Exploding pagers: Back during one of the warmer segments of the Cold War, operatives would slip the occasional "spiked" round of ammo into ChiCom supplies destined for the jungle wars. When fired, the round would explode, and wreck the rifle or machine gun, and sometimes the operator too.
The random explosions were intended to damage morale. There was some concern that this contaminated ammo might make its way into the US as military surplus, but as far as I know there weren't any incidents. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at September 17, 2024 10:15 PM (uv/K9) 58

I found out recently the same company has another ETF for Republicans called CRUZ. I compared the two and over the last year NANC is up 32% whereas Cruz is up 14%. The market is up 10-12% or so. Posted by: Bertram Cabot, Jr. at September 17, 2024 10:16 PM (63Dwl) It makes the lead write better from the initial marks on cheap paper. I think the graphite "lead" originally was just graphite, the modern pencil leads have a plasticizer in them so they will write better like a crayon from the beginning and be more shock resistant when I was in grade school what you would do to people you didn't like was to bang their new pencils on the edge of the table or the back of one of the chairs to shatter the lead inside the wood, so the lead would break off every time it was sharpened Posted by: Kindltot at September 17, 2024 11:01 PM (D7oie) 216

Got it. If the Democrats do succeed in assassinating Trump before the election, how do the mechanics work? I assume that Trump/Vance remains on the ballot, and if that ticket takes the Electoral College, then Vance becomes President and selects a Vice President, subject to Senate confirmation. Realistically, though, they'll just cancel the Presidential election and make Kamala President, with the Presidential election delayed "until an appropriate time". Meanwhile, in Ukraine:
1. The northeast salient formed by the invasion towards Kursk is being crushed. Smaller Ukrainian thrusts across the border have stalled. A little further westward, both sides have cleared civilians away from the border, anticipating action in the area. 2. In the eastern sector, the Russians continue to slowly push the Ukrainians back. Occasionally, the Ukrainians can mount a counterattack and regain a village or hold open a corridor long enough to evacuate trapped troops, but they are basically fighting rear guard actions. 3. In the south, the Russians threaten to push northwards, pinning down troops and equipment that the Ukrainians desperately need to move to the eastern sector. So pretty much that's 100% the Dems strategy. They will call in bomb threats on election day to liberal strongholds, they'll use that to then extend voting, or possibly even say we need to add another day of voting (and also extend mail in deadlines for those too traumatized to go vote) That's how they'll then produce enough votes to make sure they beat Trump's vote count no matter what. Bwahahaha. As for "innocent" victims, Lebanon long ago ceased to be a normal state, and in fact has been a state at war with its neighbor, where the "military" in question actually dominates the country and does what it pleases, as it violates UN resolutions, diplomatic commitments, and continues its "military" operations, 90% of which consist of standard terrorism via unguided rockets aimed at civilian areas. My shop day came to weird end. I had finished servicing the rear brakes on my '99 Suburban, and had painted the left rear brake drum (high heat cast iron paint) and the wheel (silver wheel paint). Looks very nice, now. Filled the rear axle with gear lube, as the seal on the right rear had been leaking badly.
Moved around to the right front, since I have to change the ABS sensors, and check on the front brakes prior to out-of-Province inspection. Well, brake pads are brand new, and rotors look fine. Was in the process of removing the caliper to get at the ABS sensor, and my cellphone rings. It's in my front jeans pocket, and I'm sitting on the ground, so I laid back, fished it out of my pocket in time to hear the last ring... Then I sat up, and was immediately hit with a vicious dizzy spell. Got to my feet, and I was staggering like I was drunk. Sat in a chair for few minutes, and my skin was clammy and sweating. Pet bereavement leave is the kind of thing that only happens when women enter the workplace and male socialization and peer pressure no longer prevail. You'd never be able to live down pet leave in a male-oriented culture. (And I say this as a man who has lost dogs and been pretty miserable over it. But life and work go on and can't stop for dead pets, no matter how wonderful they were.)

My former partner bought me a pager for Christmas one year (yes, it was the 90s, LOL) due to my sometimes being on-call at one of my jobs.
I thanked him profusely, because it really was a thoughtful gift... but asked him to please return it. Because if that cheap-skate employer (one of 3 I had at that time) wanted me to be on-call that often, he could bygawd provide the pager! Plus, it was quite nice to be *unavailable* at times. Sheesh.
