Richard the Lionheart Receives Communion in Hagia Sophia
Gaspare Fossati

In 1837, Gaspare Fossati, by command of the Russian Czar, moved to Istanbul to design and construct a new Russian Embassy. While there, he was hired by the Ottoman sultan to restore the Hagia Sophia. During Ottoman rule, the interior mosaics of the great Byzantine church were covered over in plaster. Fossati and his team removed the plaster, repaired the church’s structure, and restored its mosaics. He also produced a series of lithographs that documented the building’s interior and exterior. When everything was complete, the mosaics were covered up again. Fossati’s personal experience with Hagia Sophia can be seen in this work painted while he was still in Istanbul. The detail is exquisite.

This work is primarily about scale. Most of the canvas is taken up by the vast nave of Hagia Sophia which dwarfs a group of people at the bottom. There has to be close to a hundred figures here, but they are puny. Since I have never visited the building, I thought Fossati exaggerated the proportions some to enhance the viewer’s awe (not unheard of in art), so I googled some photographs. From what I can tell, this depiction seems pretty accurate. If anything, he might have reduced the scale somewhat!

Fossati wants us to feel the enormity of the space. I also think he wants us to marvel at how open and light it feels. That is one of the great paradoxes of this building. Hagia Sophia is massive but feels light. The height of the building, from floor to the center of the main dome is 182 feet! I cannot imagine the awe of walking into such a space. So, imagine the awe of the first people to enter the newly finished building.

Hagia Sophia was (is) an architectural wonder. When it was completed in the Sixth Century AD, it was the largest Christian church, and the largest interior space of any kind, in the world. The dome itself was a particular problem that took several tries to get right. Around its base, a row of arched windows, which on a sunny day, creates a ring of light round the bottom of the dome. The effect was so mind-blowing, one ancient writer thought it looked like the dome was actually suspended from Heaven. An explosion of other architectural innovations spread the immense space out further.

This is a mysterious painting. It doesn’t depict history. Richard I never visited Constantinople and so could never have visited the church or had communion there. So why did Fossati paint this? What was his point? He was a Swiss working for the Muslim Ottomans. When Fossati painted this, Ayasofia was used as a mosque. I wonder how his work on the Hagia Sophia and the censored art affected him. Here is a depiction of Richard Lionheart, one of the leaders of the Third Crusade participating in a Christian sacrament in the greatest church in Christendom. Is this painting a fantasy? Does it carry a subtle message of defiance or Western/Christian pride? Possibly a desire for Christian unity in the depiction of a Western Christian leader taking the sacrament in the home church of Eastern Orthodoxy?

Probably not. However interesting that all might be, I think the primary message of this work is the magnificence of the Hagia Sophia itself. It dominates. It dwarfs. The arches, domes, half-domes, vaults, and galleries; the mosaics and marble paneling are all rendered in minute detail to amaze. While the mystery in this work’s title persists, there is an irony that I found more interesting. For a painting about vastness and monumentality, it’s pretty small — only about two by one-and-a-half feet.

46 I'm Jewish so I don't know: does one kneel during communion?

It depends on the church. Generally, an Ovus Nordo parish will have you walk to the priest and take communion either by mouth or in the hand.

In a Tridentine parish, you kneel at the communion rail in front of the altar.

69 I saw a Netflix series on the war between the Ottomans and Vlad in Wallachia - remember as soon as the Muslims got into Europe they started expanding dramatically.

The series presents Vlad as the villain, of course (so much for anti-colonialism!) but I was interested in his brother Radu.

I knew that Radu, historically, sided with the Ottomans instead of the Christians but I wasn't clear why and the miniseries doesn't make it clear either.

I did a little research and apparently the Ottoman Sultan had turned Radu into his sex slave (even writing "poetry" about it) and destroyed the man's mind. And...I see why Netflix did NOT cover this aspect.

103 Brothers Gaspare (1809-1883) and Guiseppe (1822-1891) Fossati, were born in Switzerland and trained as architects in Italy. In 1833 Gaspare moved to St. Petersburg, and in 1836 he became the official court architect. In 1837 he moved to Istanbul to plan the new Russian embassy; he stayed to work on other projects including restoration work and original architecture, often collaborating with Giuseppe.

In 1847 Sultan Abdülmecid (1823-1861) commissioned the Fossati brothers to restore Hagia Sophia, a project which included removing the plaster covering the Byzantine mosaics. Approximately 800 workers were employed for about 2 years; they repaired cracks, strengthened foundations, renovated mosaics, and renovated the mihrab and the minbar.

In 1849 the restored building was revealed. 22 lithographs of Hagia Sophia were made. After the restoration, the mosaics were covered up again with plaster. The brothers continued their career as architects in Istanbul, finally returning to Switzerland in 1858.

109 Kris,
Thanks so much for today's choice and analysis. Like you, I have no idea what the motivation for the painting might have been. It certainly isn't about an historical event as Richard didn't get farther from England than France and didn't take part in the actual third crusade.

The artistry revealed in the painting is amazing. He really captures the overwhelmingly huge effect of the place. (I had to look up what it looks like.) For such a small painting the level of detail is startling. His ability to depict so much specific detail in the altar (?) area and the many individuals is also amazing. Did he paint with a one hair brush? The bright but muddy browns of most of the structure is such a contrast with the sunlight streaming in, the gold of the ceremonial area and the bright clothing of the people. The effect for the viewer is quite strong and effective.

Wow!

127 Oh one other "fun" note about the Ottomans. Since they were Muslims the Sultan would take a number of wives and concubines, which meant he might have many living sons from different wives on his death leading to an unclear succession.

All were nominally just as eligible to rule as each other so often the winning son had all his half brothers killed when the previous Sultan died.

Countries have money. And money makes things appear on your doorstep. You get money from working but mostly from social security nets the government provides.

Money makes the world go round, am I right? Cackle cackle cackle. So money is made by countries and those countries buy stuff from other countries. Stuff they need. Like orange juice and blenders. So money is important.

So money does make the world go round and therefore I fully believe in money and what it can do for you, to lift you up....and unburden yourself from the past. So yes, I like orange juice.

Having been born in 1982, I was too young for this phenomenon, but was watching a Rick Beato video wherein he talked about how some songs started as regional hits due to radio program managers constantly searching to be the person who discovered and broke a big song.

As those stations became consolidated, radio hits went from a collective effort to essentially one or two national program directors deciding what aired and what didn't.

Beato, who's name escapes me every time I look in my brain for it, did a video describing why today's music mostly sucks.

You USED to earn your music. Sure you heard a tune or two on the airwaves, but if you wanted it or wanted to hear what else they had, you had to work, earn money, travel to a store, and BUY it. Now, you can get all the music you can handle for $5 a month for a streaming service. It's disposable. Add that to the fact that anyone and their dog can download an app and use autotune to produce whatever, and music sucks balls.

I've never felt that way-that it was like and institution giving outs medications in a large church, although having communion in your seat rather feels like getting a snack in your seat while watchng the show. I guess people do what they have to do to accomodate lots of people and if God forbid you go over an hour and ten minutes people will complain. I meant to say in our church people kneel to take it at the altar rail, but because we are so small we can do that. I like kneeling, although I haven't been able to do that as a pastor. I need to get on to the next part of the service because to me it shows dependence on God in a visible way. We have been having Holy Communion every week for several months-which is not the tradition in my church unless a church has two services -. That is because when the denomination started they didn't have enough ordained clergy to get around in the US. Our dear patriarch complained because he's getting kind of crotchety and said "What are we Catholic now?" Some people have this idea that it's not special if we do it every week.

This is an incredibly suspicious development, especially when considering the undeniable links between CCP members, Governor Newsom, the Biden-Harris administration, and Governor Walz.

330 A lovely painting, and a magnificent, enduring structure to God.

Republic of Turkiye, Minister of Foreign Affairs -

"In the aftermath of the Second World War, Turkey made the historic choice of siding with the free world and the Western Bloc. This policy was led Turkey to become member of NATO on 18 February 1952. Since then, NATO has been the cornerstone of Turkey's defense and security policy.

Protocol regarding Turkey’s membership to NATO was signed on 17 October 1951. Law on the accession of Turkey to the North Atlantic Treaty was endorsed on 18 February 1952 and Turkey became a NATO member together with Greece."
