ love of tradition and American history; it’s a rhetorical trick to get white people to accept mass importation of cheap third-world labor for the purposes of subduing the middle class and giving our oligarchs and their technocratic managers more power.

Charity used to be a Christian virtue which recognized that humans often need help, but we are also often prone to taking advantage.

Handing someone free money with no expectation of self-improvement on their part is actually a vice. It may feel good, but it often does not help the subject of the charity. More often than not, they are incentivized to become mooches. Charity requires discipline on the part of giver and receiver.

Raimondo didn't show up either. Happenstance? Coincidence? Has anyone ever seen them in the same room together?

STL has been making considerable news lately.
...MO closed the books today on an infamous murder from 1998.
The man who murdered well-known local newspaper reporter Lisha Gayle was executed today. Finally... only 26 years after he broke into her home & stabbed her 43 times.
Posted by: mnw at September 24, 2024 10:28

Holyf*ck. I knew Lisha at Guilford HS in Rockford. she was a yr younger and succeeded me as Editorials Editor on the school newspaper "The Voyager".

As I recall she did some social work and he was a client she was trying to help. I hope this brings some peace to her husband Dan. Many many thanks for posting this.

Not gonna lie. Maybe I'm delusionally narcistic, but I'd hate to think there wasn't paid trolls trying to disrupt stuff here.

I agree and not site specific. The paid trolls are trying to disrupt stuff everywhere. And bot farms are more sophisticated, too.

492 First world problem, and it's not even Sunday yet...

I wanted to read in bed tonight, but my kindle fell down between bed and wall. Hubby is sleeping & I don't want to wake him, so can't move stuff to retrieve the kindle.

Bah. Will have to stay in living room, use a lamp & read dead-tree book instead. Not as comfy as being in bed!
