Gardening, Puttering and Adventure Thread, Sept. 21

m front walkk.jpeg

Happy Autumn - tomorrow!

The photo above is extra-special:

This is the beautiful walkway that my brother created for the front of the house. It's awesome to have so many flowers that you can take bouquets and still have tons of flowers!

In the front to the right, you may see the dark red potato plants - the deer hit it pretty hard. They've left us alone for the most part. I'll send a closeup.

The vegetable garden is in the background. You can see the tomato trellis and maybe the okra, which is pretty tall now.

Miley

WOW. Just Wow!

Now we have a better understanding of some of your past posts about plants, too.

And as promised, a close-up of that potato plant in the front:

It's starting to grow back after being topped off pretty hard by the deer.

m tatr plant.jpeg

Yay! Is there something else edible in that photo?

Edible Gardening/Putting Things By

These are photos of my taro.

I live in Oregon, in the Willamette Valley, and we are considered a maritime / Mediterranean climate, which is dryer and cooler than taro likes - Nothing like SE Asia and Pacific islands where it is usually grown. It is doing pretty good, for being way out of its zone, though I think it really is a bit small.

I am growing it in a worm bin, which for me is a salvaged bath tub that I filled with some starter dirt, wood chips and worms, and then started putting in lawn clippings, and vegetable scraps from the kitchen and canning. To block the dirt from running out I put in some landscaping cloth over the drain. .
I dump my dishwater into it from hand-washing dishes, and collect the run-off and leachate (worm pee) in a five gallon bucket under the drain and pour that on my little fruit trees and berries. It seems to be doing the trees a lot of good. In the Spring I will dig half of the dirt out and put it on the garden as compost, and start again.
Taro need a lot of water, so dumping in a couple of gallons of dishwater every day seems to suit it well, and the worm bin processes the washing water and food bits and makes the worms happy. My next task is to figure out how much taro I have grown and then figure out how to cook it.

From By-Tor:

Chinese hot chili oil is easy to make. I used about 1 1/2 cups of chili flakes, equal parts avocado oil and sesame oil, half a teaspoon chopped garlic, and a homegrown habenero chili, diced.
Simmer at low for 10 minutes and jar it. It will stay good in the fridge for a long time. I like it better than sriracha for spicing up dishes.

Still seems too hot for me. Attractive, though. Anybody going to make this?

Plant I.D. Request

Hi KT and the horde,
Here’s a plant my 29 yo brain can’t remember the name of.

Details:

MN native, flowers now (same time as Asters,) with individual flowers about 1/4 inch around. IIRC it is wetland adjacent, and about 2 to 3 feet tall. Plant in pic is leaning against my front steps.

Thanks

1 I had a different weed growing in my backyard this year. Looking it up I think it is Jewelweed. It is also know as "touch me not" but I don't see anything indicating it is dangerous to touch like say poison ivy.

9 Beautiful garden!s!

The coyote I find a bit scary because they eat cats and small dogs in my neck of the woods.

We've had so little rain, the lawn went dormant. There are also bare patches around where the oak was because the shade-loving plants died in the sun.

On the ironic side, there are three zucchini that might grow big enough to harvest. Found theme when I began to pull up the plants.

Every crop winding down here, too. A few more zucchini on the vine, a few more cucumber, a lot of green tomatoes. A race against time now as there are a hundred blossoms on my grape tomatoes which put too much effort into growing tall.

My spinach and lettuce seeds do not like 'Miracle Grow' potting mix. I wonder what the hell is going on with that. No germination at all. I've never seen that. I have some decent soil around so I'll try that.

Posted by: Divide by Zero at September 21, 2024 01:48 PM (RKVpM)

14 I make hot chili oil for my wife, in my case it is just dried chilies and sesame oil, I don't even cook it, I just let it soak in the fridge.

I will try adding in the crushed garlic next time.

I grow cayenne peppers, some Korean peppers and shishito peppers as well as some saved seed. I dry most of them when they get red and grind them into flakes, and at the end of the season with the first frost I take what is left and lacto-ferment them for pepper sauce.

Yes, technically - there are two artichoke plants in the background, silvery spiky leaves. They didn't do well this year. Maybe if they come back next year, they'll kick in.

19 9 The coyote I find a bit scary because they eat cats and small dogs in my neck of the woods.

Our cat Jake hasn't been seen since Sunday. I fear the worst.

There are coyotes around, but not on our land, AFAIK. Jake is a tough, good-sized cat and knows this land like the back of his paw, so I wasn't expecting this.

20 Miley,

Thank you, nurse! My brother always goes balls to the wall on his projects. We were just hoping for some stepping stones, since he's the hard labor around here (Publius has RA).

But no, during the winter he goes "window shopping" for the best rocks in the woods. In the spring he has Publius bring the front loader up to retrieve them. They were to line the pathway and add interest to the beds. He has a lot of mulch cloth under there to fight Bermuda grass, which is Satan's own grass. It doesn't die even in Hell.

In the center of the walkway he created a "fish bone" using black accent stones, and various other whimsical designs. It's a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.

There were coyotes where we used to live and we saw a lot of those signs like: Missing--Fluffy, orange and white cat, etc.

Husband kept saying he was going to print signs that said, "Fluffy was delicious. Signed, The Coyote."

Nurse, you are right to keep Lucy inside. There's no other way to keep cats safe from coyotes.

Same. Had some infested with millipedes. Used it to repot an indoor plant and had millipedes crawling everywhere. Same issue with poor plant performance as well.

Someone on some blog somewhere said they made cost cuts during Covid supply shortages to increase bark / peat ratio. I have a hard time not believing this. Makes sense.

I'll be sure to forward all of the compliments to my brother We're in upstate SC, btw.

You're probably seeing a glimpse of heavy duty black plastic in the vegetable garden that's been laid down to kill weeds. We've got fall prepping to do. The only live water we have is a trickle of spring-fed stream in the woods behind the house. When it rains, you can hear it, but otherwise it's mostly standing pools in a 6 foot deep gully. It turns into a real stream at the other end of the property.

All of this used to be under the plow since before Publius was born.
