  • The entire human genome on a poker chip. (Tom's Hardware)

    Ew.

    Etched by laser.

    Never mind.

The storage device, using glass or quartz discs up to the size of a CD, can store up to 360TB and last more or less forever unless you hit them with a hammer.

The problem is that you need a high power laser to write the data in the first place; you can't stamp them out in bulk.

  • Keeping Firewire alive on Linux. (Tom's Hardware)

Recent versions of Windows and MacOS have abandoned Firewire entirely, so if you need to maintain support for some unusual hardware device, Linux is really your only option.

    Or stick with Windows 10.

  • Running C code natively from JavaScript. (The New Stack)

You seem to be attempting to summon Cthulhu. Would you like me to help with that?

  • Are Facebook's Ray Ban smart glasses actually not terrible? (The Verge)

Yes, they're marketed as AI, but what's more important is that they contain a microphone, a camera, and speakers, all of which work - and reportedly work pretty well - without any AI bullshit.

And they're glasses; they don't cover most of your face and make your neck hurt. If you already wear glasses you can get them with your prescription.

And they cost $299, not $3499.

What they don't have in their current iteration is a display. There are other smart glasses like this that do have displays - not full VR but little HUDs, which can be very useful.

If these features can come together maybe the Apple Vision Pro can quietly die and be forgotten.

14 Finishing my second cup of coffee. Need to shave and shower soon, feed the monsters, and then me. Then, off to the electron mines!

When did it get to be that I started living for the weekend and just dragging myself through the work week?

Actually, I can answer that. It was the Sniffle Scare. First I discovered I liked working from home and skipping the commute; but millions discovered that. In my case, the big thing was the face diaper tyranny and the further tyranny of "Take this experimental shot or lose your job, unless we approve your request for exemption in one of two limited and circumscribed ways." Though they did approve my exemption, I lost all respect for my supposedly science- and medical-research-oriented employer and began to think seriously about retirement.

And my job is no challenge, not any more.

Oh, there have been jobs I hated and more than hated. But I have had a few where I either looked forward to dealing with puzzles and challenges, my computer programming days, or where I was appreciated and relied on, as in my previous job before this one. Here, I feel as though I'm merely marking time toward retirement.

I'm waiting it out until the election. If Trump wins, full speed ahead. If he doesn't, I still need to get started on my plans, as things will get bad pretty soon.

I wish I could talk it over with Miss Linda. But when I bring up "Gee, it'll be great when we have a porch and can sit outside on a nice evening," I get dead silence or a quick change of subject. Looks like I'm on my own with this -- one of the biggest things I've ever had to decide and plan. . . .

19 The height of the Sniffle Scare occurred when hubby was "expected to die" and I was taking all the fmla/pto/loa that I could, to take care of him.

My employer, while not requiring the clotshot, was heartily encouraging us all to get it. Hubby's Dr. said he should not get it, given his physical condition, which made me reconsider my own options.

I wanted to go back to work, but only for the money. After so much time off, I realized how much I really didn't like the corporate BS (and some coworkers) even though the job itself was quite interesting and challenging... The work *environment* ruined my enjoyment of the tasks at hand.

Then, "swing shift" at the factory was great, except was difficult to attend family functions where everyone else was "days" oriented. Ugh. And Mom would call me at 8am on days off.. oh, to be able to go back & spend more time with her!

Anyway-- finally got on days at the factory. Start time 4, 5, 6am (it changed somewhat over the years & due to orders, etc) Can't believe I did that for over 20 years! I *hated* getting up so early.

JQ, Miss Linda and I have been . . . involved in each other's lives for about thirty years now. She moved to be with me in Denver, but hated it and moved back here. Except for that brief time, we have never lived *together,* but in separate places. Her condo is a block away. She's "content" here, as she's said (though how anyone can be content in this dump nowadays is beyond me), and won't discuss the idea of a move. I've shown her beautiful little houses for sale on the 'Net, but she merely says, "That's pretty," and nothing more.

The only places she's said anything about are Texas, "That's out," and any place that gets really cold. I'll miss her if she won't go. But if she isn't fully on board with it, I can't drag her, and won't let her move in with me when I get settled. She has to be a full partner.

Yes.

It's sort of an ongoing thing legally. It's obvious who the real killer is and the family connection to Shapiro is strong. Some think it's the Jewish thing that kept him out of contention for VP, but I think this murder case is the prime reason. It's not going away.

Also, one of helpful people in the local Republican organization says, "You shouldn't just be talking to people locally. You need to go to big events. One is the run at the park." I asked "When is that?" Sunday at 10:00. Well, ummm, there's a slight problem with that. I didn't actually say this. I just rolled my eyes at her e-mail.

78 Went thru something kinda similar, when (then) BF was fixing to move far away & asked me to 'come along'-- I said "Only if we marry" and he said "Well, 'bye" so I said "Alrighty then... 'Bye"

He stayed. We were partners until he died.

JQ, the trouble is, I'm desperately unhappy here. And if I did retire and stayed, there is no way we could find an affordable house in anything but a dump area worse than where we live now. I've *got* to get out, for my mental health if nothing else.

We've been ***ked for a long, long time.

84 wikipedia

Feynman has been criticized for a chapter in the book entitled "You Just Ask Them?", where he describes how he learned to seduce women at a bar he went to in the summer of 1946.

(The book is Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman, which is great and lots of Morons have read it and there are free pdf's online.)

86 Wolfus, I fully expected BF to leave. I was sad, but wanted him to be happy.

Also, I needed to get going on my own career. Figured I needed to be responsible for myself & finally had a good opportunity that I'd have been a fool to discard-- at least without a more permanent standing in the relationship.

30 years later? Meh... if hubby were gone, and I had the same 'chance' again, might decide differently. Who knows?

Again: Best of luck. Life ain't easy.

89 Mornin'

Got a road trip this morning. Leaving for Western PA at 0900. Going to visit family and get out of Babylon DC for a couple of weeks. It's going to be raining, off and on, the whole trip. I'm going to make a side trip to the National 9/11 Memorial in Shanksville, PA. I'm going to leave my TV on while I'm gone. GRIT TV. The crime around my little part of Babylon DC has gotten worse. I also asked a neighbor to keep an eye on the place. I got a timer for a light in the living room and it's set up. Just small mitigation stuff. I will mostly trust God to protect my little place while I'm out.

I wish I could talk it over with Miss Linda. But when I bring up "Gee, it'll be great when we have a porch and can sit outside on a nice evening," I get dead silence or a quick change of subject. Looks like I'm on my own with this -- one of the biggest things I've ever had to decide and plan. . . .

She might not know how to express that she's trying to allow you to be the head of the household, a thing that is pretty much unknown these days can make things scary for everyone involved because of decades of societal conditioning towards the absurd modern notion of equality when there's air conditioning, equality when it suits us, and / or equality if it provides us with advantages.

It might not be a bad idea to come right out and ask if she's letting you take the lead or if there is some risk to the relationship involved that she'll discuss with you after you've made the wrong choice that you should've known.

Heh, maybe Lady YD can talk with her. She was scared to move and grit her teeth and did it. Later, when my brother's wife refused to move from Calirado, she told him "just make her do it. 109 The rayban glasses lack two other features not mentioned above - NOT requiring advertising on the glasses - and being able to accommodate a wider range of prescription lenses.

My current prescription doesn't fit for some reason the current available frames. Eventually, after cataract surgery, they may be an option.

My job requires deliveries to some not-so-nice neighborhoods, where it's not uncommon for someone to take a liking to your apparel or electronics and demand you give it up. I'd just as soon not advertise I'm worth being robbed.
