Trump Rules Out Further Debates, Declaring "I Won"

Ed Morrissey suggests this may be a negotiation tactic, because Trump was far too willing to concede anything to Biden, and then Kamala Harris, to get them on the stage. Maybe he would agree to a debate -- if it weren't "moderated" by Marxist Media shills.

But for now, he's saying, like Apollo Creed, "No rematch." (Of course Apollo changed his mind later.)

norematch.jpg

This kind of looks weak, but I think it's a good call anyway. Trump performed badly and I'm in no rush to see a rematch myself. Furthermore, the media agreed that they would not debate Trump, but merely moderate, but they lied, went back on their word and broke the debate rules to debate Trump anyway.

There are no honest brokers in the media who could "moderate" -- not even Fox, which always puts forth its most liberal anchors and "journalists" like scumbag Elderly Nepo Baby Chris Wallace. And then these "journalists" strain to show off for their liberal journalist pals and bed-mates by showing We Can Be Just As Biased Against Republicans As You Real Journalists Are, Just Watch Us!

And I've never hated Megyn Kelly, but let's face it, she and Chris Wallace worked it out so that she, a woman, would be the one to grill Trump about all the silly "grab them by the pussy" stuff at the Republican debate. And because all of this crap was completely unevidenced, she phrased it as being about how Trump talks about women (who attack him), but everyone knew she was winking and what she was really talking about were crazy claims about sexual assault.

And that's what you're going to get at Fox. Megyn Kelly was one of their best, and that's what Fox's best brought to the table.

And Trump claims his own polling shows him with a "modest bump" coming out of the debate. It's a surprise to me, but so far other pollsters aren't disputing him. It's not proven, but it's plausible.

A memo obtained from the Trump campaign Thursday reveals a modest post-debate polling bump for the former president, while Kamala Harris's support remains stagnant. In addition to the campaign's internal polling, multiple public polls, including new surveys by Rasmussen and the New York Times, show Trump moving ahead of Harris nationally and in critical swing states.

Key Details:

An internal Trump campaign survey of 1,893 likely voters in key target states showed a 2-point post-debate bump for Trump, while Harris's numbers remained unchanged.

The memo criticizes Harris's debate performance, noting that "target state voters were not impressed by Kamala Harris' empty platitudes."

Trump now leads Harris 50% to 47% in a head-to-head matchup. Other polls reflect similar trends, with a Rasmussen Reports survey conducted from September 5th-11th showing Trump ahead 49% to 47%, and a recent New York Times/Siena College poll showing Trump leading Harris 48% to 47%.

Duane Patterson thinks that the debate was a tie, and a tie benefits Trump, as he's not the one presiding over a nation on fire.

I watched every minute of the debate. The video package I had available for Wednesday morning's Hugh Hewitt Show and my Duane's World podcast included over 50 video clips. My original conclusion was that nobody won the debate. Trump wasn't at his best, Kamala Harris was an A.I. cyborg reciting memorized answers to issue sets, not specific questions. And David Muir and Linsey Davis, Kamala's sorority sister, set a standard for bias in a debate moderator that will never be equaled. I'm not sure it's physically possible to be more partisan and one-sided than what we saw Tuesday night in Philadelphia.

Donald Trump was effective at redirecting the conversation repeatedly throughout the debate on the border crisis, and all of the manifest problems we've seen over the last four years, whether it be on jobs, crime, drugs, national security concerns, education, or strains on the health care system. But there were at least a dozen opportunities for the former President to put this race away for good. He had multiple chances to do what Ronald Reagan did to Walter Mondale in 1984 - use a meme from his opponent he knew was coming and turn it around, erasing any doubt as to who is going to win the election. Trump didn't do that. I'll give you just two examples of a rhetorical checkmate Trump left on the board.

Kamala Harris launched into her 'Trump is the worst ever' routine at one point, making the case that the events of January 6th constituted the biggest threat to democracy since the Civil War. On 9/10, she said that. In real time, my eyes bugged out.

...

Another layup was when Harris claimed that there are no U.S. troops currently serving in a combat zone. We have troops at al-Assad in Iraq that constantly comes under attack. We just lost 7 servicemembers to an ISIS attack on August 31st. U.S. troops are stationed in a combat zone in Syria. There are hot spots all around the world where we have troops deployed. This was an easy way for Trump to show Harris as clueless, unmoored from reality, and recklessly stupid on the commander-in-chief question.

I don't know if that had any impact, either. I myself got bogged down in cut-and-parry stuff, but I'm sure the public is largely ignorant of the fact that American servicemen are still serving in war zones.

He also notes that Nate Silver still has Trump 61.3% likely to win the electoral college. Silver had had Trump at 63.8% likely, so this is a small loss of support.

But still likely to win.

42 Time will tell (well, probably, if somebody eventually talks), but if it's true that the Harris camp wanted another one, as I have read, then I don't think this is a negotiating tactic. The two sides have wildly different situations and requirements. Harris faces by far the biggest challenge (even though Trump continues to face, as opponents, virtually the entire "press", pop culture, much of business and other institutional America, etc). She's an unaccomplished unappealing and still mostly unknown nobody presiding, as ace notes, over a country on fire in many respects.

And tea leaves and comments here and there by certain people with access to better surveys leave little doubt that the situation for Dems remains as dire as it was when it moved them to do the astonishing thing and dump their nominee and sitting prez.

Will be greatly disappointing if this is a tactic and not a final position. Trump does more public events, more press engagement, more *hostile* press and institutional engagement, than any figure in modern history - he doesn't mind doing these stupid "debates". Harris is a weak, trailing opponent who still has no real campaign or policy profile.

56 From everything I'm reading, Trump has picked up significant momentum from the debate while Harris has faded into the woodwork. They need the debate. He doesn't. If he changes his mind, he can set the rules. But this also forces Harris to actually campaign which she is incapable of doing. The debate between Vance and Walz takes on all sorts of significance and you know Vanceis going to destroy him.

I dont think Kamala turned in a great debate performance, but Trump lost that debate going away imo. Just came off terrible. Every single Trump supporter I know was despondent after that debate.

I don't think she'd have much of a problem getting a reasonably large crowd to show up for her events, but the campaign cannot afford to risk the base RIFF-RAFF show up and carry out their antics.

So they have "approved" and "vetted" event attendees. They are literally producing a TV show or movie, with a set and actors and "extras."

He has stated numerous times, he will never have Trump on his show.

This is more than likely not due to animus but the simple fact if he were to have him on, there are numerous guests that will never do his show or come back on again.

So I can't see any scenario where he would host or moderate a debate.

Mostly agree. Trump's best line was in the closing when he asked why Harris didn't do all the great stuff she says she is planning to do over the last 3 1/2 years. If you go look at what Harris actually said during the debate she didn't say anything substantive, just I will make the economy great and give lots of tax breaks that will never pass and she will secure the border. Sure thing sugar tits. Nobody believes her.

There have been a number of polls since the debate and they show Trump's support on the key issues like the economy and immigration went up.

103 Kamala's team and the media (but I repeat myself) were saying Trump was scared to have open mics, and when Trump said "no open mics or no debate" they were saying he's scared to debate her.

No matter what, "Trump is scared" is going to be the song, so let them sing it. While they do, Trump will continue hitting the message of the economy and immigration. That's what'll win him the votes.

110 Another debate point:

Harris seemed to be talking to the Left. (J6, abortion, liar, ...) which makes sense since they are the ones who run the cheat machine.

Trump was talking to LIVs and moderates. He seemed intent on bringing up a lot of points that the Left will dismiss or "factcheck" but which the middle ground people are not hearing discussed ("he hates her", eating dogs, "I sent it back to the states which is what everyone wanted,....")

An Aside - I almost punched a lawyer in the face -- in a courtroom -- when he called me a liar. Harris threw that word around a lot, but I think to many people that is an evil slur and you had better back it up. These are the working class people and the ones that Trump is winning.

Those examples you cited prove the one thing (and only thing) debates do: They solidify the unspoken truths that people were already believing but hadn't yet vocalized.

"Biden is half dead" was the murmur. The debate gave a voice to that.

"Kamala is a weak candidate with too many positions she's flip-flopped on" was the murmur. Tulsi said it out loud and gave people permission to ditto it.

"You're no Jack Kennedy" verified what a lot of people too polite to say: Quale was a lightweight wannabe.

we didn't get one of those moments in the last debate...at least not one that has been talked about. Early on, at one point, Trump replied to one of Kamala's memorized rants with "She doesn't even know what she's talking about; she's just repeating what they told her to say"

It was in the middle of cross-talk and no one really caught it, but it could have been one of those kill shots.

136 ShainS, I believe Trump campaign has some ads already that follow that excellent approach - split screen, the bimbo arguing with herself, or flip-flopping on a specific issue, at different times. Devastating, far worse than the very real and effective stuff done (legitimatedly) against Kerry.

Caesar, that's my whole premise here - she's still unknown, by prez campaign standards. Next to vile Joe in 2020, who was at that time unable to deal with normal press interaction (if some could be found any more), hid, and "won". Well, not likely, but.

She can't do that. She's not known or liked or anything that is basic for a campaign. She desperately needs massive exposure and instead is hidden away. Amazing, really. Meanwhile, Trump will do more events and engagements (including "press", where, as has always been the case, there are no limits or guidelines for the dumb, hostile cretins who now make up 95% of the "press") than the last 3 GOP candidates put together.

149 The only way that could happen is if there were no moderator at all. So they could state their positions, and the other could respond. I guess you would have to have a time keeper, but the candidates themselves should get to ask each other the questions of their choosing.
Posted by: Dash my lace wigs! at September 12, 2024 05:14 PM (OX9vb)

*****

It would be trivially easy to set up an automated system to “moderate” the debate: prerecorded questions, allotted amount of time for each response, mics automatically muted, no “fact checking”, each candidate gets a “free period” to make a statement, and maybe a couple of “rebuttal tokens” to be used at their discretion to offer a direct response to something said.

The problem is, it would be boring. A big draw of these debates—for all parties—is the drama, the interruptions, the “clapbacks”, and the moderators arguing with the Republican.

150 The only ones who ever want "another debate" are the ones who NEED another debate. They're so risky because one big gaffe can end you, but if you're down and need a hail mary, that's what you go for.

Fact is, if Trump thought he was losing ground and was worried she was surging, he would agree to another debate, becuase his people would be telling him "do another one and let's get a knockout blow." Instead, they're saying "no, we're good." They don't need it, and for a republican to say that, means they must have some very encouraging data they're seeing.

Tells you all you need to know about the state of the race.

It's the economy, ho.

And, the indications are, those that are persuadable, the undecided, they did go in with an open mind--and expected a lot more from ... Harris.

So, the answers we wanted from Trump? Those may have gotten cheers from us but may have cost him bigly among the voters he's needing.

Remember: In 2020, Joe was at an average of 50.5 while Trump was at 43. Biden pulled away through the middle of Oct., then Trump started closing the gap.

Funny, how nobody's talking about how with BIDEN, they DIDN'T break the debate rules, and it was a TKO. Also, whatever drugs they had given him before for such occasions were ineffective. The puppet masters set him up for that fall.

If you want to call that debate a "win" for Kamala, it's by virtue of the fact that she - for the most part - managed to NOT babble meaningless platitudes, as she often does. I recent saw a clip of her when she was CA's AG - she was NOT like that back then. People suggest she might be an alcoholic, which might explain the deterioration. There's a halfway decent theory that she had an earpiece, and was being fed answers. Obviously, her team had been given the questions in advance (but they were kind of obvious anyway).

173 One way in which debates (rarely) have mattered: 1980, when Reagan's caricatured image (the press was 80% better then, but still wildly, wildly partisan and distorted) came up against live TV in his first debate with Jimmy.

Boom. Turned out Reagan wasn't scary, or dumb, or otherwise off-putting. Carter was doomed, but that was a real turning point in the whole process that helped a victory become a massive landslide.

Harris is in a comparable situation. She doesn't need to dispel an artificial negative image (though she would have to, if her dingbat nature and performance were ever given any exposure by the "press"). But she desperately needs to define herself for voters who are open to it. She's a blank slate who doesn't have the circumstances, the opponent, or the appeal to vapid idiots like Obama did. She needs something. And she ain't got it now, I doubt she will ever have it. But more 1 on 1s with Trump would seem definitely far more important to her, than to him.

And which I hadn't seen, since leaving, a very long time ago.

It was depressing. Terrible. Most all the older homes built in the 1920s all gone and lots vacant, and it seemed like every kind of business that produced anything had disappeared with only weedy acres left behind.

The parish church where I sang in the choir, did first communion and confirmation still stands, but not its convent or its 1 thru 8 school.

Today it looks like ripe territory for a Haitian infusion.

179 re Kamala in NC

think about otherwise GOP states that have elected blue governors or senators. Kentucky and Ohio come to mind. Why does that happen? It happens because the left mobilizes around a big leftist idea, then gets their people to the polls when the other party is napping.

I think it was telling that Kamala's people, post-debate, said they hammered abortion the way they did, because that's the most resonant message for women voters (sadly).

If they can make that the decisive issue, over something like the economy, then they hope to flip a state like North Carolina.

Her overall strategy, I think, is to hold Nevada, keep (wink wink) Arizona, and flip either NC or Georgia, as a way to withstand Trump taking Pennsylvania.

Remember how long they took to announce PA in 2016? He was ahead by something like 2%, with 1% of the vote left to count, and they still wouldn't do it, for a pretty long time. Crooks, every one of them.

But it wasn't about "overwhelming the fraud". The fix was in - Hillary was measuring for drapes - but as Gen McInerny explained, the steal (via Hammer and Scorecard) was "stopped". He didn't say how. Clearly it was not STOPPED in 2020, and that was likely for a purpose.

I mean, Trump strength is his ability to connect to normal people. I am not sure if that is his positions, his instinctive reactions to things, or his speech patterns.

His weakness with people like us - informed, intelligent?, and conservative -- is that he does not elucidate the facts or the justification for his positions the way Reagan was so skilled at.

I don't know if this is a bitter with the sweet type of deal where you can't have both, but I think there is no debate format that is inherently positive for Trump. He is not a debater but he is skilled at hijacking narratives and this debate was an opportunity for him to do that.

I remember in 2016, early in the night, when Trump was leading (for a long time) in Virginia. Old James Carville was on CNN, just shaking his head, listening as the panelists were saying Hillary was hoping to win North Carolina.

Carville jumped in: "If he's losing in Virginia, she's already lost North Carolina!"

Trump ended up losing Virginia and winning North Carolina.

Winning VA back would be a delight. It'd be called earlier than Pennsylvania, and would be an early nail in the coffin for her.

93% of the coverage of Trump is negative.
And not clips of what Trump said with the cast then all reacting in horror at how awful what he said was.

But, the host says what they claim Trump said--strictly avoiding any audio or video of Trump, especially not in context--and that is what they attack--their characterization of what he said.

So, seeing the actual Trump. Even the muted, restrained Trump, the Trump that we all though failed?

Now the press is on him about Laura Loomer, "far-right provocateur" who promoted the "false rumor about Haitians eating pets," showing up a little outside of a small circle of people he met with outside Engine Company 4 Ladder Company 15 in New York City yesterday.

Harris is in NC crowing, “I believe we owe to the voters to have another debate, because this election and what is at stake could not be more important.” Also, Bush’s attorney general endorses Harris and denounces Trump’s role in January 6, joining "other high-profile Republicans voting for Democrat."

So now those A-homes have Bush’s attorney general endorsing Harris, calling Trump ‘most serious threat to law.’

318 I said before the debase that the mutilators were going to let Kamala lie. And they did.

I didn't know they were going to live "fact-check" Trump on things they thought there were other sides to.

"Hey the mayor who has a principle stake being elected every 4 years to make his town seem like he's running it properly says that bad things are not happening!"

Well, it's a fact that he said it. But him saying it doesn't make it much a fact with which to fact-check.

Also, at no point did I hear Trump claim that it is legal to terminate a pregnancy in some states, so the "fact-check" was kind of a strawman. There are states that won't prosecute doctors for making those kind of decisions--and that's the point.

And there's that VP candidate governor who vetoed a Born Alive rights act.

357 I think that the results of the Trump - Harris debate were a bit like the Nixon - JFK debate: people that listened on the radio thought Nixon won, but people that watch it on television thought Kennedy won.

Harris's body language was terrible: smirking, inappropriate laughing, and generally coming across as an insufferable b!tch. Trump got her to back Israel, and deny going after guns: those are NOT the positions of the Democrat base.

His "Haitian migrants are eating dogs and cats" got people to investigate what's really going on in Springfield, OH. I saw a Youtube recording where a citizen journalist went to Springfield: it's bad, the local citizens are being displaced, and the Haitians are monopolizing all of the social services.

The Haitians drive like $h!t and have caused at least two fatal crashes. When this guy went to the DMV to ask how Haitians are getting driver's license, the DMV drone replied, "I'm not allowed to tell you." Nothing sketchy about that.

Oh, the citizen journalist asked about Haitians eating cats, too. A resident stated that he was a Haitian in a white van loading up cats.

This story has legs.

362 Valid point... but in his own self interest? He helps Harris over the ten foot tall barrier of Pennsylvania while she barely breaks the five foot tall mark?

Which knocks him out of '28 contention, and probably forever?

If he doesn't purge the Dem party, zero chance a white male Jew will get anywhere near a nomination. Now, if the party crashes and burns, who knows?

363 "the left mobilizes around a big leftist idea, then gets their people to the polls when the other party is napping."

Kind of like 2000 when the press called Florida for Gore despite the panhandle being an hour earlier and still voting. The rube Goppers said, "well, if the press called it for Gore, I guess I'll believe it and go home." If they had had the fortitude to say "FU, we ain't done", that disaster would not have happened.

367 344 Harris did not have to appear stupid. With the help of ABC, a ton of lies, and the moderators, she succeeded.
It did not move the needle in her favor.

Posted by: Diogenes at September 12, 2024 05:59 PM (W/lyH)

Harris needs the assistance of a man in order to get anywhere in her career. She doesn't have what it takes to do an interview or debate without a man protecting her.

368 Yeah I don’t know. I never understood the whole likely voter vs registered voters thing. Is one more accurate? I mean demonstrably. That’s a honest question.
Posted by: Truthbomb at September 12, 2024 06:04 PM (QYCIF)

I'm a poll skeptic, but it is absolutely so that if it isn't likely voters it is 100 percent worthless. If it is likely it might have some value. Not a lot, but some.

According to the DOJ’s National Crime Victimization Survey, violent crime was up 37% last year (latest data) over 2020 levels…

******

We know crime is up.
We know the media lie.
We know Trump was telling the truth.

And it doesn’t matter. The LIVs saw Trump fact-checked by the FBI’s b.s. statistics. If they’ll take anything away, that will be it.

This wasn’t a campaign rally; preaching to those who know crime is up and who are already voting for Trump. A debate is for the idiots who have no clue what’s going, but only a vague sense things are not right. They don’t know who to blame for their misgivings. The goal for Trump was to get people to blame Kamala, and I think he largely failed at that.

Posted by: Lurker at September 12, 2024 06:08 PM (FC8SQ)

370 351 A lot of the internal polls show Trump down in NC and Georgia. Let that sink in. It’s why Kamala is there. They feel it’s winnable.
___

If Trump can win PA, AZ, and NV, he can lose NC or GA. If he loses both, he'll also need to win MI. (WI won't be enough.)

Elections Betting Odds website (run by Maxim Lott and John Stossel) showed a tiny bump for Harris. It has been roughly 49% to 49% for a good while. After the 3 on 1 debate, Harris is now at 52% and Trump at 47%. That 5% gap is nearly insignificant in the betting markets.
More importantly, the Democrat should be at a stratospheric 75% favorite at this point in the race.
There's a long way to go, but it's very hard to imagine Harris suddenly enjoying a breakthrough in the betting markets.

Based on highly accurate historical trajectories, Trump is effectively in the driver's seat.
Then again, it's always unwise to bet when the game is rigged.

Meanwhile... we're on the cusp of WWIII.
Two days ago Putin publicly declared that if Washington D.C. gives the go ahead for long-range missile strikes out of Ukraine into Russia: the Kremlin will retaliate against US targets.
Putin gave the statement live in front of cameras and gave unusual amount of detail to his statement. He said the US will have made itself "at war" with Russia.

373 The most important ballots in the upcoming election will be the fraudulent ones. If the Republican machinery is not bringing their own brand of muscled-thug-with-a-lawyer to every single polling station in the battleground states, then they're not really wanting to win this thing.

No, that isn't so. Everyone knows Kamala had no influence in the administration and shirked the one job she was given. That's 2 strikes right there.

He just had to show she didn't have a new, different answer to anything. She stole some planks from him, if so why not just get Trump? She lied about some others that everyone knows will get dropped after election.

he said the 'at war' line months ago and we have already violated that by allowing / ordering the Kursk invasion.

I don't think Putin will start launching at once, but all these violations are being noted and will not be forgotten.

The reaction of the Donks to the "Trump saves kittens and ducks" memes says it all. It has left a mark.

Springfield, OH is a gritty town that has punched above its weight in violent crime for a long time. The Haitians have turned it into Hell-on-Earth. I saw a video in which a black guy accused the City Council of getting paid under-the-table; he said "Somebody's getting money from this" because the situation doesn't make any sense otherwise.

I honestly do not remember Putin saying if some such specific "X" transpires then the US will have entered a kinetic war with Russia. I can recall all kinds dire but generalized warnings about the folly of potential escalation and that that is where the West seems to be pushing. But Putin's recent statement is categorically different than those other warnings.

But maybe, you're right, Oldcat. I certainly haven't followed every statement Putin has made.

380 Go read Andrew Gelman's article about the 2012 polls, called the "Mythical Swing Voter." It examines polling in the 2012 election. Romney's improvement in the polls after the first debate (that he "won") was almost entirely the result of changes in polling samples, not changes in vote intention. I suspect you would see a similar response bias now, since the Democrats have been told that Harris "won" the debate.

Oldcat, I got my info from Daniel Davis / Deep Dive "BREAKING NEWS: Putin's Red Line May Be Crossed."

Maybe take a look.

382 Trump should call her bluff and say he gave them 2, so he wants one. And he'll even give Kamala a boost by making both moderators be African American (well unlike her seeing she's minimally African and none were from America) then make Tyrus and Lawrence Jones be the moderators.

Besides the moderators, which may have put Trump on tilt, he needs to just not fall for shit. He didn't versus Biden but then got a goaded by Harris. His parole need to just hammer home that his base is locked in, and he needs to appeal to moderates, and the best way of doing that is just showing how you'll fix her mistakes. I know it's tough when she's doing nothing but lying, but that's all she can do.

383 Winning VA back would be a delight. It'd be called earlier than Pennsylvania, and would be an early nail in the coffin for her.

Shades of 2016, where MI and WI were unexpectedly turned.

Of course, that assumes that the military doesn't launch a major cyberattack against the election fraud infrastructure (Dominion, China, etc) and we actually get a legitimate count, and therefore a landslide in all kinds of states we were gaslighted into thinking were "blue". You don't really think they couldn't have stopped it last time, did you?

387 Somebody was posting multiple times here on debate night that there would be no more debates unless Kamala fell far behind in the polls. Of course I was written off as a concern troll. But it was true and is still true. Yes, Trump is the one who is "backing out", but Kamala was never going to debate again. She would just continue to insist on ever greater concessions (wired with earpiece, Rachel Maddow moderates on MSNBC, etc) until Trump refused and then they could blame him for backing out. She's not debating again. UNLESS she falls far behind. And then, Trump calls the shots. Debate on Fox, no other gimmicks. I don't think that happens either, but that's why I pointed out there will not be another debate.

390 Rightful President Trump won the debate when Obama and Biden were too chickenshit to show up and shoot him in the head again.

It's far beyond "issues" now.

This is the Uniparty Gestapo versus the People. Life versus Death. Good versus Evil.

And we know Who wins those fights.
