10 Homeowners Associations get a bum rap because they're the first bastion of petty tyrants everywhere -

but damn I wish that my neighborhood's HOA didn't expire back in the 90s. My life has been living hell all summer with jackhole ugly construction disruptions and a-hole out of towners basically ruining things around here.

>>>Secret Service agent 'put on leave after sexually assaulting Kamala Harris aide' in latest bombshell allegation

"Accusations that a Secret Service agent sexually assaulted a staffer on Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign team is just the latest scandal to plague the agency.

"The incident allegedly happened while Harris staffers were dining and drinking at a local restaurant over the last week when they were in Green Bay, Wisconsin, to plan for an event that ultimately did not happen.

"During the advance security and planning trip, a group went back to a Harris' aide's hotel room where one agent allegedly groped and forced himself onto a female staffer.

"One source said the accused agent was very drunk and was kicked out of the hotel room by co-workers.

"The agent passed out in the hallway where photographs were taken of him, according to the person within the USSS community."

Many dont know this but my aunt, Patti LaBelle, was asked to sing at the Trump Inauguration in 2016.
Her management ordered her to refuse.
Because (wait for it) :
Every black entertainer was ordered not to perform for the President of the United States.
Upon penalty of lost wages and loss of career.
This is when I knew America was in trouble.
Democrats were dividing America by race - AGAIN.
So in 43 days I'm voting for Donald Trump.
Because Trump winning in 2016 was the last time America really felt like… AMERICA.
I WANT THAT FEELING BACK.
Who’s with me on that?

However, it takes place in 1603, and considering that Tachibana Ginchiyou died in 1602, it's not altogether unthinkable.

Senate releases its report on J13:

USSS was notified about an individual on the AGR roof approximately two minutes before [Thomas M.] Crooks fired from AGR roof. Three minutes before shots were fired, a local law enforcement officer sent out a radio alert that there was an individual on the AGR roof. This information was passed to the USSS Security Room approximately two minutes before Crooks fired. Approximately 22 seconds before Crooks fired, a local officer sent out a radio alert that the individual on the AGR roof was armed, but that was [allegedly] not relayed to key USSS personnel that the Committee spoke with.

———

The top three USSS site agents all said they did not receive that information nor a report 25 minutes earlier that someone had a range finder.

Those three have to be lying.

178 >>> Start with the leaked news that Inside Out 2 was de-gayed because of the backlash over Lightyear?

Inside Out 2 was good! Old school Pixar, which is why it made over a billion.

Teen Riley has a deep dark jail for all her most supressed secrets, and I was like crap, they're gonna make her gay or trans, aren't they? And her secret gayness has to bust out of jail? (Her interior head characters are a mix of genders, other people usually have emotions that present as one gender or the other.) But then the deep, dark secret was innocent and cute and not controversial at all. I breathed a sigh of relief.

I can see where they might have tried to add LGBT stuff, and where they avoided it. And it's a much stronger film for it!

Second-order.

The "Korean Wave" got started as domestic media - especially TV and music - started to hit the skids. When everything being produced for the top 40 is desultory, boring, undifferentiated noise, it creates an opening for competitors. When everything being produced for TV is boring, preachy, poorly-characterized trash, it creates an opening for competitors.

Add into it third-party distribution (the internet, which can end-run the major outlets) and the internet's unrivaled ability to both amplify fads ('my TikTok friends love K-Pop, so I get a lot of it') and "crowdsource" stuff like translation, and it's no surprise. If it hadn't been Korea, it would have been somewhere else.

well, since you didn't quote any context, i'm assuming you're curious about the plot of the film. blue meanies invade pepperland. old guy is sent off in yellow submarine to get help and finds ringo, who enlists the rest of the beatles. psychedelics ensue. beatles sneak into pepperland, disguise themselves as the lonely hearts club band, and defeat the blue meanies. then we all sing "all we need is love" as we exit the theater.

The Who post 1966 stage shows until roughly Live at Leeds and Led Zeppelin did it louder and later than the Beatles and the Stones.

Keith Moon and John Entwistle nearly ended up being founding members of Led Zeppelin due to a dispute with Roger Daltrey at the time--I think I remember that Keith provided the inspiration for the name of the band when he was drinking with Jimmy Page and Robert Plant. Told them that their new band would go over like a Lead Zeppelin.

Yeah, but I don't call that Rock and Roll, it was more like we are evolving from what the Beatles did. Hard rock came from the British guitar evolution. The rock and roll tree was uprooted. From the Beatles came Hard Rock and Pop. And from Hard Rock came prog rock and stadium rock/pop bands.

And from the gooey underside of a greasy spoon diner the Beatles stopped at one night before they broke up came Disco, bleh!

The main character giving up fame and power for a happy, middle class life is a staple of Richard Curtis, the writer of the movie. His directed film, About Time, ends in a similar place.

250 Yeah, but I don't call that Rock and Roll, it was more like we are evolving from what the Beatles did.

If you mean the American stream--then you have CCR with its incredible years of 1968-1970 and also The Band. Both are light years better at that style music than either the Beatles or Stones. Mick Taylor after Brian died took the Stones to a much more bluesy direction in their recordings and he was with the band until something like 1974.

The Seventies were actually pretty good as far as the American stream of rock went.

El Eternauta, which is based on an Argentine graphic novel of the same name, about how it began to snow in Buenos Aires in the Summer, with an odd radioactive snow that killed everyone it touched. Then as the survivors tried to figure out what was happening, they discover that aliens are invading and have put a force dome over the southern part of South America and the snow was to kill all the humans.
Then the find out that the rest of the planet has been firing nukes at the dome, complicating their plans of escape
Incredibly famous graphic novel, but in Spanish. As is the series since it was filmed in Argentina. One day it will get subtitles!

Line in the Sand (2024) - Official Trailer | James O’Keefe, Debut Film
Undercover journalist James O'Keefe goes to the front lines of the migrant industrial complex using hidden cameras and raw testimonials. Watch this gripping exposé of a corrupted system that demands change.

"Line in the Sand" premieres October 10th, exclusively on the Tucker Carlson Network.

James O’Keefe’s interview with a Border Patrol agent for his movie was so powerful that the agent decided to become a whistleblower. The DHS has now issued the agent a cease. That pissed off other agents; now, five more border agents have decided to blow the whistle on the DHS.

364 You had to have lived when the Beatles broke into the American market, which was at that time dominated by the likes of Pat Boone (nothing against him; he was wildly successful). The English invasion was blowing people's minds, Rolling Stones, Kinks, The Who, even the saccharine Herman's Hermits. How did America respond? The Dave Clark 5? Jeez.

The Beatles were one of, if not the tightest live band both instrumentally and vocally. After their early years of cover songs, they were remarkable in their output. IMHO, everything up to Sgt Pepper was superlative. With Sgt Pepper, the Lennon/McCartney schism was apparent and the band really suffered. Testament to each of them to have successful solo careers, such as they were/are.

392 You had to have lived when the Beatles broke into the American market, which was at that time dominated by the likes of Pat Boone (nothing against him; he was wildly successful).

395 Ubislop news

Ubislop has just skipped the Christmas season and pushed Assassin's Creed: Shadows until 14 Feb 2025.

They are also refunding all the pre-orders. I think this counts as an event flag.

But wait there is more!

Those who are willing to pre-order again, will get the first expansion pack for free. And it will go for sale on Steam on day one.

399 Not really talking about rock, per se, but music in general.

One could argue (and I do) that big band was subsumed like classical music into movie themes. 'Raise the Titanic' might have been a shit movie, but that soundtrack was insane. 'Last of the Mohicans' soundtrack is pulse pounding.
Posted by: Aetius451AD Work Laptop
=======
Movie musicals declined along with the sing and dance musicals throughout the 50's as TV took hold. 60's and at least half of the 70's generally had some truly dreadful dreck as soundtracks for movies.

John Williams via Jaws, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, etc. and Elmer Bernstein returned classical music to to movie soundtracks by the mid to late 70's.

Have to include The Sting soundtrack though with Marvin Hamlisch in reviving the dead genre of rag.

401 Possibly economics did in the big band era as it became too expensive due to labor costs for the big touring bands and you note that we pivot to smaller groups in jazz and then rock/blues/etc. along with increased radio airplay.

also new recording tech to allow smaller sounds, and cheaper production costs, as well as allowing radio stations to play records instead of only allowing them to use bands to play current music.

My favorite part is -- a day or two fter Harrison quits the band during a recording session -- McCartney (with sad puppydog eyes on the verge of tears) looks directly into the camera and says "In 50 years, they're going to say that the band broke up because Yoko sat on an amp."

Nearly nailed it ...
