21 today I watched a young woman I know shake a ballpoint pen when it wouldn't write. I realized that shaking a pen to get it to write only works for fountain pens, and she never used one, nor probably did her mom or dad.

I always shook ballpoints when I was in school and I know I never had a fountain pen until I was in college. It also never worked.

This is an example of viral learning, but in this case meaningless actions passed down without understanding for generations.

I found out recently the same company has another ETF for Republicans called CRUZ.

I compared the two and over the last year NANC is up 32% whereas Cruz is up 14%. The market is up 10-12% or so.

If this isn't proof of stock manipulation/insider trading I don't know what is.

It makes the lead write better from the initial marks on cheap paper. I think the graphite "lead" originally was just graphite, the modern pencil leads have a plasticizer in them so they will write better like a crayon from the beginning and be more shock resistant

when I was in grade school what you would do to people you didn't like was to bang their new pencils on the edge of the table or the back of one of the chairs to shatter the lead inside the wood, so the lead would break off every time it was sharpened

If the Democrats do succeed in assassinating Trump before the election, how do the mechanics work?

I assume that Trump/Vance remains on the ballot, and if that ticket takes the Electoral College, then Vance becomes President and selects a Vice President, subject to Senate confirmation.

Realistically, though, they'll just cancel the Presidential election and make Kamala President, with the Presidential election delayed "until an appropriate time".

Moved around to the right front, since I have to change the ABS sensors, and check on the front brakes prior to out-of-Province inspection. Well, brake pads are brand new, and rotors look fine. Was in the process of removing the caliper to get at the ABS sensor, and my cellphone rings. It's in my front jeans pocket, and I'm sitting on the ground, so I laid back, fished it out of my pocket in time to hear the last ring... Then I sat up, and was immediately hit with a vicious dizzy spell. Got to my feet, and I was staggering like I was drunk. Sat in a chair for few minutes, and my skin was clammy and sweating. That passed, and I put some tools away, went in the house, and laid down. Feel OK now.

In June. Earlier this evening, I called back to the friend who had called me at 4:30, when this all started. He asked me, "did you check your blood pressure?" Well, yes, i did , and it was 112/56. He said, "I had the same thing happen to me, and my Doc said "your systolic BP is too low, and dizziness vertigo is almost certain at that level."

So I will be making a call to the doc in the morning, and maybe we will reduce the BP meds a tad.

I've had to reduce my BP meds, got dizzy spells. The worst is when light things started to turn purple. Then I know not to get up for a bit. Took my BP and it was 98/43.

I decided, as an experiment, to take half of an amlodipine pill tonight, instead a whole one. My BP this morning was on the low side, too. Pretty sure that is the cause. I wasn't really exerting myself much at the time; just sitting on the ground pulling on a wrench, and it was not hard work.

Anyway, they had to take me off some BP meds because of said lightheaded dizziness that could occur. I had it particularly bad just standing up; I had to be real careful. The drugs worked, I just didn't need it as it lowered my BP too much.

But, yeah, I agree the bottom number seems a bit low, with 70 around the 'norm'.

I just did some reading. Seems like a perfect storm of causes. BP meds? Check. Had a big carb-laden meal? Check. Was sitting for spell? Check. Then laid down to wiggle the phone out of my pocket, and sat up suddenly. Check. Will still be phoning the NP.

I remember the store had a new volume every week, so you could pick up the next volume every time you did your weekly shopping. Back when $20 at the grocery store would buy enough food to fill the back of a '60s station wagon.

I was around 7 or 8 and the entire encyclopedia set just appeared, no weekly wait. I loved those volumes. Spent many an hour just perusing various topics in alphabetical order. Kept me 'entertained in a good way' thereby avoiding cleaning my room. Good times.

One is Funk and Wagnalls, the other is "The Golden Book Encyclopedia of Natural Science". The latest copyright date in the F&W is 1966, the Golden Book is copyright 1962. I have both sets in a bookcase here in the room with me. I also have another encyclopedia set that my parents had, that are older than me. They're somewhere in the house, I'm not sure where.

I was a weird kid, I used to read the encyclopedia, not looking up anything specific, just reading them. I learned a lot of general stuff that way.

Oh I have access to a set that will blow you encyclopedia nerds away. As curator at a local hist soc I accessioned a set of Britannica Encyclopedia printed 1818. Very cool as IL was still a state and set for admission later that year.

In class I used to read the dictionary. It definitely improved my spelling and vocabulary. At home I also read encyclopedias usually looking something up and then just getting sidetracked.

I thanked him profusely, because it really was a thoughtful gift... but asked him to please return it. Because if that cheap-skate employer (one of 3 I had at that time) wanted me to be on-call that often, he could bygawd provide the pager! Plus, it was quite nice to be *unavailable* at times. Sheesh.
