The Carina Nebula, just 7500 short lightyears away
The Carina Nebula is a vast region of bright and dark nebulosity located in the southern constellation Carina. It is also known as the Eta Carinae Nebula, the Grand Nebula, and the Great Carina Nebula. With an apparent magnitude of 1.0 and an apparent size of 120 arcminutes, the nebula is easily visible to the unaided eye on a clear night. It has the designation NGC 3372 in the New General Catalogue and is listed as Caldwell 92 in the Caldwell catalogue. The Carina Nebula lies 8,500 light-years away. It is one of the largest diffuse nebulae known. It spans about 460 light-years in diameter. Posted by: Wesley Crusher at September 20, 2024 07:27 PM (a3Q+t) 43

Giant penguins are notoriously ravenous and short lived. During their short existence, they emit more carbon by way of their mephitic excretions than three 747s flying around the world three times. This is roughly equivalent to a mound of excrement 40 feet high and 300 feet in diameter. Inside this "kill zone"' no creature can survive, save the giant penguin, who will soon itself expire from the corrosive funk arising from the penguin generated volcano of doom.

Woman Calls 911: "I Have a Boa Constrictor Stuck to My Face"
A woman in Ohio has been saved by firefighters after making a frantic 911 emergency call to explain she was being attacked by a boa constrictor. The Sheffield Lake resident was the owner of 10 other snakes, and had rescued the 1.7-metre-long (5.5 foot) boa just the day before the attack – but that act of kindness was not reciprocated when the snake suddenly turned on her. It's not known what exactly prompted the attack to take place last Thursday, but the breathless (and frankly distressing) emergency call made by the woman highlights how terrifying the ordeal must have been. https://tinyurl.com/3ed6zujr Posted by: andycanuck (CEzQx) at September 20, 2024 07:34 PM (CEzQx) 62
Here's another image of the Carina Nebula, taken by Hubble (I think): https://tinyurl.com/24ewlaw3 You can see the knight on the horse there too. All these telescopes can capture images in wavelengths the human eye can't see. They represent these with "false color". If you looked at these through a telescope with the naked eye, you wouldn't see much of this. They use false color to represent the wavelengths you can't see, and depending on which ones they enhance and which they don't, you get all sorts of images. In the full model, you'd put various little things out to represent all the planets and even the "plutinos" way out there recently discovered. Now, how big is the Milky Way compared to that. Well, let the Milky Way's spiral pinwheel be the size of the continental US. Image that pinwheel superimposed on the top of a map of the US. That's the diameter. Don't hold me too this, but I think the thickness of the main disk would be +/- 10 miles on that scale. That is the disk is 10 miles above sea level and 10 miles below. How big is the solar system in that? Take a quarter and plop it on the ground somewhere in Tennessee. Besides orbiting around the center (it takes about 250 million years for the sun to make one circuit) the sun also bobs up and down in the disk, perpendicular to the plane. That has it's own period, and I forget. But right now, we're on the upward leg of the z-axis. So, our quarter in Tennessee would have to be up the air somewhere above. So again appears the beloved Cafe thread, carefully curated by Herr Ace. Commander Star Sprinkle curls beside me, purring happily as we enjoy the selections on offer. Both she and I find the grooming of the tiger a most diverting bit of merriment. For Herr Tiger, there is the combined appeal of skritches and the removal of excess fur. The wedding dance awakens Werner's memory of the early 90s, specifically, I think, 1992.
The youngster M. Night Shyamalan sought out Werner to take on the role of Best Man for his upcoming nuptials. This was, of course, before The Sixth Sense, and apart from an Indy film, he only had a rom-com feature with Dennis Leary under his belt. I know what you are thinking, but all auteurs must start somewhere, and sometimes it will involve history's greatest monsters, Dennis Leary. Vern, (even the young do this) the youngster pleaded, you've got the tools and talents to pull this together. That is most flattering, M (ja, Werner sometimes gives as good as he gets), but Werner is a Lutheran, and you, for that matter, have converted to Christianity and are agnostic-curious adjacent. SCOOP: Kamala Harris downgrades venue for her Georgia event today TWICE due to low attendance Kamala is having some type of event at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center in Atlanta, Georgia today. I know someone who is doing the setup for the event and they have told me that the @KamalaHarris campaign has now downgraded the space for the event TWICE, from the stadium, to the auditorium, and now to the ball room because Kamala Harris’s campaign can’t get enough people to attend her event in Georgia 6 weeks out from the general election. The ball room has a max capacity of 650 people. I have asked the source who is a part of setting the venue up to send photos. They tell me that Kamala’s campaign has been very disrespectful to the staff at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center in Atlanta, Georgia and they have been screaming demands at the union members who are setting up the venue. My source is a union member who regrets that the IATSA @IATSE Union in Georgia has endorsed Kamala Harris. I was looking at the vertical bobbing up and down of the sun. The error bars on these various measurements are big, but we are on the upswing, passed through the plane a while back and are ascending. The period is ~60 million years (wide error bars on that), and right now we're maybe 20 parsecs (60 light years) above the plane. The peak will be about 100 parsecs or 300 light years before it turns and starts descending. The uncertainties there are huge, though. M, I told the lad, Werner will do the best that a Lutheran Kraut can do. First must I know, however, if there is to be a shocking twist at the conclusion of the service. Shall it be that your bride is revealed to be a Mynah bird? Can it be that Werner realizes that he has been dead all along? For then would Werner be pissed off to a medieval degree, seen only in Quentin Tarantino films or Rachel Ray productions. M. Knight was scribbling something down in a notebook entitled "What a Twist," but he re-assured me that all would be well.
Assembling an authentic Indian wedding is an arduous matter, including selecting a majestic Baraat Ghodi, the snow-white horse that the groom rides into the service. This time there would be two, because the bride can elect to ride a Ghodi as well. All the traditional garb - Werner did not realize there were so many Saris in the world, and most of them were directed into the ceremony. Thanks be to Gott that neither horse elected to relieve themselves during the wedding service. I had tasked Kinski with preventing this, and for once the beast succeeded. Alas, one final post. The wedding went well, and all of us were misty-eyed when the cleric announced I know pronounce you M. Night Shyamalan and wife. Then was much cheering and merriment. The newlyweds readied to perform their long practiced wedding dance, and then it happened. The door was kicked open, revealing the hated visage of Wilford Brimley. Ain't no Hindi wedding taking place in Wilford's town. Has the diabeetus scrambled your brains, I inquired. Did it say, yo, abomination of a thing that should not be, let's gatecrash M. Night's wedding. Not on Werner's watch, glucose phobe. CQB hand-to-hand was required, as I had left my revolver in my other suit. We squared off as the congregants looked on in fear. I landed a few good ones, sending his dentures to the floor
Brimley, however, fought dirty. Feigning weakness, he left himself open for an uppercut, and when Werner attempted this, he was blocked and received a liver punch, followed by a rabbit punch and a hard jab to the kidney. Werner was on the floor and imagining telling others in the Afterlife that Mr. Diabeetus had ended my life. Sneering, Brimley moved in, saying Kraut, you fixin' to check out. Ach, one more post. Posted by: Sebastian Melmoth at September 20, 2024 08:35 PM (jNAzB) I read an article some years ago, someone arguing the concept of the "black hole," is very misleading, and there may not be a thing that is a black hole. The claim was the concept was mostly about mathematical equations that showed a lack of something measurable, when there should have been something. So they really don't what it is, or what's causing it. Then that photo was released a few years ago, and nobody really knows what that is either. I don't believe anything anymore. If scientists tell me there's a giant blintz in a faraway galaxy, and it farts to the Star Spangled Banner, I'll just shrug and say "yeah, whatever," the same as I do for most everything they say these days. Werner could not pull himself to arise or even roll aside. Brimley prepared to stomp my cranium into eternal oblivion. Then came a voice. Hey, four-eyed walrus moustache! He turned to see who dared to speak so. Before he could answer, the same voice told him Most un-Homey of all Homies, you ain't gonna curb-stomp my man. Je, I muttered to Brimley, Werner has a plus--one.
Resplendent in her Sari, Ayn Rand strolled up to Wilford. Talk to the hand, bitch, she instructed him, hammering him with a shot to the chin while he gazed at her up-helt left. What followed was carnage, most beautiful to behold. A savage kick shattered Brimley's knee, multiple Edenborough hellos reduced his visage to a travesty of anything human, expertly-delivered right and left hooks ensured that he would drink from a straw for quite some time, and a final Tae Kwon Do spinning kick launched the vicious bigot off his heels and left him unconscious. Ayn carefully pulled me to a standing position and helped me from the room. Yo, Mo-Fos, she said, dance like you mean it. We gots to see a doctor for my Shorty. Don't nobody call no Popos, or else Ayn gonna be angry. Good times, ja, good times. Posted by: Werner Herzog Has Opinions at September 20, 2024 08:53 PM (tmPIh) 286

That burger is good, but you don't have to pay HVAC or cleaning bills, or repaint the parking lot, or pay water bills. Why is your food as or more expensive as a sit-down restaurant? But the eggs will almost certainly be better quality. That said, they will have a more robust flavor and lots of people have trouble getting used to that after decades of eating factory eggs. The ER is hard work.
People are scared, they are hurting, sometimes acutely. So much shit is going on. You have the patient, yes, but that's oftentimes the easiest person to deal with. Family, partners, observers, well wishers and ne'er do wells are all there. Sometimes law enforcement is there. Sometimes people speak English, sometimes the pretend to, which is worse, and then some don't even try. There's drama and overreacting and screaming and silence. It's not a fun place to be. But. It's an important place to be. And people trust you to help them. But some people are just assholes. And most of the time, the nastier they are, the less emergent their issue. Be nice. Answer questions directly. Be polite. It's ok to be afraid. But don't be an ass. Posted by: nurse ratched at September 20, 2024 09:20 PM (j8MoG) 362

Event Horizon was mentioned - production story explains how it ended up such a mess. Original script was for a hard sci-fi story about a black hole and a ship. Got half way through filming, producers decided it was boring, fired first director, brought in a team to make it a pure horror film. But a bunch of the first team was still around and they wanted it to still be sci fi film. In the end all the parts filmed by both groups got lumped in together and they called it a wrap.

The two big rumors on the Judge-Sheriff shooting thing are the judge was a pedo, having sex with the Sheriff's underage daughter, and the other is this "sex to get out of jail" thing supposedly done by a deputy. The deputy would use the judge's chambers to make a deal with some poor woman to make the charges go away. There is a lawsuit alleging this going on right now, I saw. So, was the judge in on it? Was the Sheriff? Or the was the judge not, maybe going to expose it, and the Sheriff makes up the pedo stuff. Who the hells knows, but there was something really dirty going on. This kind of thing is very personal. There was some really personal hatred going on for the sheriff to just walk in and shoot him like that. Raping his daughter would be one. I know only a few watch it. Because, damn, that's some seriously beta male AND woke stuff. Anyway, some nigh immortal cave and mountain dwelling dwarves ran away from bats? And Durin the great thanked his wife (first black dwarf) for it? I knew I should have stayed away from this second set of episodes... but I didn't know they'd sully the mythical world so bad. Ugh. I'm going back to Sunday cartoons of my childhood. Posted by: Glyph 4225 at September 23, 2024 12:00 AM (qLMWS) Processing 0.06, elapsed 0.0783 seconds. |
